First up, sorry for the new thread....
Now....i've just (this morning) upgraded to the S2 (international?)
I live in the UK and my phone is locked to 3 mobile UK.
I'm not totally new to the Android scene....my last phone was a Galaxy W that i rooted, flashed CWM to and flashed unofficial CM10 to.......
Believe me when i say i have put in the screen time on this....i've read xda, android forums, google searched, visited the cyanogen website and even tried github......
The trouble is that every method i've seen says something different....or it's for a different version of the OS....or it's for a different varient of the phone....etc, etc......
All i want to do is root, install CWM and flash JB to my phone with little or no chance of bricking it......

IMHO, the most important thing to do before anything else is to confirm whether your phone has an "insane" EMMC chip affected by a superbrick bug. You have an ICS 4.0.4 installed, which might be a recipe for big trouble if you ever try wiping your data from recovery. Read this for more details: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756242. There is an app here on XDA to verify your chip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27014974.
The rest (rooting, CWM) has been covered extensively. If you want a stock or stock-based ROM, taking a quick glance over General or Development forums will give you sooo much info...
Try to stick to xda forums only.
Every other android forum gets its stuff from here anyway.

Well....this is me......
Unknown chip....don't know whether to feel relieved or not.....
REALLY beginning to have second thoughts as to whether i should modify this phone at all......
If i were to take the plunge....it's CM based ROMs i'm looking to flash....possibly 9, preferably 10.....

If you're honestly that terrified, leave it. There's always going to be risk if you flash. How much risk is determined by how poorly you follow instructions/learn (as opposed to having someone give you a bunch of steps to follow you don't understand). If you can follow instructions/learn, that risk is small. The risk increases exponentially with how badly you do those two things.

Read carefully the first thread I referenced - it tells you how to avoid a brick, and it's not that complicated. As already said, you need to understand the steps, rather than just follow them. I have a bad chip, and I am still OK after about 10 or so full ROM flashes (both through Odin and recovery), and probably twice as many kernels... There is always a chance of something going sideways, so you have to decide for yourself. Some phones are easier ro screw up than others. I also have an LG P990 - that phone is literally unbrickable, short of physical damage. Unfortunately, can't say the same about SGS2, but I am still flashing it...

It's just that i select a thread that might be of use, read it, and discover it applies to a different varient of the phone....or a different OS version...........

-take necessary backup (sms/contacts/apps etc)
-download stock JB 4.1.2 from sammobile.com
-flash it via odin
-if you are stuck in samsung logo, reboot in recovery mode and factory reset & reboot it would be fine
-to root, download Philz latest CWM and flash it.
-you can also try NeatROM lite (which has samsung boaltware removed)

I've been looking at the Dorimanx kernel....if i read it right it includes root and cwm.....is this a good choice? Also am i right in thinking that i can go on to flash ANY cusROM once that kernel is installed?

Yes, it includes root (using Chainfire's SuperSU) and touch CWM. Dori seems to work very well for me. Stable, with nice customizations. Many people would consider it the best kernel, but we know there is no such thing...
Nobody can guarantee that ANY ROM will work with a particular kernel. It's always best to read both ROM and kernel threads about compatibility. Some ROM/kernel combos are known for problems. But Dori is supposed to be compatible with most of the ROMs.
One thing to keep in mind is that CWM will not do a complete Nandroid backup for you - it doesn't include Preload partition. Workarounds are available, like hawkerpaul's scripts, or Onandroid.

So the steps i need to undertake are.....
1) flash dorimanx kernel via odin.
2) create a nandroid backup (without using cwm)
3)Wipe cache, dalvic and data.
4) flash this ROM....

Edit....just read further down the install instructions for the Rom and it mentions cwm flashable modem....do i need to worry about that?....

