Phone gets very hot, even when it's turned off - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,My brother gave me an old Galaxy SII that he had stored somewhere, but when I insert the battery, (even if it's turned off) it gets hot on its bottom right side. (seeing it from the back, see the attached picture below) and when I plug it to a charger it gets super hot (I can't stand to put my finger on it )from that same side, and some seconds later the "Charging paused, battery temp too high or too low" sign will appear. The same happens when charging it while it's turned off.
Any suggestions? I put my dad's battery on it(a SGII too), and the same, and put my battery on his phone and it charged fine, so I don't think that the battery is the problem. My guess is that the charging port is faulty, I tried to clean it with isopropyl alcohol and a toothpick, but no luck.
Do you think that if I change the usb part will fix the problem?
Any suggestions?
By the way, I'm on stock samsung GB rom, and I already tried a Hard Reset.
Greetings.

Yeah you might as well try replacing the port/flex cable, but the getting super hot thing is a worry. Could be the charging circuitry. Get a port/flex cable from eBay/wherever & see how it goes.

That's a short man, take it to service center and they'll check it out.

Yeah, I Think that it's a short, because even if the phone it's unplugged and powered off, when the battery is inserted it gets hot.
I found this, http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f258/samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-short-circuit-solution-1537757/ I'm going to open it and see wich component get's hot,

Bricked?

Hey guys, was using my SII a few hours ago, and I put it down at ~48% battery life. I had it charging off the USB of my PC. I don't have Samsung Kies installed, or anything. I was purely just charging it, on stock rom/bootloaders/no-root.
I went to pick up my phone a few minutes after, and all the sudden the phone won't turn on anymore.
I've tried pulling the battery, I've tried letting it run through any power still in the circuits, by having the battery out for 30+ minutes. I tried the "pull out battery, hold power for 10 seconds, then pop battery back in," to no avail. I've tried download mode, I've tried using my old Captivate jig.. It doesn't seem to be responding if I plug it in(no heat.)
Any ideas? Going to bring it back to the AT&T store tomorrow to try and get a new one.. I really hope they don't give me any ****. -_-;
Update:
I went to the AT&T store today since they just got a new batch in. Unfortunately, my faulty phone actually wasn't a problem with the phone.. It was a problem with the battery.
Somehow, the battery shorted out the entire phone, and killed it. The reason why I suspect this, is that I asked for the old battery in the new phone they were giving me. Sure enough. That phone is now a brick, also..
Thankfully, they were nice enough to give me a different one and not shove the newly dead one down my throat..
So.. Not quite sure how that happens, but sure enough.. That battery is a Galaxy killer.

You got a dud piece of hardware. Shouldn't have any problem exchanging it.

The only thing you didn't mention is using the stock charger to charge the battery for an hour or so. Did you try that? It could be a dead battery. And once the battery is critically low, your PC can't supply enough juice to charge the battery.

Yes, the USB charging mode on the computer sucks. Its easy to draw a deficit of power running off the computer. I had 8 percent and plugged in via USB and within a minute. Or two it was almost dead, fell to 1% in literally 5 mins. It was almost like it was pulling power FROM. The phone
The stock wall charger is 700ma IIRC. Most PCs can output only 500ma max (USB 1.0/2.0 standard). The 700ma is needed when battery level is really low. So, don't leave home without the wall charger.
I tried plugging the phone into the wall charger, to no avail.
Won't even show the charging screen, or get warm.
Bah! Hopefully the AT&T store will have new ones in stock tomorrow.
Bump.

That's surprising - did they confirm that the phones remained dead even with a "good" battery in?
The charger chip in our phones (MAX8922) has plenty of short-circuit protection mechanisms. (Battery prequalification mode limits current to 90 mA at extremely low batt voltage, and it also has temperature limiting.) So a shorted battery shouldn't have been able to damage the phone.

Indeed, we tried swapping the "new" battery into it. Both of the phones were gone. I never even thought it was probable. Maybe it was just a bad batch? Who knows.
Either way! New phone smell, is great. =P

[SOLVED] SGS2 doesn't charge.

