Custom modems - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Hey guys I'm pretty new and I'm sorry if this question is super noobish but I've just starting reading threads about custom modems and I was wondering what would be the benefit of a modem change?

Possibly better signal and battery life, but it could also make it worst. Best bet is to try the new one and see if it helps if not just go back to the old one. Or if you're signal is great then just stay where you are at.

I would have to agree with kintwofan, I have seen more bad than good come from swapping the modem. A friend of mine thought it might be a good idea to swap the modem on the phone and to say the least he spent the better part of an hour restoring and re-rooting his phone. As the person above had mentioned I would just stick with what you’re working with assuming its not causing you any issues. Take some time to familiarize yourself with everything before you just try to jump in and customize everything on your phone. You will save yourself a lot of heartache.

Why would he reroot after changing a modem? All you have to do is flash the old modern. It's very easy to swap between the two

He tried to flash the old modem and still was having issues getting any service/radio, so he revert back to the stock rom and re rooted the phone had no issues.

I don't know about the note II but with the galaxy s2 different modems worked better in certain areas of the US. You had to flash several modems and test to see which one gave you the best data speeds.

Gotcha, kind of strange usually you can just flash back to your old modem, but that's the risk of this game we play

We have 2 modems, and from everything I've read, no one has seen any real difference between the two. Given the patch size, I can't imagine it was more than just a little fine tuning and a version change.

Thanks guys. Good to know.

[Q] Does flashing back to stock affect T-mobile modem?

I've flashed a T-mobile modem and using with the HSPA+ for awhile, however the Saurom ROM I'm using has some bugs like I can't reboot my phone properly and I sometimes lost signals, so my question is: if I want to flash my Note back to stock android, am I gonna lose the capability of using the HSPA+ which I'm using right now? Is there any ROM you would recommend that would be stable for the Note and still have the T-mobile modem enabled? Please give me an answer because I've been confused with this for awhile. God bless you all...
Question
Anybody? Please?
I'm using Saurom 7.1 and ICS theme on,Blaze modem and its been running great. It isn't as fast speedwise compared to my Amaze 4g but stable and fast.

You will probably have to reflash the tmo modem. But it might still be there as others have had non-stock modems that were still there even after flashing a stock tar file.

Best way to be sure would be to flash the stock radio. Though, it would be nice to know if using Odin will put EVERYTHING back to stock.
I'll bet the answer exists on the forum already but it's a good question, regardless.

Oops. Read the question wrong. So far as i know, once you flash a radio, it's there forever. Unless you flash a new one. Depending on how someone makes their ROM, this could change, but I'm betting that most of the devs aren't worried about forcibly making the people flashing their **** switch modems.

thanks for sharing. I've heard some infos about flashing back to stock could affect the radio, but I feel relieved when I saw this.
Dont worry about the modem in GB just flash it and it'll work
all ive heard is that the "ICS leak" doesnt play well with TMO modem
but idk to be honest

If you were me.....

If you were me, what would you do in this situation? I had to get a replacement Note 2 and the replacement thankfully came with the VRALJB software installed. I deferred the update to L4 for 5 days.
Would you just root and unlock the bootloader now the easy way, or take the L4 update and do it the harder way? Would either way be beneficial or does it not really matter?
Thanks!
Go ahead and unlock/root. You don't have to do anything further if you don't want to and you never know how difficult it would be to unlock in the future.
When I purchased mine outright it had the older software. I used the jailbreak method and that worked like a charm.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda app-developers app
Either way. Just do it on the current software and save a step. Same end result.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
As others said doesn't matter. Once you flash aROM you could just flash the LL4 radio and it would be the same as the OTA.
So I guess Odin didn't fix your last one?

mine came with the ota last Saturday night, i waited til Monday to root just because I've always had htc phones, had to get familiar with touchwiz. took me 10mins to root after i couldn't take all the bloatware anymore

Good idea. I thought with that failure it went black with no signs of life, but haven't read up on it. It was a strange that Odin of stock didn't fix it for him.... That's usually a guarantee unbrick

Yup, I had the S3 for a while and was over there. Yeah man, I was chatting to the developer of the Jedi ROM and I sent him the meta folder of the ROM that I flashed for beta testing and he saw some problems. He said it was touching some partitions that it shouldn't be touching.
Anyhow, I guess I learned the hard way to be careful of testing ROMs from devs that I don't really recognize.
Time to root this bad boy and get back in business lol.