I am not an expert by any means, so don't take my words as the ultimate truth... Others may have better advice. Besides, I know almost nothing about CM, as my preference has always been towards stock-based ROMs... The best option would be to follow instructions in CM thread you mentioned -- it tells you exact steps for installing it. Flash Dori kernel (or any other safe kernel, for that matter) first using Odin, to make further steps safe for you (because of a brick risk with your current 4.0.4 stock kernel). It is supposed to be compatible with CM10 (Dori was saying that CM10.1 is broken). The latest version (7.46) has some mixed reviews, so you may want to use 7.45 - it is available in both TAR and ZIP versions for flashing via Odin or recovery. You can make a nandroid backup using CWM, just run hawkerpaul's script to also backup Preload partition.

I couldn't find a "tar" version of dorimanx and siyah wouldn't install through odin, so i had to do it this way.
My question now is.....
Do i NEED to install a custom kernel, or will the stock kernel support a cusROM ?....specifically the CM10 that i linked to in my earlier post?......

Technically, you didn't need to root your current ROM, since it has no relevance to your ability to flash CM10... For TAR version of Dori kernel, look here -- Kernel-V7.45-[01-10]-[29-01]-TAR-FOR-ODIN.tar. This download link is posted in the kernel's thread.

Not sure if I understood the question exactly... CM10 that you referenced includes its own kernel, so your stock kernel is irrelevant and doesn't have to support CM10 -- it will be replaced the moment you flash it. The only thing you really need to flash a custom ROM is a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP). BUT, as you already know, you have a 4.0.4 stock kernel that is affected by a superbrick bug, and you are not sure about your EMMC chip. So, flash a safe kernel first (Dori is a good option, but it can be a different one). It will include the CWM recovery (permanent -- not temporary, like you used for rooting). After that, you can safely flash your CM ROM from CWM, followed by gapps.
Once you are on CM, your kernel (the one that you flashed before) will be gone and replaced by the CM kernel. You can keep it, or, if you want, you can then re-flash another kernel of your choice (Dori or other).

I want to go back to cm9 nightlys, i had it on previously to this rom im running now,
With all the brickbug posts floating about im paranoid at whether i could safely return to cm9 nightly or any cm9 builds.i have the bugged emmc chip as gotbrickbug v1.1 tells me but im guessing it should be fine to flash back? though wanted feedback as to whether that would be ok,
ive also had various other roms on this phone too, im sure i also had siyah kernal rc3 i think?? not ure on build but all worked fine.
would (in your opinion) flashing back to cm9 brick my phone?

Only way to get brick bug active on 4.03 if you are on that old siyah with bricking bug.
So if you are stock or cfroot for 4.03 you can use cwm data wipe, restore backup...etc. but if your backup is on 4.04 brick bug kernel your in trouble.

Thankfully i only realised it was released about 2/5 days ago so didnt bother .. Seen mulitple posts on that issue and no dont have a backup wanted fresh install

I'm going to root my phone, and possible install CM9. But the emmc bug confuses me, i have checked with the app and it tells me i have the faulty chip. Is CWM dangerous to use? I read somewhere that you should not use CWM if you had the bug, but others again seems to use it without problems. I also read somewhere that a normal factory reset (without any root or flash) also could brick the phone, is that true? I would really appreciate some good answers on whats safe, and whats not. I will off course press the thanks button a lot!

The ones causing the bricks mate is the stock kernel from sammy's 4.0.4 rom with CWM. Wiping using stock recovery is okay (i tried it). If you use other kernel like siyah you will be safe. In short, Stock kernel from samsung's 4.0.4 update + CWM Recovery + Wipe = Hard brick. As long as you avoid that, you will be safe

You could try that. Bdw, Stock kernel (sammy 4.0.3) + CWM (just like CF-Root) is safe. If you ever wanna try going to another rom and you are on a stock 4.0.4 rom, flash siyah first before doing a wipe

Flashed CM9 rc2 last night but couldn't get on with it so flashed resurection remix but now I notice my sd card and my internal memory are reversed! I have done multiple wipes and re-flashed rom and but still stuck with sd card as emmc and its causingproblems.
Please help!
I'm a noob, only ever flashed in cwm, never Odin.etc.
Download ics sd binder from the Market and set the settings like this.

