Okay so managed to hardbrick my phone (wrong pit file, yes my fault).
-The only option is sending it to Samsung for repair, but im a little worried with a download counter of 27! Would they be able to see the download count? (I dont think they will as the things totally gone, but I have no idea) I presumed that they use ODIN in the factory, so would pick up the count on that screen, but as the thing wont even go to that screen, will they see it?
TO MAKE CLEAR: I am not asking about how to fix it myself or anything like that. Couldnt find the info whilst searching: did have a look, nothing addressed download count like above.
Cheers.
No they will just replace board or nand chip so either way they will likely not be checking binary counter.
Bearer of bad news here......
This thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2008589
mentions pit files, a hard bricked GS2 and a mobo replacement at SSC......it also mentions that Samsung was able to get out of warranty repair because they had discovered that the phone had been modified........

I meant if Samsung do not repair it and say its been modified, then what do I do.
I've sent it off to the service centre, lets wait and see.
Oh I see. When I nip into KFC on Sunday, I drive past a building with a sign saying "carphone warehouse".
I wonder what they do????

They'll still offer to repair even if they discover it's been modified.....they'll just charge you for repair. But tbh if that is the case, I'd rather have Samsung charge me for a repair than some unofficial "backstreet" repair shop......

Well if your upgrade preference is N4 or XZ.....go with the Xperia......the N4 has no memory card slot, and the battery isn't "pullable". Whereas Sony are one of the most open and cooperative organizations when it comes to working with the dev community = plenty of stable cusROMs for Sony phones.....

Well, sent it off, hoped for the best. Thought id let you know what happened:
-Got it back today, fully works, and the counters reset. Running the Nordic Jellybean with the new Siyah 6 beta 5.
Pro: my wallet is safe
Con: No new phone
Just need to make sure the DL counters now kept on zero, so excessive use of the jig and old bootloader to come!
Lol...just be careful when using a jig as I've heard (cmiiw) that they *can* "super brick" your phone.....
And BTW....congrats on avoiding a potentially nightmare inducing bill...

Got a new note for warranty exchange yesterday. I want to revert the old one I am sending back to bone stock including the clockwork mod recovery and the counter. The usb port stopped working. It is stock rooted ics. How do I flash a stop recovery/ Is there a way to do this? If it is posted already I haven't found it yet.
Thanks,
Why worry? You have the new replacement. I'd just put it in the envelope and say si-ya-narah.
Att can charge you the cost of the replacement if they decide you broke agreement ...
They can just bill you after the fact...

Hmm... lets see ... they can deny warranty and charge me $599.
This was a lot of help.
Thanks,
Without the working USB port I don't think it ALL can be done. If you did a NAND backup of your stock ROM like you should have then restore it first. Put all that ATT bloat back on there. If not stick with what you have and do a factory reset. Then install the counter reset using CWM. And the best you can do is keep your fingers crossed that they do not catch the custom recovery.
And don't forget to change your radio/baseband/modem back to the one that matches the ROM if you have changed it.
You can use a terminal emulator to push the stock recovery back in and delete su and busybox, Then reboot and it will be unrooted.

This is a forum of users ranging from complete noob to Jedi master, but its not on demand customer service.
The process usually works fine if you give it enough time.
You got a good suggestion from studacris, and if there's any further questions just come back.
First I don't mean to attack or be harsh to you...
Sir, you opened the thread looking for assistance, correct? Although you may not agree with some of the ideas/thoughts, you can try your method and see if it works. But the least you can do is thx these individuals, that are providing for your post...instead the sarcastic remark. Maybe you didn't meant it that way? But with a join date of 2010, you know where the thanks button is located.
If you are worried about warranty denial and the fees, them maybe you keep it stock your next phone?
Hope you solve your issue btw the method given by studacris would seem the best, but your call sir.

