Phone got extremely hot last night - AT&T LG Optimus G

So the past couple of nights I have been using sleep as android to track my sleep patterns. Worked well every night until last. I waited for the screen to turn off than put half the phone under my pillow to keep it from falling off the bed. This morning I went to go turn off the App and my phone was burning hot. It was showing a black screen. I could not even hold the phone in my hand it was so hot. I have auto screen off enabled for 1 minute.
I waited about 20 mins and the phone finally booted up., it would just display the LG logo real quick and sit at black screen Untill it cooled off.
My questions are is this because it was under my pillow charging? I know this phone has a temp sensor, but can't find a temp sensor that work's. I know this because if I have the screen at full brightness after a while playing a game the screen will dim, ill go into settings and try to bump it up and it says temp to high please try again later. So I know this phone has some sort of safe guards. How come my phone was burning hot, shouldn't it have turned itself off. Also can this happen even not being under my pillow? Im nervous about leaving my phone chargeing when I sleep for fear its going to burst into flames lol.
Just curious if anyone has ever had this phone get so hot you could not hold it? Phone seems to be working fine, is there away to make sure this phone never gets that hot again?

Best guess is, yes. Don't put your phone under your pillow. The beat has nowhere to go basically it just keeps around the phone.
The N4 has been known to shut itself off for a few minutes after overheating/extremely dead battery.

I was curious about this issue myself and I've done research about this to avail.I just got the phone yesterday and It burns up even with power saver and eco mode turned on or off.I can imagine what will happen with a case on the phone will it over heat.we need a solution

Check your battery, it may be three cause for this problem. The battery is what heats up the phone the most, if it is leaking, or damaged in any way then it can cause this
Also try cleaning any vents on your phone, they may be clogged, not allowing dissipation of heat
Alternatively, check which kernel and cpu governor you are using, if it is terribly inefficient it can be causing the cpu to stay at high frequencies, which can cause it to increase its TDP footprint

If I helped you, please hit the thanks button!

How would I check my battery on the og since it's internal. Vents were probably blocked since it was under a pillow. Phone is brand new running nocturnal and sk8ters kernel with set cpu governor on on-demand.

I have to be honest with you guys. The only time my phone gets hot is when I play intense games or download a 200+ MB file. Other than that it's always cool, and I'm using a case.
Don't leave your phone under a pillow, turn it off when you can, try and use darker colors/lower the screen brightness as much as possible, and give it a break every so often...

This was the first time it ever got hot. I found a battery temp meter, mine phone gets warm a lot, right now my brightness is at one, set cpu gov is Powersave I have been browsing the net and fb for a half hour, my phone is warm on the upper back half, battery temp is 89.1 f so I dunno like I said it freaked me out, first time it ever got hot in the week I owned it. But it does get warm which is prob normal with all its power and no fans.

You could check the battery by sending it to lg, or check for any sort of liquid seeping from the phone. As for the governor, try setting it to a more conservative setting, on demand can result in it pulling max resources all the time and this can cause the heating. Apart from that, don't keep it under a pillow, in a leather case, or in tight jeans. Keeping it in the sun in a car can also be problematic

Mine got super hot when I first got it. It would do it randomly on occasion, but normally in recovery, however over time (and after flashing updated recoveries) I've been noticing less and less of a problem. Using sk8's kernel also seemed to help.

I had this with my old phone too, because it went under my pillow.
That is terrible for a phone.
Put it on a bedside table if you have one.

if you had an app running, that's probably your problem.

Mine got super hot the other day playing ingress for hours straight xD
It did kinda scare me at first though I'd never felt the phone get that hot before. (hot enough to feel it through the case I have)

My phone gets really hot when I'm in recovery mode, making a backup. I connected my Optimus G to my TV via HDMI and played some Super Hexagon (and before that watching TV show on Netflix). Phone got really hot, then shut off :\

Just tried playing Iruna online. Phone got so hot that even though it was on the charged it lost 6% in 10 minutes.

