Overheating then Brick - AT&T LG Optimus G

Today my stock phone with JB overheated. I got a message on the screen that said the phone was shutting down for my protection. I was in the process of installing apps from the Play store. Six hours later it will still not turn back on. My battery was around 25% or so.
If it is not plugged in then no combination of button presses will produce any result.
If it is plugged in then it boots to the first logo flash and then reboots.
If it is plugged in and I boot to download mode then it flashes the download mode screen and reboots.
If it is plugged in and I hold down the power button then the power button flashes rapidly.
I left off for a couple hours and then plugged it in for a couple hours just in case it did need to charge, but it did not produce any change in results.
I am fairly certain that the fix described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2039707 will work. I can also just return my phone since it is only one day old.
However it looks like there might be a fair number of people having this issue so I would like to look into preventative measures so that it does not have to happen. Other than not using the phone if it starts to get hot, does anyone have any ideas of where to check? Are there any files that can be changed to help the phone not get stuck in the pre-boot phase? I know we can change the temp that the phone shuts down at, but given that my phone actually was pretty hot I doubt that is a good solution.

Get a new phone and immediately turn on eco mode. My phone has never gotten hot during heavy usage and you won't notice any difference performance wise. You may notice better battery life, although, I haven't seen much improvement.

That is what I did with my first phone (I have two). I didn't on this phone because I wanted to see if there was any performance difference I could notice. It didn't seem any faster, but I only got to use it about 45 minutes before it overheated.
I will most likely return it, but I really do want to see what I can do to help out the people that won't have that option. I like fixing things so it is a hard choice.

That's not good to hear. Hopefully you just got a bad batch and it won't affect too many people. Makes me kinda worry but luckily mine has never gotten that hot or too hot, like i heard around here.

I'm assuming by "stock with jellybean" he means no N4 conversion was done on that device

This one. I sat and stared at my screen for 15 minutes trying to decide the best and shortest way to word that. I guess I failed.
I ended up returning my phone. I turned on Eco mode as soon as I could as was suggested. I noticed my phone was starting to get just as hot as before so I double checked and Eco mode had turned off. I am keeping an eye on it, but I have still had it get pretty hot a couple times. Mostly when I am downloading a lot and have the screen on. I'm staying safe by not using it for long periods of time, but that is going to get old pretty quick )= If it is a bad batch thing I suppose it would make sense that this one is bad too since I got it from the same store just two days apart.
I scared to see what is going to happen when I use LTE for the first time tomorrow lol.

My first LGOG did this. Within a week of purchase.

How hot are we talking here for it to over heat. I've been up to 71°c on the CPU and 46°c on the battery. It felt really hot to the touch. But it continued to work.

I posted a mod in the dev section that should resolve this issue. Just choose optimized stock for a regular experience that'll appropriately throttle to maintain a reasonable temp.

Issues after OTA

well i know i read somewhere the phone tends to be slow to wake up, has anyone encountered other issues, mine just feels sluggish everytime i wake it up, it takes longer than it used to and once it does it takes it a second or two to become snappy, didnt happen like this before the OTA.
oh don't tell me that. my phone is flashing the update as I was reading this...
Lol I knew there was a reason not to take the ota I told myself to wait until the xda community had a look at it

Weird. I flashed Juggs update and haven't experienced that issue.
Does changing the battery to performance making any difference?
So far, no silent calls, so that's great! The phone seems pretty solid now. But I' still probably going to trade it for a Epic 4G Touch
I do find it a little slower when unlocking but other than that the OTA update addressed every problem I had.
My phone is now extremely sluggish when waking up after the update.
Sent from my MB855 using Tapatalk
I too have noticed the phone is a little slower at first but I can live with that. My biggest problem since the update is my battery life seems to have deteriorated. When I look to see battery usage now phone idle is always over 50%. I've tweaked everything I know to tweak and it won't improve. The battery life was what I loved the most about this phone and since the update it's definitely not as good as before.
Dont know if this is due to the OTA update but I have had my phone "turn off" twice. I went to use it and the phone wouldnt turn back on. I held the porwe button nothing pushed it many times... Nothing. So i thought the battery must been dead and plugged in and said it had 60% power and then i was able to power back on. And then it did it all again when i had 90% power. Weird. Either way im going to be taking it back to BB and getting a new one.

