[Q] Standard Factory Reset Having No Effect - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Friend has a Tab 10.1 running stock 4.0.4.
After an indeterminate period of time it randomly reboots back to what appears to be a former saved state, so you basically can't do anything with it. If you remove or update apps, or change settings each reboot will restore the previous settings and the apps you deleted. When doing a factory data reset via the OS nothing changes, it still reboots right back into aforementioned saved state.
After getting into the recovery menu with the volume down+power button and formatting the data and cache, it reboots and again into the same saved state.
What's actually causing this? What can be done to just restore it to its original factory state? Is it malware (Norton couldn't detect any)?

Could it be corrupted internal memory? (Ie hardware?)

OK this is really weird now.
I flashed CW Recovery via ODIN and the recovery mode remained as stock Android System Recovery <3e>.
When I go to access 'apply update from exernal storage' there is no path.
Factory reset still has no impact.
This thing's messed up.

Sounds eerily familiar to the cricket huawei mercury. Essentially, cricket sent an OTA muve music that bricked the device and made the system completely unwriteable... I dont know the specifics but even with all the elite devs out there by brother in law confirmed that there was nothing that couobd be done...
Look into those threads for possible starting points for a solution as I hope that times have improved for the better

Im sure with the mercury that if one had all the tools to reflash the chip itself, something could be done but hopefully that isnt what you have to go through, keep us informed

Thanks so much for the reply. Will definitely look intp that.
One other thing I forgot to mention. It wont boot when connected via usb to my laptop. I can connect via usb after ive booted. Also when factory resetting there doesnt appear to be any delay into the reboot process.
Are there any diagnostics I can run perhaps via adb to see whats up?

When I was trying to get that Mercury working what I had to do, never did get it working mind you but, after all the basic Windows options I then decided to got the linux nautilus route... had to download Virtual Box with an out-of-date ubuntu, set up the system, usb, shared paths etc. Then after hours of troubleshooting finally was able to get my phone to read on the virtual machine in the right mode where terminal picked up the device. Tried to then push Superuser busybox and recovery.img (cwm)... files were picked up on the phone after booting but no root was obtained and like your situation custom recovery wasnt installed over the stock recovery. this is when I gave up

No good. Just could not fix it.
Flashed new roms, old roms, tried to deliberately break it with re-partition on Odin (with no PIT file specified), but NOTHING changed, constantly:
a) fails to boot under charge
b) reboots randomly
c) fails to install apps
d) reboots to a fixed state, where apps and settings remain fixed in stone.
Have to assume that the internal memory is f**cked as the recovery mode cannot access with the message "unkown volume for path /sdcard".
Due to every reboot resulting in a reversion to the aforementioned fix state I can't flash CWM Recovery, and I can't root it (so cannot gain access to system folders even via adb shell). Have to assume that if there is a fix for this it would involve a hardware hack of some description.
Hope this helps anyone else in the future.

[Q] This started as a TiBu Question, but....

