[Q] Internal memory 4GB - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Today I bought an SGSII... the last owner upgraded it to 4.1.2 but the internal memory became 4 GB instead of 16 GB (11,5).
After some research I found that he flashed the ROM with an wrong .PIT file. Everyone said to flash a stock ROM 4.0.4 with an older version of .PIT file. Can anyone make a quick tutorial about this, noobie version please...or just post the files needed, including the firmware, kernel, PIT file etc?
P.S.: I'v searched the forum, I found some posts about this problem, but is kinda annoying because I didn't found a step by step tutorial + files, and I don't want to brick my phone )

Spoon feeding is not allowed here so I recommend doing some more research. This may be slower then been spoon fed but it honestly is the best way to learn.
To avoid brick DO NOT wipe data in stock 4.0.4 recovery and make sure you flash the correct pit file.

And even if we was to give you links to files how on earth would we do that when you don't even bother to give any relevant info like what model your S2 is? Not only do you want spoon feeding but you want us to use magic powers.

I've read a thing or two about pit files, just for kicks. Took me like 2 hours total.
It's day one for you and your device, you gotta spend at least 2 days reading about repartition, maybe watch a couple of videos.
PIT files are dangerous to play with, you really gotta know what you're doing.
My advice is enjoy your new device (you've got 4 GB of internal space, you can afford it for a week, for a month) and while you at it, read about these snicky files.
Also had a meme for this:

Didn't say anything about Odin, me & Odin...we cool. Now pit files...trust me, you don't wanna mess with them until you're completely sure. There are too many people bricking their devices flashing pit files like you flash modems.
As I said, enjoy your new device first (and it's a hell of a device), meanwhile, you could stick your teeth into the repartition world.
Good luck.

Help! possible brick 4.0

I was trying to do a full reset of my GP 4.0 that has been sitting around for a little and when i tried to flash the stock firmware in ODIN it kinda sat there and then the player rebooted. FYI I was on a custom ROM and kernel.
So where I am now is that the player will turn on and it shows a connect to computer action and it won't go any further than that.
It is recognized in ODIN but I don't know what to do so any help would be appreciated.
this is the screen:

Okay. Yes, that is the brick screen, but don't panic. We need details: was the custom ROM gingerbread based, or cyanogen-mod based? Were you running on ext4 or still on rfs? Just what stock ROM package were you using?

Exactly what custom ROM were you on? Does your stock rom only have zImage and factoryfs, or is it a complete package? Have you re-tried flashing it? You didn't check, repartition, did you? DO NOT try anything with repartition yet. Did you follow a guide?

i have the SAME problem!
i was running Icy Fusion ROM with TerraSilent kernel, do you know how to fix it?
Because i'm really worried right now.
Okay, when you flash the stock rom with Odin, does it say pass or fail? Or does it just hang? I have found that if it fails or hangs, just plugging it into a different USB port and trying again can help. Try every USB port on your PC. Also, are you using a "regular" stock ROM with just the zImage and factoryfs.rfs, or are you trying to use zaclimon's full recovery?

Hmm, no, the brick screen is a form of download (ODIN) mode. I would guess you have something wrong with your PC setup. Have you successfully used Odin before, and if so have you changed anything since then? I would suggest reinstalling the kies driver, and if that still doesn't help, try using heindmall. Did you try using different USB ports on your PC?

If nothing is recognizing your player, that probably also means you have PC issues. Reinstall kies drivers, and one more thing is make sure you use the original cable. Some third party USB cables don't work with Odin for some reason.

Hi, sorry for such a late reply!
I really don't know, if you are sure you have the kies drivers correctly installed. Have you messed around with heindmall? Because if I recall, setting up heindmall will make Odin not recognize your player. To fix it I had to uninstall something in heindmall. Sorry if this makes no sense, but this was a year ago when I did this, so I can't remember it well.

Well, I wouldn't worry about it to much, as long as you are 100% sure you are using a ROM compatible with your device, if you have a backup available, and you have a good Odin setup. And make sure you are 100% sure you know what you are doing

I posted the same response in a different thread. But have you tried running "heimdall close-pc-screen"? I ran in to the same situation where I got that logo, and power cycling the player didn't help. heimdall close-pc-screen got rid of it for me. YMMV of course.

Gonna Flash a PIT File! WHICH ONE??