But my honest thought was "this guy has a hardware issue that has absolutely nothing to do with rom customization. Its already stock. So at&t won't care about root. Just put it in the bag and send it."
Anyway, good luck and I hope your new phone works out better.
Yes you are right. As you can see by my posts I was only addressing rangercaptain by the 'helpful' comment and no one else. I appreciate any and all useful suggestions.
I am not worried about fees or anything else. I just don't want to pay them If I don't have to. I simply asked for help and rangercaptain makes a useless suggestion so I made a comment about that. Not about anything else.

hi there, I unfortunately bricked my phone ( as in thise thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756242 ), the thing is that i can still use my warranty, but I changed the whole screen my self a few weeks ago, and the screws are a bit dommaged (see the picture below), I replace the official sticker that was under the battery so it looks like genuine, but i wonder if they will say something ?
do you think i should order new screw and replace the one dommaged?
Thanks you
PS: tell me if you want to see the screw in a better quality , i did the picture pretty fast ^^

Yes they will notice it and yes you should buy new screws.Whether they will refuse warranty is up to them. You better hope they dont notice the different screen and the imei sticker has been off and on also.
A new board can cost up to £200

But in your country Samsung’s Employees are Intelligent not bunch of crioks like here.. So the chances are they will identify it... But give a try and say the lie

Seems like buying 7 screws maybe too much to pay for you.So dont bother, send the phone to Samsung as maybe someone like Stevie Wonder is working there.

Hello there, a few update, I just drop my phone to a samsung center next to me.
The guy was not very nice but in a way he was funny lol.
He "said hum there is some humidity etc did you put it in the water?" I said "no" ( it never went in the water )
Then he said that he wont do the repair himself because if it's off warranty then sammy dont pay him ( " i dont want to work for free grrr " lol )
So he said "do you really want me to send it to sammy?"( he said samsung lol ) "because if they said it 's off warranty then to get it back you pay 29€" i said "ok no problem" i asked him what he thinks about the damage he said that it's probably the motherboard he said it's more than 200€ i said "ok"
And if it's in warranty it's free ^^
I said that i used kies on the device and that was the cause.
There was some dirt under the battery cover, you know the usual one in the cell phone but nothing like big deal, do you think it's might pose a problem?
Since the phone never touched water, there is nt a chance that sammy will said that, is there?
Any way in two weeks he will call me back
And also i told him that the earphones wasnt working( it wasnt ) and that the camera is ****ty ( probably bad lens, i compared to my sister's one and it's like day and night ) do you think they will take a look?
Thanks you for you reading , i appreciate !
up, if anyone has somes answers , thanks
Hi there few update, they just send it back and I got it, for free! They didnt even notice that I changed the screen my self
maybe just maybe they noticed the screen change and swapped it for a older one which will go when your warrenty does run out. did the store man ask if you want ext. warrenty lol just a thought without causing a stirr ive heard of cases like this happening.
No he didnt propose me anything, I kind of recognize the screen i put , ( new etc ) and the place I gave my phone is just a center that send it directly to sammy so they dont do anything themself on the phone!
a bit off topic, but my sensitive input ( menu and back ) dont work very well, first they have less light than my sister one, and it seems you have to touch them "more" to do go back etc , is it a known problem? thanks

I think it is the screen mate, I changed my digitizer on a Galaxy Gio with a new lcd and the touch was so crap and wonky it drove me to get the S2 (which I am forever thankful for)
One thing I have learnt when it comes to these devices, never and I repeat never replace the screen yourself because guaranteed it is a cheaper knock off that is actually not the "original" as they all claim to be on ebay. Mine was "original" and it looked 99.9% like the old one but there were slight differences if you looked at it closely, here and there. And boy oh boy did it not work like the original and the screen was terrible, so I've decided that personally I will rather pay Sammy to have it fixed properly.
Of course if they want to charge me more than the phone was actually worth brand new than I would say stuff it and just get a new one.
Yes may be but apart this problem the screen is perfect so... it was 130€ delivery included so im OK with et.

try samsungdive.com n raise an FIR with police..
Had you set up the tracking with the Samsung app? or maybe with Avast! anitivirus?
If you've not set up any tracking I'm not sure what you can do :crying:
Always first thing.....
1.....alert provider
2......file a report with police
3.....if you haven't enabled tracker that about all you can do unfortunately.
If you had a stock Samsung ROM, you'd have Samsungdive. With that it is possible to locate your phone ANYWHERE in the world, and you could have found it by now.
However, some poop-heads find Samsung Dive and the Samsung Framework are unecessary and remove them from their custom ROMs.
Samsung Dive is one of the most valuable additions to the stock ROMs and one of the TOP 5 reasons I keep my phones with stock ROMs, although rooted.
Another choice is to use apps like "Where's my Droid" (US$ 5), and similar apps, and although they aren't as efficient as Samsung Dive, they can help you locate your phone.
You can try a remote install of plan b - be persistent, it sometimes takes many attempts to get it on your phone.

