[Q] Easiest way to transfer contacts/SMS logs between different ROMs? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

It's been a long time since I've switched ROMs, so I'm looking for the easiest way to get my contacts and text messages back when wiping and flashing a new ROM.
Notes:
-I have TiBu Pro, but I'm not sure that'll help much since I can't restore system data. Does it have any other functions useful for this case that I'm just not aware of?
-I'd prefer not to have to sync my contacts to my Google account (same goes for backing SMS on Gmail), just a preference.
-I'd also prefer not to have to install more than one additional app, and I also would prefer not to have to pay for it. Again, just preferences.
-I've heard of other backup apps, but I don't know details of how they work. Yeah, I'm asking for a little spoonfeeding.
-I'm attempting to switch from ShishirROM ICS to Aberration JB, if that makes a difference.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

You can use TiBu to back up and restore your SMS. Press the backup/restore button and scroll down to Messages entry and hit back up. It backs up as an XML file. Anything yellow in the backup/restore menu can be backed up. I use it for messages, wifi and call log.
I can't answer about your contacts. I let Google restore those.

I can't say if it will work on stock roms but on aosp going to contacts and hitting menu gives you an option to export to storage

Just save your contacts to your sim like old school.

This is the correct answer. I have been doing this since the feature was introduced. Works a peach

Thanks for your help everyone!
I never noticed the "export to storage" button. Maybe I'll try it, hopefully it'll work since both ROMs are Sammy-based :fingers-crossed: Otherwise I'll give into Google syncing lol

Hit the menu button in tibu. Save data to XML

Recently there was an app posted here called super backup. It's free and it works. You can back up apps, contacts, calender, SMS, call logs, and bookmarks separately.

If you have gmail then you contacts can all be stored on there. When you flash and sign in to google your contacts automatically get installed. Its like cloud storage.

[Q] Backing up My Contact Question

Hi GUYS!
I just bought the Thunderbolt, My very first Droid very very happy!
My question is how do i back up my contacts..
I rooted my phone last week, and have installed perfect storm ROM. and backed everything up with Titanium Back up.
However, I realize that every time a new ROM or updated version comes out, I would have to wipe all my data. I only restore User Apps and no the System Data, becomes this is a new rom. Or should i restore all??
So my question is what files do i need to restore from Titanium backup to restore my contacts. because it gets very annoying having to link my contacts between Google email account, and Exchange each time.
**is there a way I can save all the phone contacts i have from exchange, and link that to Google permanently?
So when i updated my Google account, all my number would come out..
or is there a file i can restore through my Ti Backup to save all that hassle, Everytime I wipe.
Thanks Guys!
Your contacts should have sync'd to your online Google account.
That's the beauty of Android. Once everything is sync'd up. You can change phones, log into your google account and just resync all your info immediately.
hey buddy,
how do i sync all my contact to my google account now?

yea importing contacts can be bad if you have google sync on, it will create duplicate contacts if you restore contacts and alot of hassle removing the dupes
If you add your contacts as Google contacts you can edit them/view them online at http://www.google.com/contacts . They will automatically sync up then. Also, there are programs on Market you can get to save the contacts as well. Lastly, with most roms, once you get going with it, you don't *always* have to wipe; oftentimes you can just do it as an upgrade. At least that's what I can tell.

check under accounts and sync and make sure your google sync is on, contacts calendar and mail. when you save contacts on your phone you are given 2 options, phone contact or google contact. always choose google contact if you want them auto synced. Phone contacts wont get backup unless you use Verizon's Backup Assistant or use a 3rd party program like Ti Backup Pro or some other software to do it. Easier to use google contact and forget about it.
I came from a blackberry with Exchange mail.. So all my contacts are actually stored in my exchange mail. So is there a way where I can just sync all my contact information from Exchange mail to Google account.
I hate having to link both google info with my exchange mail info.. A couple of times i don't mind, but if i want to play around and update roms frequently i rather not deal with this type of problem if its avoidable.
Once you are all updated on your Google account, anytime you change roms and you get the "Welcome to Android" startup screen (If you wipe your phone prior to changing roms), once you put in your google ID and password, your phone will "pull" the contact information to your phone from your google account, so you won't need to re-input anything.
Only time you may have an issue is if you had a contact on your phone and for whatever reason you did not sync before wiping, you may lose any added contacts that didn't get sync'd up.
The easiest way I backed up my contacts was just make a vcard back up from the menu in messaging app to your SD card and then restoring it from your SD card when your done flashing. It was very fast and easy for me.

wipe wont wipe your sdcard, unless you physically do so in clockwork recovery.
Sounds like you got everything set up. Congrats on your new phone!
On a side-note. You have an Android, not a Droid. The Droids are a specific set of Verizon Android devices.

