Hi,
I also have this strange kernel Is this still the newest for this kernel? And which of the two do I need?
XWLSD or XWLS8?
Can anyone explain why the kernel version on this S2 is written differently than most? Its pretty hard to figure out which files to use.
Thank you in advance.

Siyah kernel v6 beta 5 is a custom kernel for JB, be it XWLSD or XWLS8.
If you want flash a rooted kernel that matches ur stock kernel, look for Philz kernels.

Scroll down the Philz thread and look for latest XWLSD kernel.
Download it and flash.

XWLSD (fixed for bootloop)
mv18gm....87-signed.zip

Yup, that's it!
Zip file is for flashing via stock recovery (but u need external SD card). It has the advantage that you don't need to use a PC and doesn't void ur warranty.
Tar file is for flashing via Odin.

Also looking for a good guide how to install costum firmwares once I did the rooting. This is a big forum for beginners.

Rooting will not affect ur apps or their data.
Flashing the wrong kernel of a different device can brick ur phone. Flashing the wrong kernel of a different android version will cause bootloops.

I understand that this is an old post but I just got ahold of a S2 with the same build/kernel etc...
I see two set of one zip file and one tar file in your link. Noted the XXLSD and XXLS8.
If I use the stock recovery method do I need both of the 2 zip files? Or just the one? I'm confused because my baseband ends with XXLS8 but my buildnumber ends with XWLSD...
Hope I'm not asking a stuipid question here

[Q] question about my kernel and PhilZ-cwm6 v4.87 with CWM 6.0.2.8

Hi,
I want to flash my first phone but I have a hard time getting answers. My phone displays the kernel version differently than the guides tell. Now I understand I need XWLDS but with LS8 modem. Is this correct and is how can I find out if the version below has this?
04.03.2013 - PhilZ-cwm6 v4.87 with CWM 6.0.2.8 based recovery >>
XWLSD (fixed for bootloop)
mv18gm....87-signed.zip
tau1po...X-4.87.tar.md5Also including this link where I started the discussion. Why is my kernel displayed differently and what is it exactly?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2139040
Thank you in advance,
Vel
And u had to make another thread for that?
Since u don't seem to trust my opinion, I shall explain how to select the correct Philz kernel.
1. Look up the build number of ur firmware in 'Settings - About Phone'. It will be something like XWLSD or XWLSN.
2. Look in Philz thread for the latest version that is the same as ur build version.
Simple!
P. S. The LS8 or whatever given in the Baseband version is ur modem's code. It has NO role in selecting the correct rooted kernel.

I trust it but I also would like to know why since my kernel displays differently.
I cant use comments like "just do it". Phones for me are expensive so I like to understand things before I do them.

In a nutshell:
For Philz, look up Build version.
For CF Kernels, look up kernel version.
To see which modem u have, look up Baseband version.
Do let us know what happens!

Will do. From your writing I understand that I also have to look for kernel version when installing a costum? Thus there are more versions of the same cf?

Just like Philz has many kernels, so does CF Root (look up the CF kernel thread).
However, you can use either CF or Philz to root, but NOT BOTH.

Use Siyah kernel to root.
SD card stands for your internal SD memory, not the external SD card. Just copy it to ur phone, that's all.

Saying ur a noob is no excuse for not searching mate. All it takes is some good old reading and a little common sense.
Siyah kernel is actually compatible with all versions of android, including 4.0.4. But you must be careful to choose the correct version of Siyah that matches ur firmware.
It doesn't matter what kernel u have, because after flashing it will be replaced by the kernel included in the SuperNexus rom.
For a good tutorial, u can use search or check out the stickies in the Q & A section.
Feel free to ask any doubts u may have.

Replying to ur PM:
When u are going to root, u should look at the firmware u have now, and choose the correct kernel. Don't look at the rom that u are planning to flash.
Siyah v5.0.1 is the latest kernel for ICS, and hence is a good choice. You can use it to root now.
To get SuperNexus (or any other custom rom), u need a working CWM recovery to flash the rom.
Flashing Siyah kernel via odin will install this CWM recovery. You only need to follow the instructions given in the rom's thread after that to install.
There was no good rom,
there is no good rom,
and there will be no good rom..
Because it all depends on what suits u best (which only u can tell after trying).

That tutorial uses a CF kernel to root, instead of Siyah kernel. The difference is that CF is simply the stock kernel while Siyah is a custom kernel. You can use both to root.
But on 4.0.4, there is always a risk of using CF kernels due to eMMC Brickbug issue. That's why I suggested Siyah, which is 'safe'. I'm not sure if ur device has the risk of brickbug, but its always better to be safe than sorry.
If you still want to use the stock kernel to root, u can try Philz kernel (its also 'safe').
P.S. The CF kernel in the guide u posted is not the correct version u require. CF kernels and Philz kernels are stock kernels, so u have to find the one that closely matches ur stock kernel.

CWM stands for ClockworkMod. It is a custom recovery. For more info about CWM:

Is the custom recovery that you can use for flashing custom ROMs, among other things.
You got 3 choices:
1) flash siyah v5 via Odin (It'll give root + CWM.
2) Root with ExynosAbuse app from chainfire and install CWM via recovery.
3) Install CWM, SU & BusyBox via recovery
My suggestion?
Read more, learn more and watch a video, or two.

[Q] How to root DDLPA ICS 4.0.3

Hello there,
I just got my phone i read alot and searched a lot too but still but able to find direct root method for root my DDLPA firmware.
May any one please guide me with this.
here is screeshot of my phone about http://i.imgur.com/8bw48WK.jpg
so we can clearly see kernel is XWLP7
may CWM for XWLP7 will work on DDLPA?
Waiting for flashing :silly:
DDLPA is the baseband (modem) version. It has no role in selecting a root kernel. Only look at the kernel version (XWLP7) and choose the matching cf kernel.

DDLPA is the baseband (modem) version. It has no role in selecting a root kernel. Only look at the kernel version (XWLP7) and choose the matching cf kernel.

If you want to root it,follow along.Download this file, and put it on your phone`s EXTERNAL SD! card. Now reboot into Recovery. In recovery, select "Install update from external storage", or something similar, and search the downloaded file.Install it.Now reboot. You don't have to wipe anything. That's it!
Press Thanks if you succeeded

From what I read above, I understood this:
- Either u haven't read like u were supposed to
- Or you have no idea about this stuff
Which is it?
BTW, ur looking for Philz kernel (zip file).

You need CWM to flash custom ROMs as well as root.
You can get both by flashing a custom kernel.
Which custom kernel? You can find suggestions all over Q&A.
You ca. use any custom kernel with a custom ROM but It'd be wise to stick to the dev suggestion, on the custom ROM thread.

DL and flash from your SD card Philz 5.00.4 XWLSS (fixed) kernel and custom cwm. This will also root you.
Then you can flash from international memory whatever custom rom you wish.
