You don't need to root your phone to upgrade it to 4.1.2
Just download a 4.1.2 ROM from sammobile.com and flash through ODIN and you're good to go.

my s3 is presently running ics 4.0.4. it is carrier free. i'm trying to flash XXELLA through odin. so it checks md5 successfully but fails to open serial port and obviously i get a "FAIL". any help?

Did you install kies on your comp, kies have driver for your s3, i think odin didnt recognize your s3, that's why its failed, try installing kies first then try again

nope: it is recognized by kies (for which the device is up to date in my country). the firmware is ok, I flashed it already on another s3. the message is "cannot open serial port"
EDIT : sorry folks, I just forgot kies running; that's why the serial port was not available for flashing. now everything's fine

[Q] Can't flash with Odin

Hi guys
I am trying to flash the official XWKF3 firmware with multi-CSC on my SGS2 with Odin but I'm getting an error just before it even flashes. It either says "Cannot read file" and displays a FAIL in red or it shows "SetupConnection" and stays there forever.
Is there any problem with the firmware file or is it with the phone or pc?
The update you are using is outdated. For stock firmware go to:
Samfirmare.com
Select the correct country!
I use a custom rom.

A Samsung Galaxy S II I9100. The firmware comes in one file (downloaded it from here) and I put it on the PDA section as shown on the guide. I get those two errors.
Remove your KIES it causes stuck on setup connection on odin..
Just use the usb driver

[Q] CF Root and stock

Hi all
Noob with SGS2, had it about a week and am CF rooted XWKI4 but think i have installed wrong kernel.
When connected to Kies it says "Your device does not support software upgrading via Kies" with current firmware version as: I9100XWKI4/I9100XEUKH2/I9100XXKL1/I9100XWKI4 (XEU).
How do I get back to stock firmware so I can update to latest firmware via Kies?
As well got the 'Yellow triangle' and bought a USB jig but triangle will not remove after reboot.
Any replies and any SGS2 rooting help in general would be most appreciated.
regards
fs1
Firstly kies doesn't recognise your phone because your running custom firmware, you are running the latest firmware for your phone to this date. To remove you're triangle read the same thread you used to root again second post I think on how to remove the triangle.

The Galaxy S IV is a non-existent phone, which we all would love to get our hands on
Have you tried updating using Kies, or Odin?
If you haven't, you may aswell. If Kies says you cannot upgrade, try downloading the TriangleAway app, from Chainfire and trying again. If that still doesn't work, un-root and then do it.
If you don't like Kies (Like me) then download Odin from http://sammobile.com/firmware and then downloading original firmware from there. You can delete the recovery partition out of the tarball, so CWM stays put If you don't want to muck around with the firmware, update, flash CWM, root again
Hope I could help!
LG familyguy59/Beatsleigher
Get a 4.1.1 firmware from a firmware site (there's threads in general listing all official and leaked firmwares).
Those threads should give a brief explanatikn as to how to flash the firmwares listed.
Some zips are just zipped .tar files with odin. Just extract, and use the odin software to flash whatever .tar file that's there (or was it .md5 file?)
Threads with title cwm or.zip file will require flashing via cwm. Never tried this method so don't trust me on this. I just get my updates via .tar through odin.
All the info is there if you look for it really..

Download the 4.1.2 firmware (if it is released for your region) from Sammobile.com and flash through ODIN. You'll have to re-root again, though.
Cheers!

Download 4.1.2 firmware from any link. Install Mobile Odin. Flash using Mobile Odin and check the Everroot checkbox. Once done you will have all updates and root intalled on your device.

contacts and Apps normally not. (Only you factory reset the phone, then apps will be erased) Flashing so many firmwares but never erasing contacts.
hi, to be fear i had the same problem and all i had to do was to update the firmware using the Samsung kies...once you connect the phone to your computer, will have to open the Samsung kies and the program will automatically ask you if you want to update your firmware; and if you don't know how to get the Samsung kies you will have to go on the samsung website and check in the download section. I hope that I have been enough helpful to you and to anyone else that had or have the same problem  .

He's rooted. Kies won't update it. Kies will only update when it's unmodified, and CSC matches.

Samsung kies

I have flashed a rooted stock tom in Samsung galaxy s3 mini and now I can't connect my phone with kids. I wanted to ask the benefits of kies and how I can use it again.
Thanks in advance.
Anyone answer
kies is samsung's own proprietary software to be used for backing up your data,, contacts etc.. And to upgrade your firmware whenever Samsung releases newer version of Android...

Kies before connecting whether the device status is genuine or not. Since you have already rooted and installed custom ROM , kies will not recognize your device.
Kies makes it easy to transfer / backup your media files, contacts, e.t.c.
You need to install official firmware for your device in case you want it to be recognized via Kies. You can refer sammobile.com for more details.

I don't have a custom rom I have the stock one rooted. But I read that I can use kies only if I have a rom from my country. Where can I find this rom? If I root this rom by flashing superSU will kies be available?
Thanks.
