[Q] Can you recommend an ICS Custom ROM? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
My first post so please be nice!
About a week ago my GS3 I9300 started to regularly freeze and required me to hold down the power button to reset. This happened fairly randomly but on average 6/7 times per day. I did a factory reset and installed no apps and it seemed fine for 24 hours so i started to install some apps and then it started freezing again.
I'd been thinking about rooting my phone so i thought this was a good reason to try.
I successfully rooted my phone using the toolkit and odin and have since successfully used goo manager and twrp to install a liquidsmooth 4.2.1 ROM.
It looked great and seemed to be ok but then started to freeze up again.
My next idea is to try a custom ICS ROM, does anyone have any suggestions for which one i should try?
Thanks

If its freezing you need a full wipe or return to service .
Best rom is for you to decide but ICS is no longer developed .
We have rules faqs and guides all posted read them first please .

Have you checked/asked in the threads relating to the specific rom(s) you're (which you haven't mentioned. That's OK tho, we can read minds) if anyone has had issues like you're having/if this a specific bug/issue with that rom ?
Just a thought...
Yup asked in the OMEGA ROM where the first time this appeared dev said he don't know what's wrong after that other ROMs from Android development same bug. I always clean installs new ROM so tried that also

Few questions about CM9.

Hello.
I have just got this phone few days ago.
I am intrested in installing CM9, but i have few questions. If i have understood correctly, I need to install leaked ics before installing cm9 (or any other ics rom). Can this be done with mobile odin, and if can, am I able to keep the root with it? (It has function to keep root)
Also, does cm9 support usb otg? There was no result when i tried to search.
Sorry if these are stupid questions.

if you are already rooted which i gather you are just flash the latest nightly. then flash the last google apps and that is it job done. you can flash all those from recovery.
Make sure you back up your current rom and apps and then go ahead and do full wipe. Data - cache - and dalvik and also format system in mount and storage. Flash the above two i mentioned and that should be it.
Regarding the usb - otg not sure but you can ask in the discussion thread
EDIT: i went from checkrom v6 straight to cm9 if that helps.
No. You don't need to install leaked ICS first. I tried CM9 over the weekend & flashed CM7 first. Follow the instructions on the first page of the CM9 discussion thread & you'll be fine.
If you use the files linked to in the first post in the CM9 thread, they're CWM flashable, so you'll need to have a kernel installed that has CWM in order to flash them. CFRoot kernel will do just fine if your phone isn't already rooted with a kernel that has CWM. There might be Odin flashable files around somewhere, you might have to search for them.
It is rooted, yes. Does it support USB OTG ? Good question. That's one thing I do use a bit on GB & forgot to test when I used CM9. Given USB file transfer doesn't work yet, I doubt it. But ask in the CM9 discussion thread or read the FAQS/Wiki.
So in summary, given you haven't done anything to your phone yet:-
1) Root it with a CFRoot kernel
2) Go to the CM9 discussion thread & follow the install instructions in the first post.

True but once you get the hang of things and how things work with the s2 it is a piece of cake..But i must admit sometimes i get scared on what to do specially if i have to unroot and root again as i have only done it a few times...Once i stayed rooted that is it...i do all my upgrading by flashing custom roms. anyway good luck with cm9 you will not regret using it..let me know how you get on
Haha ;-) You Sir are a noble man
OP - Yep, S is right. CM9 is a very nice piece of work given they've only had leaks & their own considerable hacking talents to work with. It's not quite a 'daily driver' for me at this point, but once sources come out I'll be switching back to it post haste. I'd be surprised if the CM team don't have a stable ICS release long before other devs.

Omega V13 noob question...sorry

I have been looking at the Omega V13 ROM and really fancy trying it out.
Do I simply place the download ZIP file onto my sd card and install from Recovery?
I had originally un-zipped the file and placed the folders in my phone, but Recovery didn't find any update files...
Am I being an idiot?
Thanks in advance.

