Bricked phone? Or just plain dead broken, - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, I know perhaps im not suppoes to type this here. But, while following a guide for the ALLIANCE Rom. The powergrid in my building went down, and my phone is just wacked dead. I did start the ODIN procedure, went about 2 min and then poff. My phone wont start no matter what I do now, any tip on what I can do to get it runing again? Can't start in normal, recovery or download mode. I've tried soft and hard reset aswell, any ideas?

You can access Download Mode?
If not Try using USB Jig it should solve your Problem

That I can indeed. But I do not have the time to wait, I need my cellphone, my old Rom and Kernel were really bad and laggy ,needed a new one, and found a recommended one. Since im on a buisness trip, getting a Jig and waiting for setting it up just won't work. Is there no other way? For example getting it on to the pc, booting it up in some way there getting it in DL mode and get the Stock Kernel or something?

Nope. If a jig doesn't work, it's either a JTAG (actually, it may be JTAG'able given it died during a flash), or some kind of hardware repair (maybe replace motherboard).
Not sure what you're expecting anyone here to say to you beyond "Try a jig", etc, etc ? Not like we can scatter some magic pixie dust & your phone will be all better.
If the phone won't boot, you've tried another battery & you have no download/recovery mode, you're toast. Or......maybe try King Rat's trick where he attempts to 'jump start' the phone without the battery using just the charger (search for his username then go thru his posts till you find the method). There's a 0.000000001% chance that might work.
Edit - If you're in the position of 'Your phone just has to work. All the time" (as you appear to be in), flashing anything on your phone is folly. If you really need it, that's the last thing you should be doing given the risks (tho normally small) involved.

possible fix
how about you try taking the phone and pulling the plug and taking out the battery
after you do that odin back to stock
First you want to post in q&a. Second as to your phone does it do anything. Does the bottom row of lights come on. Does it boot to any screen? Third have you read the vibrant directory (bible)? Forth have you downloaded odin?

Check to see if your battery died somehow, but if you can't turn on your device even with a full battery, you have a real bricked phone.
Battery I fine, if I plug the charger in it doesn't charge or show that it's charging. How could this happen just from flashing a file?
Call tmobile and tell them that your phone said it was updating and once it restarted, it never came back on. They will have you check a few things and then send you a replacement for free. In the future be very careful when learning to mod your phone, ask questions when your not sure. This replacement trick will only get you a phone one time.
I was thinking to do that, only that my carrier is simple mobile, they do not offer insurance, sigh, I think I may be out of a phone
where did you get this update.zip?/
What update.zip did you flash?

No; it is unlikely that you are out of a phone. Try this method, either buying or making a USB "test jig." (You can make it if you know how to solder.)
http://board.teamwhiskey.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=209
If this does not work, there is another method that is expensive (but less than $500 for a new phone). You will need to find a technician with a "JTAG" test device who has a special bootloader software module from Samsung. The device uses an interface other than USB to access bootloader memory and downloads the bootloader file to the bootloader memory in order to boot the phone into a recovery environment.
The only way that your phone would be completely unrecoverable is if there was a hardware failure at the same time that you were playing around, which is unlikely.

Dude it's bricked....game over. Call tmobile and just tell them your phone doesn't turn on anymore, don't tell them how it happened, just that it stopped working. They will send you a replacement for free, if you're still under warranty it is. I bricked mine 2 weeks ago and got my replacement the next day. I tried EVERYTHING to get it back to life....but nothing. Sometimes it happens even though you follow all steps, especially if it messed around with your bootloader.
Good luck. It's no ones effen business what you say happened...most likely they do the same.
You shouldn't even be flashing the update.zip... you should be using like OCLF to do it for you. This should help:
http://androidspin.com/2010/08/09/how-to-restore-or-recover-your-samsung-vibrant/
I would STRONLGY suggest to listen what BruceElliott says, read and follow the directions carefully. In 99% cases you can recover just fine. It's very hard to truly brick vibrant...

