I have successfully rooted my Nook using my MAC and the NARS method. I believe this is considered softrooting. I do like the B&N Nook Reader and was hoping to continue to use it. I do not have a MicroSD card yet, but it is on the way.
The main problem I have is properly storing and utilizing files in the extra 15GB of internal space.
If I want to get files on my nook, I hook it up through the USB to my Mac. It only recognizes "MyNook"-- the 1GB of space that B&N allows me to use.
As many have suggested, I installed Root Explorer and can successfully move files out of that 1GB and into the extra 15GB space. However, those files do not show up in my Nook Reader software and it does not look like I can browse to those folders in the Nook Reader.
Am I going about this all wrong?
Is there a way to use my Mac to access that extra internal space?
Is there any way to get the Nook Reader to recognize the files in that space?
Lastly: I figured I would just install Aldiko to read those files, but it says that because it can't mount the SD card, it can't find files. But I don't have an SD card-- I have 16GB of internal storage!

I had the same issue and solved it as follows:
I store my media (books, videos, mp3's, etc. ) in the /data/media directory - I get about 12Gb free. I set the directory to be R/W using Root Explorer and changed the permissions to allow "others" full read, write and execute (again using Root Explorer). I was then able to access the files in /data/media with my Ebook reader (Cool Reader), mp3 player (I use Mort Player) and videos (I use MVideo Player). I then changed the /data directory to RO.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. So, my other question is-- can you utilize the native Nook Reader to see these files? If not, can you reassign the small book icon in the notifications tray to go to Cool Reader-- or will that only go to the native Nook Reader?
Lastly, does anyone have an answer regarding accessing the internal storage via USB/Mac?

Sorry, still very confused. I navigated to the /system/app and the Library.apk was in there already. I launched it and used Package Installer to reinstall it, but it works exactly the same as before.
I also installed Cool Reader and it doesn't seem to be able to navigate below the /mnt/media directory. Is it a permissions thing?

I had a similar thought about putting my movies in that same folder, so I followed your steps. When I plugged my NT into my computer, however, only the same two options popped up---MyNook and my sd card. So far as I can tell, the computer is still not recognizing the /data/media folder, so I'm still unable to sideload into that folder.
Have I missed a step? Am I doing something wrong? Do I need another program to "help" me sideload into that folder?

You will not be able to see the internal storage on a PC (unless your PC is a Linux box) - it can only be seen on the device using a file explorer such as Root Explorer or ES File Explorer.
You sideload there by placing a file in one of the two partitions that you can see and then moving/copying it with one of the two aforementioned file managers.

Hey, I can access the root and thus internal storage and also the mounted ext-sd card in Snowball's mod via my PC (Win 7). Try googling it to d/l it for free.

Change time zones: Settings -> Time -> Select time zone -> Check the box "Show all world time zones"

Okay, so I ran the script to give me access to my internal storage. Someone else is telling me I now need to put whatever files I want MX Player to see, in /mnt/internal. But you clearly state that you put them in /data/media. Either way, MX Player isn't seeing them, and I've got all rights checked on all of these locations.
What am I missing?

Why are you running a script? I think that you are making it needlessly complicated for yourself. If you just follow what I did here: I store my media (books, videos, mp3's, etc. ) in the /data/media directory - I get about 12Gb free. I set the directory to be R/W using Root Explorer and changed the permissions to allow "others" full read, write and execute (again using Root Explorer). I was then able to access the files in /data/media with my Ebook reader (Cool Reader), mp3 player (I use Mort Player) and videos (I use MVideo Player). it will work
It might be easier to go back to the original clrboot file and start over. And make certain that the media partition that you place your stuff in is /data/media - there should be about 12 Gb free.

I followed your steps above, which is why I asked at all... because it didn't work for me. I will try going back to the original clrboot file. I assume I just rename it back to .sh and reboot, correct?
Where can I see how much space is free, once I do that?

So, not sure why this happened, but apparently the actual video files, which were in folders on my SD card, DID NOT move with the folders when I copied them to both /data/media/videos and /mnt/internal/videos. Just empty folders.
So, I need to get them back on my Nook, as I've since deleted them from my SD card, and try this again.