Just doing a sanity check: using TiBu to restore system data should work (in theory) so long as you restore data that has been backed up from the same ROM, correct?
Thanks for any help.
EDIT: Having power key problems, please see posts #3 and #16 for updated information.
In case it really backs up and restores EVERYTHING - theoretically you're right.
Practically, I'm not sure it's the case. Since you're restoring while running a ROM, I'm not sure you can get everything to exactly the same state.
Thanks for your help, but this question was hiding a bigger one.
So until today, my phone has been working just fine. I'm still running an old, now outdated and unsupported ROM: ShirshirROM pre-alpha ICS. It's been my daily driver for almost a whole year now, works perfectly with Entropy's old ICS kernel.
Yesterday, I got tired of shell errors with Superuser (which I had been dealing with since the latest binary update), so I finally switched to SuperSU. Everything seemed to work fine afterwards, though I noticed some trouble with the power button being a little wonky, i.e. showing up the power menu when I hadn't pressed it or not immediately responding.
Today, my power button doesn't work correctly at all. I tried wiping cache, dalvik, then restoring a Nandroid of the same ROM/Kernel combo from way earlier this year. Key test in CWM also shows that all buttons register when pressed, EXCEPT the power one. Otherwise phone functions are perfect; I can make calls, send/receive texts, etc, I just have to plug in my phone or have something happen for the screen to turn on, and then I have access to everything. My question is, is this (God forbid) a hardware failure? That would be my worst nightmare, seeing as I'm almost exactly one full year out from contract renewal, and I don't have a lot of money to spend on a new one, nor do I have nowhere near enough expertise to try to fix it myself. What can I do?
P.S. The TiBu question was because in case the Nandroid fixed the problem, I could just restore contacts and SMS from TiBu since it is the same ROM, and be back up and running immediately.
P.P.S. As mentioned, I can get into CWM. This is done by pulling battery, sticking it in, and holding all physical keys until boot screen shows twice. But I can't use the power key to select any options, I have to use home. And key test shows the power button not registering. I'm hoping that that means power key may still work, but that's just me praying this is fixable.
So this problem didn't occur at all prior to installing supersu ?

No, as far as I recall. I'm not using supersu anymore since I'm on a Nandroid but power button still doesn't work. I have to find alternate ways of activating the screen, like plugging it into a charger or pulling the battery to restart :/

After full wiping, if the problem is fixed I should be able to restore the Nandroid from earlier this year without retriggering it, right? Or is that out of the question now?

So I backed up stuff, then went ahead and flashed bone stock using the Odin3 One-Click from 2a in creepy's guide. I can't get past the initial setup wizard though, because Google Services Framework (process com.google.process.gapps), Calendar Storage (process.com.android.providers.calendar), and other Google apps processes keep force closing when I click the Android to start. I was able to boot into stock e3 recovery (again using three-button combo), but I can't select anything using the power key.
I didn't do a full data wipe/factory reset before flashing, and I can't get to the main menus to do so because my phone won't get past the setup wizard, which keeps crashing. What do I try next?
EDIT: I know that I was able to make selections using a CWM-enabled ICS kernel; home key functioned as select. I have the CWM-flashable zip, and I wanted to know if there's anyway to flash this kernel using Odin. I know it won't boot (custom ICS kernel with Gingerbread stock rom), but if I can get into recovery, I can use the home key to do a full data wipe/factory reset, then I'd Odin stock kernel+ROM again and see if that fixes things. So my question is, how do I flash a CWM-zipped kernel in Odin? (You can tell I never use Odin)
EDIT2: I'd still like to know how I can flash a CWM-zipped kernel in Odin, but I'm gonna hold off on it as it would trip the counter and I found out my phone is still under warranty, hooray! They're sending a refurb'ed replacement that should be here in a couple days, I can test that out and see if I can get me up and running again before I decide to do something really rash like trip the counter. It sucks cause I'm going out of town on Thursday but the replacement is arriving Friday, and I won't be back until next Wednesday. I'm stuck using my old iPhone 3G until then :/
I do know you can't flash this from Odim. You'll need another kind of file. Tar file... I don't remember.
Don't know where to find it.
I don't think you should back to stock. Just wipe and formating everything could test it.
Find an app that allow you to get recovery from android like rom toolbox lite.
Download mrRobinson AeSedai Aroma.
After formating and wiped everything, flash your rom and don't get out of recovery. Flash AeSedai just after. Flash gapps and KERNEL from AeSedai.
Must be an cm10 or aokp rom... Any rom from that source.

How would I format and wipe everything if I can't get past the setup wizard on bone stock 2.3.4? I can't install apps, make calls or texts, nothing. All I can do is select the language and make emergency calls. I can't wipe in stock e3 recovery either because the power button doesn't work.
I need a way to either Odin a kernel from which I can use the home button to make selections, or find some other way to remotely format and wipe my phone. Is there a way for me to put my phone in USB debugging mode so I can maybe use ADB? I can't access the settings menu...
Don't u use home button to select things in stock recovery?

