[Q] GS2 OTG Problem or...? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I bought a converted GS2, it was a M250S version, it's now converted to i9100.
I bought a OTG cable to connect pen drives and keyboards, and all that. The problem is, if I connect the cable, it says "USB Connector plugged in" (Something like that I'm translating it from Portuguese). I then procede to insert a pen drive or keyboard or anything else and nothing happens, I can't find the PEN DRIVE mounted on any place! Tried a lot of programs from the market, checked other topics and discussions, nothing helps my situation, why? Is there a common problem on GS2 or am I missing something?
I had NEATROM! Today I flashed OMEGA. All of them, full versions, and still OTG isn't working.
The real thing that bothers me is, the cable must be alright correct? Because the phone detects it, it only doesn't detect what I attach to it!
PS: If I insert a flashdrive with a LED light indicator, the LED normally blinks when its connected, it should blink as well when I conect it to the phone correct? It does nothing
I hope this has a easy solution, just went from an iPhone 4S to this GS2 because I tought it could help me at work, where I need to download files and transfer them into pen drives to use on other computers that down have internet access! The idea sounded awesome, but it isn't working

try connecting the pen drive to the cable first and then plug the cable into the phone. Go to settings>storage and see whether your pen drive is shown there as usb storage. If it shows then your otg works fine. Use root explorer and go to storage folder. Then you should have a folder called usb disk. That is your pen drive. If this does not work try connecting a usb mouse and see whether your otg cable works

Hmmm might it have something to do with the fact that the phone is partitioned? 2GB for the system and the rest appears under USB Storage, and then again I have a microSD card wich appears under SD Card, all these shown in Settings - Storage
BTW as said, should the leds get on ?!

Anyone with the same problem? Am I missing something?

Well make sure that the pendrive you're using is formatted FAT32 and not NTFS(for ntfs you'll need to use another app if you wanna mount it)..
Whenever a pendrive gets mounted on your phone...its mounted on directory Internal Memory>usbstorage if you're running stock...and shows up just below your mmc in settings>storage..
Also as soon as it gets mounted, in notification panel you get press to unmount...for unmounting the device..
If you still have problem you can use stickmount...
LED's of pendrive will get lit...
Press Thanx if i helped..

I connected a pen drive formatted as fat32, and a USB mouse (IE 3.0), the pen drive led doesn't light up, but as soon as I connect the OTG cabble it says USB Connector Plugged In (something like that I'm translating it from Portuguese) so the cable works I guess? but nothing connected to it does?
IDK what to do else because I changed roms already and I don't know if I'm missing something?

I have only one thing to say...
Have you tried it on stock rom?

No, I bought the phone already with a modified ROM, but shouldn't custom ROM's enable all these tweaks? Whats the diference?
I don't even know if I can get the stock rom back.
I tried on a friends GS2 and it appeared as the same way as in mine, and it's stock
Thanks

Very Strange....
Ok first of all insert Pen Drive into Female Port...
Then Plug the OTG into Micro USB
It Should Work, Worked for me Always

The message appears on the phone (same message as I when I plug only the cable) but the pen drives led doesn't lits and I can't find the pen drive as well.
What could be happening? I still need to give the seller the feedback and I don't know if it is the cables fault or not

I said first plug pen drive in cable and then plug otg into phone
Try itt

As I said I already did that! The same happens, "USB Connected" but it doesn't mount nothing and I can't find the PEN Drive, and the PEN Drive's LED doesn't light up.

Its cable fault then..,

Would a mouse work in a stock Nexus 7? Either way if the LASER doesn't light up then it's the cable fault right?
I can test it in a new Nexus 7 with stock ROM 4.2.1 later or tomorrow.

Working USB Host on HoneyComb!!!