Yes i also have slow on wake and still silent call issues. I exchanged the phone 2 days ago, did the update in the store and my 3rd call had the silent bug. I hope there is a fix because i really do like this phone. Only 3 days left before my 30 days. Decisions decisions...
I'm getting silent calls still even after the update

EVO 3D will not power up

Any ideas?
I was in TWRP at the main menu, instead of clicking power off, I pulled the battery to replace the sd card with another. Now it will not power up, when I plug it in..no red light?
Thanks in advance...Jim

See if you have any luck trying to boot without an sd card in there. Also, try holding down on the power button for at least ten seconds

This happened to me about a week ago. Charging it was what fixed it.
If charge it doesn't fix go to a sprint store and let them charged the battery the did the trick for.my EVO 4G once the happened, for.some reason the battery seems dead when is nor really dead
MGS on my iPad
Maybe check the battery connectors dood. I know some htc models have problems with those.
Coz i just saw it in 3D with the Shooter!
mines not powering up either.. Never turned it off, woke up this morning & it was off. Not powering up. been on charger all night
happens all the time to me. i know its a flaw, but ive learned to NEVER let my battery go all the way dead. If i see it get around 5-10% ill just put in on airplane mode til i can get to a charger. Also if you battery is very low, turning it off or pulling the battery will cause it to get an attidude and not turn back on for 15-20 min
Yeah, I have been having lots of "attitude" from my battery or power button or on/off code or whatever is making these things not want to power on reliably.... Not to mention the random charge-light-on-wont-turn-on antics. Has been happening more and more frequently and nothing i do works reliably so I just try them all until one works.
I can't have this. This morning I woke up to a locked phone, screen off, green light on, won't turn on.... And totally dead battery while plugged in? Good thing my nook is so reliable as an alarm clock or I might have been in deep **** at work.
It's not the rom or kernel... I've tested everything. I think it's deeper than that. I might not be able to wait for the nexus-prime.... Sgs2 might have to do.

I've seen a lot of these posts. I usually never let mine get in the amber even but I recently flashed viper rom so i wanted to do a battery calibration...meaning..reset stats from full charge..then use it till it dies. After reading these posts I realized mine hadnt died on me any yet. After 16 hours of heavy abuse (12 hours of normal music streaming, calls, text, web surfing etc...and 4 hours of just playing youtube video's with all radio's on trying to kill the damn thing) it finally croaked. Worked just fine though.
Maybe something to do with certain shipments. I've seen a lot of posts on htis but no one ever puts out a batch number or anything. Perhaps all the ones having issues came from a similar batch...and have some designation of affiliation with said batch. Just a though..if we could discover some trend in this...perhaps they'd consider acknowledging it and helping users with issues...or at least help new comers to the thread avoid particular troublesome ones.

AWFUL signal strength. actually, worse Ive ever had on a phone.
my EVO never came back. I was at 60% batt life when I put on charge last night & was dead ass hell this morning.. no life at at.. Sprint tech took it apart it said the phone apears like new, just lifeless. swapped battery with 3 others, no good. So I figured it would be a long shot but I took it back to the store I got it from 36 days ago.. & Explained what happen.. Swapped me out with another one right then & there!..

HELP - Bootloop

Alright, so this phone is becoming extremely frustrating.
The very first day i got the rezound I had it for literally five hours right from the store and I figured i would restart it to freshen things up after messing around with setting up my home screens.
Upon my phone turning back on, it booted up to the lockscreen... froze... turned itself on and then restarted itself and it LOOPS... it does NOT get past this point it bootloops the process
So I pulled the battery a few times, then did a factory reset in hboot and the problem fixed itself, so I gave it the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe it was just a fluke so i reset everything back up... now three days later... I restarted the phone... upon turning it back on... SAME THING... BOOTLOOPING for no reason
I have never tried to temp root my phone or do anything whatsoever. This is a 100% legit phone but its becoming extremely annoying. Im returning this thing to VZW tonight and exchanging it for another one but im torn between exchanging it for a different rezound or just straight up returning it and waiting for the nexus december 8th to come out.
There have been ALOT of reported problems with this phone from my bootlooping... dead pixels... horrible battery life... etc
Dont reboot it anymore. There is an app in the market called fast reboot.when you need to freshen the phone just push the icon and it wiill get all the free memory in about 10-15 seconds.
Sent from my Galaxy Tab 10.1
im supose to be locked into a phone for the next 2 years that i cant reboot because it bootloops?
I have seen several people with boot-looping issues.
I'm not one of them and I don't think it is rampant with this phone. As for dead pixels and horrible battery life - those issues are even fewer and far between.
I wouldn't say there have been ALOT; probably a normal percentage of definite defective units mixed with people being unfamiliar with "how things work" on a phone like this.
..... my $.02
yeah im returning it at VZW tonight for a new unit... if the second one has any issues at all that have been described on this forum so sorry i gave them two chances... returning and waiting for nexus
You also gotta realize your hearing about a ton of issues with the phone, because only people with issues are posting about it. The other 90% that dont have issues arent posting.
Anytime a new phone comes out about 10% of them are duds with the same problems you are describing. When the nexus comes out their forum will be full of threads about problems with that phone. Read thru the android forums and no matter what the phone, you will see complaints about the phone. i have been reading them for years.