Nah, it's power key. I double checked again this morning. Oh, and I guess it's called 3e recovery, not e3 xD.
One other note, when pulling battery, then putting it back in, phone autoboots. I have to hold buttons then place battery in to boot to recovery, and for download mode, I have to have it plugged in, buttons held, then place battery in to get to download mode.
EDIT: Would anyone be willing to do me a huge favor? I want to find out if Entropy's DD GB kernel, the Odin-flashable tar one, can use home as select in CWM. Would someone be willing to temporarily flash DD_01242012 from here to check for me? It's a CWM zip, the changes are very tiny between it and the previous 01232012 Odin one. I just don't want to Odin it myself and trip the counter to find out it was useless, especially since I don't have a jig to reset the counter.
So an update:
While looking around for a way to root my new refurb model which came shipped with stock ICS, I found creepy's Stock ICS with root package, and I thought, "I told AT&T I was on ICS, I guess I should actually put ICS on my phone instead of leaving GB (UCKH7) on there. Maybe since I was on ICS before I can get past the gapps force closing too and do a factory reset from the settings menu." Sure enough, after flashing stock ICS, I was able to get past the darn wizard and toy with it. I do have problems of course: calendar still force closes, and the phone will randomly reboot after some period of using it. But at least I was able to access stuff.
My data was all still there, all pictures, contacts, settings, etc. I realized that before I do a data wipe/factory reset, I should heed the emmc superbrick bug warning and NOT do that with stock ICS kernel. I still had ES file explorer and root access, so I went in and manually deleted all data as much as possible, to make it look like my phone did have a factory reset done as I said to the AT&T representative. I've deleted wifi access points, browser history/cookies/cache, all contacts, texts, pictures/videos, downloads, all CWM zips and backups, all installed apps, all accounts that were signed in...
My newest questions are:
1) is there anything I'm missing that I should delete so that my phone does not look like it's been modified in any way? Also, any personal data I'm missing that needs to be deleted? I still have root access so I can delete anything I want.
2) Should I go ahead and risk the brickbug and actually do a factory reset/data wipe, or should I just let it be since I've deleted most things manually (and not potentially send them a useless brick lol)? Actually, since I'm rooted, I can install Mobile Odin to flash a CWM-enabled kernel, then wipe data/factory reset safely from there; that is, assuming my phone doesn't do a random reboot in the middle of flashing the kernel. I do run the risk of it rebooting while flashing and possibly bricking something else. So should I do that and take that risk, should I take the risk of wiping data from the stock kernel, or is there no reason to take either risk anymore?
3) Is there anywhere I can find a non-rooted stock UCLE5 ICS Odin-flashable tar, that I can flash before sending the phone back?
How about:
1. Flash back to stock GB
2. Wipe Data
3. Upgrade to stock ICS via kies or OTA

Thanks for your help, but I can't do that. If I could, I wouldn't be stuck in this predicament.
Power key doesn't work at all, but it is necessary to make selections in stock 3e recovery. Hence, I can't wipe from recovery, either on stock GB or ICS.
Stock GB rom doesn't boot past Setup Launcher due to gapps force-closes. These force closes prevent me from reaching the settings menu within stock GB to do a wipe there.
My two options for wiping data are using stock ICS ROM (under settings menu), or flashing a custom kernel using Mobile Odin, then wiping with the home key in CWM. Both are risky: stock ICS ROM uses the stock kernel to wipe, possible brickbug there. My phone currently experiences random reboots without warning; a reboot during a Mobile Odin flash could also brick something. My question is, should I do either one, or neither at all?
What about wiping through ADB?

Well, that previously wasn't an option on GB since I couldn't put the phone in debugging mode, but I can now in ICS so in theory it should work. The question now is, will the phone do one of its random reboots while I'm working with it in ADB...

Odin Problems?

