[Q] SGS2 strange bug - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all,
After being fine for almost 12 months, my phone has suddenly developed a bug. Nothing has changed over the last 24hrs, so I am not sure where it has come from.
It started with a notification saying 'activating USB will turn bluetooth off. Continue?'
There was nothing plugged in to the USB at the time, so I'm not sure why it came up.
I clicked 'NO' but it kept happening constantly until I reset the phone. Then when I turned the phone back on, the battery overheat sign came up. It clearly wasn't running hot, but it only went away after I removed the battery.
Then this morning after I unplugged my phone from the charger it said it was still on charge and the 'battery full' notification wouldn't go away. So I reset my phone, and again the overheat sign comes on. Take battery out.....etc.
Now it is telling me that it is on charge (it isn't) and that USB device notification.
Phone is running 2.3.6. Any ideas?

Possible USB port malfunction. Maybe try cleaning it.

Second that.Clean the port with a cotton bud and cleaning alcohol.

Is Metho ok to use?
I might look up how to take the phone apart and give the insides a proper clean, rather than just poking around the port.
I'll await an answer about the metho before I give it a crack.
Thanks for the replies.

You dont have to take the phone apart
Quite a few people have had problems with dirt in the USB port its caused problems similar to and exactly like yours. All they have done is gone to the chemist,or pharmasy or however its spelt and for a few bucks you can buy cleaning alcohol. It must be this kind because of its high alcohol level it drys quickly and doesnt leave moisture inside when done.A few gentle wipes and thats all it needs.Dont take the phone apart cos the port is closed and it will be of no use.Meth is heavy and will leave alot behind drowning the port again.

[Q] Help! Strange charging behaviour.

Has anyone had this problem?
After three trouble free months, my phone has developed a a very strange problem.
After charging, it behaves as if I'm constantly connecting and disconnecting the phone to a PC. It bleeps whilst showing the battery being connected to a charger and then imidiatly acts like its been disconnected by bleeping and running media scanner on both SD cards. It also shows that its connected via Kies, even though all this is happening whilst only being connected to a charger!
I've already done a full reset, which helped for a few days before it came back. It normally sorts itself out after a few minutes but the period before it "calms down" is getting longer. This morning I removed the battery for an hour but it continued in its "loop". Another, possibly related symptom is that as soon as the battery is installed, the phone boots up without being switched on. The same thing happens if I shut the phone down, it just powers up again!
Any thoughts?
had you if ever dip the bottom part of your phone? sounds like short-circuit issue or I maybe wrong.. try bringing in on to the nearest service center for warranty
Sounds a plausible theory but as far as I can tell, it hasn't got wet. Its been doing it for a few day now, so I think if it was damp, it would have dried out by now.
Thanks anyway.
I got the same problem. Let me know if you figure it out.

my friend had a simmilar issue and it was damage to the usb port , it kept thinking it was connecting to the pc or charger , it also wouldnt charge when plugged into a wall point and went into usb mode and vice versa when he put it into a pc
he sent it back for repair and they sent him a new phone
it may not be what you have but it does sound simmilar
i would try a few things like a reset , format the mass memory , install firmware again , dont restore back ups but set phone up fresh like you would do if you just bought it , then see how it goes , it could just be a corrupted file or system error that could be fixed bya full wipe and fresh install or it could be like my friends and the usb could be on the way out
on the topic of usb ports i do think they could have been better designed and iam hoping mine doesnt break as its needed for hdmi out , charging , docks , etc etc
Thanks Buxz,
As a follow up, I put the battery back in after taking it our for about 3hrs and all seams fine. I know that it isn't a permanent fix but I think it points more to software than hardware, which in a way is more annoying as its all about trial and error, as you described. A mechanical fault is more straight forward.
I just dread having to charge it again!
Regards, Woolly.
UPDATE
Charged it overnight and no problems when disconnecting it this morning. So far!
If anything, the battery life it better than before the problems. The fact that removing the battery for 3hrs broke the cycle of connect/disconnect, makes me think its soft/firmware related.