Well no real harm done. Why no try with one file first instead of a whole folder - I usually do that when unsure - if it works then your good to go.

Yeah, doing that now. Something funky happened when cutting and pasting a folder with *.avi files within in. Only copied the folder but, of course, deleted the *.avi files. Next time, I'll know to only use copy and paste, and delete later.
UPDATE: Okay, here's what I did:
1. Deleted the clrboot file I had copied previously. Renamed original one back to .sh. Rebooted.
2. Tried getting all of this to work without redoing the clrboot file thing again. Didn't work.
3. Copied the clrboot zip from this site again, and copied it to /system/bin, after naming the original one with the .bk ext.
4. Rebooted.
5. Created a "Videos" folder in /data/media.
6. Set the /data/media folder's permissions to allow everything. All boxes checked.
7. Copied one *.avi file to /data/media/videos.
8. Specified that folder in MX Player.
9. MX Player doesn't see it.
UPDATE TO UPDATE: It sees it! Yea! It's seeing it in /data/media/videos and /media/My Files/videos. I don't need it in both places, but was playing around with different locations.
Now, if I could just get MX Player to stop crashing on me.

It might be worth a try using mVideo player (free in market)

The zip file is supposed to be unzipped.
In addition not all of the permission boxes are set on my clrbootcount.sh, though I use Root Explorer.
A Further Thought
Can you try to put back the original clrboot script, reboot and then try to load a file into your data/media partition - I am concerned about the results of using the modded script. I attached the original clrbootcnt file - it has a doc extension - please change clrbootcnt.doc to clrbootcnt.sh and then try to use it.
Hi, I was wondering. My Galaxy S3 had little space left on internal storage, but I have plenty on my external SD card. If I move game files, like Gameloft for example, to my external SD and symlink the files, would that work? Any disadvantages to this method? I have a rooted phone and ROM Toolbox.

I don't symlink the files, but bind-mounting the game directories work for me (Jet Set Radio, GTA III, ShadowGun). I use DirectoryBind for this. There's a guide in this forum on how to use it, but it's not to pick up on its own - just make sure you have the alternate dbase mgmt option ticked so that the program actually saves your mounts.
Alternative mgmt? Can you elaborate? I have this app, but I don't really get along with it, and it gave new a few errors now and then, I was worried of losing game saves and stuff.

Ah, for the application to actually retain the bind points you set after a reboot, you have to open the settings of Directory Bind and tick the "Alternate dbase mgmt" option.
Honestly, I haven't had any problems using it. After setting it up (Bind on boot enabled, Handle USB connection enabled, the default data path set to "/storage/extSdCard", default target path set to "/storage/sdcard0/", alternate dbase mgmt ticked and, I forgot to mention this earlier, sorry, Bypass path verification ticked because /storage is a JB thing, and Directory Bind, from the Gingerbread era, doesn't recognise /storage), my typical workflow with it goes like this:
I use Solid Explorer to move the game directory from the internal eMMC to the external microSD: I navigate to /storage/sdcard0/Android/data, find the game folder and move it to /storage/extSdCard/Android/data. I don't use Directory Bind's option for it because game files can take a while to copy and Solid Explorer puts up an ongoing notification while it's copying the files so that you can do other stuff meanwhile without worrying that the phone will close Solid Explorer
I then create an empty folder with the same name as the folder I moved in the original place
Add a new entry in Directory Bind: in the source data path, I select the folder I copied to the external SD by holding the text field; in the the target path, I select the empty folder which used to host the files on the internal eMMC
I then click add, tick the checkbox to the right so that Directory Bind will activate the bind mount on boot and press the floppy disk icon to the left so that I get the bind mount activated now
That's all I do. Only issue I have is that the delete option when removing a bind mount doesn't really work. No biggie. I just open up Solid Explorer.
Regarding your saves: This probably isn't true for all games, but I think most don't save to your SD card - they use the normal area designated by Android for this stuff in /data/data/app.name.

