Considering a Note2 but... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Considering the new update I am now hesitant. Can Someone tell me what Baseband version I want to AVOID so that the bootloader is unlockable?
I would also love to know the ramifications of getting stuck on the new Bootloader, IE will I still be able to root, but be stuck with the Stock Rom? Will I still be able to use TiBu to remove system apps, or add them? Etc?

well it has taken me a while but I have answered all my questions but one, if the phone is on the locked bootloader, but rooted, can i add and remove system APKs without bricking the phone?

I havent really tayed up to date on the unlocking since mine was unlocked from day one but get the phone its sick as it is and be patient adam is the man and bootloader will be unlocked again

Dont let the store apply the update. Tell them and be firm that you don't want it...

You don't have to let the store activate it at all. You can do what I did and tell them you just want a new phone in the box and tell them you are going to activate it yourself.

Well, the process that FlashBack21 goes through before it unroots insures that it can be re-rooted extremely easily - with any of the existing methods.
If you knew that a buyer was going to prefer a certain Rooted ROM - let's say for instance the ROM that you are already using - you could just perform a "Wipe data/factory reset" in Amon_RA, followed by a SD card wipe. That would "reset your rooted ROM". Or you could follow up FlashBack21 with a re-rooting by OneClick or Dummies - that leaves the main OS software on the phone untouched, but re-installs the Amon_RA custom recovery. Then the buyer can put whatever they want on the phone.
The only thing that will not do is de-activate your phone. But that is sort of irrelevant anyway, because if the buyer turned it on and dialed *228, it would just reactivate to your account anyway - you need to call Verizon when you hand over the phone and let them know you you don't want the phone associated with your account any longer.
If you are meeting the buyer, the logical place to make the transaction is right in the Verizon store - you can get the phone disassociated from your account, and the buyer can get it set up on his/her account right there. (If the buyer is smart, they will also first ask the VZW rep to check your ESN to make sure it is clean). That, and it's a safe place to conduct the transaction.

well cool...i didnt know that id have to tell verizon i dont have so thats good to know ...thanks that was a big help

daniel,
It occurs to me that if a VZW rep is going to transfer the phone to a different account right there in the store, they will probably perform a factory reset on the handset right there on the spot to "unprogram" (deactivate) the phone, because that's the easiest way for them to get it ready for the next account. That won't work correctly with anything but the stock recovery on the phone.
Just use Flashback21 - rooting the phone is easy these days; let the new buyer do it.

im just selling it to anyone on craigslist or anyone that wants to buy it even ppl on here that want a phone to test stuff. im gonna switch to blackberry i have so the phone wont be activated when i sell it.

cannot power on it!!!

i just update the 2.3.4 by recovery.
after it done, i change the fonts in the system.
I FORGOT TO CHANGE THE RIGHT FOR THE FILES
now, it cannot power on. even cannot enter RSD mode.
the screen just show __svf 105:1:2__
what can i do now.
Do you also see 0x1000 on the screen? Possible you bricked.
If so, you may want to read this --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1165154
I see people with the same error as you also getting the 0x1000.
What were you on, and what had you done, i.e. unlocked bootloader, before flashing?
Which 2.3.4 did you flash?
yes, i saw that numbers.
after i OTA to 2.3.4, i flashed into 1.6.8. i didnt do unlock for it.
so, as you know, the phone become a brick.
before that, i dont know it cannot downgrades

If there was no warning about downgrading after the OTA prior to you installing the upgrade, you could go to a store and argue with them that since there was no warning, you did not know you couldn't flash back.
lol.
even i argue with them, maybe my phone still sleep.
i dont want to arguing, just let it back.
thank you so much for providing many informations. im trying to unbrick it.
thanks a lot

there does not need to be a warning as the sfb's are not supposed to be public at all. So in flashing them you are already going against theme. Not to mention anyone at a store will most likely have no idea what your talking about lol. Its worth a shot tho.
cool.
im look that thread, but got some problems.
do you know how to use nvflash.zip
i mean, after i download that, how to keep going the steps.

