I posted this in the big 3.0.4 thread, but thought this might merit its own thread w/o hijacking that one....
I upgraded to 3.0.4 last night and my Touchstone suddenly stopped charging. I know it was the update because I had it resting on it the entire time. On 3.0.2 it was a-ok, but once it finally rebooted into 3.0.4... nothing. I have the HP OEM case. This morning I finally took it out of the case, and sure enough, the Touchstone works.
There are a few threads on other sites of people having the same issue. It sounds like the update decreased the sensitivity of the induction doo-dad (technical term) to increase the accuracy of the compass (apparently the TP has one...), and in the process borked the Touchstone charging for just about any case, although some people report the Touchstone still charges with the HP case.
Does anyone know of a workaround? Or is a patch possible outside of another HP update? I really don't care about the compass. It sounds like some of the other people affected are awaiting responses from HP, but who knows if they'll fix it.
ps. On a side note, does the Touchstone still work in CM7?
Just put mine onto the Touchstone, and it is charging it with the case on (I have the HP case).
Mine charges in the HP case as well but not if the case is folded over. I used to be able to charge it with the case cover folded behind. This is really stupid b/c who is really using the compass feature, hardly anyone (including myself) knew it was there.

I have the touchstone and the HP case, I find that it's more finicky about where it is on the Touchstone to charge, just slide it to the left a bit in landscape and you'll hear the charging tone. The charging grid is towards the Center button, not in the middle of the unit. Shame that the case doesn't fold back as nicely on the stand in portrait mode (but it charges just the same).
And fwiw, I have my HP BT keyboard booklet, the microfiber wipe, behind the tp inside the case.

Lucky! It sounds like it's just really finicky now with the supposed lower sensitivity. I've tried moving TP around on the Touchstone and smashing the case down more when I fold it, etc, and didn't have any luck as long as the case was still on. The "reach" of the inductive charger must be right at the limit now and, of course, I'm sure depends on a lot of other factors.
You could try running WebOS Doctor and doing a clean install:

Did you have any preware patches installed before running the update?

Ok, thanks. I've never used Doctor before, but I may have to try that. I'm still hoping there's some update or patch to revert this behavior.
I did have the typical preware patches installed before this (for the logging, etc). I reverted back to the stock kernel before the update. I haven't tried messing with Preware again after the update.
I did the update and it failed. So I webosdoctor'd it...now it won't even charge sitting on the Touchstone naked! LOL
I played around with it a little more last night. It will charge if I put my TP on the TS in the cover but w/o folding the flap behind it (rather, just letting it lay out in front). It used to work with it folded behind too. This sucks, but I guess it's something for now.
I am having the same issue Touchstone no longer works on my touchpad after update.
Also of note I had the touchpad ON the touchstone while making the update.

Same here. I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Do you have any case on the TP?
Would it be possible to tweak the touchstone induction back to 3.0.2 levels via a patch in preware? I was hoping one of the unofficial kernels might be able to.
My touchstone seems to work. For both webOS and for CM7.
My TouchPad charges fine after the latest update even with a Poetic Folio case that is much thinker than the official HP case.

