[Q] Unlocked Bootloader? - Motorola Photon 4G

Caveat Emptor: I did use the search feature and did some reading, but still am confused.
I have a Sprint Motorola Photon 4G, still running 2.3.4.
To date, it is my understanding that unlocking my bootloader still kills Wimax 4G. From what I've found, all barriers seem to exist with devices running 2.3.5.
I'm still running 2.3.4. Would I still lose Wimax 4G if I unlock my bootloader?
Would it be possible to unlock my bootloader, flash a ROM, then relock my bootloader and keep 4G?
(I may have asked this awhile back somewhere, but I used to work overnights and memory gets fuzzy of online activities from that time)

Unlocking kills wimax. To keep 4g, you'd need to keep a rom based on stock with a stock kernel with a locked bootloader. Even then there are instances that'll kill wimax, like flashing a bootstrapped rom while staying locked. Bottom line is don't unlock bootloader if you want to keep wimax.

Unlocked boot loaders are not illegal. Changing carriers by unlocking the programming its illegal. Such as AT&T changed to T-Mobile.

Please modify this post. This is utterly untrue. Having information like this out there just spreads fear, should some unknowing individual come and read it and get the wrong impression.

Well, legal or illegal, Motorola appears to have made any discussion of criminal law a moot (sp?) point.
I need wimax and Moto says if I want to unlock any bootloaders I can haz no 4g, so no unlocking to be done. Thanks for simplifying this!

Unlocking the bootloader is not illegal. Unlocking the carrier lock without the carrier's permission is, but only on subsidized phones sold after 1/26/2013.

Why were they able to root and unlock the thunderbolt boot loader so fast?

Why were they able to root and unlock the boot loader and everything else on the thunderbolt so quickly but yet no one can do it on the atrix?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Sorry, I don't know.
Because it's not locked or signed?
There's seems to be some discussion regarding it being locked or not. Engadget wrote an article about it being locked but there are a lot of comments from readers with evidence to the contrary.
With it being broken so fast, I believe it wasn't locked or signed.
Um. The phone is not unlocked. In fact the devs were in for a surprise to see the phone has signed bootloader. Signed karnel. Everything is sihned. Which is a furst for htc phone . The only thing they managed to do is root it. And they already did with the atrix. Once you have a signed bootloader and karnel. There is not much you can do.
The article was posted new today or yesterday at engadget. And nothing happened since then.
Its safe to assume all companies right now will use a locked bootloader and karnel. They dont want you to keep your phone. They want you to update.
So basically unless an employee leaks the codes we are s o l.that really sux.

Android police is reporting that the Bootloader has been unlocked.

Exactly and since the bootloader will never be unlocked on the Atrix then its going back next week. Suck it moto!
Right. So like I asked earlier, why were they able to unlock that one and not ours?

Yea I'm in the same boat, I might just go back to my captivate in the next week. I really like this phone but I don't feel like much progress is being made. I know there are a few busting ass trying to crack this thing but that doesn't necessaraly mean theyre making progress. Although they did get a copy of that unlocked/deencrypted phone from ken so maybe we'll see something soon.

most android hackers are on verizon, because they went in with android first. the least amount of android hackers are on at&t. also, they had better resources, they were leaked a beta bootloader that was unlocked, and also a previous ruu image (like sbf but for htc)

I don't know the true reason, but historically, HTC phones are more "open" and "hackable" than Motorola phones (excluding the original Droid). It's just a different company policy more than likely. Is this policy different with the Thunderbolt? I'm not sure...
there is a definitive difference between 'Locked' and 'Encrypted'

Verizon Bootloader

I am about to upgrade my phone, and Im eyeing the Play, however, will the bootloader be unlockable(or bypassable) on the Verizon variant? Since I got a DROID2, that's a must have feature. Any help would be thanked greatly.

Unlock is not possible yet on CDMA Xperia phones. It's currently being investigated, and hopefully solution will come soon
Well, is root and flashing roms similarly to the Droid2/X/X2 possible?
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA Premium App
Nothing of the sort is possible but everything is being worked on.. We are all waiting.
Yes. Its possible. The difference will just be whether we find people willing to do the work. If all dev work stopped now, the process would go like this: wait for new root exploit, root phone, use second init process to boot cm7.... Just like the d2 and dx

People are trying to work on getting the bootloader unlocked, despite SonyEricsson not willing to give any help to the CDMA variant folks (R800x). The document you pointed gives pretty much the universal variant of how to unlock and root for all of the R800 series _EXCEPT R800x_ (which is what Verizon carries). Since you can't unlock the bootloader, you can't currently flash a new/different ROM.
So for now, people are working on it, albeit slowly. Don't expect a unlock/root method in the next day, but it will happen eventually. I know I'm eagerly awaiting it.
I'll work on that too when I get the phone.
I believe Verizon's phones aren't unlockable because Verizon wants total SW control over device.
I'm patiently waiting as well.

