So what's the deal with sms notifications? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Not sure if this is a Note 2 thing or an Android thing, but I don't remember having this problem with my Evo 4G.
Right now my sms tone doesn't play correctly, it's like the first half of it gets skipped. People say it's because I have too many texts and I need to delete some of them. I think it's kind of ridiculous that I have to do that. I never deleted texts on any of my previous phones and never had this problem. I don't remember if it did it stock because I rooted and flashed almost immediately lol.
So far it's done it on CleanROM and Beans 7.
Is there a way to fix this or are we seriously forced to delete messages every so often? I already have auto-delete turned on but it doesn't help.

I always had that problem on my GS3, not the Note 2 yet, but it didnt matter how many messages I had or if I didnt have any at all it always cut off half of the tone. It did it to me on stock before I rooted and unlocked and after, it did it on TW and AOSP also.

So what's causing it? It's kind of strange that everyone is so nonchalant about it.
Like "yeah my phone does that, too, you get used to it."

Never had that on any phone. Is your tone huge or stored on an odd place?

I had this problem on my s3 also, what's happening is your texts are set to a 200 message limit, as you receive a new text over that limit it's deleting a text message in that thread to make room for the new one coming in (you should notice this happens with the most frequently messaged contacts) as it's deleting the notification sound is being interrupted, what you could do is raise your text limit instead of deleting the message thread that is causing the problem (the one over the 200 message limit) by opening your message app / menu /settings/text limit
Hope this helps..
Do the same with multimedia also, just to be safe..

Nope, they're in the Notifications folder. I was using the Codec sound from MGS at first, but now it's the jump sound from Super Mario Bros.

NICE!
Everyone always said I had to delete messages, so I lowered the limit to 100. I'll try raising it and see if that helps.

I have mine on a 1000 limit and haven't had that issue. That being said, when I switch roms I don't save messages and that usually happens before I hit the limit.

Standard SMS app lags and locks up...often

So tell me if anyone else is having this problem. When I hit Back to close a conversation (to go back to the conversation list), the app will hang for quite a long time. Sometimes upwards of 20 or 30 seconds. It's my biggest gripe with the phone as I send plenty of text messages every day.
Anyone else having this problem? Because it's *very* annoying. I installed Handcent, but I couldn't stand it. It wasn't smooth at all (scrolling) and it was ugly (and the skins didn't help much).
Same issue for me. I put handcent on and it works fine for me. Kind of sucks.

Never had that issue myself. I'd download Go SMS and use the dark theme. I love it myself along with Smart Keyboard.

How big are your threads? I don't have any lag issues but my threads tens to get to around 1000ish before i delete them.

Just installed Go SMS and it's by far better than Handcent. Smooth and works.

I don't delete threads or posts to conserve space. When I got this phone (week and change ago) I had just over 10k messages, and it's probably around 10,200 now. That's across 87 conversations, but I'd say many of them are less than 30 messages a piece. Only about 20-25 are big ones. I'd guess 5 of them are well over 1,000 messages.
the 4th thing I did after I rooted was....
DELETE THE MMS.APK (since 2nd thing was to put on CM7.1) from system/data and put on Go SMS as my default.
I don't have any issue. I let my phone delete after 200. I use SMS backup + to back them up to my gmail accont. That way I can get them if I want them later, but they don't take space on my phone.

Canceling SMS

Is there a way to cancel an SMS during sending? I used to be able to go to the outbox and stop the message before it sent (Accidental, bad message, sent to wrong person, etc). However, I can't seem to do that on this phone. Is there any mod or app that can allow me to possibly long press a message while it's sending and cancel the sending? (I get ****ty reception where I'm at, so it usually takes a couple seconds before the message sends).

Why don't you try selecting the message as its sending and when the menu pops up you hit "delete". Usually works for me when sending mms.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda premium
I tried that. Sometimes it works, but sometimes it still goes through. Also, sometimes I don't necessarily want to delete the message, but rather edit it, especially if it's a long message :l
Haven't gone through that yet so don't know but that's the reason I always type the body content and do fill in the recipient last.
Handcent has an option to confirm before sending.
doesnt take long at all to send a sms message. but if you do delete it before it goes through, it will get canceled. But only have a limited time. Cant edit or delete a message thats already sent/recieved.
Quick fix: Dont be so fast to hit the "send" button
Go SMS pro also has the same feature. Let's you confirm before sending a message. I'd recommend moving to that or handcent if you wanna be in more control of your SMS app. Plus the ability to swap themes on the fly is always nice too
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA
Confirming every message would be annoying. Plus, even if I had that functionality on, I'd grow to just confirm without reading. I usually catch errors when it's being sent (my luck ). Also, I tried deleting a message that was being sent the other day, yet the person still got it? Was I just not quick enough or...? Because I saw the little green arrow still indicating that it was trying to send the second I deleted it.
Proof read? That's what I do, not always 100% but it helps. Hopefully you find a solution. Until then, proof read ;-)

I personally can't vouch for that method of deleting-while-sending to be true. I used to do that a lot and sometimes it worked. Others it didn't. And confirming every message can be pretty annoying lol. Other than that though there isn't much else to do other than pay a littleeee bit more attention before you hit that nice shiny send button

Messaging BIG Problem (Ridiculous)

Hi, This is my first post and i need help, I was texting with my new phone (SGS3) in the stock messaging app, and i wrote an SMS (4 Pages) and suddenly the SMS was automatically converted to MMS, and there is no option to disable this horrible and ridiculous feature, and theres also no option to turn it off! So how can this be possible? Such an expenssive phone, and you cant even write freely an SMS??? Why is there a limit of 3 pages? I was wondering if someone could do a MOD to fix this! I had the same problem with the galaxy note, and there was a little mod that could fix that, so i think im not the only one that want this fixed! (i dont like custom ROMS or anything like that, and i dont like apps like GoSMS, or stuff like that, i just like the stock messaging app, but with the fix) i just want PLEASE a little mod to fix this BIG problem. (Sorry for my english)
Sms are limited to 160 characters. Otherwise it has to be sent as an Mms.

