Contacts lost after ROM upgrade - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!!
Can anybody give me a hand with this trouble:
Last night, I upgrade the ROM of my SGS2 from 4.0.4 (official) to 4.2 (cyanogenmod) using CWM. The ROM that I installed was downloaded from "Cyanogenmod download" (I can't post the link, but downloaded the 2013-02-04 09:32:39 version for SGS2).
Before I start the process, I made a backup with Titanium app.
When I finished the upgrading, I restored the backup, but my contact list wasn't restore!!!
I looked for in Titanium and it said that my contact list was backed up successfully, but can´t restore my contacts (Doesn't show an error detail or something)...
On the other side, I have a backup that I made a months ago with Samsung Kies, but when I Try to connect my S2 to Kies...it always stays "connecting" and doesn't show any progress. Then, I unchecked the "USB Debugging" mode --> unplugged the phone, restart the PC and Phone, installed the drivers and connect the phone again to my PC and I got the same result, the cellphone doesn't connect...Always appear "connecting" and nothing happens...
Is there any way to restore the contacts backup made by Titanium or the Kies backup in this new ROM???
May I use another program (not Kies) that I can use to restore the Kies backup???
Thanks a lot for your help!!!

Titanium will keep your contacts, logs and sms IF you choosed Backup System Data through the backup process. Contacts and Messages are system apps, they are not backed up by defaulf, you have to do that manually. That's because restoring sytem apps to a new ROM different from the previous one always became to conflicts. If its not done i assume the story becomes harder.
Did you used GMail in your previous rom? It has a option to backup contacts. Also why just not save contacts to your SIM card...that always work for me.

Just re-add your google account and your contacts will be re0-synced to phone. (Google account automatically backs up your contacts/calender etc)

I used a google account, but that account was not syncing contacts...
Is there anything else that I can do???

Kies will not work if you have custom ROM in your phone.
It will be time consuming but what you can try to do if your contacts have not been stored with google is to flash stock samsung firmawe with Odin. Then restore your contacts with Kies, back them up witch google account or export to file and then root your phone again and flash custom firmware.

Yeah,
If I don't have any choice, i have to do that!
A lot of work, but nothing to do...
thanks for your help!!!

First titanium backup is not recommended for CM10.1 see this
Second go to kies, the contacts you saved ,It will be in .spb
first find that file in your pc and copy to other location. (backup if you lost file in case)
then in kies select save as and select save as vCard file and all your contacts will be stored individually in your pc.
connect phone and put all contacts in phone internal storage
open contacts > menu button > import/export > import from storage
you will find all your contacts in few moments...
and then backup to Google account:good:

And now you can import contacts to the google account and enable to synchronize to the phone.
The hardiest way is to completly back to stock rom, synchronize contacts from kies to phone. And then go to Contacts, Export to sd card, re-flash new rom and go to Contacts and import to the phone backup from sd card... Backup on sd card is stored as xxxx.vcf file in the root of sd card
A was similar issue with my old Nokia and backup through the Nokia PC SUite, but a was some contacts stored in Outlook, and solution was synchronize through Nokia PC suite.
If you changing roms enable synchorinzation to the google account. this is easy way to have a backup...

Hate to be the one to tell you this, but this is why you backup when you are NOT having problems, only takes a minute to run the PIMbackup program, or to make sure you have a recent sync. Could stay synced with Gmail OTA .
Someone else may have a better idea , maybe backup your cemail file, not sure if that works.
Good plan is to sync or backup at least once a week, if not more.
Or if you use the MS Myphone app it does it nightly , syncs whatever you have selected.

Hi All,
What is the software that cause this error to happen? Is it the Backup and Restore software from Sony Ericsson?
If you are using the B&R software from SE, there is a mini text underneath the selection which states that Contacts Synced using Sync services will not be backed up. In other words, Google, Sony Ericsson Sync and etc will not be backed up.
I restored my Contacts successfully. Here what I done
1) Reset to factory default
2) After the phone restarts I did not do any setup. I skipped all including email and contact setup.
3) Left the phone idle for 30 mins so things could settle.
4) Went to Backup and Restore and selected only Contacts and call log (No messaging or other Stuff)
5) Done. After 99% it says it done but my contacts got restored.
how did u reset it to defaults?
Setting -> Privacy settings -> Factory data reset.
Thanks. It worked for me too. I didn't wait but restarted immediately.

[Q] Backup before custom recovery.

