[Q] Google Play Music help - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have been using google play music app for like two month now, being a huge fan of downloading songs from my own online collection to the device storage (for offline use).
Recently I switched ROM from PA (CM10) 2.54 to a heavily themed and altered samsung based ROM (I'm using a i9300), did not restore much, most apps were downloaded and set up manually again (including play music)... after downloading an album I noticed that I'm running low on free space.
Well I thought this couldn't be since there really isn't much saved on the card, so I checked: the files I can see using ES file explorer, root explorer or solid explorer are about 1 - 1.5GB ... no problem here but where did all my space go? I noticed more reduction in free space on that card while downloading more songs... but where are those songs stored? I googled /sdcard/android/data/android.music.com/cache/music this folder nor any similar folder does exist. at least I can't see any such folder!
Is it somehow hidden? I really think I need to manually delete the old MP3s from prior ROM switching but I just can't locate that stupid folder.
I know that folders starting with "." are usually treaded as hidden but root explorer displays them and I still can't find the correct folder. How to free that space?

Connect your phone to pc...enable hidden file display and search for .mp3 files in sd card...you will get the list.
Hit thanks on help
Using xda premium through A5

It's com.google.android.music not android.music.com
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium

@coolprateek.kumar: Connecting phone to computer using MTP seems to fail detecting hidden files, even if selected so in my windows OS.
@sashank: there is no data folder on that card (not visible)

Connect as usb storage...or put sd card in non android phone or sd card reader and search via pc
Using xda premium through A5

I'm not sure if it shows up in MTP. Either mount as USB storage in the ROM if possible or in recovery, then you should see the folder.
/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.music

Can't find music on SD card

Hey guys,
I've tried he stock music player, mixzing and xplay and nothing can find the music on my SD Card. I've used nearly every current Rezound Rom and they all have this same behavior. I've tried reformatting the SD, clearing data from all music/media search related apps, remounting the SD, fixing permissions, different folders, upper/lower case folder names, etc.
I've searched and found similar threads for different devices but no answers that worked.
Ideas anyone?
Thanks!
Use double twist. It's like iTunes for every device but apple. It'll let you load your music library and make it easier to load music in the future.
Also for reference my music is in sdcard/extsd/music/artists/album/songs
All I did was connect to my phone via USB, open the drive letter right after HTC STORAGE (the next drive letter should be the ext SD card), then make a directory called Music (capitalized), and copy the MP3 files to it, moved 451 files and then disconnected... Everyone show up in the stock music player and WinAmp, although it did take a few minutes for the list to populate.
I am pretty sure when you copy music to the SD card, it has to be in a directory called "Music", you can't just copy them to the root of the card.
I too have always just put all my music in a "Music" folder on the root of my sd, however depending on the device I've had players find music directly at root.
Have you tried using a like manager like astro to navigate to the files and play them directly?

You should be able to copy them everywhere and the music player should find it. I have music in "AmazonMP3" on the root, "musicdownload" where I get my music from Box, "Music" and even a song or two at root and "My Documents\Music" as well as a few in the "Download" folder as I've downloaded through http.
I'd say clear data from the music app in app management and let it rescan the card for data. Also, the phone can read WMA, MP3, MP4, M4A and maybe OGG. If you're trying some other formats I don't know if it'll see it.
P.S. On a funny note, the captcha just had me type TWATUS ... LOL
ROM Manager Sucks
I'll bet you have ROM Manager installed! The last two ROM Manager updates (including todays) for some dumb reason put a file called ".nomedia" in the root of the SD Card. This file prevents all media below it from being indexed.
Browse your SD Card and look for the file ".nomedia" in the root. Delete it and you will see all your media again.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I don't have a .nomedia file anywhere on the phone. I have all the music in a "Music" folder. I've tried everything in this thread as well as a dozen other things from other threads. It just doesn't work.
Weird thing is... the Gallery also can't see any photos/pics on the SD Card. It makes me think its a format problem or something? My SD is formatted FAT32? Should it be different?
How much extra "Junk" do you have on the SD Card... I just helped someone earlier today who had moved a microSD card from a Thunderbolt to the Rezound and it had a lot of extra stuff (old Nandroids, TiBu backups, and lots of other various files) and had the same issues. Copied everything off to a PC and formatted the card in the phone, then copied over the same music in the same folder and it was recognized like normal. Not saying this is the fix, but just did it this morning and it worked fine for someone else.
look in google play for a sd rescan app. Have that scan your card, that will help sometimes.

OMG!!! This worked! I had moved everything off the SD and formatted with the phone like a dozen times but always put everything back all at once. When the only thing on the card was music it found it right off.
Thanks!!

