[Q] Jelly Bean Broke Music Playlists??? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

If this has been answered, I really apologize--site search is down right now and my google search only returned results from before the Jelly Bean update (when playlists worked fine for me).
I used to run MeanROM 4.6, and the HTC music app worked beautifully with my playlists. I use Media Monkey to manage my music, and it would sync to my external SD card (using HTC Media Sync mode on the USB connection menu). I updated to MeanBean 2.81 last night and have not been able to get playlists to work since.
Since the SD card was unchanged, I originally just went into the music app to test it. When I open a playlist, it would say "No music found." So I tried re-syncing it with Media Monkey, which had no impact at all. Then I deleted the playlists and all music from the SD card, wiped the music player's data and cache, and tried re-syncing, but that also had no impact.
Then I restored a backup of the ICS music app. No difference.
Then I deleted the device from Media Monkey and set it up as a new device. No difference.
Then I uninstalled the drivers for the device and installed the HTC Sync software (which comes with drivers, of course). No difference.
To see if it was my computer or something with the phone, I synced the same playlist I was using for testing to my ASUS TF700. Synced fine. Playlist shows up in the Play Music app, so I looked in the Play Music app on the EVO - playlist doesn't appear.
When I connect both devices to the computer and look at the playlist file (both of which show 0 bytes, but I guess that's normal), I am able to see a reference tab with the track listing on the TF700's file, but not the EVO's file (see below).

I'm out of ideas... what is going on and how can I get my playlists back? I have a workaround to be able to organize my music (I can have Media Monkey sync them with play order prefixes to folders named for the playlists), but that's not the ideal solution... I know the JB update broke a lot of stuff, but I didn't see any reports that this one was one them.
Thanks for any help you can provide!

Nobody has any ideas?

Do they playlists show up when you do that? I have all my music on the external, and the songs show up just fine--it's just the playlists that aren't cooperating.
I can absolutely move my music to the internal storage, I just prefer to use my external for music and leave the internal for everything else.

Yes it totally works too. Don't have to re download album art all the time as well. I just had delete a bunch of songs and keep my absolute faves, 2gbs worth

I shall give it a try this weekend. Thank you for replying!
I just moved the playlist folder to the internal memory to see if that could be a simple solution... I'll post back if it does (it's scanning now).

No luck. Synced one playlist to the internal memory and it still comes up empty on the phone.

Worked for me but I created the playlist on htc music, not by syncing anything
Been around awhile, it's just time for a new screen name...

Just as an update, I tried using HTC Sync Manager, but it would never recognize my phone. I then downloaded WinAmp to both my phone and laptop in the hopes that it could handle its own playlists, and had zero luck there. I still absolutely cannot get my playlists to sync properly.

Try this

MathMan85, had the same thing happen to me last night. I can't get Windows Media Player to sync the playlists to my SD card anymore after the update... but here's what I did:
1) Took the SD card out and put it directly into the laptop... Came up asking to scan saying something was wrong and needed to be fixed. I let it scan and nothing was wrong.
2) I installed DoubleTwist on my phone and then on my laptop..
3) Imported the Playlists from Media Player
4) Deleted everything in my music directory... (You dont have to but I was frustrated last night and did it.)
5) Started the Sync.
6) Once completed, I looked at the app on the phone and clicked Playlist and everything was there.
7) I had the Music Widget mounted on a windows on my phone and removed it... Replaced it with the DoubleTwist Widget...
8) Everything is working now.
Not sure what happened but that's how I worked around it.

I'll give it a shot tonight. Thanks!

So... in the process of trying that, I've found that if you sync it as mass-storage, the playlists work fine. It simply cannot sync playlists in MTP mode.
Thank you for the recommendation that led me to finding this out, though! (DoubleTwist only syncs MSC, and was giving me problems after my first test sync, so I retried Media Monkey with MSC and it worked fine.)

