I went to bed last night and my DNA decided to start a data session that lasted 5 hours and used 2.5G of data during this time. It started another data session at 5am that used 750MB data. I woke up to 3G used and alerts from Verizon. Any idea what may have caused this usage? Verizon can't see what was being used. I just downloaded My Data Manager but was wondering where I might find what caused this and if anyone had this experience. Running unrooted stock. Thanks.
It's some app taking all your data through wake locks
Definitely an app, since HTC has a built in function that stops sync after midnight for 7 hours.

Verizon was having a tough time figuring out what app could use that much data. That is movie watching use.
Look at data usage in settings and see what app is causing this.

Do you know what's a lot of wake locks? I had 7.1% used by system wake locks, I'm curious if that's a lot over the course of one battery cycle of 15 hrs?

turns out it is exchange mail that gets frozen up and runs data constantly. not sure why but it only happens when I am out of town. of course Verizon isn't responsible but they gave me 4G free data this month to cover me.

Great job on Verizon's end.
However, are you suggesting that the Exchange account can freeze and suck up all you data ?
Did it happen again since ?
This really is a problem if it happens regularly...
D.
Yea... great Verizon steped up on this. Of course... we should all be weary of those social apps that want to auto update status and link to contacts as well....

it has happened several times. used 3G of data in one night and they are not taking responsibility for it. they actually say they will stop supporting exchange in the future. I am very concerned that it happens again. I have Smart Synch enabled for non peak hours to stop it.

If you gps isnt accurate, or takes forever to lock on, or is just not working
goto
settings--->Location & security---> uncheck vzw location services
try to use Standalone GPS services by itself, if not use Standalone and Google. just make sure the vzw one is off.
I tested with some people and it worked for them too.
WoW.... it really works... Just confirmed it myself. I am rooted, I did NOT do lagfix and updated to DI01
confirmed worked. it took 2 sec and was almost 100% accurate. with all 3 checked it was hit and miss and when it did find me it wasnt accurate and it took anywhere from 3-5 min to find me and it was usually about 1-2 football fields away,, still on old software, no update for me yet and no root
nice find

I have had that unchecked since the phone came out and still had problems. If there was any fix it was from the update.
unchecked... no difference, lock time is still measured around 1-2 mins.
didn't work for me...
Worked great for me. I was getting fed up waiting on the damn thing to lock onto me while I was driving and needed to find a place quick and directions. Thanks for the heads up.

Take it in to verizon and show them... They will give you a new phone.
So are you guys getting GPS locks in a matter of seconds all the time, even after reboot? Mine takes a few minutes all the time to get a lock, or else is very inaccurate. If I wait for the lock I get accurate to within feet, and it'll stay that way.
Well, I thought that worked for me until I rebooted my phone to see if it really worked. No dice.
From what I understand (and I could be wrong) essentially what you are doing is turning off the cell phone triangulation that google/verizon provide and sticking with just the straight GPS unit. I don't necessary see why turning off the "rough location" would effect the warm up time of the GPS unit, but maybe it actually does.
Just didn't work on mine after my GPS unit was cold.
Does anyone know if this is a hardware issue or software?
Browsing multiple forums brings up slews of the same complaints, but no one has put forth any kind of solution, nor has Samsung.
I have all location services enabled, and I get locks virtually instantly almost all the time, and it's always accurate to within probably a few feet. Maybe I'm just lucky?
I'd hate to say it, but I fear it is hardware, seeing as I have yet to have a lock take more than 10 seconds, usually 4 or less.
This is really the first time I've been on the good side of a widespread issue.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Yeah all of these "fixes" are merely temporary. All they are doing in storing the satelite info so they ock faster. If you reboot and turn off GPS for more than a few minutes it will start all over again. I will be paying VZW a visit tomorrow to see what they will do about since it seems not all phones are affected by this.
And I use my GPS a lot. The other day I was trying to find backway home and my GPS was so far off by the time it locked I was already stuck in traffic, had it locked normally, I would have been home free, my Droid1 would have never done this to me!!
I've only had issues with getting a lock after the GPS hasn't been used for a while. Lately, I've been wondering if some people who don't have issues have some type of app installed that periodically queries GPS? For example, I just installed the Asurion app that is supposed to check my location every hour. I haven't fully tested it yet, but now I'm wondering if this will keep GPS on frequently enough to the point where it won't have to re-start with the delay.
BTW... in early testing (when I first got the phone), I would wait to get a lock (maybe a minute), then after I got a lock I rebooted the phone and I still got an instant lock. So, once a lock is obtained, it seems like it keeps it for a while - even after a reboot. The main times I've had issues have been in the morning after the phone has been charging all night while asleep.

