[Q] Google Voice app alternatives - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Google Voice is an amazing service. I had the GNex on Verizon, and switched to T-Mo with the Nexus 4. When switching, I ported my number to Google Voice, since I loved all the functionality of the service. What I didn't factor in was how atrocious the Google Voice app for Android is. It's super slow, freezes commonly, and ugly. It's hardly usable for sending and receiving SMS messages, and I text a lot, so that's important. I tried the GV Integration app (seen here), and it is nothing but buggy, making my phone unstable and not displaying notifications.
Does anybody have functional alternatives to the Google Voice app? Remember, Google Voice has my phone number now, and I do have to use the service.

Can't believe you find voice that buggy. I use it almost exclusively for any text I ever send. Have no problem with lag at all unless I am on a less than consistent network. Runs smooth for me every time I ever open it. Can't ever recall a crash. It isn't the prettiest interface granted, but for functionality I don't know of any better. I know all the isheep I know use that whats app. I believe you can get that on our platform. Then you will be just like all the other iclones.

I wish I could understand what you were saying, but I truly can't. I don't have any crashing, just lagginess using the official Google Voice app, compared to the normal messaging app. Your last two sentences though...I'm lost.

I agree, Theowb4. I wish there were a good way to integrate GV with the native JB messaging app or that GV would polish their app a little more. It's alright (and not having used it a lot, I haven't really noticed it being too laggy), but I think the JB app is more functional and better looking.

Honestly, I had a rom with my sprint phone I couldn't get the sprint voicemail to work with. I eventually got so annoyed at how unpolished GV was that I went back to stock.. LOL Now I'm so bored with stock I'm determined to get my VTT working again.

I'm currently using Fusion Messenger https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=im.fsn.messenger and it's still in public beta. It's one of the better ones I seen.

I'm not sure about 4" compatibility, but "Messaging + Google Voice" by DREAMBIG, INC has been great on my Nexus 7. I'd link to play store but I'm too new for links ><

Agreed. It works better and looks nicer. It comes with a popup reply box and fixes one of my biggest problems with Google Voice by combining all the threads, so you have one thread for each contact. It also grabs all text history, which many apps can't seem to do (read somewhere that it's because Voice doesn't have an API).

Starting with 7/12 nightlies, the stock messaging app can be configured to send GV messages on CM 10.1

I am actually researching the best alternatives for Google Voice. If only the Google Voice Team can be successful as the Google Chrome team, then this world would be better. Google Voice needs so much work I don't know where to begin, seriously.

The best thing about google voice is probably that you can call for free (I bet you didnt know that ) just look on youtube for the guy thats called "gigafide" (tinkernut) and than something with google voice
If this helped you please hit thanks

I solely use Google Voice and have done so for 3 years now. I have issues with it daily freezing hanging up crashing. I have used it on every phone I've had on 3 different carriers and consistently have the same issue with the app. My number is a Google voice number and I'd really hate to lose that. I've been fed up with the app for at least a year. However, I love the concept and don't really want to change my number.
Another thing I do not understand is why there is Google Voice and Hangouts. Why two separate apps for basically the same service? Even more strange to me is how come there is no GV/Hangouts integration? My phone has an actual number tied to it from Verizon and that number and the default messaging app DOES integrate with Hangouts, but not Google's own SMS/Voice app?
I am a number 1 Google fanboy, they have really, completely dropped the ball with Google Voice.

Weird. I've never had any issues with Google Voice freezing or not working right on any of my phones (I go through a lot) on any update or rom (I am a serial flasher - typically 2-5 roms per week - or when I switched carriers. *shrug* Just one of those things I guess. I agree it would be nice if they integrated it in Hangouts, though it was talked about a few months ago, doesn't seem like it's quite there yet:

I don't understand it honestly. In 4 years I've had the Evo 4g, S3, S4, Note 3 and between those phones I've had Sprint, US Cellular and Verizon. The common problem is with the Google Voice app. Whether trying to open the app or go back to the main "text" screen from an opened message or when trying to open a message the app will freeze and most times the screen goes black for up to 2 minutes before it finally craps out and asked me to "Send an error report or close" the app. I could use it for 2, 3, 4 days etc...without problem then for no reason when I do any of those things I have the problem...to this day!

[Q] Skype alternative?

