Hi guys I'm a newly registered user but by no means new to the site. I'm having trouble with my Thunderbolt's Wifi getting hung up on "Wifi Turning On".
To give you a background, I was using Licquid ICS MR2 when this all started. It ran flawlessly since MR2 came out and I flashed it. I tried fixing permissions, that didn't work. I've tried multiple radios to see if that would help, that didn't work. I formatted data and wiped dalvik and cache using ext4. Installed MR2 over again, still the same. I followed the same process and upgraded to MR3, still the same. I also tried ICY-S thinking maybe that version of the ROM was causing it. Still doesn't work. So i'm back to MR3 at this point. I still get 3G and everything else seems to work great.
The only thing that I've noticed that has been different is recently I started receiving 4G service in my area (small town). I've tried turning data off, tried turning LTE off. All with no luck.
Is there a chance that my wifi adapter could be damaged or does this sound like more of a software issue? Any help would be great.

Yeah I have this problem usually after a while it does turn on but I think it's a bug in the leaked ICS build just wait for the rooted OTA to be posted and that'll probably fix it.

Its a new problem though for me. It always turned off and on when I asked it to. The normal data problem where you have to turn wifi off and on again always happened to me but I knew how to handle that. This just started happening, I guess I'm not understanding how all of a sudden this just starts happening. I hope that rooted OTA comes quick.

Tried the radio that santod posted. It gets me 1X that's it, but its pretty fast so there's no way its only 1X. But that didn't help the wifi cause any.

I'm running dasBAMF 2.0.6, the mr2 radio, and the kernel I'm using is 2.6.35.13-imoseyon-3.0.1GBtest1-hg928417061161-dirty. Needed to tether for the first time since getting my tbolt yesterday and it all works fine until my screen shuts off (locks). At that point my 3G data drops off and my tether loses Internet access until I turn my screen back on. I've poked around in my settings and was unable to find anything that seemed relevant to the issue. Anybody else encounter this and come up with a fix?

The problem is with the wifi sleep policy I believe, I think there is a fix for it in his kernel thread. Not totally sure about it because I never really tether, but I have seen other people post about a fix for that problem, either in the kernel thread, or the bamf thread.

Looking around for the tether fix, but so far I'm finding nothing. If anybody has a link for the thread, I'd appreciate it.

That's what I'm saying, i believe it is, check for the wifi sleep fix in the kernel thread, I think that's where it is.
It's not a tether fix, I think the file is wifi_sleep_fix.zip
Still having trouble locating either the tether fix, or as you said, the more likely wifi sleep fix (or similar). About to try a different kernel entirely and see what kind of result that may have. Appreciate the effort all the same, but I'm starting to think I'm either blind or said fix is no longer listed.
*EDIT* Looks like the functionality is baked into the kernel....
v2.8.1test1 (6/3/11) - 2nd attempt at screen off sleep for 3g/4g without breaking 2g.
Thinking that very well may be the source of the issue.
Issue is still ongoing with BAMF 2.1 remix. Tried numerous kernels with the same result. If anybody has any ideas I'm still all ears (or eyes I suppose). Additionally, with the phone plugged in and charging, the screen can go off and continue tethering with no issues. Have my wifi sleep policy set to never. Would appreciate someone verifying the same behavior on their device (ie data stops while tethering when screen goes off) just to verify it's not just me encountering this.

I have been having some issues with the Gin-Sen-Tazz Rom for Eris. First of all, this ROM is AMAZING. It is extremely smooth and easy to OC my Eris on this one. The only problem is that my data just drops on its own. Now, I've been wanting to list this on the [FIX] 3g Data drops on GB Sense Roms Thread but couldn't due to my less than 10 posts (or post it on the actual Gin-Sen-Tazz ROM thread). I'm not sure if my problem is the same as those on the [FIX] 3g Data drops on GB Sense Roms Thread. I've done those steps but still it just drops. The way it does it, usually when the screen is off and after a while of inactivity, it just goes out (the whole 3g/data). As if I manually turned off the data. When I try to turn it on (either via the widget/shortcuts or through Settings) it just say "turning on..." but doesn't. I have reverted back to a different ROM but remember something saying about..."Radio" something something in the "Wireless Networks / Mobil Network" check box. The data will never turn on unless i Restart the phone and even then it turns off after a while. I've installed the ROM MANY times, done all the wipes, all the Reverting Back to Stock and all that and avoided doing the *228 AFTER the ROM install. I'm hoping one of you genius' who are inventing these things, and by the way - GREAT JOB! could help me out. Please let me know if I need to add something to this lengthy question.