Have had same problem w- sleep as android app also
At first I thought it was from being under the pillow as well. So I made sure not to put it there the next night, but had it on the bed. It still got pretty hot, just not as hot.
Next, I let the app run all night next to me on the nightstand and it still got pretty warm, but then you don't reliable stats. I then made sure the app was off for a couple of nights and the phone was at a normal temp in the mornings.
There is definitely something different with my phone when running this particular app.

Got my S3 replaced and this one gets hot at the bottom all the time...

I'm wondering if I have ANOTHER bad S3. First one never heated up at the bottom but had a bad volume rocker that didn't work. Got it replaced and now this one always gets hot at the bottom. My usage hasn't changed... I'm wondering, is this normal.

I just got my phone yesterday so I haven't really had time to use it. However, when I was downloading all of my apps from the Play Store, I did think it was very hot on the bottom half of the back.
That being said, I'm going to go to the store tonight to get my phone replaced due to loose/clicky home button.
Mine only gets hot at the bottom when playing intensive games like Dead Trigger on max, which seems normal. If it is getting hot all the time on normal use that doesn't seem very normal.
Mine gets hot at the bottom with normal use. :-(
warm at the bottom with normal use. nature of the beast. slim, high powered phone, its gonna get hot
Mine gets warm sometimes on its own with the screen off and everything just sitting in my pocket. Without playing very graphically intensive games though, it won't get what I consider hot. At least coming from my old DINC.

Things like this are a big reason why I'm very hesitant to exchange my phone even though it has problems. You might always end up with one that has worse problems than the first one you had.

yeah mine gets slightly warm at bottom under light to moderate use. doesnt really bother me at all.
It's a powerhouse phone that's so slim of course you're going to feel the heat. If anyone thinks they have a problem with their phone download "Cool Tools" and you can check the temperature live.
I know during easy use like sending a text the phone is cool.
Moderate use like surfing the web or watching a video the bottom half gets warm.
Heavy use such as playing Dead Trigger or Nova will cause it to get hot. But just like any electronic device the more use the hotter the temp. Sadly phones unlike desktop PC's don't have cooling fans.
WARM/HOT IS OKAY! STOP FREAKING OUT PEOPLE!
Mine has only ever gotten slightly warm at the bottom, and never hot or noticable. That was while constantly dropping in/out of service and heavy usage. Other than that it has been very cool, even when charging.
Also those with a case will feel the heat differently as well.. If you have a case you're less likely to notice the heat.
Those without a case will feel the effect more.
Either way too many of you freak out over nothing.
I think this is funny because when the new ipad came out (which i love btw) everyone was writing articles left and right all over the internet about it getting hot.
It's normal for it to get warm/slightly hot especially when using it while it's charging. But really anything after a few minutes of use will make it begin to warm up. Then toss in videos or games and it will warm up some more. As phones get more powerful and thinner the more we will feel the heat. I mean these are miniature computers but unlike laptops or desktops they don't have the luxury of a fan and ventilation system. The heat has to go somewhere right? Every dual core phone i've used gets warm. My Sensation actually gets extremely hot (HTC said it was normal), and my Bionic gets pretty darn hot too.
I returned mine because it was getting extremely hot after only 5 mins of lite web browsing. Back to my S2 or Gnex I guess.
I hear what you guys are saying, but my first one didn't get warm. I don't do any intense gaming or watch videos. I use the Facebook app, instagram, I text and make a few phone calls. The second one gets warm and the first one disnt... Same usage

Got mine yesterday, noticed that it also gets warm on the bottom.
Have one of those belkin cases that covers the rim but leaves the back exposed, so I definitively notice it.
However, as some have said, wouldn't worry to much about it.
OP, do you have the exact same settings as in your old one? Mainly motion actions, Svoice listening for wakeup command all the time, etc?

What caused this crazy overheating?

