Hello,
recently I have bought two devices HTC Desire X.
As those are first smartphones for my wife and myself we had made investigation and finally have chosen your device, it's really lovely and performing so far great. I'm impressed and really like them.
But we have faced several issues mentioned below and I'm looking for your support here, because those issues are really shame for such a great device and HTC name..
1. The biggest and serious issue we have faced is the white/hiss noise when we are on the call with another person. One of devices has higher level of noise than the other, but in both cases the noise is too much for a such device. Much cheaper and many other devices doesn't have such a noise. I've checked with other devices and other HTC devices as well as in internet and seems like a general problem with many of HTC devices. Many people complaining from the same noise which seems available at different level on different HTC phones, also available when listening to music.
I really hope it's a software issue, but seems more like HW one.
I've check HTC Desire HD - has a noise maybe a bit lower bit it's there, checked pretty old Samsung i5500 or something, but again android device and guess what it's not there or at very low level.
So it seems like it's not general android phone issue.
Even more, as I said on one of our DX is lower than the other, and it happened they have different ROM and being prepared for different operators and country.
The one with more noise is for Orange CH version 1.14.65.1, the other with lower noise got updated to 1.14.118.1 as it seems for T-Mobile PL.
Although it's more like a HW issue which is a real shame, I'm wondering whether it could be somehow related to different ROM version or it's been just a matter of luck.
I've wrote to HTC Support as well and will see.
2.. Calendar snooze function doesn't work as expected. When a calendar reminder appear and choose snooze in most cases the snooze is actually deleted and alarm will no longer remind again. It seems like a HTC general issue for more than a year, real shame.
In addition I have another question, how many times and at what interval the reminder would remind if we don't dismiss or snooze the event?
3. Bluetooth - although the phone has more than 1GB available memory for user application, we are not able to receive files via Bluetooth due to lack of SD card. Is there any fix or configuration, which would allow us receive files without SD card?
This seems to be a general Android issue fixed in 4.1, shame again.
So we have to try workarounds now, input SD card, take the files and then copy them to internal phone memory to be able to release the SD card, which leads to next finding.
4. The is no file browser included, so any good one to recommend from android store.
5. If I'd like to load on the phone my files for notifications and ringtones, how should I do it, and where should I place them in phone memory.
6. Battery notification for low battery level with a sound appear only once. Is there any way to configure low battery level notification with sound alarm more than once?
Again seems like general android stuff.
7. Sound profile - we are unable to find suitable sound profiles and easy activation. What I mean is to have few profiles with different ring tones and behavior, e.g. for a meeting to have vibration and beep once, and of course fast and easy way to switch the profiles. Is there such solution available?
Again seems like general android stuff.
8. It's a bit strange but on one of the phones Keyboard layout is qwertz not qwerty, any help how I can have a standard qwerty layout for English keyboard?
9. I've found two strange stuff in Contacts/people application
- first one is inability to add/change/set a given contact/person phone number to mobile type if already exist one of mobile type.
- second one even more strange, we can't find how we can assign a ring tone to contact group
10. Do you have or recommend any other software either PC or device Android different than HTC Sync, which does support wireless connection like Bluetooth to computer as HTC Sync seems to work only with cable connection /shame again/. Additionally what application can be used to make a backup of my phone - like contacts, calendar and so on , which may keep all formting like which one is the primary phone number for a given person if he/she has more than one number.
11. Both phones display colors are different, like they have different color temperature set, any way to fix it and can it be due to different ROMs?
12. I've noticed different indication for network connectivity, when both phones are at the same place and same carrier, one shows 3G+ while the other H.
- can it be due to different ROMs?
- is there any difference between H and 3G+?
13. Is it possible to take the ROM from one of the phones and load it to the other, so both of them would be identical and how?
I do really hope some of you can help us, because it's a real shame for such a great device with such issues, which are actually basic functionality for simple phones since 10 years and it's disappointing. Anyway I do believe there should be a solution as some of the issues seems application stuff which is HTC specific and doesn't exist in other android phones as Samsung.
The surprising funny and disappointing part of this is that is supposed to be smartphone, so may be makes our life easier, while with such a issues it turn into adventure and it behave like a tamagotchi game to look after all the time instead.
Thank you very much in advance
Most of the stuff you wrote are not issues.
3. Go to Settings/Storage/App storage location settings and set Phone storage for Bluetooth.
4. ES File Explorer.
5. Make folder named Ringtones on phone storage or SD card, put melodies inside and phone will see them. Do the same for Alarms and Notifications.
6. When battery level drops under 15% it gives you more than one notification sound, but not in the same time frame.
7. Here you can find additional HTC widgets, there's a profile widget it can set Ringing/Vibrate/Fully silent profiles. Also there's an app called Widgetsiod in Play Store.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2064891
8. Go to settings/language&keyboard/HTC sense input and set English for keyboard selection, I'm not sure if that will help but try. Also choose English for phone language.
9. No way to set ringtones to groups, only contacts. And only one type for a number, but you can set other as many times as you want.
10. HTC Sync Manager, not HTC Sync-it won't work. Sync Manager works only wit cable. There's an app called Moborobo or 91 PC Suite which works with wireless, but app page in application will make your PC antivirus go crazy. It will also install some Market App on your phone to some Chinese app market I recommend you to uninstall it as soon as Moborobo installs it on your phone after first connection.
11. It's because of rom. You can't take rom from one and put it to another, you can root both phones and install the same custom rom on both. You have the Index with a lot of useful stuff in my signature.
12. Again because of rom. 3G+ and H (HSPA) means the same.
13. I already gave you the answer in 11.
I hope I helped.
4. Total Commander