Major thanks for your suggestion. I have an HTC One X+ with stock rom (it's new, I haven't got round to customising yet ) I copied Music folder on my old One X to the new One X+.
The stock music app could not find any of my music. Using the sd rescan app worked and made it find it. I was getting very annoyed with it, so thanks again.

This worked for me, thanks! Songs in my SDCARD\Music folder were not showing up in any music player, but the second I put them into SDCARD\DCIM\100ANDRO, they showed up in Play music! Why is this?

Samsung Galaxy S III don't recognize any MP3 file

Sice a few days I have a very strange error on my Galaxy S III. On the external SD-Card I have serveral MP3 files but when I start the MP3 Player it says, that there are no MP3s. I have tried another SD-Card and copied the MP3s to the internal SD-Card, no effect. Also some notifications and pictures, which are on the internal SD-Card are missing in the selection menu respectively in the gallery. I have deleted the media storage a few times, so the S III has to reinitialize it, there is no success. Unfortunately then I get some force closes from the media manager.
I have an unbranded version of the S III without LTE and Android 4.0.4 original stock, which isn't rooted.
Try EXT SD MP3 in media folder .
jje
I can't select external SD-Card in media folder. Also it's not possible to update the database manually.
Try rescan media from the playstore

I had the same problem. Looks like media library is not updated. There is a way to update it manually, but it's funny. I have no idea why does it work that way only.
Open your MP3 folder with 'My Files' app and then just move it to any other location. That should solve your problem.
You can try any other file manager, but it won't work
If rescan media does not work, then press menu, manage apps. Scroll down to Media Storage and clear data on that. Re-run rescan media. This will clear the cache and force the phone to rescan all locations for media files again. Also make sure that the folder with the mp3s does not have a .nomedia file in it.
Thank you for your answers. After deleting the Media Storage the phone hasn't recognized all ringtones, notifications and pictures. So yesterday I did a hard reset and after some time I got an error message android.process.media force close. It also happens without external SD-Card and no other media on the internal SD-Card except the stock media. Now the media database ist complete, but when I restart my phone every time I will get the force close. I think, this happens after the last update for about 4 weeks so Samsung did something wrong. Unfortunately there is no official update to Android 4.1.1 yet. I hope, the error disappears with the new firmware.
Hi, I think I can help you. First you try download es file explorer and try play via es player. Then report to me of its working.

[MOD] Play Music download to external SdCard

Great mod I found and modified slightly for the Note II. Saves the music you download from Google Play to your external SD card instead of your coveted internal space which never seems enough. This is easy to do trust me I'm by no means an expert. Credit to skittles who actually credits someone else in his post.
--First off use Root Explorer or something likewise to create a folder on your external SD card named "MusicCache" (It's important to remember CAPS matters during this MOD).
--Next using Root Explorer again create a file named "MusicScript.txt" on your INTERNAL SD card. (Differentiate the two by using Root Explorer to navigate to storage. extSdCard is your external card. sdcard0 is your internal card.
--Download SManager from Google Play (Scripts Manager app). Use Root Explorer to navigate to the file you just created on your internal Sd card "MusicScript.txt" and open into a text editor (your choice doesn't matter, I use TED on Google Play). Type this exactly in "mount -o bind /storage/extSdCard/MusicCache/ /data/data/com.google.android.music/" Save it. IMPORTANT- Depending on what ROM your using your extSdCard may be called something different. Just use Root Explorer to navigate to the specific folders your binding together here and look at the top of the screen when your there. The entire path is written out there for you. This will show you if your card is named something different. CAPS matter!
--Open SManager and navigate to the "MusicScript.txt" file you just got done working on. Make sure the first time you open it you click the Search with Root option and grant it root access. You'll need root access for this. Click on the file and select "Su" (Superuser) and "Boot" (Boot option) located near the top and save it.
--Open settings and go into application manager. Find your Play Music (Google's music app) and force stop and clear data on it.
--Lastly, Reboot. If you did everything correctly you'll open Play Music app and have to reselect your account. Next go into select music for device and it should have your external Sd card space on the bottom instead of your internals.
Good Luck
This is sweet worked perfect! Is there a way to do the same for movies off google play?

If you guys are using the xposed framework there is a module called music2sd and it works flawlessly. A little easier to use thank this.

This is cool.
I was using 1106K version of Play Music, because it was the last version that had support for the Nova Launcher SD selector activity. Now I can upgrade my Play Music version.

Write to external SD.