I had the phone for about 7 hours three have been fighting loops. My temporary solution is to disable LTE and put my standard size battery in the device ? I don't know why, but I have a hunch that my specific device may be verry sensitive to heat issues.
I called Verizon and they show the boot cycling a known issue and that it was submitted to HTC.
The phone does not seem overly hot to Me so my hunch could be wrong

Ok here's what I did. I shut down, removed the 4G sim and rebooted. It fully booted with no cell service of course. I went into the LTE switch and set it to CDMA auto. I shut down, re-inserted sim, booted up and it's working. Not sure if all that was necessary, but that's what I did...

Bootloops = Heat
In my experience, Bootloops are a result of heat. The phone heats up (or the radio heats up), the phone reboots on the thermal warning, but the bootup time is not nearly long enough to cool down a phone that hot, so once the OS (or kernel) loads to the point where it starts checking for thermals, it sees a heat issue, and reboots.
I have this on my DInc which I was hoping to replace with a Rezound because of these bootloops, but of course I am going to have sit and see if this subsides (or what the Nexus people say) because ...
... you are right, you do NOT want a phone for 2 years which bootloops when you use it for 15 minutes. It is hell.
What is causing all the heat on your phone ??

I asked and called Verizon again. I found someone with a little more info.
it seems that an above average amount of devices where sent out with a corrupted OS.
The corrupt Rom is having issues with its signal acquisition and causing issues.
its heating up from consistently trying to cycle thru signal acquisition etc etc.
I kinda believe they have nailed the issue- as we booted up the device with no back cover on,and bam!- a perfect phone that functions without the reboots ( Obviously no signal),but it works.
I have a replacement coming Tuesday.
Hmmm i think mine has something like that. BUT i dont do it so much.
Had the same issue with mine last night. Removed Sim disabled all network services and replaced Sim and it worked when I enabled networks again. Mine has been set to cdma only also. I think it might be an issue when authenticating with Verizon that somehow crashes the phone.

Let's hope that is the problem since I haven't had it and would hate to see it be a hardware problem. That is something that can be fixed with an update. I think phones are getting to thin for their own good. Cases problem don't help either.
For what it is worth, my phone is charging, streaming music, and I'm on the internet with auto brightness on. The temp is reading 100F. When I first got it, I was trying to kill the battery so I streamed Netflix over 4g and it got warm but never rebooted. Hope they figure this out for y'all.

I got stuck bootlooping related to the fb chat widget. As soon as it would load, sense would restart and after 10-20 the phone started rebooting.
Non stop. I got it to boot with battery cover off (no reception).
Cover on, it would restart as soon as the lock screen was up.
Battery pull, no help.
So I did a battery pull, guessed volume down +power and choose factory reset.
No fb chat widget and no issues so far

I'm on The Base .7.1 and i've had my phone reboot on it's own a few times (on .5 and .7 it did this as well). it doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing...i can be taking a phone call or answering a text, it can be sitting in my pocket or playing chess.
the only thing that is constant is that AFTER the reboot, some application or other has updated itself via Google Play. perhaps there is some conflict occurring when application updates are presented to the Google Play app? could just be coincidence, but it has self-rebooted many times now and every time it comes back up there is a newly applied update to some installed application.
Had a Samsung Captivate that did that, called "sleep death" and was frequent. ATT swapped it out saying there was a bad batch and it never happened again.
My LGOG did it once the other night; well it did a full reboot by itself. If it becomes an issue I'll take it up w/ ATT again.
Had it happen twice in the past 2 days just in my pocket. Starting to get a bit frustrated with this phone.
Had this happen to me at least twice. Funny thing is the phone died in the same general geographic area each time.
Both times I had over 65 or 75% battery left and I was driving a few hundred miles across areas with bad cell reception. on the way back from my trip I actually chanced to look at the phone because I half expected it to be off due to having experienced the unintended power down before. Phone was NOT plugged into a charger. In the past, driving through these areas would put certain phones into power saving mode where cell function shuts down or phone. I think it's related to driving without reception or just no reception.
Normally I can leave this phone sitting and it stays on and wakes up without a fight.
Called AT&T, they are trying to run me through the whole hard reset/phone swap process.
Wanting something a bit stronger, I got LG's number. They said I was the first person to report the issue.
Both companies suggested turning the device off and charging to 100%, although they were both general suggestions (still, I hadn't tried that). The LG tech actually suggested that I take the battery out and... Well I didn't let that go any further.
LG said I could send my device to them instead of AT&T, if I wanted. They don't presend phones so you'll be SOL for "5-7 days" but I feel better that they would actually look at it instead of just throwing it in a "refurb" pile when the screen turns on.
Anyway, call them! Press 1 for English, 1 for Mobiles, I got an answer in 3 seconds. At least help put this on their radar. 800-793-8896.