Hi All,
Let me preface by saying I'm appreciative of all the info and knowledge you guys so generously impart to N00Bs like myself. Never the less, I'm at wits end with this device and am ready to chuck it against something hard.
The Problem
After getting a few minor glitchy things with stock 2.2, I decided to revert to 2.1 using odin and try my hand at using a custom ROM. I tried CM10, and had a miserable time flashing it and had to unbrick the thing with odin, which of course I downloaded from the forum, followed all intstructions, etc.
Now the problem I'm having has to do with updating through Kies, which I'm resolved to do because flashing anything custom never seems to work out for me. When I've plugged in the phone and the drivers automatically load, I switch it into kies mode but the kies software on my computer will not recognize it. (windows 7 64). The phone screen will switch to a picture of a usb jack and say initializing, but it never says its connected. It will flash briefly to the home screen before going back to the initializing screen repeatedly.
Other Symptoms
-Rooting with the update.zip method isn't working either. No SU in the app drawer.
-Hard to get into download mode, only works if i press the 2 buttons with the battery removed then connecting usb cable.
Again, I'm very grateful for any assistance that can be offered.

DO NOT USE KIES it is notorious for hard bricking phones. I to had trouble with update.zip but then I found a correct one and it worked fine. Thanks for the advice.
Is there a version and/or method you would recommend for a noob? Additionally, I tried your update file a couple of times and still no luck. Could that have anything to do with CWR? I had to install an old version of ROM manager earlier when I was rooted because 2.1 isn't supported anymore.

You certainly want to avoid kies, unless you want to totally brick your device.
As for obtaining root, I was partial to z4root back in my vibrant days
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833953
It works well, although it occasionally needs a second or third attempt if the first fails.
(Remember to be patient, it sometimes tales a little time)
As for having issues updating your device, what exactly are you attempting to update to, and what method are you applying?

[Q] Need to wipe

Hi guys I am reaching out for some help. I have spent a few too many hours already searching for an answer and I have way too many tabs open in chrome at the moment
My wife broke her S4 and we put some tape over the screen and she used it like that for awhile, finally the LCD died and I was able to get a good deal on another S4 so I decided to list the broken one on ebay.
I was able to do a full back up from the broken phone since it will still power on just fine, I just cant see anything. So now I am attempting a wipe and I am running out of things to try. It is running the latest 4.3 firmware.
I tried using ODIN to flash the MDK image onto it and it keeps failing and from what I understand that is because I cannot revert to an older firmware. I am sure it is in download mode (I watched a video of someone booting into download mode and followed his timing exactly and the phone connects via usb but does not load any drives).
From what I am reading the VRUDMI1 will not wipe the personal data partition and this is what I need.
I tried android device manager which was enabled but it wants to send a notification to the phone to turn on the wipe function. I can ring it but not wipe.
Also the phone is stock never rooted.

Hopefully that will help.
EDIT: That is for MJ7. I keep on mixing up the firmwares. Sorry!

[Q] DNA texting and calling issue

So, I used Moonshine to unlock and root the VZW Droid DNA, and after it was all said and done, I installed CM11 with the KK Gapps.
Normally, I don't have an issue with this kind of thing, but I could call and text after for approximately two hours, then it just stopped.
I now can't text at all, and when I call, it says something about needing to go to an external operator on VZW's service,
but what gets me is that I still have LTE, I still have data, I can browse the internet, I just can't call or text. I'm baffled.
In settings, in about phone, it says it's connected to service, it isn't roaming, it has all connectivity and even shows me my number.
Why could this be? I really need this phone to have service. Thanks to all who help!

Same issue here. All data works via LTE (status bar icon turns blue) but without SMS or phone ability. Traveling on business this week I noticed poor connectivity and ran the *228 #2 option to update my roaming coverage. I thought that was the cause, but it may not be if others are experiencing the same. I can reach Verizon activation if I switch CDMA mode to automatic (goes to roaming) but activation cannot complete. Seems like we need reprogramming for some reason but I doubt Verizon will want to assist us with customized software.
Wise people of XDA, please help/advise us confused souls.

Flash back a custom recovery and Rom.
Copy sd contents back to device.

