Alright, was thinking of getting the Flyer but I don't know if I would want it without an AOSP build on it. I mean it's cool, but it seems that this tablet would look beautiful with ICS or just vanilla android in general. I like sense but not enough to have a tablet with it.
So, are the devs planning any work on ICS or is it a dead cause?
I can't speak for every developer, but I don't think you will get a lot of takers to put in the vast amount of time an effort to build yet another vanilla tablet ROM when the Sense widgets and Stylus APIs add quite a bit to the Flyer and for some Sense widgets, there are no equal replacement widgets on the market. why bother, if someone doesn't want to use the Sense widgets and launcher, just don't use them, they hurt nothing in the background. And you cannot build a true working AOSP ROM anyway because you are always dependent on the hardware vendors drivers and kernel.
Just run the Flyer with ADW EX launcher or Launcher Pro if you like it better. Works fine that way.
Ill just say that I am NOT a fan of sense in general. I would never want it on a phone and run cyanogen on my evo 4g. BUT it actually works really well on the flyer. I wasn't a big fan of the sense launcher, so I'm running adw, but all of the other sense apps really add functionality to the tablet.
I'm a Rom whore on phones, but I'm still running the stock software (2.3.4) on my flyer because of works so well.
Just get a flyer and enjoy what's in my opinion the best tab available by far.

Although we do not have the strongest developer base ever. We still do have developers that do work hard for us. I'm not saying that we're going to have developers that will build ICS for us, but what I can say that it would not be a stretch to port ICS from DHD, G2/DZ, MT4G. I can say this because I have seen the GB flyer port to my G2 and it should not be hard to do it the other way around. So really we just need to wait until one of those phones gets ICS or if Cyanogen decides to build for us. We'll get it eventually it will just be a matter of when. The whole I like sense vs. I don't like sense argument does not apply here, because this is android and we will have a choice between the two. We'll most likely also get an HTC sense build of ICS from HTC, but that may take a little time.
while i am enjoying my flyer with homeycomb/sense i have to agree. as much as i love htc devices,i really hate htc sense. id very much like some sort of AOSP rom as well- it really surprised me to not see any cm7 ports,or even official cm support.
i personally dont use any sense widgets or apps. simply running a different launcher doesnt get rid of sense. you still have sense contacts, keyboard, email, etc. sure you can get 3rd party apps for all those things, but that makes the appready huge footprint of the sense rom even bigger.
AOSP seems smoother and faster on my other htc devices, and id prefer it on my flyer as well. id like to learn how to port roms to different devices,so i could have cm7,8,or 9
I would love to see ICS make its way onto the Flyer. But with how long it's taken HTC to give us a HC update, I'm relying more on Cyanogen than anything else.
Being a guy who is seriously considering this sexy tablet myself.
I have been wondering if there would be an ICS port although an official seems unlikely.
I don't "need" a tablet, but a device to read manga on and watch videos every so often would be nice.
This is the smoothest tablet I've ever seen (I like it more than any other tablet I've seen.. including ipad 2, galaxy tab ect ect)
Decided to get nook tablet instead.

We're not talking about an OG phone here with limited memory. The Flyer has gob of memory. Sense runs great on the flyer. While It might make you "feel" better to think you are running an AoSP ROM, there's nothing that makes it perform better. I would never give up the Pen or email and other widgets that sense has that no one else has for a good feeling. It doesn't make Sense.
ICS seems to be a close relative of Honeycomb.
I am hoping that the delay in releasing HC for Flyer officially is that HC is being cancelled and work is instead shifiting to ICS.
From what I see of ICS, I would take it over HC with Sense.
My guess is that no one is working on an ICS Mod for us.
hm.. gotta agree... there is no point in getting a rom if you actually are losing functionality... kinda the opposite direction of what most people hope for.
Especially sine 2.3.4 is a pretty decent version.

to each his own... i dont use the pen. i dont use any sense widgets. i like the way AOSP looks and feels, and the way the menus and native apps look. i dont like sense, and even if performance is exactly the same, *I* would enjoy *MY* flyer alot more if i had AOSP roms for it.
just my personal opinion... some folks like sense and sense widgets, and theres nothing wrong with that. but theres nothing wrong with prefering the look and feel of AOSP,either.