Backing up contacts to Google

Hey XDA!
I have a rooted Samung Infuse with AT&T and am currently running ZEUS with few problems. I love this ROM but I am going to switch up and flash a newer ROM within the next few days. However, (back in January) before I got ZEUS, I went from the Stock ROM to MIUI and I used Titanium Backup to transfer all of my data. When I backed up contacts in the Stock ROM through Titanium and tried to restore them once I had MIUI, I kept getting force close messages that made the phone unusable because they were so frequent. I isolated the problem to be related with contacts and just deleted my saved contacts. The problem went away, but I ended up switching to ZEUS later, now with no contacts.
Anyway, I don't know if that was a random occurrence that happened only to me in my flashing process, but to avoid anything like that again, I'd like to be able to backup my contacts to Google. I've seen it mentioned several times here and on Google's site, but never did I find a how to or any sort of procedure. Can someone explain to me (as comprehensively as possible) how to backup my contacts to Google?
Any guidance or redirection would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Actually, you only need to activate the sync option on Settings >Sync (or account settings, I dunno). All your contacts will be uploaded to your GMail account, and downloaded to your phone the next time
You can also make a manual backup, doing this:
Go to Phone >Contacts >press Menu key >Import/export >export contacts to SD. So, when you need your contacts, follow the same procedure, choosing now Import contacts from SD.

Thanks a lot! I tried every manner of playing with the settings possible. I had the account sync multiple times, but none of the contacts actually stored when I checked on a computer. I'm just gonna settle with the backups from Titanium, my SD card, and my Sim. No worries!

How to transfer sms/mms from GB to ICS?

Is there a way to do this? I've tried TiBu to no avail. A bit of a noob when it comes to Android.
*edit* If it is possible to xfer texts from GB to ICS, is it also possible to merge sms/mms that are already on my gs3?
**edit** I tooled around with the AT&T Messages app for a bit and decided it wasn't for me. Is there a way to merge the sms from the AT&T Messages app with the stock messaging app with sms backup?

I've been using SMS Backup+ for quite a long time. I have it set to automatically backup up my SMS, MMS, and Call log every 2 hours to labeled folders in my Gmail account. You can also restore after flashing a new ROM (or getting a new phone), and it'll MERGE instead of overwrite.
New version of titanium backup pro has it now.

Good to know, the google play page for this app says it doesn't restore MMS.
"Automatically backup SMS, MMS and call log entries using a separate label in Gmail / Google Calendar. It is also possible to restore SMS and call log entries back to the phone (MMS not supported yet)."
So I've always stayed away from it.

True, it still doesn't restore MMS, but I almost never view old MMS pics on my phone. If you really need to, though, you can always view them in your gmail account instead.
Thanks for the replies fellas. I guess there is no straight solution to transfer sms and mms from GB to ICS.
I remember gosms had this really cool backup and restore feature from sd card back when i used to use it, maybe give that a shot? :good:
Zmore is the man. Worked like a charm. Hopefully SMS Backup + adds MMS support soon.

Installed Hyperdrive, Lost Contacts

Hey guys, just installed the latest version of hyperdrive for NC5 builds on my verizon galaxy s4 using safestrap. All is well except for my contacts. I only have about 5 of them still remaining...When I was stock, I had contacts backed up to verizon backup assistant, as well as both of my gmail accounts. I've setup my gmail accounts and attempted to sync contacts with no luck. I also went to gmail on my desktop and attempted to restore contacts from an earlier date, but the same 5 or so contacts pop up. I should also add that I did quite a bit of searching and tried several methods but with no success.
I feel like there has to be something obvious I'm missing here, but I'm pretty sure I've checked all the basics. I'd rather just restore my contacts rather than restore my phone and attempt the whole thing again.
Appreciate the help!!
The same thing happened to me. I believe I ended up getting them back by logging on to my Samsung account.

Tried my samsung account as well and with no luck. I was really surprised my google account didn't do the trick. It's always worked in the past when switching devices.
I restored my stock rom, got my contacts back, then exported them all to my external sd card. Probably gonna give hyperdrive another go and hopefully can import them from there. I'll post back with results!! Hyperdrive seems super awesome btw...
I'm thinking some contact file needs to be deleted somewhere that's over writing my google contacts or something...no clue. If anyone knows why my google backup isn't working the way it should share your thoughts!

Super Backup from the Play Store. Backup contacts, call logs, sms conversations, calendar info; all to a zip you can save to your external sd card and email to yourself or keep on cloud storage as well.
Cool, I'll give that a try. Thanks!
Success! As long as your contacts are somewhere on your external sd card you'll be good to go. Exporting from contacts or using super backup both work well. Still not sure why my google account didn't get them in there though.
Thanks again for the help! Loving Hyperdrive

Help with Saving Contacts?...

Does anyone else have a problem using the G3 and saving contacts? I have a Bumbped Verizon G3, and my Girlfriend has the T-Mobile G3, but BOTH of us are unable to SAVE new contacts. I have ben usuing/Flashing android since the OG Droid and have never had a problem with my google account, but it just strikes me odd as we've never had problems until we've been using the G Series phones.
Does anybody else have this problem? Any Ideas?
I'm Running Skydragon Also. I like to stay as close to stock as possible.
Are you checking to see if the number is being saved to the phone or your google account.

the google.
when I first add a contact it'll bring up which account i'd like to save it to and I make sure its my gmail, then I go to my actual gmail in my settings and sync everything about a good ten thousand times, and once I flash a new rom it's all gone again.

I would suggest you make sure you have all the contacts you want on your device, then log in on google contacts from your PC and erase everything and re-sync your phone. I had to do this before my contacts would stick or stop duplicating themselves when I first got this phone.
I always save the contacts to the sd card. And restore from the sd card.