[Q] Phone Charging While Unplugged (vbus_present)

Hey guys!
I have a weird issue with my phone, and after doing a bit of research I got a bit pessimistic, so here it is:
When I unplug my phone from the charger, the phone stays in "charging" state, which means the charging icon is there, the battery stats are not shown correctly, I can't plug it into my PC via USB, etc. It also doesn't enter deep sleep, since there is a vbus_present wakelock held, which is normal for charging.
I've read that water damage can be one of the causes, and if I think of it, I did have my phone with me, while I took a long bath. While the phone didn't touch any water, the air humidity was really high , so I could blame this for the issue.
Do you have any suggestions / ideas?
Thanks!
Hello?
My phone is dying here!
Sounds like water damage to me... however sometimes, to my knowledge, the issue can be solved like the fuel_alerted wakelocks: pull battery for a while and reinsert. But I assume you already tried that, so water damage would be my best guess although air humidity shouldn't cause that...
It is the same for me when I dropped my phone into water. However, it is now normal again ( lucky me). For your case, I think it water damaged, I would suggest you dry your phone. Take out the battery, dont use phone for some hour(4-5hrs in my case), dry the phone by whatever you can( I just put in under the sun for 15mins, and put it in a bag of rice). It was 2 days since I got the problem, but now its ok. Just try it.
Hope it helps
P/s: still get some minor problem but I can bear with it though
Fixed ?
Hi,
It seams a bit too laste to answer, but it might help someone esle.
I had quite the same issue, and it seams that the solution is to clean the phone USB slot with a toothbrush...
cant post the reference url cause i'm new... so search for "galaxy s2 won't turned off"...
VBUS present wakelock caused by using Apple compatible charger
It does not look like this was ever resolved, so figured I would chime in since I have been looking at this for a while.
If you use a charger which is compatible with Apple products, it will cause the vbus_present wakelock since Apple does not adhere to USB standards and requires two of the pins to be bridged or open (can't remember which) to work for their products. However, when you charge a device that does adhere to USB standards with one of these chargers, it will cause the wakelock (on all the samsung phones I have seen, anyway).
Another downside to using an apple compatible charger is that you can never get more than 500ma out of it due to the non-standard USB connection, even if the charger is capable of 2000ma output. So you get slower charging.
When you are connected to any charger, this wakelock will be present. If you use an Apple compatible charger, it will persist after you unplug it and will drain your battery around 10% per hour since it prevents it from going into deep sleep. You can clear the wakelock by rebooting the phone or plugging it into a standard USB charger, such as a PC or Samsung charger, even for a few seconds.
You can use Better Battery Stats to see the effects of this wakelock. Note that it can take a few minutes to show up once you have unplugged from the apple charger.
Yes, this really p*sses me off. This is one of the reasons I no longer have any Apple products in my house and long since thrown away all the Apple compatible wall chargers I once had. It still comes back to bite me since I still have a couple of chargers that contain batteries to charge when you are away from a wall outlet and they both cause this. When I use them I just have to make sure I reboot afterward. The USB outlet I have installed behind the stereo in my car also causes this wakelock. I have one to replace it but have not gotten around to removing the stereo to do this yet.
The next best solution to never using an apple compatible charger at this point would be to have a kernel that addresses this and removes the wakelock after it is unplugged but I don't see this happening.
Man, I know you love your S II, but don't go taking a bath with it!
Was this recent? why don't you give the little guy a rest and leave it a day in rice, stucked inside a zip lock bag, can't hurt.
Googled this "vbus_present android battery not plugged in"
found this thread. Seems to have worked for me by simply rebooting. thx!