I used to use Fring but that was just complete crap as far as call quality went... so, i've been using Skype lately.
the problem with Skype is that the call quality is still a bit "crappy" here & there + the latest update keeps pestering me to re-install it at least once a day(wtf?)
is there anything else out there that i can use on my Thunderbolt that has decent call quality, call land lines as well as get a phone # assigned to me for people to call me?
I use Tango and Qik all the time. They both work well.

i didn't bother with Qik as i'm not interested in video calling & Tango says it's a "free" app that's for making calls to other Tango users.
thanks for trying though.

If you have a google voice number and account then look at GrooveIP. i suggest you be in strong 3G or 4G coverage for it to work well
Google talk. Its free, better Quality then skype and works with every rom, can use wifi OR data. Search for gtalk 1.3 dowloader in market.
Google voice is free, as good of quality as my regular verizon line. Sets up on your celly, lets you choose which line to use to make calls, and you can foward your cell number to your gvoice vvmail box so you dont have to check 2 vm box's

It sounds like google voice is what your looking for, if you use gmail, google +, voice and talk all work together in your gmail act. Which just makes things so much easier. And its all free. You need separate apps to do each thing on your phone for now, but im hoping they integrate them all into g+ soon.

i ended up finding that gtalk via a google search and downloaded it from here. i tried to install it but apparently it isnt for AOSP ROMs.
as for google voice, i just tried that but it seems its just a voicemail management system and for making international calls. both i dont care to do.
oh well. ;(
I use it as my normal number all the time. I have a cali celly number but live in colo, so my gvoive number is my local colo number which i use all the time.

sorry but, when i installed it it was asking about managing my voicemail & then asking if i wanted it set as the default device for making international calls. it then dropped me into some sort of inbox and there were no call options anywhere. i did a google search on it but i just found info on how to use it on your desktop. i guess i'll have to attempt to find more information on the app. i just wish it was more user-friendly.
p.s. noticed a lot of negative feedback on it in market complaining about it being an unfinished app.

I think its pretty user friendly I've been using it since its inception and idk if they still do but Google had a long video about how to use it in there website. I would suggest setting the Google voice account up from a computer first and then integrating the app

i got Google Voice up & running yesterday & had been using it to make/receive a few calls. i just checked my minute usage though it seems Google Voice DOES use your minutes(confirmed it on google's site also).
Apparently there's a trick to actually getting it for free but requires downloading a few other apps from market and registering on some gizmo5 website(that seems to be down).
so itseems Skype is my best choice after all.

Same here +1 google voice. You can create a "voice mail only" account and not worry about available numbers.
Youmail Old version works well for me.

If you don't want GVoice or the other mentioned app, AT&T released "AT&T Messages" to cover visual voicemail. Search for it in the marketplace.
I would not use the at&t messages app because it is extremely slow and had major lag issues on the thrill I had. The idea is ok but the follow through is poor.
Add my recommendation to the list lol.
Google Voice
Followed the recommendations and Google voice wins by far.
The only thing is how do you set up a custom message for missed calls?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using XDA App
you have to log in thru the google voice website and set it up thru there
Another Google Voice recommendation. 9 times out of 10 you just read the transcript and that's it, no need to even listen to the voicemail. Works great, and you can even get voice mail audio and transcripts emailed to you, so even if your phone is off or you left it at home, as long as you can check emails you won't miss any messages.
how do you set up google voice to work with AT&T? I thought you couldn't set it up on AT&T and always select "skip" when I get to voicemail set up..

Nope, use the automatic setup in the GV app - worked fine on my Aria a year and a half ago, worked on my SGS2 a couple days ago, but had to enable, switch back to att voicemail in the calls menu, then switch back to GV immediately. Not sure why it took 2 trys to take on the sgs2.

Yep, google voice is the winner in my book as well. Even though the transcriptions are horribly mangled sometimes, you can usually get the gist of things pretty easily.

Google voice text app laggy

I love my RAZR overall, it's the best phone I've ever had. But nothing is perfect, and so it is also with my RAZR. Right out of the box, Google voice app has been real laggy. When I press the icon to start the app, it doesn't start up right away but tends to freeze for a second or two. Then, when I send text messages, about 30% of the time I get an error and the message sits there in queued up but not sending.
Does anyone else have these problems with Google Voice on their RAZR? I use my Google Voice for all my text messaging and this problem is really annoying.