Appearantly my SGS2 doesn't charge, when I connect it to the wall charger it boots up, shows that the battery is at 0% and shuts down after about a minute. Than it repeats it the process over and over again.
Any ideas?
* Solution: MicroUSB pins were dirty, cleaned and the phone charges.

Nothing, completely stock.
I am having the same issue. Wont charge, battery icon shows up for about 5 secs than flickers off - then repeats that every minute or so. It also gets really hot. Have tried different chargers, cleaning the contacts etc but nothing works.
It wont enter recovery or download mode either
If you are running pure stock ROM+Kernel then it sounds like a mechanical fault. Try and order a new battery in the first instance and see if that solves it. Otherwise take it back and get it replaced by the manufacturer.
It is common for this to occur when the battery has been drained past its safety net.
Leave it doing that charge loop on and off. It will stop after some time.
This a warning that you need to stop letting your battery go to 0%
Don't be lazy, charge your phone when it needs to be charged.

Just clean your micro USB port on the phone. When it's dirty it makes pins short circuits... You can use an ear swab + alcohol.
I'll need to try cleaning that microSD slot, I bought new battery, phone powers up but now it doesn't charge at all.
I plug it in, nothing happens. Any ideas?

Im not sure how I can clean the microSD slot with simply an ear swap since its such a small thing, but I cleaned it as good as I could, not I shows black screen with yellow triangle and exclamation mark.
I tried the new battery, the phone powers up, shows its charging but still stays at 0% and reboots continuesly..
* EDIT! The triangle vanished and the phone is now charging! Special thanks to radkor! It was just a dirty microUSB slot.
If you can't charge the battery using the usb slot then you could buy a standalone battery charger off ebay... This won't help if there is more problems than just the charging though.... But its fairly cheap and you now have an extra oem battery for a spare...
The phone charges now properly but both the battery go empty in less than 10hrs even though I've got Juice Defender and BatterSave mode on, also it reboots continuesly when I make a call, I think I might have another problem on my hand..

[Q] SGS2 strange bug

Hey all,
After being fine for almost 12 months, my phone has suddenly developed a bug. Nothing has changed over the last 24hrs, so I am not sure where it has come from.
It started with a notification saying 'activating USB will turn bluetooth off. Continue?'
There was nothing plugged in to the USB at the time, so I'm not sure why it came up.
I clicked 'NO' but it kept happening constantly until I reset the phone. Then when I turned the phone back on, the battery overheat sign came up. It clearly wasn't running hot, but it only went away after I removed the battery.
Then this morning after I unplugged my phone from the charger it said it was still on charge and the 'battery full' notification wouldn't go away. So I reset my phone, and again the overheat sign comes on. Take battery out.....etc.
Now it is telling me that it is on charge (it isn't) and that USB device notification.
Phone is running 2.3.6. Any ideas?
Possible USB port malfunction. Maybe try cleaning it.
Sent from my GT-I9100T
Second that.Clean the port with a cotton bud and cleaning alcohol.
Is Metho ok to use?
I might look up how to take the phone apart and give the insides a proper clean, rather than just poking around the port.
I'll await an answer about the metho before I give it a crack.
Thanks for the replies.
You dont have to take the phone apart
Quite a few people have had problems with dirt in the USB port its caused problems similar to and exactly like yours. All they have done is gone to the chemist,or pharmasy or however its spelt and for a few bucks you can buy cleaning alcohol. It must be this kind because of its high alcohol level it drys quickly and doesnt leave moisture inside when done.A few gentle wipes and thats all it needs.Dont take the phone apart cos the port is closed and it will be of no use.Meth is heavy and will leave alot behind drowning the port again.

Dropped phone into water, weird battery issue

Hi,
So as the title say, my battery act very weird.
At first, it refused to charge through the charger. Took out battery and waited 10 min, then it charge, until 100%, unplug charger, and it still charging , never stop.
Took out battery again, waited 10 min, put it in, battery charging icon appear on screen with the little yellow triangle inside, cannot turn on phone. Then I plug charger in, now I can turn on the phone, but battery level now show 80% and notification : charging paused, voltage too high.
Could someone help me?
Thanks
P/s: It was happened last night, leave it over night and I can use the phone normally this morning though.