... so after a ROM update, I decided to look into this a little further since this doesn't seem to impact too many people. As it turned out, I think the problem in my case was my version of Media Monkey. I bought the software a long time ago, and since they charge for updates, I never updated. I tested syncing on my girlfriend's laptop, since she has a newer free version of Media Monkey and it synced just fine. Installed the newest version of Media Monkey and the problem went away entirely.
So if you have an old version of Media Monkey (or I suppose any media software) and experience empty playlists, just update and see if that resolves your problem.
If you don't want to do that, my workaround involved exporting each playlist as an .m3u, opening each in notepad, copying the contents into Excel (cell A1), entering the following formula in cell B1
Code:
=IF(LEFT(A1,3)="..\","..\"&RIGHT(A1,LEN(A1)-FIND("\",A1,4)),A1)
copy the formula down to the end of the playlist, copying column B into the .m3u file and re-saving (as .m3u), syncing with Media Monkey in MTP mode with the destination as /Music/<filename>, and then copying the .m3u into the music folder on the phone. To explain why this works, the .m3u is essentially just a list of track locations, and the formula takes the original computer locations and trims them to just be the filenames, which is how you synced the files to your phone. Thus, you've created an .m3u file that defines paths to the tracks on your phone. You can see why I wanted to look further into this... this is a PITA to do when you sync many playlists and frequently make changes.
Hope this helps someone, though.

Set own message tone on X10

This is my first dabble in Sony Ericssons, hope it doesnt dissapoint!
How do I set my own edited MP3/WAV file as the message ringtone?
I can set MP3 files as call ringtones, but no matter what I try the list for message ringtones just remains the same, giving me about 12 different options such as "message" "notification" "waterfall" ect.
I thought it may be a simple hack into the phone itself and locating the folder to add the file manually, but I cant seem to get into the phone.
Other that that I'm quite impressed,
if I remember correctly, then you can download an app for that on the market. I can't remember the name at the moment sorry.
anyways, if you download a soundboard you can normally make one of the sounds there into a sms tone etc.
On the SD card you have a folder called "media" in this folder there is a folder called "audio" in this audio folder make 3 new folders "notifications" "ringtones" and "alarms". (The notification folder may already be there)
Place your rintones in the "ringtones" folder and so on.
Ahh fantastic thank you!
In the end I opted for the simple way and downloaded tonepicker from the app market
thanks again
This didn't work for me but maybe I'm being thick. I also can't set mp3 as ringtones. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, if only I knew how! I personally love the luXury-tone but it's a standard tone.
But okay... I've checked a couple of programs and the only program that will let me change messaging ring tone to anything beyond the default ones is PandaHome, but that feels a bit overkill.

When playing anything through mediascape, menu, (left button) set as ringtone.
And my ask- Ive put a few jpeg folders into the default 'picture' folder through windows explorer, its good and quick ect but.. when playing back through mediascape the photos are out of order ie, not as when set in windows. It is the same with any of the folders i put in.
So when im looking through a folder full of trip photos (from last year say) the middle pics are in front of the start ect, anyone else noticed this ?
Could it be the order that windows copied stuff over (unordered) or does the phone need help sorting stuff alpha-numericaly ?
To be addressed with an update or just my problem.
I took the advice from brodos 123 and that definitely worked for me . All the mp3s I put into the "alarms" and "ringtones" folders I set up appeared on the phone when I went to change the relevant tones.
Also my sister didn't have a "media" folder on her X10 (yes we both use the X10). So I told her to set up a "media" folder, and within it set up an "audio" folder, and then set up the other folders brodos 123 described. This worked for her, so not sure why it didn't work for you Veegar. Could re-try?

Got the same problem. I have noticed that in the "download" folder (where MMS photos go), the latest added photo appears first. You might be right about using the ordered that windows copied things in.

Ok doesn't matter now. Turns out to work if I follow the steps using my PC while the phones hooked up as opposed to moving the files using the phone itself. Seems wierd to me but hey it worked and i don't need to use Tonepicker anymore
Does Rings Extended work on the X10? It's a free app that let's you set whatever tone you want.

Step 1. Create a folder named "media". (if you don't already have one)
Step 2. Create a folder named audio.
Step 2. Create folders named ringtones, notifications, alarms & music.
Step 4. Goto settings and select your tunes.
In regards to the email, that should be the same as your message tone, it is for me and don't know how to choose a different one just for that, the calendar I'm also not sure about but think it would be the same as email and txt, as there is only one standard setting for "notifications".