I'm going to see if using a different launcher will help. Trying out Launcher Pro free version.
Google Voice also launches REALLY slowly for me - running stock.
Can anyone on ICS confirm if this still happens on any of the leaks?
All of my messages have been sent, though.
I can confirm this happens to me as well on GO Launcher EX.

I consider that normal performance with GV, which seems to get worse with each update. Were you using an older, faster, and less buggy version of GV on your last phone?
it worked perfect on my Xperia Play I had prior to the Razr and my LG Ally before that.
Now it's so buggy I am using the regular text messaging instead. Sucks, because I have zero signal in my office. I guess I'll just sign into GoogleVoice on my desktop browser.

Visual Voicemail and Dialer Combo

Hey all.
So the tweaking to get my HTC ONE just right continues...
The latest annoyance is the delivery of visual voicemail. I have the AT&T Visual Voicemail App but it is inconsistent (in terms of updating) and a pain to switch over to it for my voicemail messages. I came over from the iPhone bandwagon and got really spoiled with some of the amenities on that side of the fence - VV integrated into the Dialer is one of them.
Anyone come across a Mod to get the Dialer and a VV integration? The dialer itself is kind of a pain, so I wouldn't mind replacing the whole dialer interface if that's an option.
I am Rooted and Running Android Revolution HD for HTC One.
Thanks in advance.
Its programmed differently so probably not possible with stock launcher. I havent had any problems with the notifications though and have a shortcut for it on my homescreen so really not that big of a deal once ya get used to it.
Sent from my HTC One using xda premium
don't know if it's going to be possible with stock Sense and the AT&T VVM, however on CM10.1 you can get Google Voice integration into the dialer call log.

i THINK it's working okay now. i called it from a friend's phone and did get my GVoicemail box.

This is what I did too, but the problem is Google Voice is not popping notifications when a voicemail is received. My old phone (SGS2) used to do this, I still haven't found a solution.
I just recently tried out att messages. It's not horrible and you can turn off it notifying you of txt messages and still use the stock sms app.

Best personal assitant "siri" style app for android?

Does anyone here use these kind of apps? I saw a couple posts for utter and speaktoit but they were short lived. I have browsed the internet but it seems like every site recommends a different on. I don't really want to go through the process of trying/learning every one to find the best one. I might do that with 2 or 3, but I would like to narrow it down to those 2 or 3 first.
One thing I would really like to have is the ability to set reminders just by speaking to the app. Things like pick up billy from soccer at 5:00, or pay the bills on Monday and have it put those in the calendar or a to do app or whatever and then have it send me a reminder on those days or times.

Dragon used to be Vlingo I believe which i heard used to be top dog, and while I haven't heard of Dragon getting worse, most of the reviews I have read have putt varying other apps ahead of it. I'm using the jellybean sandwich rom, which is CM9 based, so I don't think I have access to the latest version of google now. But when I was using it, I never really got it, or learned how to use it effectively. Although it was pretty awesome when it told me to leave for work early in the morning because there was a lot of traffic
there are ways to get google now on cm9 but its easier to update your rom. i've been using JamieD81's unofficial cm10.2 and just flashed cm10.2 nightly and both have been really stable so far
My only issues with Dragon is that it's a huge app once the voice files download - and it uses a ton of RAM on standby even when I don't use it to alert me regarding messages. Also it does not speak much; It's better at providing search results...

I was thinking about trying his new 4.3 pacman rom, but I always hated how JB roms always seemed to random reboot when I was sending texts. I do have google now on my CM9 rom, it's just an older version and the play store says I can't update. But does google now allow me to tell it to set a reminder and then have it remind me.
Assistant does that, although it seems to store the reminders internally rather than put them on the calendar as well.
every other jb rom i've used always had random reboots but so far with wit the new 4.2 i've had no reboots.
you can set reminders with google now 2 ways. time based or location based and it will send a notification. i like the location based because you can say remind me to buy milk when i'm near the store and will send a notification. it also doesn't store to the calendar and they dont make it very convenient to view upcoming reminders. if you want to add to calendar you can add calendar events instead of reminders.

I always thought that would be a good idea to be able to set reminders like "buy milk" and have it go off when you were by a store, didn't realize google now could do that. I'm on a 4.3 rom now, not sure if I will stay with it cause it does have some issues, but I do have google now, so maybe I should learn how to use it. How does it handle the location based reminders. Do you have to tell it what location to remind you at or will it go off any "store" that in theory sells milk?