So I have been using google play music app for like two month now, being a huge fan of downloading songs from my own online collection to the device storage (for offline use).
Recently I switched ROM from PA (CM10) 2.54 to a heavily themed and altered samsung based ROM (I'm using a i9300), did not restore much, most apps were downloaded and set up manually again (including play music)... after downloading an album I noticed that I'm running low on free space.
Well I thought this couldn't be since there really isn't much saved on the card, so I checked: the files I can see using ES file explorer, root explorer or solid explorer are about 1 - 1.5GB ... no problem here but where did all my space go? I noticed more reduction in free space on that card while downloading more songs... but where are those songs stored? I googled /sdcard/android/data/android.music.com/cache/music this folder nor any similar folder does exist. at least I can't see any such folder!
Is it somehow hidden? I really think I need to manually delete the old MP3s from prior ROM switching but I just can't locate that stupid folder.
I know that folders starting with "." are usually treaded as hidden but root explorer displays them and I still can't find the correct folder. How to free that space?
Connect your phone to pc...enable hidden file display and search for .mp3 files in sd card...you will get the list.

@coolprateek.kumar: Connecting phone to computer using MTP seems to fail detecting hidden files, even if selected so in my windows OS.

Connect as usb storage...or put sd card in non android phone or sd card reader and search via pc

I'm not sure if it shows up in MTP. Either mount as USB storage in the ROM if possible or in recovery, then you should see the folder.

So I'm trying to symbolic link the cache of google music to my external SD, but the Cache file seems to be persisting even after I try to delete through Rom toolbox (root browser). I tried overriding the cache file through renaming my symbolic link short cut, but it just seems to end up INSIDE the cache file unchanged. Not sure how to test if this is actually working or not... Anyone properly get this set up to work on Verizon GS4?

I've had this working on mine using the root browser in Rom Toolbox. This is what I did:
0. Open ROM Toolbox > Root Browser
1. Make a folder in your desired location (sdcard) called "Music" or something to that sort.
2. Tap and hold, select the option "Create Shortcut" at the bottom
3. Navigate to /data/data/com.google.android.music/
4. Paste (to create the shortcut)
5. Delete the "files" folder in this directory
6. Rename the shortcut to "files"
This will cache all music files and album art to the sd card location you choose. Items will still appear to be in the location on the internal storage, however if you watch the available space on your SD card and Internal Storage after caching a ton of music, you will notice only the SD Card is increasing despite the apparent presence on the internal storage location.
Interesting, it's "files" and not "Cache"? I didn't know that's the case, let me try it now.

So, when I try to delete the file "files", it isn't deleted at all. It just... stays there, so when I rename my file "Music" to "File", the file "Music" goes under the file named "file". It's a bit confusing, but the thing I'm curious about is that I cannot delete the file named "file" it seems, through the root browser.
I can copy/move files from internal storage to SD Card if I use the built-in file manager. However, if I use any 3rd party file manager, the operation will fail. It is as though the SD Card is read-only. I can copy from the SD Card to internal storage just fine.
I've tried ES File Explorer, File Manager Pro, Solid Explorer and they all failed. I've given grants to write to the root of SD-Card. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

I really don't get it. At first, nothing works. Then when I install Root Explorer and grant storage access to the root of the SD-card, it immediately works.
Then I tried MiXplorer and it also works. Now when I return to Solid Explorer and it is working now.
What's going on? Does Root Explorer unlock something which makes it "click"? I don't get it at all. I only hope it is reliable in the long run and not switching "on" and "off" randomly.

Root Explorer has been the ultimate for me. I bought the paid version when it first came out years ago. It always acomplishes whatever task I need it to do.

Not working for me.. I am using Honor V10... recently, I installed the android 10 (EMUI 10) update via ota (over the air). I have tried Root Explorer, ES file manager pro, but no file manager is able to write to external card except default file manager (which is pre installed)
PS: My phone is not rooted.

This option is already enabled but still not working... pls see tge attached screenshot for your reference.

