[q] usb not recognized? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

My SGH-i717 is not being recognized by my computer in download mode only when it is on in regular operating state will the computer recognize it. Because of this I cannot flash anything via Odin. I have tried uninstalling and re installing the drivers which got my phone to be recognized in the normal state... but i want download mode recognized so that I can FLASH ROMS! Stuck on ICS stock.. Strangely the device was recognizable in download mode when I was running Padawan Rom..

In settings is USB debugging checked?

lol

Of course haha.. I am new on here but not to android..

Usb debugging is only for within android itself.
Download mode is underneath, and as such that option is not a factor.
Op.. have you tried every port on the mother board (back of pc) no hubs, no front ports?
Different cables?
If you're unable to get it working, you can follow the directions for rooting and installing a Rom without tripping the flash counter, that method is more advanced, as it requires an adb set up.
but you can copy and paste the commands in from the the thread so that'll simplify it.
That method does not require download mode nor Odin.

Tried all ports different cables, where can I find ADB method? Ive done an ADB push of 4.2 after deleting the entire systems ROM on the nexus 7...
Also would I need to ADB any new rom from here on out or new phone?

Nope this should only be a one time thing ...you'll just need to push a custom recovery.img to the phone.... ionno why your pc isn't seeing it right now bit you've said its worked before. Perhaps flashing a room zip will fix it.
Which you'll be able to do once you have a custom recovery...
Don't have a link, sorry it's late and I'm feeling lazy.
The thread is in the forum, find it, read it, read it, read it again. Then read it once more. Then have fun.
If it's still not being seen on download mode on different firmware, I'd find another pc to try....but at least you ain't stuck on stock. That's a cruel punishment lol

Haha

Enable USB Debugging from Computer

It is possible to enable USB debug from computer? I need to delete some file from the internal memory that causes the problem. I can't connect through adb at all.
I'm trying to fix my secondary phone (Garminfone) that that loads into desktop, but force close launcher and everything else. The only thing that I can do is connect to the computer for file sharing with the phone.
Thank you in advance.
I'm in a bit of a conundrum, myself...
I am attempting to do this, too, but for a totally different reason.
I am a VZW agent trying to extract contacts for a customer from a Moto. RAZR with a completely non-functional touch screen (no display, no function). Phone boots up fine, no sweat. Stock ROM, no backup :crying:, all of the typical means of transfer have been exhausted.
More or less, the only chance I have at succeeding is to either:
Enable USB debugging through some kind of shortcut or trick, or
Somehow, without USB debugging, figure out the user name for the customer's G-mail account (he has two, and cannot remember/doesn't use the one with all his contacts...)
Wouldn't be surprised if it's simply not possible.... but maybe somebody with a bit more knowledge can let us know! :good:
Edit: Hmm, not possible to run adb from the bootloader, but you can run Fastboot commands. None of those seem to be of use for these purposes though...
as mentioned by PhantasmRezound, It's not possible, However. adb is enabled in most recoveries. Also If the device is unlocked ( and you can flash custom recoveries ) in any way you can flash a custom recovery, back up the boot img. pull that off the device or simply put the sdcard in your computer with unpack that, edit the init.rc to start adb. and reflash it with fastboot not quiet what your after but might do the trick.
or
With the non functioning touch screen issue, If the device acts as a usb host, plug a mouse in and away you go
There's always a way.
Thanks for the input...
I appreciate the feedback, but the way I read it... it's either not going to help in this situation, or it's too technical for a noob such as myself and I'm in over my head

Customer's phone is completely stock. Hope I'm following along correctly, but I don't think this is possible without having something like ClockworkMod and pre-existing root access?

Never really tried this... but, I suspect, this won't work... not only does the touch screen not work, but the display is black.
I suppose it could be possible in combination with HDMI-out... but since the HDMI has never been set to "mirroring," I cannot simply plug it in and go (the best and only result I've gotten in this case is the red "M" logo on the screen...)
I would have given up on this hours ago, but it really bothers me when I can't figure out how to do something that appears to be so fundamental and simple...
Thanks for the inputs :good:

Well, I was thinking about this, and I think you can do adb in a stock recovery, should be able to create a backup image with the right software. It all gets a little hazy and wolly on techinical details, so I'm afraid I can't help anyone there.