As some of you know, I could get USB host to work on the release candidate of HoneyComb but not on the final release (3.55.405).
This morning I thought I would try again, my flyer was turned off (completely shut down) when I plugged in my portable hard drive (Seagate 120 gig using the Y cable one to a power supply the other to a USB micro USB adaptor).
I then booted up the Flyer … low and behold there it was. Shows up as USB in Astro but, does not show in Root Explorer.
I was able to watch my movies and play my music from the hard drive.
It seems like the flyer with latest HoneyComb will only see USB peripherals at boot time.
Great news!
If you care to try some other configurations, I'd love to get your results when using a usb keyboard or mouse?

Will do … just keep in mind that any device well need to be self powered (because the Flyers port does not provide power) I’ll try with a powered hub.

It works perfectly fine without rebooting. The only thing is that you have to umnount before unplugging. It worked for me even with one 1TB Harddisc.

What Rom are you using? Most of us have been unable to get Usb host working on the latest HoneyComb release.
Edit: just tried again and won’t work for me unless I boot with it plugged in. Also, booting takes a longer than normal time.

I don´t use a custom rom I use the HC stock rom. You have to have the "/mnt/sdcard/usb/" folder. If you don´t have it, create it. I use only as I mentioned a 1 TB Harddisk and I used also two different kind of 8GB USB Flashdrives with a Y-Cable with external powersupply and a Nokia OTG Cable.
They work all perfectly fine. Only I had to unmount the devices before I unplugged otherwise I needed to reboot as well for a another usb device.
I didn´t try any other peripherals.
I am not a "tecfreak", just an average user who likes to tinker and mess around with his gadgets. If you have any further question I can help you with, Please ask.
P.S.: before I used the Nokia Cable, I used another Micro USB Male to USB A Female Cable and that didn´t work, so If it doesn´t work for you than it might be caused by the wrong cable. ????

Been doing some more testing … I noticed (when using the Y cable on my drive) that when I power up the hard drive the charging light on the Flyer comes on.
So, somehow power is back feeding to the OTG cable.
This leads me to believe that it may work better (like Elfuente stated) with a different cable.
Perhaps the Nokia cable does not have the charging pins
Ps: I noticed that on my Y cable … one is labeled Power+Data the other is labeled Power
I had a rather long message typed about this but the browser crashed, I'll possibly retype most of that later, but for now suffice to say that cables are singnificant in these setups.

Ahhh there you are I was hoping you would show up. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be you. Do I smell another hardware hack?
Keeping in mind my abilities in this field are very limited but, I was thinking … if I could come up with a battery pack for a portable hard drive I could (with the proper cables) then just plug it in and have the ability to read and write to it.
Maybe another hack for an adapter to provide power from a battery with usb connector or mains usb charger but it should actually be fairly trivial to implement, so maybe a schematic also for anyone who is remotely comfortable with soldering.
The big difference between OTG and other usb modes is that pin 5 is electrically significant. When grounded it indicates to an otg capable device that it should go to OTG-A mode (OTG equivalent of host mode), when floating it's ignored and the device will not detect a connected device.

That´s exactly what I do. I travel a lot and was used to carry a netbook with me. Now I changed to the Flyer and use the external 1TB Harddisc with a BatteryPack as external powersupply (http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B003ZV1A1Y).
As I already mentioned: It works fine for me.

I ordered one of the Nokia cables and if it works for me.
I’ll then take both apart (drive and battery) and mill up a case to mount both of them in.
This only works with honey comb right?
and by the way, the disc has to be formated wit fat32.
... and yes I formated a 1TB harddisc with fat32, look here; http://www.thetfp.com/tfp/tilted-te...-formatting-large-hard-drives-32gb-fat32.html

[Q] TP with my 500gb ex hdd

I think this question has been asked before, but I still want to see if someone can answer me. I tried to hook up my 500gb external hard drive to my TP, with OTG cable and a isound portable charger. My hard drive turns on but have no sign say it's connected and can't find under folder explorer. Is it not possible for a hard drive? Also if I buy a Y-cable for usb thumb drive, can I watch movie directly from it? Thank you.

im using usb host controller (found it somewhere here on xda) and root explorer, works perfectly!
but your hdd must be formated in FAT32, NTFS is not working correct me if im wrong or anything has released wich provides this feature

just ordered one on ebay (only an adapter from normal usb to micro-usb) for 1$.
Along with the otg cable u also need a usb Wye cable...the need is to provide power (plugged into the wall) for the usb hub (which u will also need ). Not Neuf power and the drives will not mount. Getting a solar powered usb hub cuts away the cables and detached u from the wall...I got mine on Amazon for bout 20 $. Totally worth it.