This morning I went back to bed after dropping my g/f at school... I let my phone charge and I awoke to it almost burning to the touch. There was some message on the screen but I was half asleep so I don't remember what it said. I think it was something about unplugging the phone.
I checked battery use in the menu and screen was 79% or something around there. Everything else was just 2-3%. The screen was at the lowest brightness setting. This morning the phone was at 70% and when I woke up ~3-4 hours later it was at 80%.
I'm running Shostock 6.2 (ICS 4.0.4, I believe it uses the most recent Siyah kernel) and also flashed the JB 4.2 keyboard, camera, gmail and Google Now. My phone has the stock battery, a rubber case on it, and it was on the bed. I turned the phone off, removed the case and back but let the battery stay in. After about 5 minutes and it had cooled I turned it back on. It's running completely fine and charging now as well.
This was pretty startling and makes me worry about leaving it overnight again to wake up finding the phone fried.
Any idea as to what went wrong? Was it some sort of ventilation problem? My gf and I have both charged our phones on the bed and never had them overheat like this.

I doubt it. If your phone is sleeping, there's no way it could over-heat (even if you have it squeezed under your pillow or something) unless the cpu is running at full speed (which is what happens when media scanner is running). If you're really paranoid and having this issue repeatedly, and it is indeed the media scanner, remove your sd card for a night and see if it stops over-heating. But really, your phone should still feel hot even when its not charging if the media scanner is constantly running and you're not doing anything with the phone.
OK thanks for the info. I will keep an eye on it. Is there the chance that some program is downloading authorized data to my phone?
I'm also recalibrating my battery tonight.
Sent from my SGH-I777
Battery is recalibrated by itself when you fully charge and almost fully discharge several times. The rest is a myth.
I fully charged it and drained it completely then let it charge back up. I think when I flashed the rom I was at 94%.

Overheating then Brick

Today my stock phone with JB overheated. I got a message on the screen that said the phone was shutting down for my protection. I was in the process of installing apps from the Play store. Six hours later it will still not turn back on. My battery was around 25% or so.
If it is not plugged in then no combination of button presses will produce any result.
If it is plugged in then it boots to the first logo flash and then reboots.
If it is plugged in and I boot to download mode then it flashes the download mode screen and reboots.
If it is plugged in and I hold down the power button then the power button flashes rapidly.
I left off for a couple hours and then plugged it in for a couple hours just in case it did need to charge, but it did not produce any change in results.
I am fairly certain that the fix described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2039707 will work. I can also just return my phone since it is only one day old.
However it looks like there might be a fair number of people having this issue so I would like to look into preventative measures so that it does not have to happen. Other than not using the phone if it starts to get hot, does anyone have any ideas of where to check? Are there any files that can be changed to help the phone not get stuck in the pre-boot phase? I know we can change the temp that the phone shuts down at, but given that my phone actually was pretty hot I doubt that is a good solution.
Get a new phone and immediately turn on eco mode. My phone has never gotten hot during heavy usage and you won't notice any difference performance wise. You may notice better battery life, although, I haven't seen much improvement.

That is what I did with my first phone (I have two). I didn't on this phone because I wanted to see if there was any performance difference I could notice. It didn't seem any faster, but I only got to use it about 45 minutes before it overheated.
I will most likely return it, but I really do want to see what I can do to help out the people that won't have that option. I like fixing things so it is a hard choice.

This one. I sat and stared at my screen for 15 minutes trying to decide the best and shortest way to word that. I guess I failed.
I ended up returning my phone. I turned on Eco mode as soon as I could as was suggested. I noticed my phone was starting to get just as hot as before so I double checked and Eco mode had turned off. I am keeping an eye on it, but I have still had it get pretty hot a couple times. Mostly when I am downloading a lot and have the screen on. I'm staying safe by not using it for long periods of time, but that is going to get old pretty quick )= If it is a bad batch thing I suppose it would make sense that this one is bad too since I got it from the same store just two days apart.
I scared to see what is going to happen when I use LTE for the first time tomorrow lol.