Just a quick tip, you do need to be rooted and already flashed a custom kernel to get CWM to flash that zip in recovery. I suggest you do A LOT more reading before doing ANYTHING..... Sorry if you know all this already, from your post I would say make sure you read all you can and understand what you're before doing it.... GL

If I were you I would NOT do ANYTHING till you understand what you're doing.... There is so much to learn and it takes time to learn... If you do something wrong you can brick (make your phone not usable) it's not worth the risk till you have read LOTS to understand what you're doing..... Here is a link to get you started http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1384134
Just remember it's not cool to have a phone that doesn't work.... Once you get it all figured out flash your first custom kernel in Mobile Odin so you don't trip the flash counter... The free XDA v is in that link......http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899
GL PLEASE READ LOTS BEFORE DOING ANYTHING

Thanks for the reply mate, but despite my noob question regarding this particular ROM, I have flashed/modded my phone a number of times. I have tried the Resurrection ROM, plus a couple of others in the past. The confusion in me arose because every other ROM I'd tried used Odin, whereas this is my first through Recovery.
Thanks again.

And with that, GL enjoy your new ROM!!!
That's fair enough dude
Generally instructions on how to install are on the first page of the thread. In general you have to do:
Full Wipe/Factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced -> Wipe dalvik cache
Install zip from SD (or internal memory)
WARNING: You will lost all your phone numbers, wifi passwords, SMS, game levels and data you dont back up. I recommend using Titanium backup for those matters & SMS backup app. Anyway just in case do a backup of anything important you wish to keep.
Well, I've tested a few ROM's this evening and have stuck with Resurrection Remix (4.0.4).
Have to say that I love it thus far!
Thanks for your responses guys.

[Q] SGH i777 firmware update issue

Good day,
i'm new to xda so excuse me. I recently was updating my sgh i777 on kies to firmware 4.0.4 but it failed and went to emergency firmware recovery mode. Now there is a message on the phone " Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies & try again". Tried this still failed. Also did a stock at&t rom through odin but fails right before it finishes.
Can anyone help me please! Thanks alot..
I'm assuming you read a lot before posting and saw all the terrible things people are saying about this update causing freezes and sleeps of death?

You can flash a stock rooted system package of 2.3.6 or 4.0.3, either one would be better than the 4.0.4 which is known to cause lock ups and sleeps of death.
There is stock ics romantic. Which you can flash with odin.. Please read the developer posts and thread before flash anything. Stock ics has a phone bricking bug and you have to flash a custom kernel to get rid of it...
Pm me if you need any help with it.

To the OP, not sure if you could do an OTA from GB to 4.0.4. You definitely need KIES to update.
If your phone is not updated yet to ICS, you could follow the stickies to root and then install a custom rom, if thats what you are looking for.
Most Stable ROM
Installed 4.0.4 using KIES, then rooted the device. Having a few issues with my calendar sync/updates with Exchange server. Bluetooth also doesn't work anymore. What is the most stable ROM for the I777? I need my Bluetooth back. I'll keep poking around the forums to see what I can find.
Regards,
-Brian

[Q] [Help] S4 Bricked in a Unique Way

Hey guys,
Before anyone rushes into flaming, I just want to note that I've been a member here long enough to know how to search the threads before asking a question that has already been answered. This is the reason for the title. Anywho, here is my situation. I got my hands on a brand new S4, used it stock for a bit, then decided to root it (couldn't help myself.)
Post rooting, everything went great. The ROM (JellyBeans) was running smooth, life was peachy, until I decided to let my flashing addiction get the best of me and I decided to try a new ROM (no offense beanstown, just trying something new.) Anyways, I went into recovery, flashed the new ROM, of course wiping the device 4 times, as has become my habit. Went to turn it on, and the "Custom" screen pops up, then the phone just turns off.
I tried using Odin to return it to stock, but unless I'm using the wrong file, I'm getting the same result. Odin seemingly runs fine, but still no booting. Any ideas? The file I'm using with Odin is VRUAMDK_NoWipe. If there is a different one I should be using, please be kind enough to include a link for me. Thank you.
Just flash the full odin back to stock the version that is still rootable. That should do the trick some times not wiping is the issue.

I mentioned in my original post that I had attempted to use Odin to restore it back to stock. At this point, it doesn't really matter to me whether I can root or not, I'd just like it to turn back on. Shoot, I'd be happy with a boot loop right about now.

reflash your verizon kernel, it will boot, you really didn't need to do odin, guess that is every ones quick fix. and if you are doing odin, after it flashes get into recovery and do a factory reset.