[Q] OTG with external power/USB hub

I'm looking to be able to use my external HDD (1TB WD passport) on my phone via OTG. As I understand, ntfs support varies with kernels etc but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it as I think there's a more fundamental problem.
I've got an OTG cable, and my mouse, usb pen drive, keyboard etc work with it. The HDD doesn't, because the phone can't provide enough power to operate the thing. I thought I could get around this by connecting it via my usb hub (which runs off external mains power) but when I connected this up to the phone and plugged the HDD in nothing happened. Likewise, the mouse and pen drive etc could also not be recognised by the phone when they were each plugged in via the hub (one at a time, I wasn't trying to run 8 things at once!) even though they worked perfectly when the phone itself was powering them when they were directly plugged into the OTG cable (if that makes any sense).
So, assuming it was a problem with the hub, I instead tried the method in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1828032 and made my own y type cable so that now rather than the phone providing power to the OTG peripheral, the power now comes from a standard USB phone charger. I'm fairly confident that I did all the soldering correctly and there weren't any short circuits.
When I tried using this, I had the same issue as with the hub. None of the mouse, the pen drive etc could be recognised with the modified OTG cable, which was odd as physically nothing had changed from the point of view of the peripheral plugged into the OTG (the data cables connecting it to the phone were unchanged, and it was still getting 5V power, just from the wall rather than my phone) which makes me think perhaps the problem is a software one where the phone only recognises a USB peripheral/begins USB host mode if the peripheral is actually draining power, since the power leads running from the phone side of the OTG cable are now just an open circuit.
Just to confirm I hadn't just snipped a data cable by accident when modifying the OTG cable, I re-soldered the OTG cable to how it originally was and it worked the same way it had previously. This means all the data cables are still intact, so I think it must be a software issue.
I thought maybe a way of testing this would be to modify the y cable and connect the red and black power cables coming out of the phone to each other via a fairly hefty resistor (so you still get power flowing from the phone even though the USB peripheral is powered by the wall). But it seems a bit dangerous!
Has anyone else had trouble with this? I've read around on forums and for a lot of people USB hubs and y type OTG cables seem to "just work", although I've not seen anyone with an i9300 reporting success. I'm running the latest version of liquidsmooth, but have also tested on CM10.1 and have the same problem. It might be an AOSP thing that stock samsung firmware will fix?
Let me know your experiences!
TLDR: I'm pretty sure I've got a software issue where my i9300 only recognises a USB peripheral/begins USB host mode via OTG if the peripheral is actually draining the phone's power, and so doesn't work when a USB hub or externally powered (y type) OTG cable is being used.
Thank you!

Really? That's odd - is that an android limitation or samsung? Either way it still seems weird that my y cable/hub didn't work for the mouse/keyboard, is that something you'd expect?

Only the provided USB cable work with my PC. Other USB 3.0 cables dont seem to work.

For some reason the provided with cable that came with my Verizon G5 is the only USB cable that seems to work with my computer for file transfers. I've tried other various USB 3.0 cables and occasionally they will work but 9/10 times my computer doesn't recognize the device like it does with the stock cable (which Im assuming is a usb 2.0 cable?) It just makes the pluggin in noise and the device doesn't show up in the windows explorer. Anyone know why? I've rules out the cables being the issue since I've tried like 3 now to the same effect. Thanks.
I just bought one of these that works perfectly:
http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030319&p_id=13011&seq=1&format=2
Though my phone does keep reconnecting at first until I select File Transfer (that option doesn't seem to want to stick and it cycles through at least Charging Only and File Transfer). Not sure why it does that, but I did just confirm that it was working by copying an album over to my SD Card.