10. Try with Kies Air app from the play store... It's made by Samsung, but works with all devices.

3. Does not work as the setting Storage/App storage location is greyed out due to lack of SD card. So still getting the error not able to receive files via BT because there is no SD card. I'll try with pug the card in and set the settings, then get out the card and see.
8. That's what I have done, but doesn't help, even English keyboard and localization are with qwertz layout, that's due to phone is fow Swiss and localization is showed as English(Switzerland). Maybe I should find another locale in the marker or re-flash the phone with another stock image.
9. It's real shame, that's maybe the most important feature and reason to group the contacts at all.
13. OK, still not know to me what's the problem with that as both are stock images. Or any way to change the CID and finally have both phones at the same level.
Changing of CID is possible only if you s-off your phone cause it's stored on radio partition. For now there is no way to s-off it.

OK I see.
I just checked and my phones are ORANG216 on 1.14 no update, and T-MOB101 1.18 updated. So any way I can unlock, root ... so on to have unbranded and use RUU_PROTO_U_ICS_40A_HTC_Europe_1.18.401.1_Radio_10.21.40.06U_1.10.40.23_release
or have both as T-MOB101 1.18 , unbranded is preferred of course, but at least have updates on the first one, as Orange Switzerland are quite conservative and have no updates while T-Mobile had.

9. This seems to be a limitation of people application used in HTC. In Samsung devices both available, I'm wondering whether I can get new or replace current application and use those features.
It's strange but you may have more than one mobile phone per contact but you can't set it from the phone itself. If you get your contacts from another phone or from google you may have more than one mobile phone. Strange and illogical isn't it

Try to move you contacts to Google, not phone memory, this way you can put multiple mobile phones. What you described happens only for contacts stored in phone memory.

Hi all,
Just updating this as a little source of info incase anyone else searching finds my experience helpful!:
- Rooting: Decided not to do this until it's clear if offical updates work with it or not.
- Contacts: Created a google account which now syncs perfectly with the phone. All contacts are stored on the web account, so clearing the phone during resets isn't a problem - just put the Gmail details back in and everything is cool again
- File Manager: Using ES File Explorer from the market place (Free), works perfectly and lists all the files on the SD card.
- Network Usage: Using NetCounter from the market place (Free), works perfectly just keeping tabs on how much data has been sent over the cell or Wi-fi; breaking it down for usage on a daily basis, weekly, monthly and total. Also seems to support alert notifications so you can have your phone warn you when you've reached a certain amount of data.
- Case / Screen Protectors: Found a few online and Amazon however yet to purchase any (there are some reviews saying the rubber cases are too tight on the phone and start rubbing the surface colour off them.