If i remembered correctly, if you go to storage and press menu (the one on the left side of your home button) you have an option there. Try it

Does that let titanium see the card.I tried the remount sdcard app and that doesn't let titanium see the card.
And it doesn't let you move apps using apps2sd.

ICS binder didn't work for me, changed to differentROM wanamlite, very good, stable and fast.
Wouldn't using ext instead of internal slow things down? I have a sandisk ultra class 10
but surely internal is faster?

I have got a Samsung Galaxy SII with stock firmware ICS 4.0.3 which is brikkable for the emmc.
I would like to flash the Cyanogenmod 9; could it give me problems?
Before doing this, I would like to make a nandroid backup by the temporary ClockWorkMod Recovery.
If I would flash the Cyanogenmod 9, and then I would like to restore the old nandroid backup (always by using the temporary ClockWorkMod Recover) ,could it give me problems?

Since you're on 4.0.3., you cant be affected by that particular brick. Only on 4.0.4. with stock kernel and those based on it.
If you backup or wipe in Cwm, there wont be any problems. After that I recommend Siyah kernel if you're gonna flash roms.

Maybe you mean that soon after the flash of the cyanogen9 I should flash the Siyah's kernel?
Hasn't the cyanogen9 an own kernel, or there is still the stock one after the flash?
I would like to try not to increase the internal counter for the warranty..

Cm9 comes with its own kernel which has Cwm. From there you can flash anything you want.
The counter will stay the same unless you flash with Odin in D/L mode.

I wouldn't recommend Beta releases. Better flash the latest stable release.

There have been a few issues with Siyah 4.0, hence a quick beta available to 4.1. I'd suggest you use 3.4.1. Seems to work perfectly for me. You could flash 4.1 once it is out of beta.

Sorry if the Answer was staring me in my face but I'm not sure about upgrading to the CyanogenMod because of the superbricking I might get..
If any help can be given as to whether I am safe to do it, it will be much appreciated, My android version is 4.0.4, Build number imm76D.XWLPT.
I have just rooted it with XWLPW-ROOT-CWM6, and It seems to have rooted fine.
Will be much appreciated if I can get any help as to whether I can Flash it with CyanogenMod and everything will be fine..

EDIT: Yeah I just realized about having the Superbrick bug, I must have a kernel that is not liable to bricking, I rooted it with PhilZ touch 3 and when I go into recovery mode it says CWM Base version: 6.0.1.8 at the bottom, Am I safe from the bug?
You're safe as long as you don't perform a wipe from stock recovery in 4.0.4 (and not all phones have an insane chip). So yes, you can flash CM.

EDIT: Sorry, do you know which CyanogenMod I should flash? I just want to upgrade to one that is fully working, but there are many in the index and I dont know which one to flash :s THANKS!!
and If I dont do a wipe? wont it be stuck at boot as the Guide says it will?
I highly recommend you read the discussion thread for the version of CM you're wanting to try in General section. So you can get a handle on other people's experiences with it, bugs/flaws/annoyances/features/etc. I never flash a rom without reading the first 10 pages of those threads & the last two weeks or so worth of posts so I know what I'm in for.
I agree. And you always have to perform a full wipe if you change firmware.

yes thank you I will, but do I wipe my phone before I install CM? or..? during it..? I'm scared of this superbricking ^-^, I have flashed my GS1 before with no problems, but problems arose and I've been out of the game for a while, and have forgotten phones and roms etc for quite a bit ^-^

I assume you've read guides about how to flash a rom? Copy the zip-file to your phone, back up, wipe and flash.
You don't have to be scared of this superbrick bug because you're already running a custom kernel.