I think you mean you've bought the wrong tablet.
You have to know HTC == Sense. Just don't buy HTC if you complain about Sense.
With all the ICS Alpha ports popping up these days, even on the HTC HD and such, I would not be surprised to see a repackage bootable of ICS for the Flyer soon. These came around for the Old color Nook in Honeycomb flavor, but never fully worked. The problem is they stay about about 70% working until HTC releases the ICS kernel and drivers. Nice to see how they look but things like camera, Bluetooth, video playback and phone don't work. Who knows? Maybe one of the tapped in developers can even patch together a working kernel from the current HTC source code. Since Google released the main OS source, things could get wild.
digital, you are correct, sdk ports rarely amount to anything useable and worthwhile. source code is needed to really get all the functionality.

i know htc very well. i dont ever buy a device for the software it runs, since everything i own gets rooted and ROMed. i buy htc because i like the hardware, and i like the way they "work". i bought the flyer because i like messing with htc products.
lots of folks dont understand my fondness for htc,but my dislike of sense. as i stated,im enjoying my flyer very much with sensified HC. i dont mind sense in small doses , and and if AOSP roms were available,id prolly flip flop back and forth between them. not complaining,im not wishing i hadnt bought it. all i did was agree with the OP in that i also have a strong preference for AOSP.
again, nothing wrong with liking sense. nothing wrong with not liking it either.
Sense 4.0 for Android ICS in the works for 2012.
All quads from the HTC are going to feature Beats Audio. They are also to have HTC Sense 4.0

I enjoy reading manga on mine. The screen is very nice.
To each his own, but when you have a vast majority who bought this for what it is and not what it can be hacked to, you're pretty much in the minority. So if you want the latest and greatest vanilla that breaks functionality most of us want, then you better bone up on your development skills.

This article claims that the Flyer will be shown by HTC in February running ICS.
Rumor has it that, in the coming months, HTC will unveil the first tablet underpinned by the new Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core platform. It seems that the HTC quad-core tablet will be revealed at Mobile World Congress 2012, event that takes place in Barcelona, in late February. Of course, the information is not official, bit it seems that it’s coming from a source close to the situation. Anyway, a lot of things can change in three months. At the Catalonian event, HTC will also reveal the Flyer and Jetstream models with stylus support and running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

That makes sense, honeycomb source code is a subset of ICS so most of the hard work is already done. Can't wait for stable HC. IcS Will come in due time.

OK, I'm a noob to tablets...just bought a SGT 10.1 a week ago. That said, I have a question about future ROMs for our tabs.
So, ICS is just around the corner...and so are future custom ROMs. Here's the question: Since people feel that ROMs like Task 10 (and others) already make our SGT 10.1s perform pretty fast...what changes can we expect that will actually make our experience better on the same device?
I must admit, I probably have pretty low expectations as my stock tab already performs pretty well for me. I want to try the Task 10 ROM to see how much better my tab can perform, though. I've just downloaded ADW to customize my whole device which to me is pretty cool in itself...but it got me to wondering what I should expect from ICS and the likes of CM9 to make things even better?
While I work in the tech world, I'm now a little removed from being the techie I once was. So, perhaps I'm just old and appreciative of what I have now comparing to what I had yesterday? Where do we go from here on the current h/w in our SGT 10.1?
Cheers!
hi , does enyone know if there will be a port from android to lumia ?
because that would be pretty cool , having te possibilit yto run android on this epic phone
i love WP7 but there arent that many awesome apps , so thats why i would love the possibility to run android
anywayz , have fun with your phone !
and i know this isnt Q&A but that forum doesnt exist yet so i post this Q here