Note 2 newb just unlocked

Hi guys, I am very new to the Note 2. I just unlocked and rooted the latest ota using Casual. Thanks to Adam Outler and everyone else involved. So my question is which ROMs are compatible with this ota? Basic question I'm sure. I came from the Razr and the kernel had to match so I assume its the same here? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

Thanks for the info. Exactly the answers and info I was looking for. I just flashed CleanROM and went through the flashing process. When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

Thats not a normal thing to happen, but it does happen occasionally. As long as it boots up after the battery pull I wouldnt be too worried by it. I have had it happen to me before and after the battery pull I experienced no issues whatsoever.

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

Hi all, I'm feeling like a n00b on the Note too, and really appreciate the help all of you seem to be willing to share with each other. I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.
I'm looking forward to being part of this community and wanted to say hello.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

There's lots of GPS fixes for every ROM, I had the same problems you did, used google, got it working. You can search the individual threads as well. There's so many different fixes for everybody you got to try them out and see what works for you.

You really shouldn't be having any problems on CleanROM it's very very similar to stock. Whatever ROM you're on, you should post your problems in that thread plus search that thread. It's the only way you'll get somebody that can actually help you.

In my experience, clean rom always fixes issues I have. If a vzw version of clean rom doesn't properly work on your phone, you might have a faulty device. Because that guy's roms are money.

I have no issues with any Verizon based roms such as Clean or Beans, but any ported or intnl rom I cannot get the GPS to come on or get a fix. I have tried every fix that I can find applicable to Note 2 and even some s3 on every forum that has come up in searches. Would love to use Novella, but still looking for a fix that will make this dang Verizon Note 2 work. Tried different firmware/basebands, replacing or adding the proper libs, getting a fix on a different rom then flashing, GPS fix trick with restore, still no dice. I am still looking for something that will work. Even tried the "press upper right corner thing" and tighten screws. And combinations of all those things. I know its not a GPS problem with hardware as it works on every Verizon based rom. Good luck...I am still looking.

Hmm I got nothing then. International roms don't like my phone, but If I have a lock on a Verizon rom before flashing I always get a lock on international based roms thereafter.

I have the same problem with the latest Jedi X17, I can get a lock before the flash, boot into recovery, do my wipes and flash only to have an AWESOME rom without the 1 capability i use most with my device. The Rom has a GPS quick-fix, that doesn't work for my device, and I've tried several from the market. It's infuriating...
Gonna try clean rom again in the next day or 2. Question when installing rom people say to wait 10 mins then reboot.do you let it sit right after flasing or after you put in Google acount etc?

let it sit for a minute or two after youve gone through the aroma installer. and it gives the green button to reboot. no need to wait ten mins but i have locked my phone up a few times flying through install and rebooting right away. if it happens though just pull your battery and pop it right back in and itll boot back to recovery. then i always flash again

Modems/Radios for this phone

Hi, I'm a bit confused when it comes to modems/radios. I currently am on i717UCMD3, and it runs pretty great on T-Mobile. But I want to find another modem to see if it's any better when it comes to reception. However, I can't find any other modems that are for jellybean. I was wondering if anyone had links or anything to other modems?
Thanks!

As long as its a modem for this device, you can flash away. Take em all for a test drive. Just flash modems, no need to reflash rom with them.

I am on At&T and have never had an issue with whatever modem comes with the rom. Then again, I treat the modem like I do the kernal. It should work with whatever comes with the rom. If it doesnt, for the most part, I wont run it. Right now I am running Hellybean. I was one of the first to try for our device. Lots of options and doesnt suck battery like the KK's.
