I'm on rogers in Canada and have a galaxy nexus running 4.1.1 what rom would I use to update to 4.2 from googles site. Also is it possible to brink a phone just by unlocking the boot loader and rooting it
I'm on FIDO in Canada and my Gnex had the OTA update to 4.2.1 some weeks ago already. Try going in "About phone" in the settings and search manually for a system update.

Stay stock.
Clear data for Google framework service.
Then check for system update.
Yes you can brick although it is hard to do. Anything is possible I'd you do not know what you are doing.

I just got a new phone, my mom bought it for me with the money we had saved and she hasn't even paid it whole yet.
I rooted it fine, but then I tried flashing CM10 on it, everything went smoothly but then it got stuck on the CM startup/splash screen or whatever it's called... when I turn it off it automatically reboots and the same thing happens.
it was locked to a carrier, that was probably what screwed it up... I don't know what to do...
if you need any info, please ask. I might know it.
please help :/

Are you sure you have an international GS3?
THANK GOD. I found a stock rom and flashed it and everything wen't back to normal.
and yes, 100% sure it's the 9300, XXBLFB
now there's another problem, it's the stock 4.0.4 rom, and I clicked to update because I want Jelly Bean on it, but it says no updates available? what does that mean? can I flash a 4.1 stock rom over it? and where can I find it, I've been looking with no luck...

did u ever get the JellyBean update to work? I have the tmo S3 and was able to update via Samsungs kies software. However, in sep I had an ATT Galaxy Note and an international factory unlocked Note around for a bit, and the ATT version was supported in Samsung Kies for the ICS upgrade, but the international was not. I believe ICS had to be flashed in the end. I just thought I'd let u know what happened for me, hope it helps. Good luck

can I install any one of those 4.1.1 roms on my branded locked I9300XXBLFB?
do I need to do anything before or just use odin to flash it?
Hi Guys,
I just bought a new Galaxy S3 here in New Zealand and before I start using it, I want to update it to the latest version, I believe 4.1.2 and then root it, can this be done? whats the best option for me? I see the Galaxy Toolkit to do the rooting, is this the most popular/best ?
Also after rooted, can I still do the OTA updates or will I have to flash custom roms?

If 4.1.2 was not yet launched in NZ, then you will not get any update for your phone at the moment.
What you could do is, root your phone and then install the 4.1.2 version (Poland)(root is not required for flashing though). For rooting refer to the stickies in general section. Popular methods are CF-Root 6.4 (incl. CWM as recovery) or CF-Auto-Root (keeps stock recovery) (both can be found in dev. section).
After rooting you will not be able to get OTA updates though, whereas KIES should still work (but you will loose root if you update).
In addition, make sure to read all the stickies and guides for rooting before you touch anything! Especially the EFS backup procedure.
I hope it helps.
Rooting your phone voids it from getting OTA updates.

As said above 4.1.2 is still not available in NZ. So you can flash other ones (like Poland) if needed.

After rooting OTA updates will not work. But you can still get the firmware and flash them through Odin. This will remove root and will have to go through the rooting procedure again.
I feel samsung will release 4.1.2 for other regions soon and my suggestion would be to wait for that and then go ahead with rooting
You don't need to root your phone to install an official firmware!

No one says you need to in this post .

Thanks guys yeah 4.1.2 does not look like its been released yet, I'll wait for it to come out then root cheers!
I used to wait for offical releases, then realised there was no need - the custom ROMs are far better than the official and much faster at new releases than regional Samsung rollout. They also get rid of the battery sapping bling most people only use the once.
If you are going to root anyhow, then the warranty isn't a concern.
Just had bad experiences with 3rd-party ROM's. Had a Desire Z and ran about 5 different roms, cyanogen, gingerbread and ICS variants, mimcry, ilwt, extreme mod, and none of them seemed to run very well after a few weeks of use. The stock ROM on this galaxy is flying like no tomorrow! especially after simply disabling the garbage apps

I'll admit that Samsung could teach HTC quite a few things about writing a good ROM, I'm sticking with customs of the stock jb 4.1.2 for now as it all works so well and saves me having to remember what needs disabling. I tried a few minimalist roms before sticking with the viking one.
I've got a 4.1.2 in NZ but that's because my phone bricked and they updated it when fixing it(4.1.2 supposed to have the fix for bricking)

Ok got a question?
First off I am by no means new to the android dev community as I have developed a rom for the sgs-II for At&t before my when in the toilet, anyways I am now on a Telus Samsung galaxy note I717D running:
Android 4.1.2
Baseband Vers. i717dTLMD1
Kernel Vers. 3.0.31-1112295
Build number: JZO54K.I717DTLMD1
TWRP RECOVERY
The phone is not rooted as far as it tells me however I am able to flash any rom I want through twrp recovery. anyways I am using tmobile sim
the question is this has any one flashed a tmobile or at&t modem/radio onto a Telus phone with any luck? if not any recommendations on getting better signal cause mine is **** at this point when I switched my sII to tmobile my signal was pretty decent not the best but still good.
Ok so after a couple of days and np responses i guess i am off to expirment city and will try what i ever o get my hands on and will report back to let others know

Have you found anything?
Hi, I was wondering if you have found anything with this? I also have the Telus Note i717D on the 4.1.2 Jelly Bean and am having a hard time finding a working root.

Hi there,
From my understanding of your comment you're trying to root your phone correct? If so, I can suggest you check http://www.kingoapp.com. The reason why I suggest it is because it's pretty easy to do; it is how I rooted my i717. Check it out and if you'd like try it.. it's kind of like a one click root way to go about rooting your phone, if you'd like to try obviously.
Cheers,

I'm also stuck into that. My i9506 is running the latest 4.4.2 samsung stock rom, and it is ROOTED (very hard to root btw).
But now, I really need to downgrade it to 4.2.2 stock rom, and I just CANT!! :crying: When trying to flash the 4.2.2 official rom with odin, I receive the following message: SW REV CHECK FAIL: [aboot]Fused > 1 Binary 0
I've been searching day after day, hours after hours, staying the whole day in front of the computer to find a solution to downgrade this phone!!!
How to get rid of this KNOX protection? OMFG??? I don't know where to go: whether I change kernel or bootloader or unroot it. Whatever! I just want it running 4.2.2, doesn't matter if it is stock or not. I simply don't know how to do that.
Please, somebody help us! :crying:
Why on Earth are you posting here and not in the i9506 section??

I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2 S (I605) Running Android 4.1.2. the phone is rooted with TWRP (4.5.0). I was trying to Update to 4.3 but it keeps saying update failed and taking me back to the TWRP menu to reboot.
I want to know if there is a way to update to 4.3 on a rooted phone and if not, what steps work best.
2. I have FoxFi and I don't want to lose it. Is there a workaround for FoxFi if I do update to 4.3

I do know foxfi does work.. now the thing is do you want to have 4.3 and be unlocked still or do you want the OTA..If you want to stay unlocked and rooted just like you are you need to go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=48681499 and follow the directions...
If you want to accept the OTA (which you will be locked and no way of unlocking yet...don't do it) go herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34891181 and flash the MJ9 Odin image