I am getting my 2 32Gb touchpads today. I bought them from officedepot.com the night (yes they were only available, or in stock, for one night) they went on sale. That was back on August 20th. They went on backorder and now they are just hours from arriving.
I have two concerns. I have read on precentral's forums that people have been having cracks near the speakers. I do hope that mine don't ever develop this. Also, there have been stories about faulty batteries that don't even last a few hours before needing a charge.
What can you guys tell me about these issues? I am worried that I'll have to call HP and complain, but I hear that HP is very generous with there support options for this tablet. (Maybe they knew that this tablet had faults all along?)
1) chill out
2) wait for when you actually get the touchpads
3a) if they have problems, contact hp support
3b) if they don't, enjoy touchpads
I have not heard any significant complaints about either of these issues.
By "cracks" I believe people were referring to the crackling sound you get if you override the volume limiter (I recommend you override the volume limiter, by the way, but do not turn the speakers up all the way).
Also, any battery could have manufacturing issues. Batteries are such mature technologies, I would say your chances of getting a defective one are the same as you would have buying any consumer electronics with built in batteries. My experience was that I was shocked at how long my battery lasted. I used Pandora all night long, on wifi, not plugged into the wall, and my battery still got me through the day the next day.
WebOS, however, is a steaming pile.
Here's an update. I opened one of my touchpads today and I'm amazed at these things. I have no cracks so far in the casing and the battery seems normal. I am used to the gtablet where it would stay at 100 % for a while then die off; the touchpad's battery meter slowly ticks down 100, 95, 92.. etc..
And by cracks I mean actual cracks in the side near the speakers. There are LOT's of posts about this on the precentral forums. I won't link to them but you can find them if you want to.
My only real complaint is that there is a problem with the camera apps. I installed two of them, freecam being one, and I get errors after I launch them. I think they can't find the camera or something.

If the app cannot find the camera, then yes, you might actually have a hardware problem.
Edit: Just install FreeCam and it works fine for me D:

The TouchPad, by nature is simply not one of those run-of-the-mill type tablets. People will try to take it from you. People are fascinated by the simple fact that it's a tablet that's not an iPad. Like even if you have say an iPad guy and a TouchPad guy in one room, people have always been attracted to the TouchPad, that's how it's always been...
Lmao.. this is so true. I can't take it out in public or around family without being asked 20 questions. It's a shame HP stopped making them, but then again I may not have bought a $499 touchpad.
Be Extra Careful With Peripherals
Someone once wrapped tin foil around their TouchPad then put it on the Touchstone charger...it exploded. Yeah, don't do that.
Make sure you never lose your charging plug. The HP TouchPad charges at a certain voltage and will not charge from computer. You don't want to lose it.
I've heard stories of people losing their chargers and going out to buy inductive charging units, (other than touchstone) like a powermat.
I wonder if that works?
^ I don't have a Touchstone
it'll charge from a pc when off for sure. Takes considerably longer though.
Heads up, if you take a screenshot with webOS, you need to go to CM7 to find it.
I have to say, I always have my laptop, TouchPad and cell at my desk, but when I get a notification, I put the other two down and check out on the TouchPad. Its much faster and more intuitive.

You're telling the truth. The TouchPad is the go-to device for email. The experience is so nice..! I'll sit right in front of my laptop and use it, I check my email exclusively on my TouchPad.
lol same here.
If you're in a full screen card, you can close a card using the full page flip method.
Swipe from just below the screen (like you normally would to close a card) then quickly swipe in a downwards motion from the center of the screen to catapult the card off the top of the screen.
Most common question I get is, "Is that an iPad?".
Have you read the headlines? It's about how cheap tabs are the new thing. That's strange..
I don't think cheap tabs are where it's at...

I have also gotten that question a fair amount :-( My standard response these days is simply this. "No, anybody can have an iPad, I have something much more rare and useful and exclusive...a Touchpad. Don't bother looking, YOU can't get one".
That ends the stupid questions I find. ;-)
Watch out for HP TouchPad hoarding. lol
I went into town again today- it happend yet again! I love it!!!!
Just added this thread, 'cause I think there aren't enough positive threads.
Got my dock two days ago.
I plugged in my tablet and charger and loaded both of them for a couple of hours.
When they were fully charged, I disconnected the charger and began surfing and watching movies.
The battery of my tablet stayed at 100%, while my dock battery depleted. So I will always have a fully loaded tablet if I decide to disconnect the tablet from my dock. Unless I keep using my TF101 for 16 hours straight without charging (which will someday happen, I betcha! Can't stop using it!!!
I also noticed that when I use the arrow pointer the scrolling direction of the touchpad is inverted. This is IMO very well thought out, because it is the same on a laptop.
I read on different fora that people have problems with their dock and that the dock only kicks in when the tablet battery is at 70%.
Is my dock working differently, because I am running Revolver ROM?
Just a couple of glitches:
When you use the arrow pointer, you can't use pinch-to-zoom anymore.
Sometimes I have a lag while typing, but it doesn't bother me or slow me down. Even in this forum I have minimal lag.
Sometimes the touchpad is not as responsive as I want it to be.
Mouseover isn't working in browser.
Anywayz, apart from a couple of little issues (hopefully solved in ICS), my dock is working perfectly!!