This is somewhat crossposted as I don't know if this is a more suitable board.
Anyhow! I've been stuck with a XDA Exec for a number of years however today, after it started sending emails with text messages, I've ordered a new HTC Hero on Orange in order to replace the rubbish WM OS which was giving me no end of problems.
To cut to the chase I'm wondering when I get my device is there anything in particular worth doing, newbie questions I know but we all have to start somewhere! For example:
- Is it worth rooting? What exactly does rooting the device then allow me to do? (I've come across the process for doing it multiple times but I'm still none the wiser as to what this enables the handset to do)
- In line with the above is there anything worth doing to the device during setup to improve it's overall usability / performance?
- Are there are any particular apps that are worth putting on to improve performance? Giving control over the CPU maybe?
...etc
Any general advice for a new handset would be appreciated as I know there are some brilliant minds here (just finding all the relevant information is sometimes tricky!)
All the best,
Temjin
Yes a few things
before you start up the device create a google account online first, ie create a google email address eg. [email protected]
Then make sure you setup the phone with this address when it starts up, otherwise you may have problems accessing the market like me haha.
Copilot is a must its an excellent program, just as good as tomtom if not better.
i installed solitare as well cos i missed it off my old diamond.
As for rooting i as yet have not done so because there seems to be no real reason so far, installing apps and modding the phone is simple by adding widgets etc.
The phone runs as smooth as day straight out the box for me, but my phone is unbranded.
Hope that helps
Not much point to rooting yet, unless you want to have hundreds of apps installed (app2sd).
I would recommend that you remove the "people" widget as it is really not hugely helpful and slows the phone down a lot, especially when swiping from screen to screen. If you experience lag, you can also try removing the large clock widget and peep. Without these, the phone is much faster. (it's kinda sucky having to remove them but to be honest I'd rather a more responsive phone, personally). Check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=544958
Try to avoid using task managers and task-killers as these will cause more trouble than they are worth - let android manage processes and memory by itself.
Finally, don't go wild installing apps. Certain apps such as monitoring widgets cause havoc with the battery life, so install apps one or two at a time so that you will notice if performance or battery life suddenly plummets.

Oh when hard reseting
When you hard reset your phone if you ever need to, remove your simcard then put it back in after the reset, otherwise you lose you sim contacts like i have!!!
Hi guys!
I got my Hero on Tuesday and so far I'm absolutley loving it (although coming from WM 5.1 doesn't take much to beat ).
I've got a few more questions:
- When synced with Google Contacts a home address on the Hero is listed under "Find Home". This cuts the address short, is there a way of making it making the address field more presentable?
- Is there any native way for seeing how much data has been downloaded (gotta be careful of my tarrif limit!) or is there a simple app for this purpose?
- Is there anyway of browsing file directories?
- Is there any sort of protective cases or screen covers for the Hero?
In case it helps any other people who are looking for starter information:
- Rooting: Decided not to do this until it's clear if offical updates work with it or not.
- Contacts: Created a google account which now syncs perfectly with the phone. All contacts are stored on the web account, so clearing the phone during resets isn't a problem - just put the Gmail details back in and everything is cool again
Thanks!

You need an app, there is no native explorer. I have found ES File Explorer to be the best free explorer. It supports SMB network shares with ease too. No need to go through the hassle of connecting by USB and mounting the SD card to xfer files... you can just pull files directly over your network.
Hi Kiz,
Those two apps work fantastic! Thanks!
So, I’ve had the device for over a week now. I bought the phone as a spare one as I’m traveling abroad a lot and was tempted by navigation (Nokia Drive) and Zune subscription. The phone seemed to be a great option to put a local sim in.
But:
1. No way to change mms settings for local sim
2. Nokia Drive isn’t offline navigation as promised. It still needs the internet to calculate or recalculate the route.
3. Zune is impossible to use as there’s this annoying clicking noise while skipping the track
4. The ringtone and vibration is so soft that I keep missing a lot of phone calls
5. Facebook app for wp7 is a mess when it comes to messages section which I often use. Some messages come as text (baked in integration) some come via Facebook app and some don’t come at all (despite being notified by Facebook app). App developer advises to use web version to access the messages.
6.No WiFi priority (even if you’re in WiFi range and the phone is in standby it still uses 3G, rather than WiFi to get push notifications and sync with your email, calendar, etc)
Don’t get me wrong. The build quality and the screen is absolutely fantastic, but performing day to day tasks is a struggle! Oh, I don’t have the battery problem. Battery life’s been really great for me.
What do you think guys?
WiFi priority would make a big difference I reckon.
I've taken to switching 3g off when I'm either in the office or at home on a wifi network and it has noticeably prolonged battery life.
Nokia do need to have a look at releasing some software fixes sharpish. I read somewhere else that the two updates they are promising in the next month were on the cards before the phone went on sale which smack of a rushed release date to me.
Nokia maps does work offline at least mine does Yu have to download the maps for the country tough it won't just have maps for the world built in as that would take gigs of space