So, I'm not a noob, been rooting and running custom since the Nexus 1. I've searched and tried every fix, but no joy! I'm running doom's latest kernel and Monx latest rom. I've manual changed the proper files, and I've used apps like Fix SD and others and still can't write to my external SD card. Obviously, I'm rooted, so what am I doing wrong? I've seriously tried everything! Even the Music to SD module for exposed acts like it works, but when I try to use Play Music, it says "no space available". Even the Z2 built in "Transfer to SD" facility fails.
Please help!
Thanks,
-Hans

Try this:
1. Using a root-enabled file manager like root explorer, navigate to /system/etc/permissions
2. Edit platform.xml file and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
3. Add this group definition: <group gid="media_rw" />
4. Save changes.
5. Restart.
:good:
if the above method doesent work for you
you can try using a xposed module called handle external storage, it automaticly alows use of your External SDcard by default
*(you need root , xposed installer and the modle its self (it can be found from within the xposed installer under downloads)
Tried both these methods. To be fair, I tried them both again, just to make sure. As far as I know, all methods modify platform.xml, but no matter what I do, I can't write to the sdcard1 folder. My usual test is using Root Explorer to try and create a folder on Sdcard1. Always fails. Honestly, the ROM I'm using should have been enough, as it comes with write to external SD already enabled via the platform.xml tweak already. I even did a full factory reset yesterday to test. Still no joy.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks,
-Hans

Still not working
Many thanks to the gents who replied already. Unfortunately, none of the posted solutions are working. I can't find any information in the forums or elsewhere online that points to this. Everywhere I look, it says that the modification to platform.xml is THE answer. However, I've made those modifications nine ways to sunday and I still can't do anything with my external SD card. Can't create a file or folder using Root Explorer or E Strongs. Can't write backups using TiBu is the BU folder is on external SD, etc. Can't set then succesfulyl use the save location for camera or music apps as external SD. Very frustrating.
Has anyone seen or heard of this happening?
Thanks,
-Hans

Nope. Card works fine as far as I can tell. I can write to it via MTP when connected to my lappie and I can read from it just fine. But, I'll try a spare card when I get home just to completely verify.
Thanks,
i'm having the same problem but my phone is not rooted, i usually us ES File Explorer to do my file browsing and management but for some reason i can't delete, create or rename files or folders on the external SD card.
i did a clean format with my SDXC card in the phone when i first started the device and that's usually exFat. and thats when i started to notice the problem,... i couldn't delete or create files or folders from the ES File Explorer app,.... so i did a clean install again with the ES File Explorer and the problem is still there,.... also when taking picture and deleting the unwanted pictures that i took.... i would still see the pictures i deleted in the picture gallery / album....
im still confused on whats going on,.... last night i reformatted my SDXC card to FAT32,... but the problem is still there,...
i tried using the File Commander app that came pre-installed with the device...... for some reason i can rename, delete and even create files and folders.... this is the only app that let's me do all those things when it comes to the external SD card.
other apps such as QuickPic won't allow me to delete, rename or whatever i have to do my pictures on the external SD card

If you're not rooted, it's how KitKat now handled external (SDCard) memory. It does not allow apps to read/write outside of it's own folder.

Yeah. That's expected behavior on a non-rooted KK phone. My problem is that I'm rooted and I can't get anything to write to external. Total Commander, Root Explorer, ES File Explorer, Camera apps, etc. Nothing will write to External SD no matter how many times I make the required mods to the platform.xml file. It is driving me nuts.

How to transfer files after root

So I've rooted my wifes old nook tablet(bntv250), and it works great, if a bit slow(cm10-20121108-unofficial-acclaim) and I want to transfer some e-books to the internal storage. I can navigate to the location I want them in on the device from the device, but Windows only sees a .99gb internal storage that is empty. I can send some item using the send to kindle email, but want to know how to move items from an external sd card to the internal memory. The file manager is not intuitive in this respect(not like the one on my Samsung phone, which is not rooted). I've tried searching and can't find the info I need. The files I want to move are to big to use send to kindle email. Other than this one issue, I am really liking this thing now that it is rooted. Wish I had done it 2 years ago... TIA
You should be able to use a file manager app to copy/move content from SD card to internal memory. Which file manager are you using? FWIW, I use ES File Explorer and it works great -- with its "Root Explorer" option enabled you can access any folder/file.
Trying to use the one that came in the ROM, but I see no way of moving the files around. I had to get root access just to find the folder I wanted to put files into. And why can't windows see the internal memory?

The internal storage and the user-media are on two different partitions, standard Windows can access only one partition of a removable drive, in this case it's the user-media (FAT32) partition.