So I've bricked my SGSIII. Tried to flash genuine firmware. didn't worked. Goes into the Download Mode and does NOT Goes into the Recovery Mode. I've seen 5 files in the SamMobile Firmware.
GT-I9300_mx_20120220.pit
GT-I9300_mx_20120322.pit
GT-I9300_mx_20120329.pit
M0_20120220.pit

Yes, you can brick your device. I said which one is proper for your phone to avoid any errors while flashing 16Gb model of i9300. But if you don't have a knowledge about pit's and you even don't know which one to use than better live repartition options to someone else or don't touch this at all for your own safety. But stop asking if you are not listening the answers.
You asking about .pit but I suppose you have no idea which type of Rom it should be flashed with if you are trying to resurrect your phone.
i9.0.1.3k galaxy imperator
I9300XXBLG8_I9300OXABLG8_I9300XXLH1_HOME.tar.md5
This was the firmware grabbed directly from KIES during an update, so that would be same CSC, I9300OXABLG8.
And yesterday i reflashed the same firmware with the mentioned .pit.
I won't say that i'm sure it will work for you, since i'm not in a position to be sure, but it seems the only difference between us is the color of the phone.
Also i had messed up my partitions, but CWM was working for me partly. So slightly different situation.
Personally i would try to reflash CWM first. And if it doesn't boot in recovery still, then try to repartition and flash the original firmware.
By the way, just to correct myself, mine is also 'unbranded'. I meant it as in 'from uk' in the previous post
How about given ppl some info,like how and why u SEMI-bricked your phone.rom,kernel and what did u do to try to solve it..repartitioning is the last resort to turn to.
First try and flash a recovery(cwm) with odin(eg.with "toolkit v5") and flash a rom from that.
If that doesn't work,then flash the 3 files PDA,modem,csc from odin(when finished flashing,the phone will boot and this can take 10min to boot).
NOW if these attempts fail,then u can try repartitioning..
But why are u flashing your 600$ phone without reading on how to repair a soft-brick.it is very easy to repair after some reading.there is detailed info everywhere on xda.
Just Google: flash with odin,galaxy gs3 soft(semi)-bricked..
So the key to repair your phone is google...
Guys I already have tonnes of posts by me for the same purpose. I have tried every single thing that could resurrect this phone. I haven't flashed the PIT File yet. And yes i don't know much about it but I have been searching the XDA forums and I found no solid answer. Many people ended up in bricks and got there motherboards replaced by Samsung just by flashing the wrong PIT File. That is why I asked this because I don't wanna risk my phone. I have even tried replacing the NAND Memory (Consider my old posts). This too hasn't fixed it.
I'm not a noob that much but I do know somethings and don't know some too!
Thought I'd add to this rather than start a new thread...
Could do with a bit of advice...my phone battery died overnight and when I plugged it in to recharge and start it up again it wouldn't get past the Samsung start screen...
I managed to reflash it with the latest 9300 stock and then flashed again with Miui India...
Everything ok until it started restoring my messages when it decided to reboot and now it cant get into anything other than upload mode...
The PIT looks like it needs flashed...I've a UK i9300, 32GB and could do with a pointer or 2...sammobile.com is down at the minute (bad gateway), is there anywhere i can get the firmware to try and to fix it?

I had the same thing. Phone was charging - next minute it was stuck on boot screen. Tried everything to restore but nothing worked. Like you would only boot into d/l menu but Odin wouldnt do anything. I took it to Sammy service centre who diagnosed dead battery. Completely dead - no cells working!. They said they would replace battery and reflash but today now saying they cant do this and phone is getting sent to samsung now. No doubt in my mind that this is all caused by catastrophic battery failure but I bet its screwed the mobo also. My phone was rooted but running stock os. Fingers crossed they repair or replace.

For anyone reading this unhelpful post, DO NOT TRY FLASHING A PIT, it will brick your phone.
For some reason Odin doesn't work well if you use PIT with one-part rom. I had a similar problem, my friend flashed rom for totally other phone but luckily he had an /efs backup and working download mode (flashing normal rom failed with anything else than bootloader, probably changed partition table).
Pit and 1-part rom didn't work as well, so I went back to 4.0.X and flashed 3-part rom with a pit file... and guess what. It worked, it literally bringed back whole the system, only /efs content was missing so I restored his efs backup and revived his phone.
Luckily one of my polish folks prepared such 3-part rom.

If everything else fails you can try (on your own risk!) to flash above 3-part rom with a pit included and re-partition ticked. It flashes very old XXALEF (4.0.X) without sudden death fix and should be only used when you really need to repartition your phone. If you pass such flashing immediately flash something newer, f.e. XXEMG4.