Music Sync Issues-Playlists

Hello,
So I use doubletwist to sync all my music which I have a lot of playlists set up in iTunes. The problem is, everytime I add to my playlists and sync, when the SD Card is rescanned, all my playlists get doubled and I have to go back and delete.
This didn't happen on my EVO when I would sync but it does on the rezound. I use the Winamp android app and even when freezing the HTC Music app (thought it was the cause) it still does it.
Is there any possible way to fix this? It really is annoying to have to go back and delete... one time I had 3 copies of the same lists...
Thanks.

Yeah, noticed this too. Very annoying. I have a ticket in to HTC CS asking about it. When I get a response I will post it here.
would probably be a good idea to let doubletwist know of the issue also in case there's some sort of 'fix' they can do on their end.
most of the time i just use a simple folder based mp3 player but times when i use the stock 'music player', upon first opening the app, it'll give some error msg that there's no music found & i'll have to close & re-open, then the music is available.

Thing is, it is not doubletwist that is doing it. Even when I tried to use HTC Sync (which annoyingly added "iTunes" in front of all of them) it doubles on each sync. Also I should mention that on the SD Card itself, only 1 of each playlist is on the card and not doubled. I think it has something to do with the fact there is phone storage as well as the sdcard.
I too have the Rezound and am seeing this issue. The playlist-doubling will also occur if I connect it as a Disk Drive. Viewing the SD card files through a Disk Drive connection only shows 1 of each playlist, even when Music shows multiples. if I delete a playlist and disconnect, the next time I launch Music the playlist is still there. It seems like it's caching the playlists in memory and adds whatever is on the SD card to it's mem cache resulting in "doubling".
FYI: I only use the basic Rezound Music app. Never had doubleTwist or a similar app.
I got a response from HTC tech support on this issue. A basic blow off: clear cache, reboot, go away.
Snip.
I first suggest you try clearing the data from the music player. You can clear the data from the music player by going to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications then tap Music then tap clear data. Once you clear the data from the application you will then restart your device. If this does not resolve the issue then you will want to try a 3rd party music player from the Android Market to see if you have the same issue.

Yeah, me too. It doesn't work. I told them so and then they said to do a factory reset. What a load.
So has anyone found a fix? It has to do with the media storage app, cause when I clear the data on it they disappear (sadly have to reboot as well since the ringtones disappear with it)
I experienced the same problem with stock music player and Poweramp. I was using HTC Sync. I never found a true fix for the problem but I found a solution for me. I stopped using HTC Sync. I'm now using iSyncr. No more doubling up and it has a better filing system. I have my music kind of buried on my PC and HTC Sync was using the same files on my phone. iSyncr has a music folder and puts everything in there. Sorry it's not a true fix but there are other options out there.

I don't know if this is the same issue but this might fix the problem. I had double everything showing up as well and here is how I fixed it, originally posted in here:
I found the setting that tells the music app where to look/scan for music files. I have mine all in a folder I created on the external card called Music. The phone's settings had that checked as well as /mnt/sdcard I believe, can't remember now what other folder was checked, but got rid of double listings by making sure only my Music folder was checked.
Settings > More > Settings > Music Folders
Then select the folder where you keep all your music and deselect any others voila, no dupes. Hope this works for you guys.

A fix for duplicate titles in stock music app
I encountered this phenom the other night when using airsync to xfer tracks to the sd card instead of internal storage. Double twist warns that this is experimental, and sure enough, that's when things got off kilter. Long story short, I deleted the music directory on the sd card and then moved the untouched music directory from internal storage to the sd card. I then made sure that the music directory in the internal storage was truly empty. I then performed a clean cache followed by a reboot. Both doubletwist and the stock player are keyed to the sd card directory, and voila, no more duplicates.

I have no problems with the music app and the music files I copied onto my sd card.
All I did was make a "Music" folder on the external (?) card, the one that mounts second and is NOT named "HTC Storage". Copied my music in there so the next directory down is the band name (Music > PJ Harvey > [album]) and everything works as it should. When I went into the music app the phone scanned for my library, found everything, and I am able to switch between viewing by album, artists, songs etc. with no problem.
I had no idea how to get my music on there since there is no mention of it in the manual so I just tried that out and it worked.