Samsung Dive is worthless, if someone wants to keep the phone. A 30 seconds Google search shows how to perform a factory reset that erases all SamsungDive configuration. A thief has just to press three keys when booting the phone. It works even when the phone is protected by PIN or something else.

Try samsungdive.
Guys...almost a month has passed....I tried samsung dive but still no success....Although in my google account I see my stolen s3 is stil showing up as one of devices ...I filed fir a month ago...still no feedback by cops...feeling quite sad...
If your phone is using Google location services you can try logging into Google latitude from a pc/other device and looking at the location history.

Sorry but if your device has not surfaced within a month, it's very possible that it either does not work anymore (broken, lost and left in rain, ...) or that the thief/finder actually bothered to factory-reset the device (as someone else said... like 5 seconds of work)
As sorry as I am to say it, but I believe you can give up hoping to get it ever back.
This happened to me as well. Unfortunately I was never able to find the phone. Another thing that can be done is try to block IMEI number. However not all carriers want to do this as I lernt. I also send the email to Samsung and ask the if they could add the number to internetional black list but I am not sure they did it. Sorry about your loss. I know how it feels.
Guys just suggest me a new device.Sad as it feels I need u r opinions.
M not gonna buy s3 again bcoz I will feel the pain of losing it.
I am against htc bcoz of battery , lg is crappy and motorola/sony don't worked so far for me
before coming to love android with my gs3.
Though suggestions are welcome.
I like to do heavy usage, browsing, gaming ,developing etc on my android.

Airplane mode.
If you want to go deeper than Airplane Mode, you will have to create a customized firmware for it. Here is a link to a thread in the Captivate (SGH-i897) forum about turning the captivate into something like an Ipod Touch. It may give you and idea of what would be involved.

I exactly wanted to do that, but I am no developer, I wish someone could do that

No, but if you have the time, following that thread would be a good way to get into light development. Essentially, all you have to do is take someone's existing firmware distribution, and do some relatively easy modifications. You would have to learn the tools and how to use them. If you can contact the author of that thread, he said he is willing to show someone what modifications to make. It may still apply on our phone.
Problem is that if someone doesn't have an interest, they are not going to do something for someone else. Maybe if you offered a bounty, someone might take it up.

I'll give whatever support I can. I don't know the tools real well, but I've played with some of them a little, and I do know some windows programming and some other stuff.
Edit: Did a little looking around. You probably will not hear back from the original poster as he appears to be inactive on xda for most of the last year. Here is his original thread which has basic instructions for removing the phone components on the Captivate. This might work on this phone. I think the second thread was to make the interface more pretty.

I never did listen from him as u said. Hmmn but i did visit this thread and did as he did which was quite very simple to be honest. I deleted the phone and telephony apk and csc file. And all other files which were related to phone activities in one or other way.
And well with that the cell stand by went away...
Now i get yellow phone signals
Anyways their is mo cell standby in battery drain
But all is not well i get kernel wakelocks which are keeping my phone awake and draining battery like hell when in standby or screen off...

How do i get rid of this svnet
Svnet i read this wakelock gets active for 6 secs when the phone is looking searching for signals.
And also do anyone know how to uninstall the modem in my phone thanks
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk 2
Uninstall the modem or flash a new one? You can turn air plane mode on if you want to turn off signal and data when you're in a bad coverage area.
Airplane mode not an option...
How to uninstall the modem.....

Just flash the new one over it in cwm. It replaces the one currently there everytime you flash a new one.

Sorry you said not to, but I have to ask why? Feel free to tell us this long story. We like reading!
This should be good. I've cam across a few roms that get the phone stuck at the samsung screen. Take odin to push. Im at work ill try to post them here tomorrow.
Lol. Making my spot for the show.