[Q] S2 thinks it is charging all the time

I had a minor incident the other night, whereby the (USB) end of my power charger got water on it. I dried it off instantly as best as I could. The phone itself has not come into contact with any water.
It still charged the phone fine... however after removing the charger at 100% the phone continued to say charging. I turned it off and removed the battery for some time. Upon putting the battery back in, the display showed the charging animation again even though it wasn't plugged in. At this point it wouldn't even turn on.
After multiple attempts I managed to get it switched on. But even now, 2 days later after a couple more charges, it still says it is charging when it isn't. The battery % is also depleting a lot quicker than normal.
I tried a factory reset, wiping and installing a new version of the AOKP ROM I use which fixed the issue temporarily... but as soon as I try charging it again, the charging animation won't go away. This happens even with a different charger all together or a USB cable.
Any ideas on fixing this, or is it time to claim on my insurance? Thanks!
may b the enternal is still not dried , actually wen wet its best to dry it in rice bag for a day or atleast 16,20 hrs then clean an use a sylte warm or cold blow so the moist drys out...so first open the back cover, battery ,sim,sd card an let the phone dry properly..cheeeerz
Thanks but as I say, the phone itself never got wet. Literally a minor amount got on the charger... not sure it is worth drying out a phone that never got wet?
but the end of the usb port is wet right so dont do the charging thing jus use a blow dryer let the thing dry out ,i had dropd my phone in luke warm water of bucket ,i removed it an took out battry, cover and kept in rice bag water was all inside cause wen i checked by shaking it ,i could see water coming then i used a blow dryer an dried it but i had kept it rice for hmmm i think only 2,3 hrs ...but i dint on it for 6hrs like tht....then the next day i powered it an all was fine ..accept the speaker at the back but i used a app tht was supposed to clean speaker, well i don kno weater it got well on its own or the app....well thts my story...m8
be careful with the hairdryer though i know people who have melted plastic drying with a hairdryer xD
did you actually found a way to fix it? i have this problem. and i havent been able to fix it.
Also my PC wont recognize the phone.
Try to clean the usbport. If it doesnt work it needs to be replaced. Its fairly easy and cheap.
Theres guides on youtube.
Well i didnt follow a guide on youtube i just opened it used a toothbrush and alcohol and after with a bottle of suter and it kinda worked, the computer recognizes it but the charging thing is still on.
Im gonna check out the youtube videos.
Thanks!

Phone gets very hot, even when it's turned off

Hello,My brother gave me an old Galaxy SII that he had stored somewhere, but when I insert the battery, (even if it's turned off) it gets hot on its bottom right side. (seeing it from the back, see the attached picture below) and when I plug it to a charger it gets super hot (I can't stand to put my finger on it )from that same side, and some seconds later the "Charging paused, battery temp too high or too low" sign will appear. The same happens when charging it while it's turned off.
Any suggestions? I put my dad's battery on it(a SGII too), and the same, and put my battery on his phone and it charged fine, so I don't think that the battery is the problem. My guess is that the charging port is faulty, I tried to clean it with isopropyl alcohol and a toothpick, but no luck.
Do you think that if I change the usb part will fix the problem?
Any suggestions?
By the way, I'm on stock samsung GB rom, and I already tried a Hard Reset.
Greetings.
Yeah you might as well try replacing the port/flex cable, but the getting super hot thing is a worry. Could be the charging circuitry. Get a port/flex cable from eBay/wherever & see how it goes.
That's a short man, take it to service center and they'll check it out.
Yeah, I Think that it's a short, because even if the phone it's unplugged and powered off, when the battery is inserted it gets hot.
I found this, http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f258/samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-short-circuit-solution-1537757/ I'm going to open it and see wich component get's hot,

[Q] Urgent help 9\(phn maybe corrupted)

the issue started when the phn was exposed to a little rain.. started having the issue of over voltage.. i knew that the usb port had become faulty so reading the forums i tried cleaning it with aftershave as i did not have alcohol .. after that turning on my phn it went crazy into car mode and battery was 1 percent. after that it rebooted into download mode . now i have it on charge but it only boots in download mode .. any suggetion ?
Aftershave contains oils which *may* be conductive. You need to thoroughly clean the phone which will probably involve taking it apart.
But before you do any of that.......REMOVE THE BATTERY.....while the phone is powered up with who knows what shorting.....the chances are high that other damage is occurring.......
my wife says I'm a phone geek....
I'd have to agree......

thnx for ur quick reply buddy. well i did take it apart but not all, did remove the battery and did clean it thoroughly after i kept it on charge for about 5 mins and reseted it its now turned on and charging i hope for the best now hope its not a major motherboard short circuit type issue
now after 4 percent of charging it suddenly said battery disconnected and battery health unspecified battery icon started flashing now this is getting weired
Replace the USB board for starters. If that doesn't fix it & you've had the phone for ages, you're probably better off getting another phone rather than replacing motherboards/etc.
well heres an update took the battery out and let the port dry a little and also used a tissue and then plugged the charger and it worked fine till it charged fully and theres no more over voltage issue will update if it continues. Thnx for all ur help guys u know it human nature to get desperate for something they love so much suddenly die