I posted a mod in the dev section that should resolve this issue. Just choose optimized stock for a regular experience that'll appropriately throttle to maintain a reasonable temp.

[Q] Anyone want to take a stab at explaining what happened to my OG?

Ok so basically heres what happened. I download the app sleepybot onto my phone. (Can't link I'm new, its called sleepybot)
Last night I turn it on, it dims the screen down super low, I tell it to wake me up between 7:30 and 8:30, put it under my pillow charging and go to sleep. This morning I wake up, go to check the time and almost burn my hand because my OG is F'CKING HOT! I'm not exaggerating, it was hot on every surface to the point where I had to play hot potato with it, no joke. I'm drinking hot coffee while writing this, and it was as hot as the cup I'm holding, front and back as well as all four sides. HOT. I immediately unplugged it and tried to slowly cool it down by blowing on it (I didn't want to cool it to fast and crack the glass). After about ten minutes, I start trying to turn it on. -LG Logo, followed by black screen-. Over the course of the next hour I plug it in, put it on top of a fan to keep it cool, and try and let it charge up. Nothing but the LG Logo then black. No fastboot, recovery, or anything, but download mode still works.
So I go online and start messing around reading, notice that it seems like I've got a softbrick on my hands. Download that EZBin software with the LG stuff, put it into download, and after failing with the first EZBin I successfully booted straight back into my normal software using the EZBin(ALT). Phone is currently charging, running completely normally, and most importantly no longer going super nova.
Everything seems back to normal which I'm happy about, just curious if anyone knows A- Why my phone overheated to such a degree (Like seriously it was I'd guess around 180F) and B- Why my phone essentially soft bricked itself afterwards. I'm on stock ATT JB, rooted with a custom kernel, OC'ed to 1.7Ghz but UV'ed and its not on the performance governor so it downclocks down to 192Mhz.
TLDR: Leave phone charging overnight, wake up with it ridiculously hot and soft bricked. Use awesome LG Dev software to unbrick it. Confused as to wtf happened.

Wild ass guess. Some app kept the device wake locked at max clock. Max clock plus charging plus no air flow under pillow (best way to kill a phone is charging it under your pillow... Don't do it) = pocket inferno. Wouldn't boot due to over-temp protection working...

I angled a fan upwards and let the OG sit on it for about half an hour. It was cool to touch, not the slightest bit warm. I can see the overheat protection keeping it from booting, but it stayed 'soft bricked' for about an hour and a half after the incident, well over an hour after it had cooled. I'm sure I won't get a concrete answer which is fine, I was just curious to see if anybody knew more or had had something similar happen.
Which kernel are you running?
My phone gets warm while charging. If you were in fact charging it under a pillow, then it would cook the phone as mentioned above. Once the temp hits a certain point, the CPU will crash, causing a reboot, or sleep of death. Its not impossible that the CPU crash corrupted vital data, or a partition table. I'd say that's most likely what happened.

LG G3 Getting wayyyyy too hot

I stopped by the Verizon store today to get my girlfriend a g3. Since I first powered it on, anything I do on it even reading news articles, the phone heats up super fast like 103 degrees. Then if I play a game forget it I'm up to 110 in no time. Is this just the way the phone is? If so I'm very disappointed as we both sold our phones to buy this.
No that's not normal. Bring it back and get it replaced.
Edit: I was thinking centigrade for some reason. 100F is completely normal for a cpu temp.

I believe it is the battery I'm getting there Temps from gsam and trust me when I say it's uncomfortably hot especially for how little the the phone is doing. Also did a factory reset. Was blazing hot right after I finished the setup.
That and the fact that it takes like 4 hours to fully charge
Mine got extremely hot at best buy while it was being set up.
After I rooted it and got rid of the bloat along with hibernating everything I could the phone has not been hot like that again.
These things always can run a little hot and it can get alarming at times but usually it's normal.
Obviously it's not normal though if the phone isn't actually " working " and it's red hot. Then you need to chase down wake locks and everything else...