It will never happen. Two completely different systems. I'm coming from Android and I for one would not want to ruin this phone with putting Android on it. I find WP7 so much more modern and refreshing.
I do not miss force closes nor lag.
I'm not negative to the possibility. I'm just sure it's not possible.
Hi,
I don't think it will happen. Due to there not being that many developers for the lumia. I also thing most of the hardware could be used in android, Seeing as the HTC Desire S and the Sony Xperia Arc use the MSM8255 Snapdragon(but i could be wrong, I have only really started developing).
I just dont see any real advantage of running Android on the Lumia. It is already a great device. I could only see thing going downhill if you did. Your device would have alot of lag plus the lumia only has 512mb of ram. And everybody that has used android will tell you 512mb of ram is sufficiant but not enough to run smoothly or run any intense apps.
You could, but you'd have to ask Dark Forces Team and Cotulla to release either a port of MAGLDR or the source to it to modify the chain boot loader.
Something I'd love to see but doubt we will ever see. I personally just got a Lumia 800 and although it's a nice phone the software lapses too much and in too many places so back to Android I go...even if it is the newer Android which is skinned over and too customised!
As I know the bootloader of lumia is very secured and will not allow modifications like dualOS booting.
1. You are crazy.
2. People always want what they can't get.
Technically it is possible. We have already seen examples of porting Android to older WM devices, like HTC HD2, HTC Touch Cruise, but it involves a lot of work and knowledge in system hacking.
Once you have cracked bootloader you can boot whatever you want. All you need to do is to find a device with the same chipset already running Android and port it over. Of course there will be many driver problems like non working, BT, WiFi, camera etc, but hey, what did you expect.
I bet that there is the same question in Nexus forums - How can we port WP7 to Galaxy Nexus
If you want the Lumia with android, sell it and buy the Nokia N9

You're both crazy, why didn't you just go Android? Strange people?
Yeah I bought this phone to get rid of Andrpid myself. I'm so sick of it!
Why the hell would you want freakin' Android to run on a WP like this?? You're crazy, that's clear
Android only has negative sides, WP is refreshing and smooth. I don't see ANY reason why you would want Android to mess up this beatiful phone.
Okay, I'm an Android hater, that's clear, but let me point it out:
Android is a copy of iOS (it's just boring)
It lags all the way
You need a nuclear power plant to keep it running for 1 day
The user experience is not consistent on all devices (not even with the same OEM!!)
Updates? Yes, if you do it all yourself
Open? Oh, thank you for your openness Android, and the malware...
I can go on if you'd like, but I think it's clear why I don't see this as a good idea...
Lol, that was one of the dumbest trollings I've seen, _Madmatt.
For me its WP which only has negative sides. Its locked, limited, the interface is counter intuitive in many places, can't multitask properly, most apps are inferior to android ones, upgrades are rolled out slowly and with the locked product codes you never know if you'll get the next one, etc.
Ah, and android is no copy of iOS, but the wp7 tiles ARE a copy of android widgets, with some functionality removed.
As for the hardware of the lumia 800, it is superior to my 2 years old N1, with a better CPU, GPU, and the same memory. And my N1 flies running MIUI, so even a crippled phone like this should even be better.
Why did I get a Lumia? I was offered it, tried to use it for some time, gave up, gave it to the wife, who is now begging for me to give her her blade back. Even the better screen and camera were insufficient to convince her to keep using the Lumia. She keeps complaining of the apps, of the terrible battery, of being unable to do anything. Even changing a ringtone is a mess, having to cut and resample a MP3 file before being able to use it as a ringtone.
So, it seems like the Lumia will end in a drawer until someone manages to port android or meego to it. Unfortunately as it was a gift I can't sell it, or it would be gone by now.