We are all keeping it a secret and not posting about it.
Lol, just curious if any devs have news about this, like if it is still in the works, and possibly done, just not posted yet.
I'm with deeds on this one. With all of the recent updates and new kernels and whatnot, its hard to decipher exactly where we stand with this phone, as far as progress. A quick recap of whats been happening would be great.
I love your screen name, it is so awesome, lol.

Update, its not fixed yet. Limited time plus lack of help= slow progress. However by unlocking you can have cm7, miui(oops secrets out), oc kernels, and other awesomeness. Imagine 60% increase in speed while increasing battery life massively. Thats how we mophos roll.

Same here, no ROM on my phone until there's an unlocked bootloader from Motorola/Sprint that keeps 4G. For now, its just a rooted phone with ADW launcher.

I have the photon with an unlocked bootlaoder, I had it rooted but for some reason couldn't flash cwm. So I tried unrooting and returning back to stock following qbking77s how to video. But it told me process failed and phone would just stick at motorola dual core screen. So I reflashed the unlocked version I had and can't undo it! Please help.

I suggest that you start your own thread, (I don't have an issue with you posting about this here), but you'd get more responses for help if you post in a new thread. The only people that will read this are the few with bootloader news, like I said, the few. But, if you ask for help in a new thread, chances are, you'll find what you're looking for. Good luck!
You can unlock your bootloader, flash cm7 (or your rom of choice), and relock your bootloader, and then voila.
CM7 with 4g.
But dont use those as exact intructions LOL.
Theyre are threads about it. Look in the dev section.
You might want to try that out before you suggest it.

I was actually going to post my own thread for devs to give 4g updates hehe
I really appreciate what you devs are doing! Ill always be open to help if you need any, im not a developer but interested in learning and am pretty damn good at the basics of rooting/build.prop recovery etc..
One question (even though i should prob make my own thread im not in a hurry to get the answer plus its half the same subject) i have the cmw RECOVERY, ive been out of town and since im normally in kansas city (sprints headquarters, so perfect 4g everywhere) i just wanted to check, if i have cmw RECOVERY does this mean ive lost 4g?

Got photon replaced!!!

Well, i got my photon fixed, and here's the kicker, the new one has 2.3.4 on it, and i know now to not accept the update, so what should i do guys? i'm already in the samsung family with my note 2, but i still have appreciation for my photon, so any suggestions for 2.3.4?
Root, unlock, find your choice of JB ROM.

i checked it out and the other threads and i just tried for an hour or so, keeps failing in RSD and just won't unlock, so unless i'm doing something wrong, i think i can honestly give up here?
RSD always fails. Try looking through the big fancy Compendium at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393519
Unlock isn't hard, but unlock and still keeping the WiMax is still impossible. If you don't care about WiMax then just use the Note II domestically and flash ICS/JB rom on the Photon for international use.

I understand this, there's lte in my area so wimax isn't a breaker for me (plus the fact that I have 3 other 4g phones) but that's the thing, it really isn't that hard, I'm just running into a brick wall with the failing and I can't get it to work and can't find any info on anything, I'd really like to get my photon on at&t to be honest, but can't get this working :/

did some more tinkering, got everything unlocked and working, now my photon is on at&t, and all is good, screw moto for saying these phones won't run JB!

[Q] Can the DNA be rooted without being unlocked?

Is rooting completely out now, even thought the boot loader is locked? Specifically, on other phones I've seen instances where a phone could be rooted even without being unlocked. Is that possible on the DNA now, after the update?
Thanks!

That's not a bad idea... No where does it make it real clear if its just unlocking the BL or rooting too. Especially since a lot locked BL phones can be. A lot of people don't give a crap about unlocking only rooting.

Lol I understand. Really unless someone leaks an unlocked bootloader I don't see it happening quickly. With that said how impossible will kexec be lol. We got an unlocked bootloader on the gs3 thanks to a leak. The s3 had quite a few devs working on the bootloader when lucked up on the leak. It's just more realistic to use kexec for a software solution. JTAG sounds great but I don't see it being super popular.

Technically yes. But without the unlocked bootloader and direct write access to a partition (forget which...) it's only temporary and utterly pointless for what a user would need.

It worked on the gs3 with locked bootloader. It wasn't temp. I believe it is possible. Basically you boot into a second unsecure system after booting into the stock secure system.
