[Q] [Roms] Merging Roms? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running the LG MS840VV3 rooted.
I can't seem to find any good roms for it, they are all based on gingerbread, I'm dying to find an ICS version rom.
Regardless, when I reboot my backed up rom, all my apps are still there and such. Makes it nice for testing. However, is there a way I can keep all my apps from my basic Rom into any new rom I install.
Would not wiping the data before installing the rom work? I

This depends on each ROM but on the most you need to wipe data since it could become not compatible or it could crash the ROM meaning bricking your device.
I recommend that you wipe data but you could back-up all the data before wiping it and restore it on your new rom.

[Q] HowTo : flash roms ?

sorry in advance if this is the wrong place for this....
i can't find out what i need to by doing forum searches and maybe this could help someone else too..
...and feel free to redirect me to another thread for some specifics.
any way i have my phone rooted and running kaos froyo v24
what do i need to do to best try other roms, or just update to v30?
how do i flash ? - and how do i know when to do a full wipe? - and what does that entail(should i do a backup , and does the back up need to be on my computer, not my phone?)
could flashing other roms make my current one unstable?
and lastly .....will i lose all my apps and contacts and stuff with each flash or full wipe?
any clarification on these matters would be awesome.
and thanks so much everyone..... you have given me a better phone

This would be better placed in Q&A, but I will be happy to help you. All you need to do to flash another rom is what you did for the first one. To move up from one version of a rom to another, you don't need to wipe unless the instructions specify you to do so. But when in doubt, wipe. That is if you dont mind losing all of your saved data. But when going to a new rom, then wiping is a must. Yes, you will lose all apps and contacts for each wipe. No, your phone will not be unstable because of the flash, though if the rom has bugs then it could be. Hope this helps
I suggest installing titanium backup from the market. It allows you to save your current apps and data to be reinstalled on your new rom.
Before flashing a new rom, create a nandroid of your current rom by holding vol up + power. Scroll to backup/restore and create the nand. If for any reason you dont like the new rom, you can wipe data, dalvik, and ext (if your sd card is partitioned) and restore the nand. Your phone will be exactly like before.
To flash a new rom, save the file to the root of your sd card (not in any folder), do a wipe if your going to a new rom or if you have problems updating the old one, and flash the file you downloaded. If your updating the same rom the developer will tell you if you need to wipe or not.
FYI- Nands are saved on your sd card in the nandroid folder. You dont need to mess with them. When you restore, amon ra will look in that folder for you. Don't rename your recoveries like I did and render them useless.

And your contacts should be resynced when you flash a new rom as long as you're using Gmail and allowing it to backup.

[Q] Is wiping user data necessary

I wanted to flash my wt19i with the AOSP ROM. Is wiping the user data necessary before flashing it? What will happen if i dont wipe the user data?
Yes. It is highly recommended, especially if coming from stock ROM.
Else there will be compability problems with certain files that can lead to force closes and/or freezing/restarting.
But u can still flash ROMs without Wiping user data right
Sure, but the risk of having problems with new rom is significantly higher.
Anyone know why always encounter error bad zip then installation aborted while installing exMIUI Using stock rom 4.0.4 rooted? Is it any relation with wiping data? Cache & dalvik ?

Clearing user data / factory reset is always a good idea when changing ROMs. Minimizes issues especially if the ROM you're flashing has an app you already have. Not clearing has been known to cause FCs in such cases and un+reinstalling doesn't help at times.
If you're concerned about apps already installed and don't wanna lose the settings or just simply don't want to reinstall them, backup using TB. Restore after flashing is done.

Based on my experience, yes, there are too many issues that can occur trying to preserve the data. Maybe an expert could do it, but even then, probably not worth the effort.

Not always necessary
It is not always necessary but it is recommended
For example I was coming from ex miui 4 and wanted real ics , so I just installed the zip over miui and it was running fine. Just wifi error but you can fix that easily

Easy / quick way to completely upgrade firmware as it was?

Hi, noob question as usual.
I have been rooting and installing custom firmware for some time now but hate the fact that after every new firmware update it takes hours to re-install all the apps (they are not always all automatically re-installed by google play) and even using nova launcher it does not always return my device and settings to just how it was in previous version.
I am wanting to know if there is a simple way to have a complete copy of your device that can easily and safely be installed on to the new firmware version, thus eliminating hours of extra work getting back to "just how i like it"
Things like alarms, speed dials, icon positioning, widgets etc.
Apologies if this has been covered but hoping someone can assist

by the way if it makes any difference i am currently using
[ROM] Android Revolution HD 7.0 | High Quality & Performance | AROMA | Jelly Bean
and would obviously like to upgrade to
[ROM] Android Revolution HD 8.5.0 | High Quality & Performance | AROMA | Jelly Bean
but would like to do so as hassle free as possible

Titanium backup.
Play store.

