Should I just do a backup, and install CM 10.1 OTA through my phone, then install GApps, and then install things I like (Such as Custom Kernel and JustUnBean Themed Gapps) as I normally do when updating my ROM?
Or should some extra steps/wipes/etc be taken when going from CM 10 to CM 10.1?
Thanks,
YoHoJo
You can do that, but the best way would be to clean install. Backup all your non-Google data like SMS etc, which don't get backed up to Google automatically, then full wipe, flash ROM, gapps and other mods, then setup your phone again.

Thank you Sashank, anyone else care to give their opinions?
Always backup. I don't know how much has changed in the cyanogen versions, but i'd ask what advice they offer. Likely, since it is just a .1 version bump, you do not need a clean install. I'd probably just wipe cache and dalvik, no factory reset.

Hi, noob question as usual.
I have been rooting and installing custom firmware for some time now but hate the fact that after every new firmware update it takes hours to re-install all the apps (they are not always all automatically re-installed by google play) and even using nova launcher it does not always return my device and settings to just how it was in previous version.
I am wanting to know if there is a simple way to have a complete copy of your device that can easily and safely be installed on to the new firmware version, thus eliminating hours of extra work getting back to "just how i like it"
Things like alarms, speed dials, icon positioning, widgets etc.
Apologies if this has been covered but hoping someone can assist

by the way if it makes any difference i am currently using

and would obviously like to upgrade to

Titanium backup.
Play store.

Thanks for replying.
This is what I use but I find that titanium doesn't always restore data that is compatible. It creates a buggy firmware upgrade.
use a non-stock launcher like Nova, then the backup will include the icons.
Go Contacts as dialler or use Google to sync your contacs including favorites.
Titanium may only be used for non-system apps but will work flawlessly then.
Please note that your terminology is off.
Updates are between compatible roms - so no need to wipe and start from scratch.
Upgrades MAY be incompatible, so does switching roms.
Usually you only have to wipe when switching roms or changing to another Android version.

Thanks. I do use Nova actually but if play store doesn't restore all the apps, then nova won't create the icons or widgets.
Are you saying that i can update my firmware from 7.0 to 8.5.0 without deleting anything?
Could you please instruct on steps to update without wiping cache etc.?

Yes but if you get problems then reinstall after a wipe .
Boot CWM Recovery Wipe Cache then Advanced Wipe Dalvik .
Flash zip.
Alternative to keep settings .
Nandroid backup of existing rom .
Install custom rom as above .
Reboot let new rom upgrade itself .
Boot to recovery advanced restore and restore data only .

Sorry, looks like it is now up to 9.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797334
Is it simply a case of reboot into recovery and install the zip for 9.0 over the existing 7.0 firmware? Does this keep all of my other apps info etc as they were? Does wiping cache and dalvik remove anything off my phone? (not quite sure what they do)
Ta again

OK.
just some feedback to let you know that the update from 7.0 to 9.0 was as simple as described and worked flawlessly.
It does recommend that you do a clean install (wipe everything on the internal SD card) however this was not necessary as it worked a treat after updating and the only thing i had to re-install (for some reason) was Chrome.
Very happy and looking forward to future updates
NB: 9.0 runs considerably smoother than 7.0 and is well worth updating to.
For anyone reading this thread.
ARHD is now up to version 11. Flashing this perseus ROM is amazing and smooth.

Actually just read that version 11.1.0 is coming out today with perseus inbuilt in Aroma. Brilliant news. Should try it.

Hi OP
Titanium Backup is the best choice, but in your case, as you have few experience, I also suggest you "MyBackup Root" from Play Store.
I have Jelly'Beans' Build 6 on my Note II currently.... I have been toying with other roms, However, Jelly'Beans' build has been the best for me....... I was curious if I flash Build 11 over Build 6, is that possible, or do I have to do a complete wipe and factory rest or can I just flash 11 over 6???
Like wise, I have had several devices and rooted and rom'd all of them. Is there a way that I don't have to redownload all my apps and resetup all my accounts [exchange, hotmail, facebook, twitter, etc....]?
Sorry I swear I'm not a noob!
I would do a wipe, cause u were using different roms, in his thread it says to wipe, get go backup pro in the market, backup everything, restore and ur good to go.. I'm using 11 I think its awesome

I agree that if you have run other ROMs a full wipe and reset is a good idea. I dirty flashed 11 from 10 but prior to that I had always done clean flashes. If you use Titanium backup you can speed the process up quite a bit. When I flash I restore the handful of login-intensive apps manually, both app and data, so that I don't have to set it all up again. Don't do this with system apps, but for things like Twitter, Facebook, etc it has worked just fine a number of times. Also if you use a 3rd party launcher you should be able to back up your settings there too so the layouts persist. Widgets will be lost but those are easy to rebuild.
It sounds like you've flashed back to a previous nandroid backup that was on JellyBeans B6, correct?
I say it wouldn't hurt to try a dirty flash first. If it doesn't work well after, then do a clean flash to B11.
As for your 2nd question, I use Titanium Backup for all apps & data that I don't like to reset and reinstall. So this would be my very first app download from Play.
Dude, you're 5 versions ago. Absolutely FULL WIPE.
No question.