Well, I was trying to root my phone so I don't think so, now that I think of it no, its only root and clockwork recovery mode thingymajig because file size only 7mb so if it was only root, my build number and everything is as same as before ^-^,
That's what I am so confuzzled about, I need to downgrade to a custom rom that must come with a custom kernel right to be able to upgrade to cyanogen right...? otherwise ill brick it?
No. Make sure you flash a custom kernel (for example Siyah) with Odin. Then there's no need to flash other firmware first before upgrading. Just wipe your device in CWM (after the back up), and flash the rom you want.

Make sure you have kies installed or at least the drivers.
Reboot into download mode
Run ODIN 1.85
Flash Siyah kernel (.tar) via PDA section
Boot into recovery run backup
Wipe data/factory reset
Flash CM zip file.

Btw, if you have any apps/appdata you need to restore after wipe you can restore them from your nandroid backup using appextractor.

1 - The phone is rooted and superuser is intalled but when I go into recovery its something like android 3e recovery which is stock recovery I guess,so my question is will I be able to flash using this stock recovery if not should I re-root my s2 to get clockworkmodrecovery or is there any other method to get cwmr?If I have to re-root my s2 then whats the easiest way to do it?

I'll give you a quick head-up then you go off and do your own.
In the bold, since it's rooted, get the Odin Mobile, flash the custom kernel which should already included the CwMR. From there, boot into CwMR and flash any custom ROM you want.
The open sentence, you said the phone is rooted, then you asked how to root, I think you need to understand more. Anyway, read those Stickies threads more and more. For the starter, search for "creepyncrawly" and read ALL threads in his signature.

Do cwm and rooting have any relation?
The phone is rooted but when I go into recovery its other than cwm and through which I can't install custom rom so I asked if I have to "re-root" to get cwm or not...

Root and CWM have no relation. Having root will allow you to obtain CWM by flashing a kernel that includes CWM. All of the kernels for our phone on this site include CWM. So as votinh mentioned, install mobile odin (which you can find on this site), and then flash one of the kernels from this forum, which will give you CWM.

If you get and get to know with 1 and 2 then question 3 will be easily answered.
Get into the recovery, play and understand all options, it's not many though.
About 4, I said 80% you will not lose the unlock if you understand the factors. It means 20% is your fault if you do not follow the instruction so go off and hunting that 20%. Be sure of what you do.
About 5, do you know what version of OS currently on your phone? Get it right first before doing anything else.

Use the UCLL6 plus root package from the link. The one-click downloader is easiest. Then, if you want, install Mobile Odin lite or Mobile Odin pro and use it to flash a custom kernel such as AJK or Siyah.
And... I would suggest you read through the first link in my signature to learn the basics.

Not really sure, but probably not. AFAIK, most of the lost unlocks happen with Jelly Bean. But if it does happen, you should be able to unlock it again with galaxsim unlock.

Depends on what you want. UCLL6 is Ice Cream Sandwich, 4.0.4. If you prefer Jelly Bean, there are several great firmware distributions, both Samsung based and AOSP based, available in the development section of this forum.

Well I got this device from a great friend of mine @DowntownJeffBrown. Its a T-Mobile Vibrant (US). Now I'm using it in India.
It came to me with a CM10.1 ( thanks to my friend there ). My previous phone was a tiny Galaxy Y. It had just GB and no ICS. We just got CM7 a month back. After using that... the transaction is a bit difficult. (I just got the phone yesterday though ).
My questions are just basic noob ones but reading through guides here..most of them are solved. I still have some thus the thread. Well let me start.
As I have CM10.1 now... If I have to change the ROM...do I HAVE to flash froyo? And after the Odin... can i directly flash the ROM.zip or do I have to install a kernel or flash a CM7 or a CM9 or a CM10 before proceeding?
Can I get a temporary CWM or is it available only with kernels?
ROM zips come with an included kernel? If then... Can I flash them directly from froyo?
I read in one guide that I'll have to flash the SAME Rom.zip twice (after a reboot ). Is it necessary? And can someone explain why that is important?
Can I flash the modems? I saw that the modems listed are for US ONLY. Well the phone was from the US but right now its half way around the world...will it work?
What is the necessity of a bootloader?