Yeah, I have a fascinate and so does my girlfriend. Locks both take minutes at the very least.
If this is hardware or if anyone has some legit theories, I'd like to know before my 30 days is up so I can de-root mine and exchange them both for phones that actually get a lock in a decent amount of time.
Got my evo yesterday, and last night while I slept the phone locked up requiring a battery pull, then did it again someone before I woke up.
Anyone had any issues with this? I was running juice defender on default setting, but not sure how that would affect anything
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
i didn't have those kind of issues, but my Notification bar wouldn't scroll down when i syped the screen and my home buttons wouldn't respond.
took it to sprint showed them the issue then the issue went away, they ran a diagnostic test on the device nothing came back wrong with it even after wiping the phone it would randomly do it. So they gave me a new device since then no problems.
The store basically told me it wasn't in their list of issues, so he couldn't do anything
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Tell them you'll just return the phone then. You want a new one they need to give you it.
I've had my phone for a week and I was having wake problems at random times each day. I did a hard reset on the phone with Sprint tech support three days in, and I also did a factory reset with a rep from HTC in online chat a day or two later. When I pulled my phone out of my purse to make a call today, it wouldn't wake up again so I brought it back to the Sprint store and they replaced it since I had already done everything they could have done for me there.
I'd just try to talk to another rep... good luck!

Don't listen that that. You just paid for a brand new device, which should work perfectly. It seems as though you have a defect in yours, and you're within the 30 days from purchase date. Under Sprint's 30 day return policy, you are entitled to exchange it for a properly working device, or just return it and tell the guy to go chew on marbles. Then go buy a new one from a different Sprint store.

So I went ahead and did a complete reset of phone data again, and installed only 2 apps, Google Voice and XDA
didn't lock up last night and has been up about 12 hours now without a boot
so far so good

finally it kept locking up and a few resets today so the manager at the store replaced it (next time I'm going straight to the manager, sheesh)
I don't mind (and expect) other little bugs, but my phone locking up (which is WORSE than resetting, because alarm clocks won't go off, etc and I was late for work) is a major problem when it happens half a dozen or more times a day
the new one has been doing much better though
if there a different way to wipe the phone that does anything different then whats in the settings area cause i beleive deep sleep battery saver screwed up my phone from 12am and during the night data and wifi switches off during the day im fine i uninstalled the app did all types of scenarios still didnt work
so then my last resort was wiping the whole phone and i did that via the settings menu and i still have the problem!!
i dont know how to get rid of this issue
Explain what issue your having in detail.

i posted this in a separate thread ...Since installing apps such deep sleep battery saver and longevity I've had a problem starting everynight at 12am when phone goes into deep sleep I lose WiFi and data I didn't have this problem prior to trying these apps I uninstalled them before I even noticed the problem tried reinstalling and setting things to disabled and uninstall again.
I have even wiped my phone at this point and I still have the problem..at this point I don't know which app it is i think its deep sleep battery saver since im pretty sure it started right after experimenting with that but I know I didn't have this issue prior it seems to obviously be on a schedule since it starts happening at 12
Another sign would be that it doesn't seem to happen when its on the charger which is another reason that would lead me to believe a battery saving app did something..now the question is how can I fix this especially if wiping didn't even fix it this is very annoying cause I rely on getting instant email notifications at all times and now I don't get them late at night if my phone is sleeping
ive contacted the deep sleep team through this site and contacted longevity as well to see if they have anything else to say..deep sleep was looking into it but im not sure what will come of that
That sounds like HTC's battery saving thing. Iirc from 12-6 if it is face down it'll turn off radios to save battery.

Are you rooted? If so, you can use Gemini App Manager to block any service or app, including system services that use excessive battery (make sure they're not vital to your phone first, though). If not, then please post a battery usage screenshot so we can see what apps are using your battery.