Okay, so driving home tonight I went into PowerAmp to pick some music to play and I saw double listings for the albums. I had just been in the stock music app and not seen that but switched to PowerAmp because I had set the EQ in that. And I left it to see if it would play each song twice and it did.
Now I'm looking at it at home and I just noticed when I look at under the "folders" tab I see the duplicate listings and also see ".sounds" at the top with the dir listed as /sdcard/Spacephysics. The two directories that have music are /sdcard/ext_sc/Music (the folder I made) and /music. When I look at it under the "Library" tab I don't see duplicates unless I go into the albums and look at the song lists.
Stock app still fine.
I'm kinda anal when it comes to my music but just as Fera stated...created a general folder called "Music" and add sub-folders for each Artist and then each album. It would also help if you have the .MP3 tags correct so you don't have files all over the place.
That's what works for me at least.

What app are you using?
I'm not sure how these are tagged. I had just gotten my tagger all set up and started to get all my mp3s organized and tagged and then my laptop died. HDD was fine so I pulled it and got all the data copied off of it so hopefully I can grab my settings file for the tagger prog but haven't gotten back into mp3 organizing yet.
Do you know what causes the duplicates? I've been reading about apps not dealing with the external sd card properly, so is it just the case of the app needing to be updated and nothing we can do about this on our side?

Yea pretty much nothing can be done unless the app devs fix the issue or we get permanent root and can re-mount the SD cards however we see fit.

I've been using the stock app for my music currently and I have had no issues with duplicates except for newer files I haven't fixed the .mp3 tags on.
Edit: I just installed PowerAmp (the only other music player I will use besides stock) and I noticed my library was also showing duplicates. If you go under settings when viewing your folders you can select Menu->List Options->Path and that will get rid of the duplicate listings.
This is a beta version of PowerAmp so maybe they're still working out the bugs though? I never had that issue before and I even had the paid app.

Actually that doesn't do it. That just sorts it so that the list is duplicated but one entire list at a time based on location. But since I didn't memorize where you told me to go I found the setting that tells it exactly where to look/scan for music files.
Settings > More > Settings > Music Folders
Then select the folder where you keep all your music and deselect any others voila, no dupes.

Awesome. Glad you figured it out. I've never had to deal with that.

Help with music problem

Hello All,
I wondered if one of you experts may be able to help me with an issue I'm having with my SIII please? I'm a long time browser of the site but haven't posted much until now.
This issue is coming between me and my sleep (and I mean that literally.)
I can't seem to master the art of getting music onto my S3. I thought it would be as simple as using iSyncr as I had with my S2. Alas, no.
Because of the changes to the mass storage mode (I am running a Mac), I have to download the Android File Transfer thing to connect my phone at all to my Mac.
When I use iSyncr now, it's slightly buggy. I put the phone into MTP mode, it starts copying music across and then after a certain number of tracks, it throws up an MTP issue where it says certain songs can't be copied. I then have to go around the houses and start clearing data from the media storage app in my settings and rebooting the phone. Then, I try again and get so far and the same thing happens again with different songs.
Also, when some songs transfer the albums appear split in the phone (though this is minor annoyance compared to the above).
I have left it on overnight and come back to my computer and it all looks finished, yet of my 6700 songs, only 3400 have transferred.
I've tried going the old fashioned way and spend last night dragging and dropping files onto the memory card using the Android File Transfer mode. I got one message saying a song couldn't be copied, yet when I actually got up and checked, again, only 3400 odd songs had transfered. There were no error messages and we're not talking DRM songs that hadn't gone across.. but some that I had ripped myself. It's all very odd.
Don't mention DoubleTwist - that's even worse.
This is really driving me mad as I am a big music player and I don't want to fork out for and have to carry an iPod too. I just sold my iPhone to use the S3 as I assumed it would be simple like the S2 but this is making me so upset with the phone. It's as though Google have deliberately locked out Mac functionality.
It's an unlocked unit, with a sandisk 64GB card inside. That was formatted by the phone and when I tried using a card reader instead, the computer said it couldn't be recognised.
I'm throwing myself at your knowledgeable feet here and hoping that somebody knows exactly what is happening here and what it is I could do to fix it. My entire weekend has been wasted sitting in front of this computer and I really want to fix it.
Please help.
Thanks in advance.
Can't help with your immediate issue I'm afraid (waiting for my S3 and I don't have a mac... ) but have you contracted the devs of iSyncr to let them know of the issue - at least that way they can start working on an update.