So I need help deciding on a rom/other questions

So for the longest time I had a jailbroken iphone so everything I'm used to is about iOS. I've had my Atrix for about 4 months now and I've been fairly happy with gingerblur, but I heard there was some new updates or other things going on. I dunno if I want an unlocked bootloader, I seriously dont know what to do because I want to start over and just start from scratch.
Suggestions or do I need to provide info? I just want to update my phone
what features do you use currently?
what new features do you want?
To be honest I dunno what features I use
I just want to be able to download apps and not worry about them being locked or not from a "trustworthy" source.
I dont know what's different between gingerblur and stock
I have had the atrix for a while now and right after i got it i rooted and installed gingerblur and was happy with that but being curious i just recently did the update unlocked the BL rooted and am now running the alien rom and am very happy with it. Updating is rarely a bad thing. just takes time Hope this helps

could you post what you did exactly?
what update did you do to unlock the bl? There's so many things I just dont understand no matter what I do
or just links to w/e I dont mind
One bump before I head out for the evening
ok i used a couple different places but ill try to explain
first of all i had titanium backup to restore most of my apps and everything because you will lose everything. just a heads up.
1. I used this to rsd flash the "Full 2.3.4 sbf..."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204
2. I then put the phone in fastboot and used this from #13 on
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
3. so now you are on 2.3.4. unlocked you can stay on just that if you want a stock rom. but i recommend rooting haha..
4. I could not get the root from #1 to work so i sorta worked my way around it.
5. I used this to get cwm recovery on my phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
6. then I flashed this file to obtain root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140110
7. Then flashed the alien rom from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186537
8. thats it i hope you can make sense of it since its kinda screwed up lol but everything is working great for me and im defiantly glad i updated. if you have any questions just ask
also if you do do this make sure you check for updates under development for the rom its already updated a few things in the week that ive had it.
Ok I lied I found what I want
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186537
I want that on my phone. Now my question is does this come with an "Unlocked bootloader"
Or do I have to do something to get an unlocked bootloader?
What does an unlocked bootloader even mean
what i posted will get you that exactly.
What you have right now is a locked bootloader, rooted with gingerblur from what i understand. with a locked bootloader you cannot have a true rom gingerblur is more of a theme that gets rid of the apps that slow your phone from the factory.
with an unlocked bootloader you can flash true roms and kernels etc..
Do people even try looking...

You can download this "over the air".

Was sold a voodoo unlocked sgs3

Hello everyone!
About a week ago, I went and bought the S3, my first Android phone. The sales guy told me that the phone is sim free but a Samsung's firmware update caused a bug, and that the phone needed to be sim unlocked because of Samsung's error. Needless to say I knew nothing about the phone (or Android).
After a few days of learning about it, I ended up seeing there is a Voodoo app in the file manager, CWM and SuperSU apps in the app drawer.
I came here to check what that was all about.
After reading extensively I now know that the phone is rooted and was sim unlocked with Voodoo app.
I red all about Voodoo and was impressed that it works with the fix, yet another user said this will cause problems in the future, and I already see some users complaining about their phones not working.
My question is, was the sales person lied to me about the Samsung firmware bug? And also, is the Voodoo app + fix is legit, and I can rest my worries aside?
I wouldn't like to have problems and having to wait for some (wonderful and admirable) dev to fix it, every time there is a firmware update.
Thanks in advance, excuse my noobishness.
If its unlocked.....ITS UNLOCKED
reboot, if its still unlocked then you are good. as far as the problems........i dont know of some sort of samsung bug that would f up a phone.
what are you really asking? will your phone all of sudden brick on you and become useless? i dont think so
In fact, there is no Samsung "bug": Samsung has just improve is Lock system which now break voodoo unlock (on purpose or not...)
In theory, it should only relock phones that had been unlock with voodoo app but here is the tricky thing: some shop sell "fake" unlocked phones!
-they took carrier locked phone
-they flash a stock rom
-they change the EFS file in the same way voodoo app would have done
-they sell it as unlocked
the old lock system do not break this and buyers will probably never see the trick but the new lock system just relock the phone and left people with a locked phone even if they think they have bought an unlocked phone
Just look at this post which is an answer to someone who had a relock on an "unlocked" phone with XXBLG8 firmware