I have a new P30 Pro and Nano SD card Just arrived.
I can write (and read) the card by external reader, connecting the phone via USB to a PC, etc. etc.
But when the card is on the phone I can only use Heawei file manager!!!
I have enable the option allow apps to write to external card.
I've just update on EMUI 10 build 10.0.0186
I can't beleive I tried a lot file manager and also some alternative app like quickpic and no one works good!!!!
Fix the problem...
After enable the option allow apps to write to external card, I tried to disable developer settings.
Also tried to active some app I've disable before... 2 app, default browser and HiCare!
That's all and now I have no problem writing Nano SD card with all of my app!!!
I also rebbot the phone sveral time...

Under what heading is this...only option I have relating to external memory is force allow apps to external memory.

I tried installing every single Root Explorer there is in the Play Store, but none worked.

Which one of the Root Explorer apps that we can find on Play Store did the trick for you ?

I enabled the default browser and the HiCare app (actually they were not disabled, so I just opened them to complete their setup) but this did not help either.
I even formatted the memory card (using my phone "format card" option) and then reset my phone to factory defaults and set it up again from the beginning without restoring backups.
I still have not found a solution to thus issue, though.
Any ideas anyone?

I had to instal FX file commander to get SD card write permission....I can't make it stick, every time I reboot I have to reset the sd card write permission.
I have similar problems relating to this thread on my mate 20 pro after updating to Android 10 (EMUI 10). I've tried all the methods mentioned here and it worked briefly before restarting the phone. After restarting the phone, it went back to being unable to copy files to External Storage.
I noticed that i was able to delete and rename files on the external storage but i just can't seem to copy anything into it.
I can copy files from the external card to internal storage but not the other way around.
Tried using MiXplorer, the only way i can copy files into the external card is by this method:
i copied the file and it shows error, but there's an image of the file created on the external card with 0 kb. Then i overwrite the file and replacing the '0 kb' file and it worked. And another method to just to use the built-in file manager which is a pain to use and the UI are crappy.
It was a lengthy method and therefore I decided to downgrade to Android 9 for now.
I also noticed i can't change the download directory of my Ttorrent app to any folder of my choice in external storage.
anyone can suggest a better method to overwrite this external drive issue? Thanks in advanced.

- All Huawei and Google apps I have tried, do have access to the memory card (e.g. Google Maps is allowed to save its offline maps on the SD card, the same for Google News and the articles it downloads)
- Some 3rd party apps do have access. E.g. Here We Go maps can save its maps on the external card. ASR Voice Recorder can save its recordings to a specific memory card folder, the one that is automatically created -on the card- by the app when it is installed on the phone. Maybe there are other app that we will find they can, too.
- So it seems that the rule is not general, as Huawei implies at that thread I have posted above.
My biggest concern was that MixPlorer has now limited use, and this is kind of sad as it was my favorite explorer.
Huawei Files manager is not bad, it's actually quite OK, but it bothers me that you cannot add 3rd party clouds on it. If it had that option I would be happy with it. I like it that it has that "favorites" option. For now I have created a folder "My Archives" on the internal memory and I initially save almost everything there (e.g. my Nova Launcher backups). Then I use Huawei Files manager to move them to the external memory card on the folders I want.

Hey that's a good idea of creating a temp folder on your internal drive before using Huawei file manager to transfer everything out to your external card. However it requires additional steps to get it done but it's a good idea nonetheless. Thanks for that suggestion. For me i'm so used to be using solid explorer to do all my file operations as it has google drive integration which makes it easy n fast to transfer between drives. So i guess my best bet is to downgrade to android 9, it's just much more comfortable to work with and in my opinion, android 10 is not that big of a deal and not much substantial changes anyway. Hehe.
Every reboot I always have this facing problem!
Sometime I must reboot because my smartphone switch off for low battery....
When I reboot try to disable and re-enable the special option in developer menù, also try to uninstall and after install again the memory card (from setup/memory menù).
After that try to copy some file to memory card with default file manager an default Gallery...
Sometimes it is enough sometimes I have to try more and more... But after several time it works!