[Q] [HELP] International S3 has a problem beyond my knowledge.

Greetings.
I know this forum can get quite annoyed with posts being repeated and the same question being asked many times over.
I would just like to say that I have searched this forum for the problem I have, however either the posts are beyond my knowledge or not directly related to my issues. If I have missed something please let me know.
First things first. My phone.
I have an International Samsung Galaxy S3
It is running Stock JellyBean 4.1.1 (O2 UK)
It has been rooted with Odin. (I only rooted because I wanted to use Titanium Backup). It has been rooted successfully for about 3 weeks.
I wish I could give the exact firmware and other figures but I can't access them on my phone.
The Problem
Today whilst working at my desk I decide to check my phone but when I look at it there is a message being displayed that states "Encryption Failed". There is some text saying that I need to factory reset my phone and then, below that is a reset button. I press the reset button, the phone reboots to exactly the same screen. I press it again... And again... And again.
Now it boots into CWM-based recovery. Figuring I don't want to screw this phone up further without finding out what the problem is, i restart the phone again. Now the phone just boots into the Samsung logo and then reboots and so the cycle continues.
I have no idea how this happened, it was so random and unexpected.
What should I do?
The good points
I can still get into CWM-Recovery
From reading previous posts I have downloaded Samsung toolkit but its well beyond my capabilities.
The bad points
I haven't a clue what to do
Having only just switched to android and learnt the basics about rooting, I really need some assistance with this problem.
Please, please, if there is anyone on XDA who can help point me in the right direction I would forever be grateful.

Thank you. I will look into how to do that. I've only ever rooted, never flashed any kind of ROM. I apologise for my noobness.
The one good thing about this is that I certainly will learn a lot more about my phone in a short space of time.
I will update when I have tried this.
Also will the 'backup and restore' or 'reboot recovery' in CWM be of any use?
Thanks again.

If you made a backup when you rooted with cwm recovery, then I would try to restore it 1st.

Unfortunately I didn't make a backup in CWM, so I cannot restore (I'll be sure too next time though).
Thanks for your suggestion.
Just to update.
Now the phone just gets stuck on the Samsung glowing screen and doesn't keep restarting. I still have access to CWM.
I'm still searching for the Official Jelly Bean ROM to download for my phone.

I've found the ROM which i relevant to my phone, i think (I9300XXDLIB)
Just to ask, I'm not needing to download any firmware? Different firmware versions were the major results i found when searching. I wouldn't be able to tell you what firmware I'm on, other than to say its Stock o2 UK firmware, whatever that maybe.
Thanks again for the replies.
UPDATE:
I just used odin to try and install the new ROM but it failed.

Ok.. After that first try failure I've noticed the phone doesn't even get past the Samsung Galaxy s3 boot screen.
I still have access to CWM through pressing the right buttons.

Mate I am no expert myself !, just trying to point in right directions. I am wondering if you should do factory reset from recovery before flashing again , anyone else advise please

Alright alright, let's start with some basic stuff here.
1)- Do you have a micro sd card in there? And a card reader to read/write content to it from your PC? (We can use this to flash another ROM directly from CWM).
2)- Did you enter download mode when attempting to flash with ODIN? (Powerdown + Home + Power button)?
Everyone should follow the layout of the first post when asking for help, makes it way easier for people to understand and help.

Hi,
1) Yes I have a micro SD card, which I can use to place files on from my PC.
2) Yes, I entered download mode when flashing to from Odin (The screen with the warning about installing custom software). I clicked ok, and then Odin detected my phone.
I'm currently downloading PDA:I9300XXDLIH & CSC:I9300O2UDLI3 as I'm aware the last ROM could have been the wrong one.
Any assistance would greatly appreciated.
Hope all goes well mate , skander1998 will have much more knowledge than I

If ODIN doesn't work after all, download Android Revolution or any other stock based ROM, place it in your external SD card, and flash it from CWM, Factory reset and that should work.

[Q] Defective NAND after 50% - any uses for it?

I have a Galaxy S3 16GB, and it seems I have been hit by the sudden death bug.
Phone got into a bootloop after 6 months of usage.
I did a KIES Firmwar recovery, and it failed at 60%.
I assume the NAND is defective there and cannot be written.
I just now tried to flash the 4.1.2 stock ROM through odin, and it fails again after flashing ca. 50% of system.img
Any idea of how this could be still remedied somehow?
eg. repartitioning to only use 8GB?