Hello,
First off, I see there is another thread for a similar problem for a different device but unfortunately I was unable to find a solution to my question there, so I am asking here.
When rooting/installing CM10.1 on my tab about a month ago, I installed the Gapps froom goo.im, and for the most part everything works except for Google Now. I lived with it for a while but today, when rooting/flashing CM 10.1 on my brothers tab, I found that there is a gapps version (wingray) that has Google Now working. So I installed that version on my brothers tab, and google now seems to be working fine. So now I would like to get the wingray Gapps on my galaxy tab.
To do this do I have to wipe my tablet and do the whole flashing process again with the wingray version? Or can I just flash the wingray version over the goo.im version?
I just want to make sure so that I don't do anything stupid with my tablet.
Thank you in advance!
You have to wipe system, cache and dalvik first then reflash your ROM and gapps.

No, you must wipe system first, because if you flash over another gapps, there is left overs from the previous gapps.

Not saying its the best way...but I have done it before and havent had issues. Of course its always better to flash ROM again.

What exactly do you mean by "left over"? Would it affect the new gapps in anyway?

Probably. I mean if you don't wipe, there maybe some small parts left from the old gapps.

There is dirty flashing, which is flashing the wingray gapps over the existing one. It is dirty because they may not contain exactly the same apps, versions or state. This can cause conflicts which may affect the performance of the apps concerned or even functionality of the tab itself. For this reason it is better to do a clean flash which involves wiping cache, partition, formatting etc which will ensure that the system partition is completely cleared and therefore clean. So my advice is do a clean flash by doing all the wipes, format etc first then flash the ROM followed by the gapps and then wipe cache and dalvik again before rebooting.
Cheers!

Will do, thank you everyone here on your input. Will update after I do the procedure.
UPDATE
So I completely wiped the device, after backing up my app data, and reflashed CM 10.1 along with the wingray gapps. Google Search/Now still don't seem to be working unless I don't update the app. I was under the impression that with the wingray gapps it would work all the time, but at least the google search functionality works if I don't update the app, I can live with that.
Is this just an issue with this device? Or is there a way to get google now to work all the time, even when updating the app?
Update update
I tried to do it again, this time with a different version of gapps that someone pointed to me, claiming that it works completely on his tab. I'm still having the same problem, google now crashes when I try to run it, unless I uninstall its updates.
I was recently trying a few different ROMs. Each time, going back to CWM Recovery and factory resetting, wiping the cache, wiping the dalvik cache and then flashing the ROM and gapps before booting which seemed to work okay, however, I noticed the last few ROMs I flashed have all had the google apps preinstalled, without me flashing the google apps package.
I thought this may have been due to me restoring my google account on first boot, however, even without this, the play store, google +, and the official google search app, among others, are still present in a fresh flash. As far as I know, these ROMs (cyanogen mod, pacman, aokp) should definitely not include the google apps pre-installed.
Any ideas as to why they're showing up without me having flashed them?
The ROMs probably have them included, check the ROM's zip and see for yourself.

Thanks for your reply! Could you please explain to me where to look in the ROM's zip to see if they have gapps included?
I've tried the latest stable builds of CM, AOKP and PA and they all seem to be pre-installed with gapps which makes me think there's something else going on since I know that last time I flashed CM I forgot gapps and there was no Play Store or anything.
If those are official builds of cm, aokp etc. Then they for sure do not have gapps preinstalled.
My best guess is your wiping isn't working as it is supposed to and these aren't clean flashes.
Open up gapps.zip and your ROM.zip if you want to check and compare if any gapps are preinstalled but I doubt it (look in the system/app folders)

Bingo! Just as I suspected, the system/app/ folder doesn't have any gapps apk's so I think you're right - these don't seem to be clean flashes. Any idea as to why my factory resets aren't working? I've tried factory resetting multiple times and updating CWM recovery but that doesn't seem to have done anything.
Pull the recovery log after wipes to check, should be advanced settings. Some recoveries are made poorly
Also be sure to wipe everything possible (cache and dalvik separately as well)
You can create a simple wipe/format script also if you wish that will do the wiping for you, this can help ensure cleanliness. If you chack your phones forum someone may have done this already (search superwipe)
If your phone supports fastboot this is one of the cleanest wipes possible and would recommend this too.

I'm running the LG MS840VV3 rooted.
I can't seem to find any good roms for it, they are all based on gingerbread, I'm dying to find an ICS version rom.
Regardless, when I reboot my backed up rom, all my apps are still there and such. Makes it nice for testing. However, is there a way I can keep all my apps from my basic Rom into any new rom I install.
Would not wiping the data before installing the rom work? I
This depends on each ROM but on the most you need to wipe data since it could become not compatible or it could crash the ROM meaning bricking your device.
I recommend that you wipe data but you could back-up all the data before wiping it and restore it on your new rom.