And you're a noob , I fully understand that my casual, off the cuff, do a,b,c etc reply assumes a lot of technical knowledge, If it's not your phone man, don't stress it too much ..... Just hand it back to them look blankly into the middle distance while shaking your head.....use the following phrase " Nah man you've F*ed this up good, did you not sync it up with your google account at anytime "
Sorry man, I'm drunk, probably shouldn't be at this keyboard now

Unfortunately, Garminfone is a piece of garbage, lol. There's no custom recovery for it. There is nothing I can do now, I guess. I can't get into fastboot or anything because every time I try adb or fastboot it would not recognize the device.

If nothing else, you can do a Factory Reset. You'll lose all data but it will be running again.
Make sure the phone is charged up since this will take a while.
With the phone off, hold down left on the d-pad as you power it on. It will show "Wipe User Data" and then you can let go of the buttons. Just leave it for an hour or so, it will go about wiping and restoring system files from it's own recovery partition.
Also, random Garminfone blog with interesting entries to read while waiting on your phone lol. The person started to develop a port for CWM:
http://mygarminfone.blogspot.com/
PhantasmRezound, I've done tons of wipes but no luck and I'm familiar with the website you posted. Everytime I wipe, I get force process com.android.setupwizard stopped unexpectedly on the phone.
@wolftou
Ok.... A couple more tricks to try for your specific device and then I'm all out of ideas plus it's kinda getting away the original question/topic
1 Android Safe Mode:
Android does have a safemode, exactly the same idea as windows safemode, only needed apps are loaded. This might let you remove the troublesome app.
How to get into it on your device? I have no idea and from my limted research ( google as always ), it appears to vary by manufacturer and probably device. I have booted my tablet into it a couple of times by accident but never really stopped to figure out how, that's not important anyway Just I can confirm this mode exists ( In some androids at least ).
2 Flashing an alternative rom:
Have you tried flashing a different rom? I'm not sure of your model number so I don't whether this is relevant to you but have a look at this thread it looks like you can trigger an update using a sdcard swap trick....
I'm thinking about buying one myself now... just to see what's possible with them, fortunately ( for my wallet at least ) they are not available in the UK and I've got plenty of things to fill my Android addiction for now
all answer not similliar the question

My lenovo vibe s1 is showing black screen
I tried rooting my phone by the steps given by your site and now my phone is showing black screen. i tried pressing volume buttons and power button still it is not working. so when i am connecting my phone to computer it gets connected for 1 min and disconnects and again connects after 1 min. so is there any possible way that i can send my phone to USB debugging through computer.

bricked i9100 help

Hi guys.
Tonight I did a data reset via the system settings menu within the OS so that all personal data can be wiped from the phone.
Shortly after I did this, the phone reset, then just started randomly flashing and not booting, occasionally pausing on a totally white screen.
I tried to enter into recovery mode with no luck, and had no luck with download mode either.
My USB jig worked and got me into download mode, and it now also lets me enter download mode via the 3 button method.
I figured I would just use odin to flash a new kernel/ROM, however the phone refuses to come up in odin and is no longer even recognised on my PC (unknown usb device).
I've tried installing and reinstalling drivers, different usb ports, different cable etc and nothing makes any difference.
Anyone have any clue what I can do about this?
PS. The phone was on rootbox rom (unsure of version) and I'm fairly certain it had siyah kernel.
sorry, posted in the wrong section.
please switch it over, mods
No recovery?

What version were you running? GB, ICS or JB? Which kernel? Did you try to flash tar file? Repartition through Odin?
Sent from my digital submersible hovercraft.
It was running ICS, unsure of exact version.
And I did not try to do anything with odin as the phone is not recognised at all any more, doesn't come up in odin..
and yes, I cannot access recovery mode at all via the 3 button method
Didn't it work with the jig?
Tell us what you can do with your device right now.

as above, I can enter download mode, but absolutely nothing else.

just figured out the problem with it not recognising it via usb, it was a dodgy USB flex that I'd installed to fix a microphone problem (which eventually turned out to not be hardware related).
just swapped back the original board and hey presto, the damn thing is recognised in windows and in odin.
thanks for the help guys