How??
Kies stops after 60%, and Odin also stops after flashing 50% of system.img!!
It seems as if both cannot write past a defective NAND sector!!

First, stay calm. When you write things like "How brah???!!! IT NOT WORKING!!!!!" it just feels like you're attacking me verbally. Which I most certainly hope you're not.
Now. Check these few steps, then report back:
Do you have all necessary drivers installed?
Is your device fully charged?
Are you using USB 2.0 or 3.0?
What operating system are you using?
When flashing via Odin: Is Kies completely shut down? (No processes must be running!)
Are you flashing a ROM which is designed for your device?
What version of Android were you using before this happened?
Do you have a custom recovery installed?
Answer these questions before you start speculating.

No need. It's happened so often to me..
Sammys are pretty much un-brickable. I've seen one entire person in the XDA-forums that has managed to brick his device and that, that got me scared.
But.. nah. I've pulled the battery in the middle of a flash via Odin and recovery, I've pulled out the USB cable while flashing and nothing has ever happened.
But what I guess this guy's doing wrong is either using USB 3.0, or Kies is open in the background, where it shouldn't be. In fact, it shouldn't be anywhere on the hard drive :laugh:

Thanx for your answer.
Sure I do not want to attack you
And I am quit calm, as I have a seconds S3, that I am using right now.
It would be just a waste if the first one could not be revived.
so here the answers:
1) Yes, all drivers installed (just rooted my seconds s3 with the same odin install und computer)
2) fully charged
3) USB2
4) WinXP
5) yes, no process is left (killed kies and kiestray before)
6) yes (GT-I9300)
7) 4.1.1
8) not any more. Kies FW recovery has overwritten it with stock recovery

No worries, I'm always glad to help
Wait.. Are you German? (The 'und' gave it away.)
But in the meantime:
Ok. Looking at what you've written, try going into recovery (Stock will do, I guess) and try wiping the entire device. Cache, Data, everything it allows you to wipe.
Once you've done that, go to your computer and hit WIN+R, so that a window like this turns up:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Then you can type the command that is in the picture
Hit enter and go to 'startup' and 'services'. Once there, un-check EVERYTHING that has to do with Kies. (I mean, it's ok if you want to use it for something, but it really doesn't have to start with the computer and just make everything slower than XP already is, right?)
Then restart your computer and try flashing the device again, but this time with this version of Odin.
Once you've done all that, report back and I'll report later on (It's like 01:16 and I've got school in about 7 hours :x)
I hope I could help you and I hope this gets your device up and running again!
Indeed ... I am austrian.
Regarding wiping.
Not possible, recovery just shows "Fimware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again",
This message comes up with normal bootup, and also on recovery.
Download mode works.
I will try later on a different computer where no Samsung SW was ever installed.
But keep in mind, that
1) it flashes for a few minutes, before it allways stops at the same location (on this particular phone).
2) When the problem occured it could not mount /cache in recovery -> this was the reason why I tried to format the flash via Kies
3) This particular install of Odin has no problems with the second S3 phone!
Will report back after I tried Odin on another computer.
I am 99% sure that it will stop at exactly the same spot again
Perhaps redownload the ROM you are trying to flash? It might be a corrupt download...
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Here is the confirmation.
I tried it on a completely virigin (no Samsung SW ever installed) WinXP PC.
I used your Odin archive: Odin3_v3.07_SGSIII.zip
with this official ROM:
I9300XXEMA2_I9300ATOELL1_ATO.zip
PC did not recognize the Phone, so I installed the Samsung USB drivers from the Odin thread here on XDA.
Started the flash process, and it blocks at EXACTLY the same place. (after having a bit more than 50% flashed ....

again, not necessarily. it depends on where you live, but there were a couple of people with a similar problem and samsung replaced the mobo for free with a triggered counter.

Please help, i9300 possibly bricked

Hi,
I flashes ArchiDroid last night, the rom worked fine and everything was going alright. When I woke up during the middle of the night I noticed the phone was on the samsung logo but didn't think anything of it. This morning the battery was dead and it was still stuck on the samsung logo, it won't boot to recovery but does boot to download mode.
I've just tried flashing i9300 Vodafone OFW (not my carrier, but would it make a difference?) via Odin and get the following error message:

If stock roms are failing to flash with nand error then their is not much more options to try other than emergency firmware you could try flashing a recovery like PhilZ recovery with odin and see if it will boot into that then try to make a backup. (but I don't hold out much luck with that).
If that fails try rescue firmware in the link I provided but if that fails than it is a service repair.