i am not rooted,at this point battery isnt the issue just getting this wifi/data issue to stop is but here is a screenshot i just took
im debating exchanging the phone for a replacement this week would i have any issue doing that im just going to tell them it started doing it out of no where
also before i do that can anyone confirm that this just isnt something i havnt noticed ...after 12am leave your phone alone for 25-30 min while connected to wifi or should even happen not on wifi but i have mine on wifi and wake the phone up and if you have it too you will see it reconnecting to both wifi and data
at this point just want anyone to confirm if i can get it replaced like i said cause ill probably just do that tomorrow

hey looks like your right i didnt think it was before cause the way you said it sounded like it happens when you put the phone face down only but it does seem to be a problem unfortunately that app doesnt work
even though it doesnt say it would work for the dna and it says root required this apk seems to work for wifi http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=34821894
i would love if i can get 4g not to disconnect to incase im not on wifi at that time
hope something more specific to the dna comes out that also lets you keep 4g
I can't believe that I'm posting a battery drain issue, but I'm new to Samsung and for the first time in years, I'm not rooted.
I've had my Note 3 for about 2-months. As a norm, I have no issue with the battery life that I get with this phone, being able to use it regularly throughout my long day, rarely ever needing to change it except overnight. However, on three occasions, a system app has appearantly hung up and drained the battery at an alarming rate, and at work around 1:00 or 2:00 PM, I'm getting a 15% battery warning instead of the usual 75% - 85% remaining.
Today it was the Gallery app. It was only used once late this morning when I made a screenshot, but discarded it. The previous time it was Maps, which I had not manually used, and the first time is was Google Search. All three different, the timing seemingly completely at random. I can determine no pattern to it..
Curious if anyone has observed similar behavior, and/or has any useful information on the topic that they might share.
Thank you for your time.

Yes. That service could indeed be tapped by all three of the applications that have been involved in these incidents. You thinking maybe its the location services that's tripping them up?

I may do that in an attempt to learn more detail about the issue, but the culprit is clear. Since first noticing the Gallery eating things up days ago, the attached image shows what has become the norm. Rebooting, closing the Gallery and clearing cache, etc., nothing changes this. The Gallery app has gone crazy. May try resetting the phone over the weekend and see if that clears up whatever has caused this.
Oh, just noticed "Tag Buddy" is enabled in the Gallery app. Killed it so I can see what effect that may have.

Thanks for the tips. I actually have all of them disabled. Didn't have time over the last few weeks to do so, but if I cna find the time I may try wiping the phone this weekend.
Well, yesterday I nuked the phone, factory reset. Went through the entire process to reset it up and guess what? The same frigging thing! I guess I'll nuke again today but no tlet any of the apps install. Just setup accounts, set my preferred configuration and see what happens. Then add apps back one at a time. Gonna take forever to get it back to where its useful on a dialy basis, but I cannot find any information anywhere regarding this issue. Wild to think of all the Note 3 users, I'm the only one experiencing this.
While I'm at it, my only other issue with this phone: anyone know of a setting somewhere to make the voice-to-text work well? I work for the federal government and speak clearly with decent annunciation, yet this device misunderstands worse than any device I've ever used. It gets things like not even close, and I'd love to find a way to make it work more accurately.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts or suggestions.
After reading a great number of posts all over the web, I resolved the issue. It was one of two things or both, or both and one caused the other. My micro SD card, taken from my old HTC Evo 4G LTE (Jewel),had been formatted using Ext4 which worked great, just as it had in my wife's identical phone. However, when I moved these cards to the new Note 3 phones, my phone seems to have had difficulty accessing some of the memory card. It cannot write to or delete from some locations. This may be why I found a folder of what appears to be pictures, but were somehow corrupted and could not be copied. There were scads of them so I've no idea how many images I've lost.
I copied everything that I could off onto my PC. Then I formatted the card from within the Note 3, probably crappy, old FAT, and finally copied what I needed back onto the card. The issue ceased immediately, so it was probably the Gallery app trying to identify/access those corrupted files, or something similar.
Live and learn, right?
Hey guys, weird thing has happened to be twice now. About a month ago I was watching tv and all of a sudden I heard my cell phone playing a Verizon XLTE commercial. As I was not using the phone at the time, I found it very weird. I picked up my phone and turned the screen on and the commercial was still playing but nothing was running in the foreground. I checked my notifications and nothing was their either. Checked running tasks and it was clear as well. I found it odd but didn't give it to much thought after that.
Well this morning (7am EST) the same commercial woke me up. I sleep with my phone next to me and tried to shut it off but I couldn't. I turned off data connection and placed the phone on silent and the commercial still ran. it repeated 3x and my wife told me to shut it off. I told her I couldn't and all I could do is mash it under my pillow and hope it didn't wake the kids.
I have looked online and asked friends but no one knows what I am talking about. my wife has a SIII with Verizon and her phone is fine. I am running N3BULA ROM on my Note II.
Anyone else know what I am talking about? it almost seems like a test ad that somehow I was lucky enough to pick up with my phone.