Thanks for putting this in the dev forums for us... I'll have to load up gst in the am and check, but if I'm not mistaken, there are some powersave settings that might affect that. I'll report back tomorrow.

I'll do some digging around when I get a chance too. What radio are you using BTW? Not 100% certain its that but I know on inc certain radios don't play well with gb sense. I know when I was running gst with the hero radio I didn't have and data issues but I did with the radio from Eris ota. I'll do some digging though and see if I can find anything. One thing you can try in the meantime though. Instead of rebooting, have you tried switching airplane mode on for a few seconds then back off? Doing this usually got my data back on for me instead of having to reboot.

The 3g drop is a known issue w/that rom. It happened daily to me the entire time I was using that rom. If you reboot the phone, like the others said,you will get the data connection back. I think the airplane mode trick works too.

Yes, Sir. Works like a charm...I'm using xtraSENSE right now and it works great. I've noticed, you know how on some phones/ROM's you can go into settings and have it automatically turn off data after so long of not using it. I've had that option on my Thunderbolt (when the screen is off) and when you turn on the screen the data connects, well, its kind of like that, except, it never connects and the setting reads something like "Connecting to....." can't remember the rest. I've noticed the xtraSENSE automatically disconnects data but connects perfectly when I turn on the screen.

CS, yep I've tried the Airplane mode. When I do that, the mode turns on, when I turn it off, the data still does not connect...as far as Radio, I'm not sure where to find that (I even tried googling it). However, when I used that link to revert ALL back to stock and there was that option to do the radio thing as well, I did that step, too. I hope that helps and thanks a mill!

Yep, Powersave Settings lol that's the name I was looking for on my previous post. And that's a great way to explain it. I think, if that ROM had an option to turn that powersave feature off, I think that would be nice only because it would not turn off on its own. But that just seems more like a shortcut and I'm certain that, for you guys, its a piece of cake to get to the root of the glitch.

Yeah, I wish it'd work for me. Its a great ROM, I'd put up with it until it would get fixed.

I'm ganna try turning the power save feature off on this Rom and see if that works. Great idea, never noticed that before. Only thing is for me it seems to happen more often when I receive a text or a phone call when my phones locked (or "off"). I did notice that when my phone is active and I'm using it, I see the data turn off (3g icon disappears) and I just get my phone signal, whenever I recieve a text or phone call. I have not noticed this before on other roms. But then again, I have been known to be very un-observent before....

Dunno if anyone is still following this thread, but I've had a small breakthrough with the data drop issue in the sense gb roms 3g drop issue. I had power saver mode disabled all day yesterday and my 3g never dropped! Still to early to say if this is actually working or if i was just lucky, but in my experience my 3g would drop at least 1 time a day and sometimes more. So far so good. I will report back again in a couple of days of testing to let you know if this is a working "fix".

I was having those issues too...I actually switched to a different ROM because it was so bad. the new condemnedsoul and GSB don't do that anymore.

Everything is great on it except for my wifi going out every 2-3 minutes then coming back. I even re flashed it twice and it still is doing it. What could be causing this issue? I looked through the entire thread and no one else is complaining about it. I'm going to have to go back to UNnamed for a bit in the meanwhile.

Similar issue on wifes bone stock phone 2 days after receiving. Would connect to router fine, but drop internet every 2 to 3 minutes. Exchanged it.
My Phone (bone stock) lasted 27 days before the internet stopped connecting. Again router would connect fine. I did extensive net searching for the issue and found that turning the "Airplane" mode on and off would allow it to connect briefly.
Exchanged it.
"Expert" guesses blame either the motherboard or GB 2.3.4. Most people I read about had the issue after upgrading to 2.3.4.
I found the problem will get worse untill you cannot connect to the internet at all unless you use Data.
Possible fix
I had the same issue. My data connection on wifi would constantly stop working until I went in and out of airplane mode. I went into recovery and cleared the cache and it seems to have fixed it (at least for now). Been running fine for a day.
Clearing the cache can help many times. Best to wipe it before and after any flash, just to make sure.
Usually it's not needed to go back to 100% stock to flash a new rom. But if you're having issues, try it out. Make sure to wipe everything you can in recovery and on the phone (backup your files).
Again, not saying that it's a 'necessary' step, but it will rule out most possible user issues.