I sure have!
Thanks for contacting me and pointing me to this thread.
First off, I've pre-ordered the international S3 so that I can test this out. We just do not have them in Texas yet.
Secondly, I've been unimpressed with Android's MTP's robustness on other devices. I filed several bug reports for different scenarios that corrupt the MTP database in March of 2011. Zero have been touched by Google. Given this, the first thing we should try is rebuilding the MTP database, which lives inside the "Media Storage" app. I've put these instructions in an easy to follow tutorial.

Please let us know if that helps the issue.
Cheers!

Don't suppose anyvody has any solution for this? Really don't want to take my S3 back but will have to at this rate. I think it's shocking that the S3 is so crippled from a Mac's perspective since the changes to MTP. Android File Transfer app doesn't really fix anything.
I have the same problem. Even using AFT, it wil not see the phone until I put it into PTP mode. THen I can copy data to it. isyncr see the phone in MTP mode but keeps telling me device failed to load.
I'm going to mention
I know I shouldn't mention it but here you go Double twist!
Right I've had some problems and this is what actually worked.
First you have to use itunes. If your music is a mess then a app on the app store called 'dupin' will remove any duplicate songs you have (it worked well for me). if you have lots of dead file links in your library just remove all your library files and then click 'add to library' be careful that itunes does not copy the files you add to the itunes music folder - see preferences.
1. Make a 'new playlist' --> add all your songs to it (press command+a etc). If you have a large music library like me then you can make a 'smart playlist' and limit the size of the playlist, handy eh!!
2. Open doubletwist on your mac and immediately make sure in 'preferences' the 'automatic sync' option is switched off (I had an incident where my whole library syned with 2 of my external hardisks...oops...and the funny thing is that one of the hard disks was where the music stored). Make sure the 'import itunes playlists' option is also selected.
3. In the doubletwist andriod app Select the SD card as library storage and Enable the 'Airsync' function in doubletwist (you will have to pay for the app but in my opinion it's worth it - it also supports ACC files).
4. Enter the pair code into the mac application.
5. Select the option to sync your playlists only (don't try anything fancy!!). You should see the one you made in itunes here.
6. THIS IS THE IMPORTANT BIT: you should by now see the 'airsync' icon at the top of the screen. PULL DOWN THE NOTIFICATION CENTER AND TOUCH THE 'DOUBLETWIST IS SYNCING'. You will see a funky swirly multicoloured wheel LEAVE THE PHONE ALONE UNTILL ALL YOUR MUSIC HAS SYNCED ACCROSS.
Dont lock your phone as this seems to mess it up...
Hope this helps. I understand your pain, I lost a weekend too!
Notes: Podcasts and DRM stuff does not sync.
Notes: If your playlist is not the full size of your music library then if the 'live updating' option is turned on in your smart playlist then when you click sync in doubletwist it will sync different songs each day (I think...)
If none of the above works, you always have a nice shiny 50gb of free dropbox storage as an interim solution

If you are already an iSyncr user, as this person is, there is no reason to leave me for doubleTwist. We've got iSyncr WiFi, which we came out with before doubleTwist and is only a .99 cent upgrade. If you've got an issue with it, just email me, and we'll make sure it works on your S3.

If its possible, try installing VMware fusion, and you can run windows inside your MAC in a virtual machine, you can try this if everything else fails...
You know where to download these softwares
You can try for free...and find the serial key easily using Google.

I purchased the isycr wifi option and it is working fine... I think they have a "lite" version that you can try, but it only syncs one playlist or something, but you can see if it works or not. But that is what I am using now.