Hey buddy..
nice info buttttttttt
1) Navigation is offline if you have downloaded the maps and have gps on ... i tested it this morning with network off.....and it worked fine .
2) vibration has been mentionwd a few times and nokia are improving the strenth in the next update in a few days or so now so thats cool as i agree its to soft .
3) wifi priority is also being fixed in the next update along with xbox sync or straem to xbox thing its basically an app whoch you can link to your xbox and play music wirelessly through your tv or view pics on you phone through your tv etc ..
4) facebook are making a new app for windows 7 which will make it more like the iphone facebook app so that should be ready v v v soon .... well actually knowing fb a yrs time haha
5) zune is bollox i agree and hopefully we wont have to use it soon as i can see this phone being hacked v v soon to use mass storage
have a great day buddy and excuse my spelling lol i cant spell v well hahah
I don't get the Zune hate it is by a long long way the best media manager I have used though if i had a clock that would annoy me but I think thats something to do with your setup as mine dos not. Only thing I found is its a bit slow to start and its remote control is a use is a bit iffy. As for what its sposed to be used for is managing music a challange anyone to five a better easier smoother bit of software. Esp when ot come to album art and fixing track names etc

No. Nokia Drive doesn't work offline. Check here http://www.nokia.co.uk/gb-en/support/faq/?action=singleFAQ&caseid=FA136278_en_US
Zune is lovely if not this annoying clicking sound while changing track.
The problem is, the device is not really usable at the moment. I know, there will be updates, but why to rusj it to the market.
I want something that works out of the box rather than wait for updates.
Don't get me wrong. I love the device but at the moment it doesn't do what was supposed to do.
Seems perfectly usable to me.
On a side note all smartphones have issues on release however I don't see one which makes this phone unusable.
2. Nokia drive has offline maps.
3. No clicking sound on Zune for me.
4. Phone volume could be higher so I turn up the volume more than normal but isn't a deal breaker.

If this is true then the battery life will be pretty sweet I reckon. My phone has been on for 5 hours today so far with 3G off and has used 14% with lots of texts, couple of phone calls and an app install (bandwidth tester to check that I was using the wifi connection and not 2G). That's normal use for me and yesterday, I had used 25% by this time, so much improved.
Well how odd re offline maps I just tryed it again and dissable network and works fine ??? Unless it allows for the maps even though network is turned off ,?
You're trying to say that white is black! It doesn't work offline. You've got your offline maps, but if you want to search for POI or find a route it needs the internet connection.

I recently bought an HTC One that has been rooted and is running Android 4.3. Overall the phone seems to work properly but there are three frustrating things that I am struggling with (so far):
1) The photo gallery doesn't work - no images are displayed in the gallery even though they are saved in the phone's file system. Can't make new galleries. - This is not critical, I found a third party app that works, but it might be related to the other problems.
2) There are no sounds listed in the Ringtones/Notification/Alarm area and no ability to add any (+ is disabled). The default sounds worked until I tried to install a third party ringtone. Most of the apps crashed, but one app did say it installed the ringtone. Now I have no ringtone at all. Can't find the default 'cause it never showed and if a new one installed it is nowhere to be found, but I have no ringtone anymore. Almost as if the old default got unsuccessfully overwritten.
3) Never got any sync apps to work. HTC Sync Manager fails when trying to install drivers on my computer from the phone. I've tried all of the suggestions that I found regarding that issue.
I am a total noob on Android OS but know my way around Windows pretty well and Linux moderately. If it were a Windows or Linux computer I would think there is a path or permissions setting that is off, but I know nothing about phone OS. I don't want to become a Droid expert or learn the ins and outs of rooting or whatever. I just want a phone that works. I can find my way around the file system. Maybe I need to put it back to original OS? I have seen several articles on that and can probably handle it if I have to, but would rather get the current installation working properly. Any advise you can give is appreciated.