Thats not what i asked for, i mean.. im coming from an iphone 4s and that never happened, in fact it never happened to me in all the phones i have had!! So, i dont see the point of converting an SMS automatically to MMS just because i write more than 3 pages, thats just ridiculous But the thing is, that i would like to know if someone could do a MOD for the stock messaging app to fix that and make it without characters restrictions! To explain it better this is what i want for my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371755
no one texts anymore, use whatsapp or some sort of instant messaging

i'm pretty sure that's not how it works, SMS longer than 160 characters get sent as multiple SMS which then then recombined back into one sms on the recipients phone. I've had the issue before when one part of a multi SMS message was delayed causing me to have the first or second half only and when the other one arrived sometime later the phone still knew to combined them together.
MMS is only when you attach a picture, video or voice clip to the message.
I have just tested what the OP has said and its true, if you type a long SMS, after the 3rd set of 260 characters, (there is a counter just above the send icon) it then gets converted to a MMS
But to the OP, I do wonder why you would want to type such a long SMS on a regular basis? you can also just send the sms at 3 pages then send a new one.
Can't you just send after every two pages. Yeah, it cost more but it will solve your issue.

Sms are limited to 160 characters (Per Page), And when you write more than 3 Pages, it will automatically convert your SMS to MMS without asking or option to disable, it will just convert it to MMS. (it will convert it even if you dont attach ANYTHING, Even if it just based on text)
Use Go sms... But this is stupid...
S3 shouldn't do that...
Lol at the Wattsapp suggestions

Wow I just realised that there is no option to cancel this 'feature' after I read your thread.
I do hope this is resolved since for those on Payandgo networks, like me, MMS isn't always free whereas practically even mobile plan has free SMS. Defeats the objective here, you can send very long SMS texts (counts as more than 1 but still sends fine) from other phones no problem. On the galaxy nexus it was possible to disable this SMStoMMS converting problem easily, I hope the devs come up with a workaround..

Who still has data rates for SMS and MMS? I thought this stuff was free now? In Australia SMS for free is pretty much standard and most plans have at least $500 of credit included, an MMS costs max 0.50c, is this seriously an issue? Just use a different messegeing ap or use an instant messenger.

Guys, am I right in saying that this was always a problem with stock messaging app? Hence most custom ROMs have a modded 'No MMS convert' message app? I remember this limitation on my stock SGS2 back in the day - dont remember this ever happening to me after custom roms.... or maybe I never sent over 3 pages.......
I just tried Texting over 311 characters from my SGS2 to my SGS3 and them back..........No MMS converting.... One whole page too....
Therefore this is not a problem with custom ROMs...

Wrong Timestamp on Message list

Has anyone else noticed that on the stock messaging app, the timestamp on messages is wrong? I just realized what it is showing, it is showing the date/time of the last MMS message, not the last message of any type. If I change the view (at the bottom) from "All Messages" to "SMS/MMS", it updates and shows the correct timestamp, but if I go back to "All Messages" (which it defaults to every time i leave and re-enter the app) it shows the wrong timestamp again.
Is this something everyone with the DNA is experiencing or just me? Is there a fix? If not is there some way to make HTC aware of this (or is this an android problem)?
Thanks!
this has plagues sense phones since they originated. there are a few fixes I think but ive grown so used to it I dont pay it any attention anymore
yeah, hit the "SMS/MMS" tab and its the correct time. All Messages it where the problem lies.

Correct, I was aware of that (I mentioned it in my first post), but thank you anyways for your help. I was hoping there was a way to make all messages correct also (or to default the messages app to start up on sms/mms tab).
Not a huge deal, but an annoyance that doesn't make any sense. Is there any way to make sure HTC is aware of this issue? Maybe get it fixed in a future update?

Its not that the text messages have the wrong time embedded in them. It'd that the messaging app is displaying the time of the most recent mms, not message on general, in the thread view.

Incoming calls have +1 on numbers? Acts as intentional number?

Running beans rom and when I get a call it always shows a+1 then the number and the phone thinks it ab international number so I have to remove it to make the call. Any way around this? I'm willing to change roms if someone can confirm a different rom doesn't do this.
Thanks a bunch

I'm on Beans as well. I never noticed it, but it looks like mine is the same way, it has appended a "1" to all my contacts. I rarely make calls, and when I do I almost never use contacts db, but I can see how this would be annoying. My incomming call log does however show the numbers correctly. Honestly I would not even be willing to say it's Beans that has done this. It has been so long since I used the contacts dialer, that my contacts could have been appended and backed up and restored by google who knows when.
Later,
Jason
**Edit** I take it back, I looked through more of them, and it seems random as to whether they have the 1, and if you truly mean +1 as you said in the original post, I dont see that showing up anywhere, in my contacts or call log. GL
I know what you mean mine has done that I just edit and delete the one then save so it annoying but deal -able ya know