I´ve been having my Transformer (+dock) for 10 days now. Before that, I had an Netbook running Windows with an extended battery.
With that I usually had to put it to the charger 3 times a week.
Now, with the Transformer I still had 40% (!!) battery left after one week of normal use.

I think this only applies to the Transformer Prime of which I have had 3.
I am not convinced it is a wise idea to keep the keyboard dock constantly charging the tablet though.
I will be using the tablet without the dock also.
I also charge all my devices when they reach 50%.
only one "problem" with dock I have - the software keayboard i'm using instead of stock one doesn't support ctrl+space locale switch 8) and i cannot find any better combination for it
surely thats not a dock issue, but a software i'm using and I still hope that its author will implement that feature 8)

I do the same. I was at my local Library yesterday with dock and mouse. Some guy with a Playbook (or similar) kept looking over at me the whole time he was there. I'm pretty sure he knew what I was using and seemed pretty keen on having a look.
I have no issues with mine either. Except that right click works like esc which drives me bonkers on remote desktop. But that's not a dock issue, its an android issue.

This is just weird. I broke my oem charger by spilling diet coke on in last night. I was going to order one but needed to charge it right away to access some documents on my tp. So i was thinking what else can I charge it with. I knew that it had a built in reciever for inductive charging and I started thinking of any devices I might have that have this. Well as it happens I had back surgery last year and had a spine stimulator with an inductive battery installed in my back to be able to live with my spine injuries and the pain. So I grabbed the charger off the cradle, turned it on and moved it around the back of the tp. booyah, the charging icon flashed on the screen. So now I have another use for my $100000 spine bionics. At least the $2000 inductive charger that comes with it. It charges faster that the stock charger. lmao. The brand is Boston Scientific.
Instead of clouding up this forum with another plee for stable roms I will just tack on my request here. Has there been any recent JB updates? All the ones I have tried have major side effects. I like the SGA's slim rom the best but I can't find an update for the dec 12th release. I looked on slimrom.net and it doesn't even list tp as a supported device. I dd notice that it does support my sgs3 though, so That may be my first try at flashing my new s3. I do want to keep my beloved tp alive though. The JB roms are all so laggy for me. Any input would be greatly appreciated. I have never done a clean install ging back with webos doctor and removing android. I have about 100 flashes on it so far. Should I go for that and see how these jb roms run then?
Thanks:laugh:

Hey guys,
I went out on a limb and bought the OWL car charger+dock for my DNA.
There is a bunch of discussion on the item here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029734 along with plenty of pictures.
I wanted to let you guys know some specifics for the DNA:
1. The phone fits perfectly into the clip. I don't have any cases, so I can't test that, but naked the phone fits like a glove and is very secure, even upside down.
2. Even the "second generation" of charger still does not put out enough juice for the DNA, even with the phone at idle.
I have emailed Moon and will update this thread when I hear back from him. I am thinking the problem might have something to do with the controller inside the charger. It switches to red (charging) momentarily when the phone is inserted, but then switches back to green (full).