LOL, you think I have such things? No way mate
Android and WP7 are two completely different beasts. No point in comparing them it's all about personal preference.
I come from Android and WP7 suits me so much better even though I liked the freedom of Android compared to WP. I rooted and flashed roms like crazy. But I got tired of acting beta tester. So much bugs here and there on Android. Specially if running custom roms.
Sure there are more apps also with more functionality. But I prefer the metro styled WP7 apps as they most often fit the design of the OS. That can't be said about Android apps. Often ugly and no one looks the same making the user experience much worse.
The lagg was the biggest issue for me with Android though. No matter the hardware (SGSII) there is always lag because of how the Android OS is built up. Even ICS won't fix this fully with its hardware acceleration. This is a area where Google has failed. Giving a smooth user experience. Both iPhone and WP7 has this and understand its importance but Android can't unless they rebuild it from the ground which I don't think will ever happen.
Completely agree with ^^
I was active Android ROM builder, tester, themer etc for more than 2 years., but I think I just got tired of endless battle with force closes and laags. The biggest problem with android is that it does not run on native code but on interpreted layer dalvikvm. You can try as hard as you want, but you will always need double horse power for the same tasks on other platforms.
That's also explains why WP7 is perfectly smooth with x2 less CPU and RAM while latest Google flagship with nearly desktop PC power suffers laagspikes here and there. While those small laag spikes are less visible on smartphones things are just getting worse with tablets. Today there is no tablet running Android which can render UI transitions with 60fps.
You can read a blog from ex Google employee about that.
How about some Android graphics true facts?
I agree with you guys, after using android from G1,htc hero, desire S,nexus one,sg1 and 2,galaxy nexus,lg optimus black and apple 4 and 3gs with all the cusotm roms and modifications none of them stand above wp7 smoothness. I can say i never had a lag on my phone ever, where android and ios would lag here and there. Again e-mail aplication is just a joy to use,and all the animation how they smooth transit...it never stops to impress me. Ofcourse it has some shortcomings but definatelly will get better, especially with nokia's help.Aplication wise, well i don't use that many apps but the one i used definatelly looked better than android and apple,it's like the have more soul and not look so dull and borring.
At first i did not like the idea Nokia refused android but now i see that they done the right decision,i see it no better.

Well said. I had got used to the lag and didn't realise how bad it was until I got the Lumia.
I got sick of flashing ROMS too. CM7 was nice and stable, but when ICS roms came out I got sucked in. The gapps are all facelifted and are a lot nicer than Gingerbread. But then the ICS roms all have their issues and it just gets annoying.
I am looking into buying a new phone outright at full price and was wondering what are everyone's opinions on this debate.
I was looking at the Nexus and the biggest advantage seems to be the larger HD screen, that and the fact that it has a stock ICS build on it, without Samsungs TouchWiz that I hate so much. But, after looking at the F1 GalaxyNexus rom, I am almost turned more towards the S2, despite the fact that it has a lower resolution screen.
Now, does ICS with F1 GalaxyNexus on the GS2 perform just as well if not a little better than that of ICS on the Nexus? Overall, the GS2 has an 8mp camera, also, from looking at review and whatnot, it seems to be slightly more responsive than the Nexus despite very similar if not the same specs.
Basically, all I want is to get a few opinions on which you guys would choose, GS2 with F1 GalaxyNexus or a stock Galaxy Nexus.
Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
i would say go with galaxy nexus if you cant be bothered with bugs and want timely updates(though s2 will get it once xplod completes his kernel)
go with gs2 if you want a powerful phone that can handle future apps and games without a problem
winner : GS2

I am switching to Android as I currently own a Samsung Focus with Windows Phone 7.5. Don't get me wrong, Windows Phone 7.5 is a great OS, but it is not customizable even in the slightest. I previously had an HD2 and LOVED putting different ROMs on it whenever I got bored with how the phone was. So, what I am saying is that I'm getting into Android simply for the ability to customize and tinker with anything that I want. So bugs will not really bother me. Thank you for your reply!
good to have you here
here are the remaining bugs that team hacksung is currently working to fix
the usual stuff is working http://teamhacksung.org/wiki/index.php/CyanogenMod9:GT-I9100:Nightly:Known_issues
this is the cyanogen mod 9 thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1419102
i would suggest that if u want a aosp rom stay on cm9 because bugs are fixed on it first than the other rom makers patch their builds
As its a question its in the wrong forum . Buy a Nokia .

first off
this is not the questions section but i will be kind and anwser it before a mod removes it
hardware is good rocking a 1.5 dual core wich is faster then stock sgs2 (wich i also own)
sony's UI is not bad still has some left overs from official ics look but overall it has a good appeal
no phone does not lag even when i have serious multitasking going on never had issues not even on ICS
root does not mean the phone is faster
hope this anwsers your questions

I dunno. I like the XS way more than the SGS2, mostly for design and camera reasons. Sony's UI is not horrible like TouchWiz, though I still prefer AOSP since it looks lighter. There's a bit of a problem with custom ROMs now, but we're quite close to getting a temporary hack while Bin4ry works out a better solution.