You've got to be able to get into download mode to do that though. I think that's the problem.
I'd mess around with it for a bit and try all of the tips to get into download mode. I can't believe you'd hard brick it based on what you said. You are positive your battery is okay?
I had the same problem. It would not turn on at all. I called Samsung and they paid to send it back for warrenty repair. It takes 6 business days. They didn't even ask how it happened. I think the number was 800-samsung
Nah, you don't need a Jig just yet
I've ran into that problem MANY TIMES!! The first time it freaked me out too.
Take out the battery, take out the sim card. Leave it for about 5 minutes. Then do these steps:
- plugged the phone in without the battery
- Hold down the 2 volume buttons
- As you're holding those 2 buttons down, insert the batter
- You should be in download mode
- Proceed with Odin
Can you tell us what update.zip you used? Good luck!

The first hard brick?

Idk what I did, but my phone is completely un responsive.
didn't drop in water or anything...
I odined and I'm 100% I did it right I've odined over 300 times.
I have a friend who works at tmobile and he said he can get me a replacement in a day or two.
I love this phone don't want a refurb, but if I have to I will.
Is there a fix?
I'm just going to ask it this way from now on. What methods did you use to try to get into download mode?
Absolute worst case you could try the JIG method. Or sell it to me and I'll try the JIG method lol.

That would have been helpful information in the OP.

I used the stock JFD files that have worked for me every time. The different thing that happened was the usual part where the phone boots up and starts normally, it showed a ! Icon nothing more than that.
It showed up for like 30 seconds then the whole screen went red and nothing works.
Sorry for not including this in the OP I was trying to fix it myself.
I'm using my brothers vibrant right now

Hi! I was doing this guide to do a STOCK ROOM format....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989&page=6
And it all went well i did the step-by-step guide...until Odin showed this "Do not turn of target"... ok so i w8 somewhat 10 mins and it still stood there..i was about to go from my desk to my printer when i accidently pulled the cable off from the computer and so it started...
First of all i dident take out my sim card before i did the procedure!
The phone was still in "Download mode" and i was unable to turn it off.
I opened the back cover to reach the battery and pulled it out and also i took out my sim card (just incase).
Tried to reboot my phone but it wont boot nor does it start to charge with the USB cable inserted in my PC.
My phone is practicly dead now and im kinda got a baad feeling about it...
Does anyone know or does anyone have a fix or solution for this?
Shouldent there be a reset button somewhere inside the phone to do a hard reset?
Note to reader: Ive done the hard and soft reset

Not necessarily.
A similar thing happened to me a while ago during a firmware update using Kies. I was able to use Odin to flash an older version of the firmware then reflash using Kies.
Plenty of guides on here about using Odin to 'unbrick'.

How can i use Odin to unbrick it when i cant get it in download mode ?
Look on eBay for "Samsung Galaxy S2 jig" (minus the ", obviously ). Shouldn't cost more than a couple of bucks. If that doesn't get you in download mode it's either back to Samsung/your telco or....
You could try this guy . I can't vouch for their service, but I have seen a couple of positive reviews on here from memory and they might end up being cheaper/easier than going the Samsung/telco route if they refuse to fix it under warranty.
I have also seen reports/experiences where the local Samsung outfit didn't care the phone had been messed with & fixed it under warranty anyway.
So you've got a couple of options

If I were you I would do whatever I could to get this phone fixed. I had a problem similar to yours mine got stuck in download mode after a failed attempt at rooting using oden. I guess I got lucky though because I pulled the battery and the phone booted right back up with no problems. I would highly suggest keeping this phone it is far better than the Iphone 4s. My bro has it and he is always amazed at the things I can do with my phone that his cant! Not to mention the screen is a whole inch bigger and looks ALLOT better! Also, dont forget the 4s only has 512mb ram and a dual core 800mhz cpu while this beast has 1gig of ram and a 1.2ghz cpu! Thats a total of 800 more mhz for the galaxy! Not to mention allot of custom roms allow you to overclock!
If you want to do some modding, you should order it anyway. jigs are very cheap and you can remove the yellow triangle with it if you switch to a custom kernel. And like others say, force the phone into download mode.
Don't give up yet. You won't regret being a bit patient here ;-)

[Q] Please help!!!