Hi,
This is my first time specifically posting a question as a Q&A style thread so I hope I'm doing this right.
I have been using the Redmi Note 2 for about a month now. Overall, it's been a great phone (especially considering the price). However, I've been experiencing a couple of issues and I am hoping that some of you may be able to help.
I have rooted the phone but have not installed a ROM/kernel.
I have been using Wakelock Detector to track my battery life. Of most significance is com.baidu.map.location (NetworkLocation). I have attached the two screenshots showing the frequency of how often it wakes up my device. I tried to greenify it but it wouldn't allow me - it says "Sorry, "NetworkLocation" is ingreenifiable". Does anyone have any idea for me?
I have also been trying to use Amplify as another means to try and improve battery life. As mentioned, my phone is rooted, and the app prompted me to install the Xposed app which I did. However, after installing the app, it wants me to install the framework but it does not allow me to. I have attached the screenshot of this too.
Nova Launcher - Sometimes when I open the app drawer, the resolution of the app launcher appears funny. To fix it, I normally just press back and go back into the app drawer and it goes back to normal. I have attached a screenshot of what this roughly looks like. This is not a big deal but can be a little annoying. Has anyone experienced this?
SD Maid - I used to use this app on my old Galaxy S3 i9305 to clear out storage space taken up by unnecessary stuff. This app no longer works on this phone. I have attached a screenshot of the issue that I am having.
I have downloaded Auto Call Recorder from the app store with the intention of having it automatically record my phone conversations. It does not work but I am unable to figure out why. I have checked the settings and I cannot identify any obvious setting that is incorrectly configured.
Flynx - I have been trying to use Flynx as it appears to be an incredibly useful app, but it seems something is not working correctly. In the screenshot that I have attached, where it says "Tap on the bubble to open it!" I am assuming there is a bubble that is supposed to appear for me to tap, but it does not appear.
APUS Launcher/Clean Master - finally and maybe most worryingly, I sometimes get 2 or 3 apps "pushed" to my device prompting me to install it. I can only remember 2 at the moment; APUS Launcher and Clean Master. Fortunately, I am asked to give the app permission for installation but it worries me because it has occurred a few times and I did not download it at all. I do not have a screenshot of this at the moment, but I will do it next time it occurs.
I have been told that my provider (Vaya in Australia) sends out a SMS for "automatic update" purposes. I only spotted this because I have noticed that I was charged for 2 separate international SMS on 2 occasions when I did not send them (to a UK number, +44 7786209730). I am not sure whether this one is a phone problem or something else.
I appreciate any of your assistance in advance and I am sorry if I have not provided enough information. I am also not sure as to which issues may simply be app problems as opposed to a problem with MIUI software or Xiaomi.
Hope I will be able to get some assistance!

Does the crash happen when the dialog opens, or when you click the orange entry?
Try giving your sdcard a name, possibly doing it from a desktop computer.
Hi, the crash happens when I click on "Overview" then click on "To start press [refresh icon]" and then you just press there - what normally happens is it will give a overall summary of the phone.
However, I have just tried it again. When that error message comes up, instead of tapping on the listed entry (as is instructed), I press "Done" and it is able to give me a summary!
So for some reason it appears as though it doesn't work (at least from the error message), and I just press done and it still works.
Thanks for your reply nevertheless! Would not have figured that out had you not replied hahaha.
If you just press "done", SD Maid won't have access to your external sdcard.
Did you try installing the Xiaomi EU rom, since it's supposed to be cleaned from chinese apps (Like the baidu one).
Hi all,
Sorry it seems like I never came back to expand what I have done to try and fix these problems.
I ended up changing to Hermes ROM here http://www.smiui.net/redminote2_hermes.php
Most of the issues above are now solved, but there are some that are still present such as #2 and #5. So Amplify still doesn't work, but I think this is a hardware limitation and Auto Call Recorder still doesn't work. As for why Auto Call Recorder doesn't work, I don't know why, but I am not greatly bothered by it so I have not attempted to do anything to resolve that problem.
I got this phone as gift. It was purchased in China, but I live and use it in the U.S. using English. Does anyone have any experience doing that?
I was able to get English versions of Yahoo, Skype and Facebook and am limping along with a Chinese Firefox installed, but I still have a numerous software problems:
1) Even in English mode, there are keys still in Chinese and almost all pre-installed Apps are still in Chinese (I can't even get it to "'auto-detect'" other than China time or show the temp in other than Celsius!?!) 2) I'm unable to download Google Play App. 3) Searches via the Chinese Firefox acts like I'm searching from China. I often have to explicitly search for / enter an URL to get what I want. 3) The specs here (at gsmarena.com) says it has a Radio and I see a "Radio" App listed, but I don't see an Icon for it (even in the Folders). 4) I haven't hooked it up to a cell plan yet, but I've read indications (and perhaps they're not for this exact model) that it will only work U.S. 4G or even 3G vs. 4G LTE. I'm Hoping to use it with T-Mobile 4G. It's got great specs, and I believe it costs ~$120 U.S. new, so even as a camera, mobile e-mailer, WiFi Browser, Facebook'er and 3G phone, it's a great deal. Appreciate any help or ideas to get help.