Oh. Good. Lord.
10 min is NOT ENOUGH TIME to let the thing dry after you dropped the whole thing into water. You probably screwed the pooch on this one.
If the phone is dropped in water, most people recommend taking the phone apart and putting all pieces into a bag full of uncooked rice and silica packages for at least a few (preferably up to 5) DAYS before attempting to reconnect battery.
Because you've reattached battery already after less than 1 hour TWICE, I'm betting you have shorted your mainboard beyond all repair.
Water + electronics isn't necessarily the kill factor. Water + electronics + electrical current (connected battery) BEFORE DRY = dead electronics.
You should leave the battery out of the SGS and put both in a bag with much rice or cat litter some days in a bag. No hair dryer or something like this.
It wasn't a good idea to connect the loader and to leave the battery in the mobile.
I have a friend with exactly the same problem, his daughter put the GS2 phone into water and then he put the battery out for ONE night only... now the phone says is charging when it's unplugged and sometimes the "car mode" activates by his own (i don't even know how to activate the car mode on my GS2) ....
we started to think that the problem will stay forever

You got lucky if yours isn't showing any ill effects after such a short dry time. Yours is an exception.

Well, i did have the same selfactivates problem like you for few min,It even turn it on after i put the battery in, without any action. But it gone now. The problem is that it keep saying charging and the notification keep pop up. I can overcome it by install AOKP or CM9 Rom which dont have that kind of notification. But still, my concern is how long can it take till it really dead?...

Start looking for a new phone now.
If you already shorted it, it's not going to go away. Electronics don't just heal themselves over time.
A repair shop may be able to replace parts with shorted components, but if many have shorts, it may not be worth it to fix, and may end up being more expensive to fix than to replace.
You should have left the phone to dry atleast for a solid 24 hours in a rice bag!
I put my old Sony Ericsson in the washing machine once (was in a pair of shorts) lol.
Of course I don't expect it to work... but I opened it up and took out battery etc... left it out to dry in the sun for few minutes (making sure it doesn't get too hot), then put in a nice dry place with dehumidifier. After a couple of days it worked again.
Now that is just lucky and it probably wouldn't last for long... but luckily I was going to buy a new phone at the time anyways.
Moral of the story... phones, or any electronics, are not waterproof unless stated that they are. You have to be more careful people... or get something like Invisible Shield.
do you think that the problem will go away if I got a new battery ??

How can you be confused about this? The issue is a short on one of the electronic components in the phone. Probably the mainboard. Getting a new battery won't address that.
Why not bring it in to some service center (or even some night market telephone tech guys) and have them check it out? Then they can tell you what needs replacing or if you're better off getting a new phone.

My Galaxy wont charge via PC or Charger

My battery started to drain fast few days ago, i thought it was a software issue(some apps). Yesterday i put it on the charger, as i didnt put it, nothing happend, i thought my charger broke, i put it on PC, same, wont charge, now im thinking the connector broke, u put USB OTG memory stick and it reads it normally, so the port is working, tryed factory reset and reflashing offical stock rom, problem isnt solved, also when the phone is in download mode on charger or pc, and i take out the battery the phone stays on, it takes power directly from the charger(this is normal), witch i think confirms its a battery problem, not a phone. Now, anyone faced this problem also? Have expirience whit this, any advice what should i do (im gona try with new battery but its a weekend, no stores working). Any help, any chance its really a battery problem, not a phone?
EDIT: Also when the battery is in, phone off, put it on charger, the empty battery shows, the grey curcle arrow rolls (battery stats are read), then it shows the battery level for a second, and the circles bellow it instead of zooming in and out in movement, it stays at the first for a seccond and then the display turns off, nothing, no red light also.

I hope you are right, i had that problem before, and replaced it, after then im extremely careful and gentle, so i think there are very low chances that thats the problem, i will take it to service later today, its still under warranty
Its probably a faulty battery
I had a faulty cable and man it was horrible
I was on vacations so no shops around, the phone would constantly show charger connected/disconnected and would take ages to charge