Hi Guys!!,
I have an S2 and sadly while doing an update through ODIN, it was interrupted in between and got "ODIN FAIL " message. After that, I tried doing a hard reset, soft reset and even connecting my phone to different computers but somehow there seems to be no life in the phone. Good news is, I know there is nothing wrong with the hardware(as i got it checked by a technician). I just want to know how to start the phone, just to see the symbol, so that i can have it reflashed.Battery has also been completly charged , yet no change
Model:- i9100
Please help.. you guys are the only ones who can help

1. Is there any sign of life at all in the phone? Can the phone light up at all?
2. Remove the battery for few minutes ( up to 10mins), the try again if there is sign of life)
If after trying 1 and 2, there is still no sign of life in your phone, then you can simply conclude that Your bootloader has probably been messed up, and therefore your device is hardbricked!
Solution 1:
1. JTAG repair
2. Samsung service repair (free if your device is still under warranty)

[Q] Phone won't boot, enter Recovery Mode, nor connect to PC - what do?

I followed a root-guide a couple of weeks ago and my phone worked perfectly.
I have no memory of what ROM I used, nor do I remember if I flashed a Kernel or not. I'm pretty new at this.
Now, today, my phone sent a notification that a new firmware update was available. Stupid as I am I just press "install" right away. Not much later my phone tried to reboot and suddenly was stuck at the Samsung logo screen. I tried pulling out the battery to reboot and it still wouldn't work. If I connected it to my PC it shows a battery but the spinning arrow-thingy is frozen.
After searching these forums and other places I found several guides on how to fix stuff like this, by either flashing with a new kernel - or rom or w/e I don't know - or going into recovery mode and do something funky. The problem is that I can't reach recovery mode at all, and when I enter download mode it's just frozen at "Downloading..." and I can't get it to connect to my PC at all (tried both with and without Kies). In Odin the ID:COM cells won't update when I connect my phone.
Do you guys have any idea how to resolve this? Do I have to take it to a service centre?
Edit: The phone is out of battery, suddenly, apparently, so I tried to charge it, but that doesn't work either. What the **** has happened to my phone? Please help if you can!

*shameful bump*
As I have no chance of replacing this phone (because I'm pretty much broke) I really need to fix this on my own if I can. Last resort is borrowing money to send it to service.
If you have any suggestions or theories PLEASE reply ASAP. I will truly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance
So Atm what does your phone do? Can you get to download mode? Vol-home and power does it go into that?
Buy a new motherboard. And with your memory, why not borrow the money lol.
-------------------------------------------
maybe your an iphone expert
------------------------------------------
I also stupidly pressed one of those "install update" stuff. Then i had the same symptoms until i removed the battery, then it wouldn't turn on - so i suspected hardbrick.
Lucky enough my warranty still had a month letf and they apparently didn't notice that i had rooted my device and thus vioded my warranty.
Are you sure all Kies' background tasks were closed?
Do you have access to a JIG?
There's anotehr way to get into download mode (other than vol down+power+home) i'll see if i can find it.
If it hardbricks maybe you also can make up a story and give it to them? (just a suggestion, nothing i can say but just mentioning since it worked for me)

It has most definitely hardbricked. I've considered this: Go down there, act dumb, say after installing the firmware update my phone wouldn't boot and a yellow triangle suddenly appeared out of nowhere, or something like that.
I've only had this phone for half a year so I really wanna fix this if possible!
Thanks a lot for the feedback - please reply with more if you've got some suggestions/recommendations/tips/solutions!

Of course this is a drivers thing, you need your pc to see the device.

Oh so you don't think I've googled for hours to find solutions for this problem? Think again. Every "solution" i read is either take out the battery, enter recovery mode or use an USB jig. 2 of them don't work and the third is at the moment not possible as I don't have a jig.
