Hello XDA Developers,
I have an HTC thunderbolt, I'm running Cm7.1, the newest release that came out yesterday. My issue is that wifi or USB tethering do not work. Whether I connect usb tethering and enable the feature from the phone, or enable wifi tethering and connect through my laptop, the network connects, but then says no internet access and/or limited or no connectivity. My laptop connects to wifi internet fine.
I've had this problem for every iteration of CM7 for thunderbolt since June. Before moving to CM7, i remember trying tethering once or twice and it did not work. I've just decided now to try and get tethering working.
I've tried using the wi-fi tether app from code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list as well as barnacle wifi tether, both have the same problem.
My main questions would be:
1. Is there any reason I have overlooked as to why tethering does not work on my phone? Is there some new verizon block to tethering for root users? Are there any settings I could try to get this working?
2. Are there any known issues with CM7 and thunderbolt tethering?
3. It seems weird if it was a hardware issue since my laptop does actually connect to the phone, it just has no network connectivity.
Thanks!
I had a similar issue and fixed it by downloading the open garden wifi tethering app https://market.android.com/details?id=og.android.tether and changing the network to open on that app as well as the built in cm7 app. Then enable both apps and it should connect. Did for me.

Newest release came out about 20 minutes prior to your post CM7.1.1...check the rootz thread.
I've seen reports of this before. If memory recalls correctly, the devices weren't acquiring an IP correctly. Once you have it tethered, on the laptop/device try releasing and renewing your IP or disabling/enabling the adapter.
You are not the only person having this problem. I'm having this problem too and have not found a fix for it yet. I've found a pattern though, any ROM that I've loaded that was a build or based off of CM7, had the tethering problem. And as stated above, the problem about not acquiring and ip correctly is exactly what's happening.
Hopefully a dev or someone else can come along help resolve this problem. Apparently this problem is not very widespread as it seems that very few peeple have this problem.
Thank you everyone for your help.
keith.mcintyre26, I tried your suggestion of open garden wifi app, and it worked perfectly, just installed it and it worked. CM7 wifi tether still does not work though.

Glad to see you found a working solution. This did not work for me... Back to foyo or non CM7 based GB AOSP's...

I tried the app as well and It didn't work I am in a tricky area when it comes to data coverage though so I can't help but think that might be it? Unrelated: Sometimes I lose data coverage altogether (drops out, comes back, drops out, etc) when I'm in 4G coverage areas. Maybe the two are related,

I know this is not the problem where I live as I'm in full signal.
I just got onto this ROM, after being on BAMF Forever, forever, and LOVE IT. My only complaint and possibly a show-stopper -- Wi-Fi Tether doesn't work, and neither does the built-in tether app.
I've done a complete wipe. The client connects, but doesn't DHCP.
Any ideas?

Quick update -- Open Garden works...
Strange... But I guess I'm all set
I had/have the same problem with cm7 and bamf1.86. I finally got cm7 tether last night using barnacle, but it was at .3 mbs. I have yet to top 1mbs. That was with 4g(or so it said.) I have tried the included wifi tether, usb tether, barnacle, and open garden. Nothing works properly on either rom. Signal was between -80 and at worst -90.

Seems to be a common issue across newer roms lately for wifi tether.
I got mine fixed by downloading the newest experimental build.
Once installed go into settings, Check Disable wake lock, check wifi driver reload, also check routing fix. Furthermore, make sure you select the proper device, should be the first option once you open settings.
So I thought it would be great to compile a list of hotsxpot issues. The primary one that I see is that it simply wont. Initiate. Im running cleanrom 2.2 and am a paying hotspot user. It will activate after turning wifi on and off a few times. Ive reinstalled the kernal thatcame with the rom several times but it hasnt come close to fixing the issue. Does anyone know of any advances with the wifi hotspot? I ve also tried the free tether(both open gardxen and wifi tether 3.1) and I get the adhoc error, the essid error, and one more error. Well guys, post your thoughts and lets figured out how to get us fully hacked lol!
Has anyone had issues with the HTC Media Link HD? Everytime I connect to it I am bombarded with "Data Call Failure: Error Code 67 Unable to establish wireless data conection." I can't access any internet related apps, yet I can still text and do calls. I am not connect to a wireless router, I am using wifi direct connect. Can someone try replicating this problem by connecting to the media link directly and let me know if you are getting the same error? Sprint was unable to help me with this and they even had me reset my phone so much that I lost all data connectivity and had to do two complete resets to get my data profiles to come back, yet I am still getting the persistent error code 67. All help will be appreciated.
~Seechay
Edit: After I got my data back, I attempted the media link again. I was able to get the internet working. Then I rooted the phone and found out that I know am getting the data call failure error. Does anyone have any idea why the root might be messing with my data connection?
Bump! Please if anyone has any insight at all =/
Does no one have any idea or a similar problem?
i am having the EXACT same problem as you. just picked up my media link device tonight and started toying around w/ it. sadly i have no solution at the current time.
I'm gonna make a backup and see what I can find. I've got one too. How did you guys set up WiFi direct? I'll go play around in that menu and try to figure it out.