So in fact, from now on, every time I flash an updated rom, I need to pray that samsung didn't (intentionally or not) break the voodoo unlock? Sort of like the Apple's cat and mouse game after the unlocks? Cause I'm not going through that again.
Here is a patch for preventing the sim to be locked after a update http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802951, need root and flash with CWM.

Thank you for the reply.
It seems as though the fix is allready applied, the thing that bother me is that
I will need to wait for a fix every time there is an update.
It's just that i'm afraid after owning a locked iphone, that was a nightmare.
Let's say that it is much better and more comfterbale to have an unlocked phone, am i right?

Does sim locked phones Known to cause problems down the road?

As you are rooted, it is better not to update through Kies or OTA. Kies updates will break root and thus voodoo sim unlock and OTA`s will not be installed as you have a custom recovery. Download future new roms from www.sammobile.com/firmware and flash it with (Mobile) Odin (Pro). See my signature for the procedure. With Mobile Odin Pro you keep root and with pc Odin you will loose root. If in the future you have to send it in for repair warranty can be denied because you are rooted.

So that makes it right for you to try and force your beliefs over another? These forums are about choice, filled with the information and tools to let regular users the ability to do what they want with their devices. This user has chosen to go back to stock. If they decide that they want to go back to a custom rom in the future they still have the choice to unlock and flash. It is their phone not yours. If you choose to help someone with an issue like this in the future, please do so objectively

I don't see anywhere in my post telling him he cannot go back to stock with the RUU. Im just telling him he might regret it later. I even gave him a link straight to the RUU so he doesn't have to look for it. never did i say NO you cannot go stock. He honestly might think that the only way to get the latest and greatest is being pure stock. I didn't do a good enough job, but there are stock roms with enhancements like Stock w/ Goodies that gives him all of Sprints latest and greatest, but more! He might really not be aware of that. How ever I am! should I not make him aware of that? Should I not tell him there are hundreds of guys who are not S-OFF. and want S-OFF for a reason?
I gave him the info he needs, and will give him more if he needs it, but I would feel like a douche if I didnt make him aware of the other alternatives which are much better and fix the issues present in Sprint's Stock Rom
And that's fine but to call their decision stupid is outright disrespectful. I gather it isn't your intention to do so, but there are ways to inform a user without insult
If you want to go back to stock, click on the link a few posts up, it isn't that hard to do. But while the RUU is running DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE until it runs its cycle, the link will tell you how to do it.
The RUU update failed. It told me my phone is tampered and unlocked. I don't care if I really have to keep it rooted, I just wanna know how to get the updates. If I knew how to get 4.0.4 with Sense 4.1 without unrootinv and using CWM, I would.
If you really want to be persistent, flash the stock and kernel for your base, flash stock recovery and relock bootloader so you can take an OTA

I don't know what any of that means :/ I have never rooted or unrooted a phone before.
you need to have adb and fastboot. Download it from my Dropbox here
https://www.dropbox.com/s/uw2nj95w2hktnvt/ADB.zip
unzip it to a folder and remember where its at. i suggest you put it on your C:\
now click run the CMD prompt. hold the WINDOWS key and push R at the same time. now type in
adb reboot bootloader.
once your phone is on the while screen with a bunch of text on it. type
fastboot oem lock
you are now locked. reboot your phone and run the RUU
Just saying, we should probably get his phone S-OFF. Afterwards he can stay completely stock and keep S-OFF until it starts mattering to him, as long as he doesn't pull a derp and fastboot oem writesecureflag 3.