[Q] Strange Issue: Stock Music Player loses Playlist & Settings after every reboot

[Q] Strange Issue: Stock Music Player loses Playlist & Settings after every reboot
I'm on Stock ICS and every time i reboot my SGSIII, the stock music player loses all my playlists and settings. I've got the same issue on JB (DLIB).
Can anyone help me with this please? Or can anyone tell me, where the stock music player stores the Playlist? Did a forumsearch, but i only found this old an unanswerd thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979931
Thanks!
Anyone?

I have seen this on through LI8 leak but with the AOSP music player on the market, really annoyed me.

I don't have this issue, but similar... after I play a music, if I disconnect the headset after a while (can't say how long) when I plug again the headset, the music starts not from the point were was left, but from the start. This also happens if I restart the phone!!!
I don't get it... is this right?!? Is this a bug or a "feature"?!?!
Samsung, were are in 2012!!! My previous music players, google music and sense player did this!!!
Apologies for bringing back an old thread, but I'm having a similar problem where the playlists in the stock music player app never seem to retain their songs after plugging the phone into a PC to do some backup or synching for example. This is on the 4.1.2 BTU update. Anyone know of any ideas on how to fix it? I have tried dismounting the SD Card (Where all the songs are) and reinserting it.
I am experiencing the same problem. The actual playlist doesn't get deleted but the contents of all playlists gets deleted. It's caused by the external SD card getting unmounted. I found out that if I bump my phone (eg. by putting it down on a table a little too hard or throwing it on my bed) my external SD card will sometimes get disconnected briefly (a warning message does get displayed at the top in the notification area but it just flashes by briefly so you might miss it) and after that all of my playlists have been emptied out. To prove this is the cause I tried to unmount the SD card manually via Settings and the same thing happened to the playlists. Also when you connect to a PC I believe the SD card gets unmounted from the phone so it can be accessed via the PC. The strange thing is the playlists don't seem to be stored on the external SD card. I took my SD card out of my phone and plugged into my PC and did a search. Couldn't find any playlist files. There is a folder on the internal storage card called Playlists and I can see a bunch of files in there that have the same name as all of my playlists. These files don't seem to store the actual playlists though because they are all emtpy zero length files and their modification data is set to the the day I first created the playlist even though I have added songs to the playlist since then.
Can anyone please provide an explanation of how the stock player stores playlists or how to back them up? I would like to at least be able to backup my playlists in case they get cleared out again.
Oyyyy
Well that blows. My s2 didn't do this, my s3 sure does tho. Sounds like when the SD is unmounted, it notices files no longer exist, and removes them from playlist. Definitely supports my hatred of the Nexus line (no SD card so Google likely just overlooked this).
Anyways, I read this as a some-what fix:
"I use MyBackup Pro to save my playlists, it does a really good job but have just recently changed all mine to M3U playlists which I store and update on my PC. I just move them to my music folder on the sdcard of the phone and my media players (mixzing, stock player, amazon mp3 and google music) all recognize them. This save me a lot of hassles if something gets lost or not backed up right."
I haven't tried yet, but it's better than having to re-create playlists I suppose.
Pro-tip: Create a tasker/local/NFC launch to backup playlists weekly/ whatever
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and just stumbled upon this post... I unmounted my SD Card and then re-mounted and bam... The playlist on my stock music player is gone. I tried to restore data only from Titanium Backup and MyBackup Pro. No luck... will now try to restore just the data partition image which I made a few days ago.
Hopefully this will bring it back, if not, will have to do a full Nandroid Restore.
This should not happen if I choose to unmount and then remount the sdcard to refresh data.
I have done this by accident again, even knowing that this would happen. Back to the drawing board.

I sincerely doubt a Nandroid restore is necessary, just delete all music off the phone/sd card, and send the playlists to the phone again...I've done this several times.
No idea why it keeps happening, it is annoying, but I have all the playlists stored in Winamp, so I just send them to the SD card, and I'm back up and running in short order.

No disrepect, but it does not make any sense to have to delete all of my music to restore a playlist. I do not use Winamp so not a viable solution for me. I found out that the default players can see playlists under the internal sdcard card, music, then playlists folder. As I said I have a T-Mobile Note2.
The reason my for post was that Playlists should not be lost when unmounting and re-mounting of your external sdcard.