i didn't mess with wifi direct. i let the media link app do all the configurations.
Alright, I'm ready to start diagnosing your guys' issues. I only used my home WiFi and never connected directly to the Media Link HD receiver, so I set that up and then disconnected. I am in a basement (that's where my room is), so I frequently get data drops but I always reconnected after a few minutes or just going upstairs. So, are you in a poor signal area? Have you updated your profile and PRL? Maybe try rebooting? Have you updated the Media Link to its latest firmware? I don't know what to tell you, as I tried switching between both methods of connecting to the Media Link box and couldn't replicate a complete loss of data; mine always came back on. I'm running the latest viperROM, if that makes a difference, but it shouldn't.
Edit: Hold up. When connecting directly to the Media Link's network, you lose all internet connectivity, as the phone's WiFi is connected to an internetless network, but still, you should reconnect to 3G no problem after turning off WiFi. I get the error message a couple times, but my 3G always comes back on.

When it's getting the error 67 code, its trying to enable the hotspot feature on the phone for some reason. Since you don't have it active, its erroring out.

Do you know if there is a Fix? I am wondering if I root this beast and do the Sprint Hotspot hack (If it is even available) if that would fix it.
I was out of town all weekend so I have a lot of catching up to do on the forums.
I'm having the same problem. After 30 minutes on the phone with Sprint, now I have zero data connection. Looks like it hard reset time or get a replacement.
Phone was working fine for 2 days.

The more I look around on the internet the more I think this is some kind of bug, I contacted HTC support last night hopefully they will have some idea.
I also tried running ruu lastnight and that didn't fix it, so it is either a hardware issue or software bug, and I have found no reports of direct connect media link and 3g working. So I am leaning towards a bug. Hopefully if we bug HTC enough they can fix it.

Not to rain on you guys, but my data still works after using direct connect. I got the same error acouple times because the network from the media link box has no internet, but after disconnecting, I always regained my data. Try going outside to get better reception?

I had full signal strength the entire time I was on the phone.
Hard reset fixed it of course.
Hopefully if it happens again, it will happen within my 14 window.
My 3g works while connected to media link now!
I modified the build.prop, to enable tether once I could use the sprint tether app without error 67 media link started working

Can you enlighten me on your setup? I am rooted and s off via lazy panda running the latest MeanRom. I'm trying to use WiFi tether to connect my hd media link and have 3g access. Were you successful in doing so? This would be handy when wanting to stream via 3g when wifi is not available. Thanks for your help!

I am running stock Rom right now. I did the build.prop mod to enable wifi tether. I kept getting error 67 I tried a number of things and sometimes I would get it to work for a little bit then stop so far nothing seems to work. I have tried working with HTC support and haven't had much luck. I am hoping to Flash Flex360 rom to see if that will solve this problem. since it has the wifi hotspot fix. I have confirmed that if the Sprint hotspot is working (not error 67) then media link works fine.
Interesting to see they swapped out phone, HTC told me the feature wasn't supported.