A: NO. you can flash ROM without flashing froyo (go back to stock before flashing a new ROM). You can directly flash through CWM the ROM.zip

A:There are two options here. Choose which is best for you, before you start.
ROOT ONLY METHOD:
A – This is an update.zip (633KB) that roots your phone only. You can then install Rom Manager from the Market to flash CWR (Clockwork Recovery) and install custom ROMs.
INSTALL CLOCKWORK RECOVERY AND FLASH A ROM THAT WILL GIVE ROOT ACCESS (MY PREFERRED METHOD):
B – use the other update.zip (1.7MB) and this will flash CWR for you – allowing you to immediately flash a custom ROM.. I do this because it's faster.

A:YES. you can flash modems. Only thing matters is choose a modem based on your OS (ICS/JB/CM7 etc)

When we got Gingerbread ROMs, we also faced the issue of not being able to see the Recovery on the GB Kernels and having to see our screens go funny which were safely called Rainbows! Well, no more !!

Bootloaders are unlocked so that u can flash things like new radio's. So if u are only going to flash roms and kernels u will never have to worry about the bootloader.
I'm pretty sure that radio's are universal as in there is no Indian radio and USA radio. There is just vibrant radio's that work all around the world universally. But I may be wrong this because it's been so long since I used the vibrant.
As far as flashing a new Rom you should just have to reboot into recovery, wipe data and system, then just be able to flash a new Rom. I'm not quit sure why that one Rom u showed me tells u to flash it twice. But again it's been so long since I used the vibrant that I'm not sure. I can tell you this when I flashed cm10.1 on it before I sent it to u I just use these steps
Reboot recovery
Wipe data/system/caches
Flash Rom
Flash gapps
Reboot
But let some of these guys clarify it for u because they are the experts on this phone at this point not me.

A: Yes. you don't need to flash froyo (which means ODIN back to stock) prior flashing a ROM. You can simply boot into recovery and do a FULL wipe (data/system, cache, dalvik) and if needed format the system under mounts (please refer the installation guide provided with the ROM ). Also re-flashing the ROM depends. It will not happen all time. BUT if it has to be done it is inserted in the OP. Further If the 1st boot after flashing ROM is unsuccessful don't panic and do a battery pull and re-flash the ROM.zip b/c sometimes recovery needs to updated

A: No. its not essential to flash bootloaders. You can proceed without them.

A: You can use any firmware (I think you are referring to radio/modem) which supports vibrant and the OS you are running. Modems are not based on location BUT the results depends on various locations.

Yes. PDA and PIT are used when going back to stock using odin. This link shows [GUIDE] How to Restore or Recover Your Samsung Vibrant using those files.
A Samsung Galaxy S ROM has a few parts :
kernel -> includes the linux kernel, which is the core of the Android OS, drivers to communicate with the hardware. Froyo includes Linux 2.6.32. Gingerbread is 2.6.35.
PDA -> most of the stuff, android and samsung applications, ringtones, etc.
Modem (or phone) -> the radio firmware. Without this you have 0 communication with the cell tower.
CSC -> customisation for a particular provider or country
The PDA can also include the kernel (zImage file)

Thanks for that link!
I meant in my old phone... There were three files ( PDA , CSC and modem ) that we had to put in Odin while flashing but here its just one file ( froyo stock image I guess ) in the PDA slot. And also the pit file ofcourse!

And when (if I ) flash a fresh stock ROM... Does my internal memory( the second bar in the pic) get cleaned up? Just the system partition is cleaned right?

I just boot boot into recovery >wipe data and system and Mount everything back flash my new Rom and done? And oh... Flash the zip again.