[GUIDE][REF]Basic Trouble Shooting Steps for ODIN FAILURE

So, you've been flashing stuff and now for whatever reason, your phone won't boot.
Now you're trying to save your poor phone's life with Odin but odin keeps failing.
Here are a few basic steps to go over to try and get Odin to cooperate:
First things First, if the device shows no signs of life whatsoever, you press the power button and it just sits there blank,
i am sorry to inform you, you are bricked and at a point beyond the help of odin. this will require JTAG to fix.
if you are in a bootloop or the phone freezes at some point of the boot sequence, this is what odin can fix.
if you do not have odin, get it HERE
here are the USB DRIVERS
i will not provide links to stock firmwares to use, those are ALL OVER the forum,
this is to help get those flashed not to completely hold your hand
only thing i'll add about which to use is:
DO NOT USE A PACKAGE CONTAINING BOOTLOADERS
IF ODIN FAILS DURING THE WRITING OF A BOOTLOADER THAT WILL BRICK THE DEVICE
STEPS:
Use USB ports connected to MOTHERBOARDno front panel ports, hubs etc...
Use a Known good usb data cable preferably OEM, you may want to have 1 or more spare just in case
right click odin and run as administrator
Have odin ready to go before you touch your phoneAll files in the proper place, now boot to DL mode and connect
If this is still Failing try:
Exiti Odin
Uninstall USB drivers
Reboot PC
Reinstall USB drivers
Switch usb port being used on pc
Rinse and Repeat until either it works or all ports exhausted
If after trying all motherboard ports odin is still cursing at you from Asgard, try one of those spare cables i mentioned earlier.
Sometimes PCs just don't wanna work, if you have the availability of another pc ANYWHERE (even the library or something) try these steps on that machine.
If its still failing on multiple pcs, clean out the usb port on the phone with Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol
then blowing it out with compressed air and let dry.
still nothing? you may have a hardware failure in the usb port on the phone.

thank you, you're welcome, Good luck and happy flashing.

Phone stuck
Hi, I'm hoping maybe someone can help me figure out what the problem is.
I'm trying to flash CWM Recovery on GTI9105p. I've actually done this before on the same device, but this time it doesn't work. Odin seems to work fine and shows PASS! after 32 seconds, but my phone stays on "Downloading..." with the blue bar full. If I manually reboot the device and try to go to recovery, it stays on Samsung model logo. Otherwise I can boot the phone just fine. What could be the issue?

[Q] SuperSU Binary Update bricked phone

Updating SuperSU app as suggested through CWM by clicking link on the app. Phone rebooted and stuck at "Samsung". Cannot get into recovery (Power and Vol */- ). Can get into Download to but my SG2 hasn't been able to connect to a PC for a long long time (yeah, switched ports, batteries, cables, and PC's). Doesn't appear that phone wants to charge either. Usually when turned off during charging the battery is partially green and below the battery the dots light up. Now when off and charging battery is gray and rotation swirl doesn't swirl....frozen too. Phone was working without any problems prior to updating the binary (other than not connecting to PC).
Any suggestion appreciated.

The remedy is to flash stock and start over. If you have a bad usb port in the phone, then you probably need to replace that and get usb working so you can flash from Odin. Or send it to a reliable repair shop like Mobile Tech Videos.
I have read a few posts that associate Framaroot and loosing PC connection/usb mass storage on the I77. Any insight on that?

I havn't seen anything about that. Have you read anything about how to fix it? Is this issue supposed to affect hardware or firmware?
Anyway, this should have nothing to do with whether Odin will see your phone. Have you tried to enter download mode with Odin open on the desktop? You need to have "USB driver for Samsung Phones" installed on the pc in order for Odin to recognize the phone when you enter Download mode.
The Framaroot developer responds to this question. I don't understand the inference but maybe you can simplify it for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=43507992#post43507992
You have brought up the changes in firmware since 4.0 to system property /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config. I needed to fix the string but didn't know how. Was on to do list.....procrastination killed my phone.....bummer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2488186
And I can't find the other thread with the post about loosing usb with Framaroot but you gave a thumbs up in this thread (not the specific post). The topic was Framaroot and you were recommending using the apk.
Also, another I777 had the same problem (bootloop) with the SU update( #4327)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053&page=433
By the way, if I can get a computer, ODIN, usb cable and my phone to cooperate, what firmware you recommend I download?