I got the build prop edited. As we speak I'm using 3g and media link hd. I can confirm 100% hotspot its required when direct link is used. I did get the data error a few times, but I'm unsure why. I'll keep testing. Let us know your results with the 360 rom. Thanks for the tip!
Seems to be working now, It worked, then I rebooted and it is still working, I did update firmware and radio

I had this same problem last week. I'm not sure what causes it. Check in settings/about/phone identity and look at the "current username". I had a bunch of jibberish in there. It should show your sprint email address. Turn off Wifi and update your profile. hopefully should fix it. Mine didn't fix it, I ended up running the RUU back to stock then it reset with the profile update.
Hi,
Like many others I've had issues with WiFi staying connected since using the jellybean leaks. I had the same with CM10, but if I go back to a stock ICS rom then it works fine. if I reverted back to any jellybean rom then again it will not stay connected.
For me the issue is fixed by change the security on the router from WPA/WPA2 auto to just WPA. With this it connects every time. If I set my router to use WPA2 then again it drops all the time, so it would seem that is has an issue with WPA2.
Maybe others want to give this a test to see if it works for them. Currently I am using DLH6 stock leak.
Maybe this has been posted elsewhere but I thought I would share my findings.
Cheers.
Not working for me. Wifi drops when I move away from the router

Confirmed here.
Im using a beta version of Omega v15 based on DLH6.
I could not connect to wifi no matter what I did.
tried router reboots, changing wifi channel etc.
The status when connecting showed:
- Authenticating (normal)
- Obtaining IP Address (normal)
- Saved, Secured (should show connected)
This repeats several times, before eventually the status shows
Network disabled. Poor connection.
I then tried configuring static IP
This time it connects for a fraction of a second then disconnects and instead of the message 'Network disabled. Poor connection', now it shows:
'Temporarily avoiding poor connection'
I then tried installing different kernels - no improvement.
The only solution that worked was configuring network as WPA only.

Have you tried to forget the network and add it again after changing to WPA?

Here's my fix go back to ics
I get absolutly no connection.. :crying:
From what I've read these tips might also help:
- Change WiFi channel to a free one
- Disable 5Ghz wifi on your router
- Disable 802.11n on you rrouter, just use 802.11g
Hopefully Samsung fixes these issues before releasing official 4.1.1
With the leaked JB stock rom my Wi-Fi works fine. However, with anything related to AOKP or CM10 I now cannot connect at all. It worked previously but something has changed in the last 10days to stop it. I flashed the leaked initial leaked JB stock rom and that's when the problems started when I went back to CM10.
I have a Netgear DGN2000, WNDR3700v2 and also edimax range extender. It prompts me for the password, tries to connect but then just saves the config without connecting. Tried with/without 5g, g only etc.. still no joy.

Use Odin to flash a stock ics Rom and that will fix the WiFi problems on cm10

I tried all solutions that are mentioned here. But I always get disconnected when I move away. I'm at 100% ICS stock rom (updated through KIES today) and still not solved.
Going to bring it back tomorrow and hope to get a replacement or a fix by samsung.
IMO:
your modem changed when you flashed the leak Rom. Easy way to fix You must flash modem through or odin or cwm. or any stock ROM via odin.
(nothing to do with your WiFi router.)
Have you guys tried updating the firmware of your router?
no problems for me.
using Omega v14 (XXDLH4)
Baseband (XXLH1)
Connecting fine with (WPA, WPA2, WEP)
If the problem is with the modem guys, why not use another modem or the one previously used in stock ICS?
How will a modem help WiFi when WiFi is a product of the kernel ??

I have no idea. I just made that suggestion because I saw the other guys discussing using a different modem.
Anyways. The kernel I'm using is the one that came with OMEGA rom, which is the stock kernel that came with the LH4 firmware.
Just to say that this wifi 'speed fix' actually fixes this connection issue for me

Hi, I am also getting this problem. Have you tried flashing a stock rom through ODIN and then install CM9 or any other AOSP rom as suggested by Brian 6685. Does that fix the problem?
I recently upgraded to Lollipop and I am rooted. Everything has been working just fine.
I moved into a new place and upgraded to the ASUS RT-N66U and now everything works except my phone. I have tried everything:
Disabling IPv6 on the router
Writing a script to disable IPv6 on my S4
Using several apps that claim to disable IPv6
and everything fails.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Please help.

I have a very similar problem. Everything was going fine and then one day my phone just stopped transmitting WIFI data. It will say it is connected but i can not get anything to load. I'm also rooted and running the 1545VRUGOC1 build. One day it was all good and then the next day it was useless. Sorry i do not have any help for ya but hopefully someone may have an idea.
Update. I went into my root browser and then went into \data\misc\wifi. I found the file wpa_ supplicant.conf and then i changed the priority of my ssid to 1. I also found a ssid i didn't recognize so I deleted it as well. My wifi is now working properly again. Im not sure i went about it the right way but its fixed non the less.