I wanted to flash custom recovery but i want to backup the contacts and apps of the phone memory.
1.Do I need to use Titanium Backup.
2.If yes then only apps on phone memory should be backed up or the ones on the sd card too.
3.And also can i keep the titanium backup folder on my pc and put it back in the sd to restore. will it work?
4.And finally what does the create update.zip option on titanium backup means?
Please someone answer so i can start on the custom recovery.
Thanks in advance.
As far as your contacts are concerned... just sync all contacts to your Google account.
If you use titanium backup for apps you CAN copy the backup folder to your computer then back on your phone afterwards. It does work. As far as the create update.zip, it does just that. It creates it to be flashed in recovery.
Sent from my nuclear powered submarine!
Update.zip is created to install the Titanium backup application on recovery mode through flashing the zip file.
It's actually easier if you go to your contacts, press menu, and go to the import/export option. There you'll be given the choice of exporting your contacts to the SIM or the SD card. If you choose the latter, it'll generate a backup CSV file which can then be imported. Tried this even from FroYo to GB
- Backup contacts: 2 ways
+ Contacts -> Menu -> More -> Export. It exports all contacts to a .vcf file on sdcard. Copy this file to ur PC. Then if u want ur contacts back, move it to ur fone and Import
+ Use LG PC Suite to sync with Microsoft Outlook. When u have new rom, sync them back.
- Backup apps: Tita Backup
- "can i keep the titanium backup folder on my pc and put it back in the sd to restore. will it work?" YES
iy you want to backup sms also, use sms backup and restore from market
good luck.

[Q] Whatsapp cannot restore backup!

I've been trying to restore my chats from my Galaxy Fit with whatsapp version 2.11.175 to my Galaxy S3 Neo with whatsapp version 2.11.238 with no success! I transferred my sd card which contains the whatsapp folder(old). It didn't work. So, I copy/pasted the database & several other folders that weren't there in the new folder (the 2.11.238's folder) from the sd card one and reinstalled the app. This time it asked if I wanted to restore the found backup or not...to which I clicked the restore button...After few seconds, I got an error saying it couldn't restore & continued synchronizing. >_<
Is there a way to restore all the chats? Without rooting?
Please help guys! Thanks in advance!
The whatsapp folder in sdcard only include some audio files and pictures/videos, not your chat history. Since you are non-rooted user, you can try helium (download from playstore). It can be used without root to backup data of your apps (of course this includes your whatsapp account and chat history), but you will need to install a pc client to help you on that. It's very easy to set up, head over to the playstore and give it a try!

Moving Whatsapp to another (older) device for backup

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 and three years worth of Whatsapp conversations. I saved the backup files from WhatsApp folder onto my computer, and did the Google Drive backup. I also used WhatsApp Viewer to save the chats onto my computer. It was unrooted so I used the Key DB Extractor to get the key. The biggest one with most messages only opens in txt format and crashes in html format, I assume because it's too big and the whole html file fails to load.
Now I got my Galaxy S5 rooted (for easier future chat exports through WhatsApp Viewer) and haven't reinstalled WhatsApp yet. I'd like to start fresh and decline the prompt to restore my root. However, before I do it, I was wondering if I can transfer this latest backup onto an older phone, an unrooted Samsung Galaxy Young 2. It's used but previous owner did factory reset. WhatsApp isn't installed on it yet. I wouldn't be using Whatsapp on two phones simultaneously, I'd use the Galaxy Young just for backup and would transfer the backup only once.
Is Galaxy Young too old to open such a huge backup file and/or to even run the latest version of WhatsApp?
What's the way to do it? I found this tutorial but it requires both phones to be rooted, and allows you to use Whatsapp on both, which is not what I need.
WhatsApp website says I should do this:
To restore a less recent local backup
Download a file manager app.
In the file manager app, navigate to sdcard/WhatsApp/Databases. If your data isn't stored on the SD card, you might see "internal storage" or "main storage" instead of sdcard.
Rename the backup file you want to restore from msgstore-YYYY-MM-DD.1.db.crypt12 to msgstore.db.crypt12. It's possible that an earlier backup may be on an earlier protocol, such as crypt9 or crypt10. Don't change the number of the crypt extension.
Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
Tap restore when prompted.
I have the latest msgstore.db.crypt12 file, the SIM card my WhatsApp was used with, the msgstore.db file, the wa file and the key.
Will my current phone, Galaxy S5, give me issues when I try installing WhatsApp on it after I install it for backup onto Young 2?
Also, another question, how do I install WhatsApp on my rooted S5 onto the SD card and not internal memory?
Thank you for your help!