And about bootloaders... Do I HAVE to flash them? Can I do stuff without them? ( i never had to deal with it before )
And...
Since the phone is a US phone... Which firmware do I chose? US or Indian (if any is available that is )

Just to maybe save you some trouble in the future.......
Froyo is 2.2 and stock for the vibrant is Eclair 2.1, you can find froyo odin images but that is not stock.
With the vibrant you can flash roms without needing to go to stock everytime if the os is the same or if you are upgrading, never downgrade through recovery mode.
You only have to flash back to stock (or froyo) if you plan to downgrade, for example you are on jelly bean 4.2 and want to try gingerbread 2.3.
The only time you should have to flash twice is when you are upgrading, for example you are on 2.2 froyo and want to try jelly bean 4.2, recovery is updated with first flash then second flash installs the rom.

Yes it will be wiped, that is where your apps are stored. Just back them up first and and restore (app only) after flashing a new rom. Things like pictures and music will not be wiped though.

Take a look at this thread and read it from front to back. It was when we got ICS, but there are many bits of info in there for bootloaders, why we have to flash certain things in certain order, hazards and pitfalls.

I bricked my sgs2 i777 because of rom manager, i paid for fixing my phone and i want to flash Cyanogenmod but im afraid to brick it again, so i'd like to know, an easy way to install a rom without PC step by step please. Thanks
Best advice i have for ya is to do a lot more reading before trying to flash anything.
There is a lot of info here in the stickied threads, etc. And as well in the more up to date threads. U will have to do some searching in the q & a and general forums, but it shouldn't be to hard to find ur answers. But u need to be sure of what u r doin before u do it, so u don't end up with a messed up phone again. There are members here that constantly help, but i think it is best to help urself 1st and then ask ?s later if ya can't find an answer or resolve an issue.

I read about Cyanogenmod but i cant find a post about flashing a rom without rom manager or pc, does someone know how?
Friend, you need to read/research... a lot. I don't know of a way to flash a rom using just a PC. But flashing CM is just like flashing any other rom for your device. Please read the thread of the rom you're wanting to install thoroughly (especially the OP) before proceeding.
And most definitely stay away from Rom Manger; it just isn't completely compatible with the i777.

Isnt there a CWM for i777? I found the app recovery tool that installs CWM but before installing it you see the SCARY rom manager logo, i researched a lot, but i dont know what to do, most of posts and videos are using rom manager.
On the i777 the recovery (in most cases it's CWM) is included in the kernel. So there's no need to install it separately.
The only time you'd ever need to install CWM manually is if you're trying to get from JB to KK. Is this the case? You state you want CM but you fail to list which version. More information would be helpful, such as what you're currently running and what you're trying to accomplish.

Im running at&t 4.1.2, i want to flash CM 10.2

Ok here ya go...
U can get Root with Framaroot apk (found here on XDA).
U can use Mobile Odin (available on XDA or Play Store) to flash a compatible 4.1.2 dev'd kernel, that includes cwm recovery (see AJK thread in Dev forum).
Flash the AJK kernel (boot.img) initially through Mobile Odin, then reboot into said cwm and flash the AJK kernel again (the whole kernel.zip) so that the capacitive buttons work correctly. Then reboot into recovery and flash ur Rom of choice, per that Rom's OP install instructions. This has been posted quit a few times by myself and others, specifically creepyncrawly. Plz continue to read up thoroughly in the threads i mentioned above and happy flashing. :thumbup:

It's not critical when you wipe. It's probably best to wipe before you flash the rom of your choice, though it can be done after. The worst that can happen is that it won't boot properly before you wipe, but the wipe will fix it.

So first cwm, wipe cache, dalvik, install ajk kernel and rom? Or install kernel, wipe and install rom?

From stock 3e recovery, you should perform a wipe data/factory reset, then install AJK kernel and the rom. You will not be able to perform wipe cache and dalvik from stock 3e recovery as far as I remember. But either way, the important wipe is wipe data/factory reset from within recovery.
Wow guys thank you so so much it worked i admire what you guys do but no i installed cyanogen 10.1 which ajk kernel is compatible because i think Ajk kernel noswap wont work anymore.
AJ has an AOSP kernel in the OP of his [Kernel] AJK thread.