Yes it is. But even if it wasn't that shouldn't prevent it from showing up on the computer as a device as far as I know.
anyone determined anything other than whats mentioned? I have this problem as well.
I bought a Logitech cable when I stupidly left my charger plugged into a hotel wall and it works perfectly. I wouldn't rule out there being a problem with the cable itself - I've seen people say some their droid charges slower with a third party cable so there clearly are some differences.

V30 Doesn't Recognize USB stick

I have used a USB stick with many different Samsung phones, and when the USB stick is inserted, a window pops up on the phone, and you can transfer files back and forth.
My friend's V10 works this way.
But on my V20, and now V30, there is no response at all to inserting a USB stick. If I connect The V20 or V30 to a PC with a USB cable, files can be transferred as expected. But inserting a USB stick doesn't work.
I've tried various settings on the phone (multi-media host, etc) and nothing changes it.
Has anyone else tried this? Can you read a USB stick?
Could you try going to Settings>Storage and see if you can see the USB stick there?
Sent from my sailfish using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Thanks for your suggestion. The storage screen shows internal memory and an SD card, but not the USB stick. I posted this same question a year ago about the V20, and didn't get much feedback then, either. Maybe it's not common for people to use a USB stick with their phone.

Mine works. When I put drive in, it asked how I wanted to recognize the usb device (Charge, power supply, media, photos, etc). I kept it on power supply and my drive is mounted and available.
There might be a couple things to look at...
1. Is your dongle/cable data capable? WIth USB C, there are some differences with USB 2/3 and only charge capable.
2, Have you tried messing with the developer settings for USB? You can try to force it to data instead of charge.
What file system is the USB flash memory formatted for?

I use one of these:

and my phone recognizes USB flash drives with no issue.
i have a note 5 and V20 and now the V30 (well i just got rid of the note 5 and v20 but had did testing on both ports previously).
i have a usb to otg cable. i also have a RTL-SDR device. from the play store i downloaded the rtl-sdr driver and sdrtouch app (did this to all my phones).
the rtl-sdr dongle was not recognized on the V30 and i would really love to know how to fix this.
the v20 and note 5 and currently my note 3 all worked with no problem.
i wonder since i now have to use my lg g5 type-c to female micro-usb adapter that it makes it not work correctly?
maybe we need a usb 2 otg cable that has usb type-c on the end?
otg or host mode not working 100%
Hi,
just got my V30 plus H930DS (nice shiny blue actually ) and plugged in a couple of usb flash drives and a multi adapter card reader and nothing.
But... just picked a AUKEY USB 3 to USB-A adapter cable and instantly recognised a 4gb flash drive.
Tried another 16GB flash drive but got a message about needing to fix it. As there was not much on there I said yes, warning that everything will be deleted, then 2 seconds later, message says its ok and now working fine for copy copy/paste.
The flash drive was formatted by the phone to FAT32 (it was ntfs before)
I also tried exFAT formatted from windows and that worked so that would help with >4GB files.
The bottom line is that you need a good make cable which is specifically for USB-3 and either FAT 32 or exFAT. Best bet is to plug in the flash drive and if the phone wants to format it then do it that way.
Just a heads up, i know both the samsung OTG adapter and the pixel 2 OTG adapter work with the v30. I use them myself.

Only the V30+ comes with some goodies, which is the B&O play headphones. I get to unbox all the new phones as part of my job and I end up with adapters from all sorts of devices.
I prefer the Pixel OTG as it works with a case on and seems very durable.
All of my OTG drives, which I used on my HTC M8, work on the V30 also. If it doesn't tell you it's working, go to settings and mount it.

Hi, I have double ended Sandisk flash disks which only work with the AUKEY adapter cable usb a, not with a usb c adapter.
I don't see any where in settings to mount it
Very fussy is this LG
EDIT: have bought some small UGREEN adapters and everything works as expected now.