This is the same method I used to get mine working again.
Something happened to my radio partition, it was showing my phone number as 000-000-0000 and would not recognize the SIM. Too many ROM flashes. Hahaha. This will rebuild all the factory partitions.
Worked like a champ for me.

Yup! I saw this like a cool alternative, instead go to full Ruu route
I'm sure this is a silly question I'll find the answer to immediately after I hit "Submit", but... I've found the Sense 5 deodexed ROM mentioned in similar threads but how do I know which recovery download to use? 1.15 or 3.06?

3.0.6 is Stock Htc sense 5 is the new Vzw Ota (jelly bean 4.2.2)
Scratching my head. Nothing sees the phone via ADB though the drivers and software appear correct. I'm able to flash TWRP through Flashify and Flash Image GUI but it doesn't seem to like any of the recovery options above. Selecting Recovery from the Moonshine HBOOT screen brings me (eventually) to a red "!" triangle over a phone. I have the option to reset through Sense 5 settings or Moonshine, but my guess is that just makes things worse/does nothing without the correct recovery. Any ideas?
EDIT: Small gains - computer sees the phone if I reinstall CM10.2.1. Not that it fixes much...

a red "!" triangle over a phone, its stock recovery, reboot and go to setting and perform Phone Reset.

Similar "!" images indicated recovery issues on my old Droid 3. Here they're a good thing and I'm back in action after using the steps discussed. Thanks all!

After a day or two of use I have lost LTE and a second reset has not brought it back. I have had past sporadic SIM card error messages upon boot of fresh CM installs but assumed it was normal. Connectivity would eventually resume but I'd nudge the card tray anyway. 3G seems strong & solid - thoughts/suggestions?

[Q] Bricked Nook Tablet (16GB)

Another sad day with a Nook Tablet being bricked. I haven't been on here in a while since I had thought my NT died out on me, I've already bought a dell venue 8 and everything but today I was curious to see if I could get my little nook up and running again and I did. Turned out the battery connector had came loose and all I had to do is push it back in and now it works just fine. Although it is running up with lit screen and all, I do seem to have a problem with it getting to turn on completely. It's turning on then clearing data and doing system factory restore but around 80-90% of the way it's done, it shuts off. I know for a fact it's not the battery giving out because I've let it sit through Adam Outlers Ubuntu restore for well over 5 minutes. I've tried many things being reparting it and using system images to push to sd card and let it flash itself and no luck. I've yet to try a sd cwm (backup restore) or a bootable cm10 sd card. I just want to be able to run stock with no problems and i'd be fine. I'd appreciate any help and I hope all of you have a great day!
Edit: I've also tried flashing Roms, no luck there either.
I have been able to get CM10 Running with touchscreen working and all. I can confirm my tablet is on stock firmware for touchscreen. The recovery flasher won't work. The recovery is never replaced. I've tried many restoration files and none have worked as of right now. If anyone has any advice, it'd be nice. This is very time consuming and I would like to dev for the Nook Community again but what good am I with no tablet ;D .
bump...sigh
Sounds like you just need to follow the threads to make a bootable micro sdcard, unlock and root it (which gives you custom recovery), update to the recovery that works for the android version you want to develop for and enjoy it.

I am no expert but I assume you have rooted it? If not then could that be why it isn't accepting the recovery? For kicks I would root via SD then see if the recovery works? Also how are you doing the recovery? Internal install or CMW via SD? If you are doing CMW via internal, I would try the SD external version.
Also if it tried to restore the stock and failed, it might have done enough to unroot it which could (maybe) be causing your issue?
Personally I have the stock ROM (4.3) rooted as I like this method the best as well (gives me the best of both worlds and suits my needs currently)
I haven't been able to get my links to work but I have a solution.

Thank you, I'll test now and report back. I've bricked this thing so many times lmao.
Edit: no go, the drivers don't like to reason with me. (Win 8.1 might be reason)
Did u try going into the BN website and download them from there. It took me a while to do it from Win7. I kept connecting the nook and it finally took it. Don't give up bro.