Thanks for replying.
This is what I use but I find that titanium doesn't always restore data that is compatible. It creates a buggy firmware upgrade.
use a non-stock launcher like Nova, then the backup will include the icons.
Go Contacts as dialler or use Google to sync your contacs including favorites.
Titanium may only be used for non-system apps but will work flawlessly then.
Please note that your terminology is off.
Updates are between compatible roms - so no need to wipe and start from scratch.
Upgrades MAY be incompatible, so does switching roms.
Usually you only have to wipe when switching roms or changing to another Android version.

Thanks. I do use Nova actually but if play store doesn't restore all the apps, then nova won't create the icons or widgets.
Are you saying that i can update my firmware from 7.0 to 8.5.0 without deleting anything?
Could you please instruct on steps to update without wiping cache etc.?

Yes but if you get problems then reinstall after a wipe .
Boot CWM Recovery Wipe Cache then Advanced Wipe Dalvik .
Flash zip.
Alternative to keep settings .
Nandroid backup of existing rom .
Install custom rom as above .
Reboot let new rom upgrade itself .
Boot to recovery advanced restore and restore data only .

Sorry, looks like it is now up to 9.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1797334
Is it simply a case of reboot into recovery and install the zip for 9.0 over the existing 7.0 firmware? Does this keep all of my other apps info etc as they were? Does wiping cache and dalvik remove anything off my phone? (not quite sure what they do)
Ta again

Cache and Dalvik are rebuilt on boot .

OK.
just some feedback to let you know that the update from 7.0 to 9.0 was as simple as described and worked flawlessly.
It does recommend that you do a clean install (wipe everything on the internal SD card) however this was not necessary as it worked a treat after updating and the only thing i had to re-install (for some reason) was Chrome.
Very happy and looking forward to future updates
NB: 9.0 runs considerably smoother than 7.0 and is well worth updating to.
For anyone reading this thread.
ARHD is now up to version 11. Flashing this perseus ROM is amazing and smooth.

Actually just read that version 11.1.0 is coming out today with perseus inbuilt in Aroma. Brilliant news. Should try it.

Hi OP
Titanium Backup is the best choice, but in your case, as you have few experience, I also suggest you "MyBackup Root" from Play Store.

Best way to upgrade SGS3 from CM 10 to CM 10.1

Should I just do a backup, and install CM 10.1 OTA through my phone, then install GApps, and then install things I like (Such as Custom Kernel and JustUnBean Themed Gapps) as I normally do when updating my ROM?
Or should some extra steps/wipes/etc be taken when going from CM 10 to CM 10.1?
Thanks,
YoHoJo
You can do that, but the best way would be to clean install. Backup all your non-Google data like SMS etc, which don't get backed up to Google automatically, then full wipe, flash ROM, gapps and other mods, then setup your phone again.

Thank you Sashank, anyone else care to give their opinions?
Always backup. I don't know how much has changed in the cyanogen versions, but i'd ask what advice they offer. Likely, since it is just a .1 version bump, you do not need a clean install. I'd probably just wipe cache and dalvik, no factory reset.

[Q] Jelly'Beans' upgrade from prior build

I have Jelly'Beans' Build 6 on my Note II currently.... I have been toying with other roms, However, Jelly'Beans' build has been the best for me....... I was curious if I flash Build 11 over Build 6, is that possible, or do I have to do a complete wipe and factory rest or can I just flash 11 over 6???
Like wise, I have had several devices and rooted and rom'd all of them. Is there a way that I don't have to redownload all my apps and resetup all my accounts [exchange, hotmail, facebook, twitter, etc....]?
Sorry I swear I'm not a noob!
I would do a wipe, cause u were using different roms, in his thread it says to wipe, get go backup pro in the market, backup everything, restore and ur good to go.. I'm using 11 I think its awesome

I agree that if you have run other ROMs a full wipe and reset is a good idea. I dirty flashed 11 from 10 but prior to that I had always done clean flashes. If you use Titanium backup you can speed the process up quite a bit. When I flash I restore the handful of login-intensive apps manually, both app and data, so that I don't have to set it all up again. Don't do this with system apps, but for things like Twitter, Facebook, etc it has worked just fine a number of times. Also if you use a 3rd party launcher you should be able to back up your settings there too so the layouts persist. Widgets will be lost but those are easy to rebuild.
It sounds like you've flashed back to a previous nandroid backup that was on JellyBeans B6, correct?
I say it wouldn't hurt to try a dirty flash first. If it doesn't work well after, then do a clean flash to B11.
As for your 2nd question, I use Titanium Backup for all apps & data that I don't like to reset and reinstall. So this would be my very first app download from Play.
Dude, you're 5 versions ago. Absolutely FULL WIPE.
No question.