Update 1: Moon has emailed back already to assure me that if the charger doesn't work, he will do what it takes to make it right.
I am hoping we can figure out a way to make the phone work in the charger, since I love the design and the convenience of Qi...
awesome! I have been wondering if it works for our phone since I saw the post you linked above about a week ago. I emailed moon about it, but he was unsure. I'm glad that someone confirmed what I have been wondering. Thanks again
I'm also looking forward to more info on this. Going through the website I couldn't quite follow if it worked or not.
Update 2:
The Qi charging coil built into the CarPad does work to charge the HTC DNA, unfortunately the coil is positioned about 0.5" too low for the phone.
Moon is working on an adjustment to the circuit board to re-position the charging coil.
Tonight I am going to take a look at temperatures during charging. With the screen turned on the battery did get 3-4°C warmer than normal on the Nokia Qi charger, but it was a pretty short charge. I am going to try leaving the screen turned on and the phone charging on the CarPad tonight for a couple of hours to see the charge rate and temperature change.
Other news:
There does not seem to be any scuffing, scratching, or denting of the phone's finish caused by inserting and removing from the clip. I had worried that the spring arms on the side might hurt the matte finish on the back of the phone, but so far I don't see any changes.
Thanks guys,
Ben
thanks for the update, keep us posted. in car qi charging is very interesting.

Thanks, I got a reply from Moon that he thinks the "autopad" will be the option for the DNA and he'll let me know when it is available. I will post info here if I hear back.
http://owlpad.net/owl-autopad/
Update 3:
Good news tonight. First, I've done a temperature test using the phone at room temperature. With navigation, LTE, and the screen constantly on the CarPad provides moderage charge (+200mAh) and does not cause excessively high heat (under 45°C). This is comparable with the 43°C I saw with the Nokia Qi charger while watching a Netflix Stream.
With the screen off the temperature is also pretty normal (35°C) so I think the coil is good.
Moon at Owl Chargers tells me that he may add a little to the coil to make it more consistent on the charging, and he is going to create a new PCB that has the coil positioned 1/2" higher so that it will line up properly with the DNA.
It sounds like this change could happen pretty quickly, but I will let you know when I have the test board in hand.
Thanks guys,
Ben
Please keep the updates coming, thanks!
Hey everyone, sorry for a few days of delay.
I talked to Moon this morning and he thinks they should have the test board created by the beginning of next week. He is moving the charging coil up to line up better with both the DNA and the Galaxy S3, and he is upgrading to a bigger charging coil to presumably give better charging efficiency.
I have removed the standard charging coil from the phone holding base and have been using it as a standard desktop charger for the last few days (with the Owl-Pad supplied AC Adapter). It has been working well for that as long as I position the phone properly, so with any luck the new board should fix the problem in the car mount.
I will let you guys know when the new part ships, and will be sure to take pictures of the new versus old board.
Thanks,
Ben
Thanks for the updates.
Sudo make me a sandwich.
Good news from Moon at OWL Pad today, the new circuit board is complete, his testing looks good, and he is shipping it out to me to test on the DNA tomorrow.
I will update everyone here with pictures once I have the new board and have been able to try it out, but Moon posted some initial tests on the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 which both charge at the higher position. Those tests looked good so I have to think it will work on the DNA as well.
Thanks all,
Ben

I'm not sure how he would do that. I'm sure he has a bunch of the units already boxed up from the last production run. It might be that he has to ship the old unit and the new board separate. Honestly, changing the board was incredibly easy. There are four screws and then the old board just lifts out and the new one drops in.
When the new one comes in I had planned on putting up pictures showing how to remove the old one and install the new one.

Looks like the set is for sale for the DNA on the web page now. Still sounds like he's waiting for test results but you go through with an order now if you want.
Hey Guys,
I got the unit in the mail when I got home from work (30 minutes ago).
So far everything looks GREAT!
I am running temperature and charging tests now, but the new coil position looks perfect, and I'm getting as much or possibly more current out of the OWL charger than I was getting out of the Nokia.
Tonight I should have pictures and screen shots available from my early tests, but I have to say that everything looks great so far.
I also want to add that the level of customer service and responsiveness from Moon at OWL charging was incredible. If I got service half as good from the companies I do business with in the US I would be amazed, and these folks are having to deal with me from the other side of the world. I have absolutely no ties with their company, and hadn't even spoken to them to ask if the charger worked for my phone before I ordered, but they went above and beyond any expectations in getting this charger working.
Once I have a few hours charging I can fill in the remaining details (temperatures, approximate charge time, etc), but right now I would say the newest version is a huge success!