[Q] Problem with Battery full drain out of no where

Hi,
Wondering if anyone can help me...I'm at a total loss. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
About a month ago my i717 Note started having issues where I'd be using it and suddenly just power off without warning. When I try to reboot it without being connected to wall charger, it very rarely boot back up, usually dies again mid boot.
If it's actively being powered to the wall/USB the issue has never happened...Most of the time after this happens the battery will indicate that it is actually completely drained ie 0% batter life...however sometimes once it's plugged in it will show some other % that isn't even low battery.
This issue occurs even though I could have 90% battery life prior to the crash. My battery stats in settings shows normal discharge, then just a straight veritical line to 0% followed by the normal recharging...
I have 2 batteries, both Samsung OEM so I cannot think both my batteries happened to crap out at same time.
I had been on Black Jelly for many months without any sort of issue, then suddenly this. I have tried these things, to no effect at all:
- delete batterystats.bin in /system/data
- added several layers of tape on the bottom of battery to ensure has full/tight contact with pins
- loaded several different ROMs
- Completely wiped (Factory Reset, Cache, Data, System...and eventually even did Internal and External Memory wipes from TWRP)
- Odined back to Stock 4.1.2 image
The last application I loaded was Google Hangouts and was also the application I first noticed the issue. I video chat with my parents with it and first noticed it happen there which thought was odd since phone never warned me for low battery...however now it happens all the time despite all the steps I took above plus I don't have Hangouts loaded on the phone atm.
I am currently running Stock 4.1.2 and it's still happening there. As is I cannot use my phone for probably more than 5 minutes without this happening. If I can't solve this I'm going to have to go back to my Cappy which just makes me sad since my Note had been a good phone previously.
Since it's happening across ROMs and after total wipe (if there is any more wiping I should do that might help let me know), plus Odin back to Stock I feel as though it must be some sort of crazy hardware issue. I've only ever seen this happen when I'm actively using the device...it hasn't happened when in in sleep mode (ie screen is off).
Any ideas?
TIA
I agree this happening with 2 batteries is hard to believe, but I will ask anyway.
How old are the batteries? They are notorious to go south after about a year.
Are they swollen at all.

Thanks for the reply...
They both 2+ years old now. No bulging they would appear to be in good shape. I've never had excessive battery drain before, and currently when the issue is not happening the battery life is ok. IE if I don't use my phone at all, battery drain is about what I'd expect. I haven't seen the issue happen when it's sleeping, just if I'm actively using the phone.
Sometimes the issue doesn't happen, and it'll discharge all the way down to 0% normally...it's so random and frustrating...I do know that if I use my phone non-stop for probably about 10 minutes it's going to happen though, usually in less than 5 minutes. Again, I don't see the drain, it looks like normal discharge and I'll go from 75% -> phone off in the blink of an eye. Oddly if I then plug it in the battery charging icon you get (when is powered off) sometimes indicates it's actually not empty.
Also of note when it does happen the phone isn't hot, I can handle the battery fine. Also I have the OEM wall charger for the extra battery, so I know that the battery should be getting fully charged from that (so isn't a USB charge issue on the phone itself).
Is there a good battery stats app I can try? The battery stats in sys settings doesn't show anything hogging.
Thanks again.
All those apps are going to do same thing and I don't put a lot faith in them. 2 years is a long time for battery. Mine went south at about a year and went bad in a hurry. Running KK doesn't help either, it's a real battery sucker on our notes.
You are not the first to run into this issue with those symptoms. I believe more often than not, resolved with new battery. I just got one myself from Amazon for $9. Ravpower 2750 I think. There is a thread in accessories.

Fair enough I may try that...
The other thing that happened that maybe points to hardware is that previous to all this happening I got a bunch of errors when Play would try to auto update my apps, saying there wasn't enough space. I was on vacation at the time, so I didn't have any time to try to figure it out. Then this battery thing started happening. Not sure how it could be related, but maybe my RAM is fubar.
I'm getting my Cappy back from a friend so I may try that first, I kinda miss that phone...
Thanks again

Well, another thing that needs to happen every now and again, is going completely back to stock. Re root and everything. Completely clean the pipes. It does wonders.