Sounds like you're having issues similar to what I had. Never fear! I am in almost the exact same situation.
I got mine from GearBest last September shortly after it came out because it was such a good deal for the hardware you get. However, I knew ahead of time, and I'm sorry to tell you, that it will not work with T-mobile's 4G LTE. It will, however, work with T-Mobile's HSPA+ (I think it's still considered 3G but it's also sorta better than 3G? Every cell provider uses the same names to refer to totally different technologies, so it's all very confusing.). HSPA+ is more than enough for me; you can still stream 1080p video without buffering as long as you've got a good signal. Maybe web pages won't load instantaneously, but whatever.
My main issue right off the bat was that there was some preinstalled app absolutely draining my battery. The phone was hot most of the time and died by mid afternoon with limited usage. So I needed to fix it.
I'm inferring from your request that you haven't yet tried to root the device. This is the main way I know of to fix your problems. It will allow you to install any of the custom ROMs people share on this site as well as manage preinstalled apps and utilize other apps on the play store that require a rooted device to work.
Disclaimer: Google around and visit other guides for custom ROM installation before you follow this. I may have missed something as I'm typing this up mostly from memory. Your milage may vary, and it's important to make absolutely sure that you know what you're doing so as to avoid bricking your phone.
Basically, all you need to do is:
0. Make sure you have an SD card. I don't know if it's a necessity or not, but it's useful for keeping data like music, backups, and other ROMs stored where the data doesn't need to get wiped every time you install a new ROM.
1. Find the ROM you want to use. I am currently using MoKee by Bule because I've been having battery troubles with virtually every other ROM for some unknown reason. I'd also recommend the official Xiaomi.eu international ROM if you want to continue using MIUI, or Daniel's CM 12.1. Put the downloaded zip onto your SD card. If you don't have an SD card, you'll have to find another guide to help.
3. If necessary, visit openGapps to download the google apps you need to access the play store. Some ROMs come with it, some don't. The ROM's page should tell you. Put it next to the ROM on your phone.
2. Follow this guide to install the MiFlash tool (which you won't necessarily use) which will install all the drivers you need to flash TWRP. You don't necessarily need SuperSU (I don't have it installed), especially if you don't want to mess around with a lot of apps that require a rooted device. Every ROM I've used has some form of built-in root management (though I'm by no means a professional with this stuff).
3. Boot into recovery as suggested in the guide. Go to wipe, advanced wipe and select everything except for Micro SDCard. Swipe to Wipe.
4. Go back to home, install, select storage, Micro SDCard, and find wherever you put the zip of the ROM you downloaded. Select it and Swipe to confirm Flash.
5. If necessary, repeat for the google apps zip.
6. It should take a minute or two to install. Clear cache/dalvik cache if it gives you that option and then reboot the device.
YAY, you should have a clean, functional device free from most Chinese bloatware although this depends on which ROM you install. Some are still Chinese by default but should have readily accessible English options upon startup. Sometimes you need to reboot after selecting English and finishing the startup in order for a few of the Chinese characters to switch to English for some reason. If the default keyboard is still wacky, do your best to make your way to the play store and install google keyboard or whatever other option you desire.
Hope this works!