That's not rooted stock, that's a leak.
A leak which happens to be known to have wifi issues with custom kernels, shoman94 thought he fixed them but maybe he didn't.
When mine was acting up I was unrooted on stock. Clearing the cache appeared to have fixed it.

Are you saying you were on unNamed and it worked fine? Did you go back to unNamed and its fine again?

Yes sir. Was on unNamed before worked fine. Switched back to it after trying the leaked 2.3.6. out and the wifi worked fine again.

Weird... I'm Using it just fine.
I was having WIFI issues at home when stock and rooted running Unnamed. The phone wouldnt stay connected for more than a couple minutes then i would have to enter and exit Airplane mode to get it to reconnect. I decided to buy a different router to see if that made a difference and this solved my problem. I had a Belkin N band which was replaced by a Netgear N600. Now i have better range and it stays connected all the time. I know this doesnt sound like the issue you had but I figured I would post in case anyone else reads this thread and is having issues.

The other day actually with the 2.3.6. leak I did get around to testing with another router(someone elses in the area apparently). My phone never lost connection once with it. But, when I switched back to using the router in my home, my connection wouldn't last no more than 2 minutes before going out then reappearing.
You had the same problems with UnNamed as I did with the 2.3.6 leak.
I've been running UnNamed practically for a while now and haven't had a single problem with the wifi.
That's odd.
As it says in the post, my Photon's 3G and Wifi stay on simultaneously. There is no handshake being done to settle which one is supplying the current stream of data and I can't figure it out. Sometimes the only way to settle things to get it to work right is to either turn off Wifi to let it settle to 3G, or turn off mobile data to let it settle to Wifi. I get between 2 and 4 bars here.
I've tried doing a factory restore, wiping internal and application storage... but when I got back to the home screen, all my settings were still the same including the desktop background, ringtones and a few other settings. The applications obviously were gone.
I then tried SBFing to 154_5 but I could see the icons doing it again before I even tried to activate. I had planned to let it just update to 198_6 OTA and hopefully fix the problem in the process, but I just came from that so I don't see it fixing it this time.
I'm in the process of SBF'ing 198_7 since I hear it has a 'data fix'.
Anyone have similar issues or resolve?
I once had a problem where 3G turned off when my wifi came up, then never came back on. I had to factory restore it. As for your hand off issue, I've never had that particular case happen. If you're going to stay stock I'd definitely try 198_7. Why not play with CM7 thought? I've been waiting for it to stabilize a bit, finally jumped in with the 1/26/12 build and it has been working awesome for me.

I can't find a raw CM7 build. The only ones I'm finding are people's weird ROM's of it...
In all actuality you shouldn't have to touch anything. I personally leave 4G and wifi on all the time. If the phone can't get a WiMAX signal then it automatically switches to 3G or roaming. The photon automatically switches between 3G and 4G as necessary.

Yes, well it's supposed to anyway. Mine doesn't. It does multiple simultaneously.
i have seen this many times on my mopho. also when im on stock and try to turn on wifi its say error and stays like that unless i reboot about 4 times
Fix for Wifi
Sorry to ask about this, but is there a fix for the wifi connection for unlocked photon? I've been looking for hours and I'm coming from the nexus s 4g so I've had it easy. I'm on cm 7.2 and needs some sleep. Thanks for tolerating my noobness.

Replace dhd.ko under /system/lib with dhd.ko from stock version.

T-Mo Amaze, stock rooted, using second newest ROM (not the R2 radio).
Radio is acting funky. It shows no signal on boot where I normally have 4 bars. Cycling through airplane mode usually gets it working after a few tries. Sometimes 4g data come on too, not always. When I try to fix this problem using the quick settings on/off switch, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. If all else fails, I reboot and I'm back at the beginning of this paragraph.
Wifi seems to get "stuck" off as well. I can usually get it working through a similar process as the main radio.
Tried clearing cache and dalvik and fixing permissions. No luck.
Ideas?
Tried reloading the ruu? Possibly the very one you didn't.

This happened to me before, along with the random reboots. Had so much problems I kept doing the ruu. Then r2 came out. I downloaded and flashed and put new battery I got from T-Mobile for 5$ since I have insurance and all problems disappeared. I not sure if it was combination of both or just the ruu since I had already ran it but must of been a bad download so also check md5.