I'd suggest you flash back to the latest stock, ucmd8, unless you are reluctant to use framaroot. Otherwise you could use the stock UCLL6, 4.0.4 plus root package. See the links in my signature. I assume you want something rooted so you can use Mobile Odin to install a custom kernel with CWM recovery, and then flash the firmware of your choice.
I looked at those links, but I didn't find the developer's response. Not enough information to respond to, but interesting to know.
As far as /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config, that is a text file. As long as you have root access, you just open it in a text editor and change the text string, then save the file and reboot.

Bricked S2

Was trying to go from GB 2.3.3 to OmniROM 4.4.4 on a friend’s S2 (GT I-9100).
I rooted using Framaroot (the first version, the latest wouldnt work), got root, checked with RootChecker. Then I tried to install CWM.
Spent hours trying, I wanted to do everything "on device" rather than use Heidal or ADB (use inux on my desktop), tried MobileOdin, but there was no "recovery" option, so tried ROM Manager using a guide ( http://luvis.se/tipstricks/root-and-install-kitkat-on-samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-without-a-computer/ ), but kept failing cos of E signature verification, even though ROM Manager said it was installed.
I d spent hours and hours on the internet looking for how to install, seems its difficult because the device was GB.
So I tried MobileOdin again and just installed the "CWM-KitKatCompatible-i9100.zip" I downloaded from the above guide using the "install update.zip" option, I cancelled it when the warning came up about firmware can brick your device, but then hit "ok" (partly in frustration and partly cos I ve never bricked a device before as I m (USUALLY) always careful).
Now it just boots the the Samsung Galaxy S2 screen, then the screen goes blank after 10 seconds or so. Stupid, stupid me.
So can anyone help me recover it using ADB, Android Studio or maybe Heimdal or direct me to a guide on how to ? Everything I read uses Odin and assumes you can get into recovery. All that time trying to avoid connecting it to a pc and now I ve deffo got to.

Tried One-click Unbrick and it cant connect to device, which reminded me that when I connected it to my (Ubuntu) pc (before I bricked it) I got an error message saying it couldn’t mount Android device (I got rid of my S2 a couple of years ago but it always connected to my pc with no problems). Which seems to me like a real problem - how can I un-brick it if I cant connect via USB ?

First, I don't have any experience with ubuntu, so I would suggest connecting to a windows pc via usb, making sure you install the drivers for the s2, then download odin. Once you have odin setup, I would flash a stock rom .tar from sammobile.com. From there you can flash a kernel such as philz to gain root access, and then omni or other rom.

Heimdal on Ubuntu (or a Mac) will do the same job as Odin on Windows (and is more reliable), but I have this USB problem I mentioned above, so I m not sure anything is going to work if theres a problem with USB on the device (USB debugging was enabled). One-Click Unbrick cannot connect to it and nor can my pc.

Probably obvious, and you've maybe tried already, but will a different usb data cord work? And I would try a different pc just to rule it out.
Here is something to read as well about recovering from soft bricks. Hope it helps -

Mate, the only thing I can suggest is make sure you have drivers for the phone(although the message saying can't mount device indicates a problem like corrupted partitions or nand, rather than missing drivers), and try a different pc. The fact you can get into download mode at least suggests you can flash a kernel or something, but you need a connection to the pc to do that(as you already know). I hope someone else has some other ideas

I wont need drivers as Linux has drivers built into it - it works out of the box, no messing around installing them like with Windows.
I just gotta spend some time getting the firmware and finding instructions on doing it with Heimdall, theres so many versions of the S2 it makes finding the right software complex.
And I ve just got to hope there isnt a problem with the usb port on the device or I m really buggered

Lol, I forgot that on Samsung devices you have to press home as well as power and vol up for recovery, found this out while trying to fins out how to unbrick it !
It wouldnnt boot but it WOULD boot to recovery, CWM recovery !
So flashed a CM kernel then Omni and all is fine, OmniROM installed !