I got the burritos. While we are waiting, any
guesses why this question?
Perhaps to demonstrate to a carrier representative that the phone is borked in an attempt to obtain a replacement, but maintaining the ability to recover the device in case the plan backfires? Not to be disrespectful to the OP, just the cynic in me I guess.

My guess is that he is going to try for a free upgrade with the boot loop. Then, if it fails, then he can restore his phone.
If I am wrong, I am sorry. But, there is no other possible reason I can think of.

Boot looping or soft brick will only get you in trouble. At&t will still able to get into recovery and see your flash counter raised. Then say bye bye to warranty!
Hahahahahahahahahaha anyone actually knowing what recovery is let alone a flash counter at a local store.... oh man. That made my day.
Btw flash counter is shown in download mode not recovery.

I'm thinking more positive than you cynics. I think he wants to make sure he can recover from it in case of an Emergency. Like a practice for the big day. Or maybe to show off for his gal. "Look babe ... I can fix this" ... Or here in KY ... It's ... "hey hold my beer and watch this"
Who knows.
Yeah, that comment about a store rep booting into recovery and checking the flash counter was a good one. It was so funny I laughed so hard I sharted.
BubbaJoe, I'm staying positive too and saying I'm positive he wants to get another phone.
I think he wants to impress his girlfriend

The long awaited Story!
Well First off thanks everyone for not helping me out at all lol! Seems the story is the only reason why you guys even bothered to reply to the question lol. Luckily for me I decided to just download a jellybean Rom and dirty flash and it sure did put me in a boot loop...not entirely what i was looking for because instead of being at the Samsung screen it was a Slimbean screen kept flashing. All that aside, at the end of the day it wasnt even necessary.
But the good part for you all!!! THE STORY!!
I have a Galaxy Note right...Well my sister in law's boyfriend said he had "found" one. She let me know that whenever she tried turning it on it would but 2-4 seconds afterwards it would just shut off. I told her to bring me the phone to check it out, when she brough it to me I tried turning it on and no luck. i tried my battery in their phone and no luck... So then i tried putting it into Recovery...it wouldnt it would just vibrate over and over with black screen. I even tried putting it into download mode to use odin...still no luck. I let her know there really was nothing i could do, what i could do was sell it for parts on ebay. or maybe sell it as is if price was good. she said ok. She was trying to sell it to me and have me fix it and keep it but as i saw i couldnt i refused offer and offered here to do so on ebay.
weeks passed and I never put it up for aution.... she let me know to give the phone back as her dude had a friend who wanted to buy it and he was giving him $100. I ignored it and a week passed by.
I was bored at home and said shoot might as well do some research and see whats really wrong with it or check if someone else has had this experience...and sure enough there was a thread on here. It seems that stupid power button on the phone was stuck. Another member asked the question in this thread and my man Bubbajoe40356 along with some other guys gave us the answered we wanted. After messing with the phone finally got it into download mode and also recovery with pulling out the battery each time after automatic shut off. Opened up the phone, cleaned out the power button and voila!!!
As the phone turned on I saw it was some ones phone i knew (not friend but i knew her) it was actually my sister in laws friend... So i told her i dont think your dude found this phone he JACKED it from your friend...her response was "LMFAO he probably did"... So i figured i dont know the girl and this dude f***ed her over so im going to do the same to him.
I told him I had already sold it on ebay and only got $60 for it and i needed to ship it.
(now the part that this whole thread was created for)
If he was to ask for the phone back and say no F that than he would get a Bootlooping phone and make it seem like phone was still messed up. If he didnt and went along with my plan then he would say ok give me the money and i could revert easily...
Long story short, he took the money and im left with a perfectly fine working note. Im guessing it was already stolen prior as it was running on tmobile since it was already rooted and blaze 4g modem was flashed on it. But I will call Att and make sure and see whats the deal. My plan is to sell it and make money off his stealing ass!

hahahaha she actually hates when i mess with phones... I learned what little i know on mine and hers lol hers was a headache back then. rainbow screens and everything lol she wasnt too impressed and is less now.
First ... Glad we could help diagnose and help fix it ... Even if it was inadvertently..your sister in law and her boy friend sound like peopl I would distance myself from .. As she probably knew all along.
It was a good story well worth the wait. But I personally hate the ending. My rewrite would be to have contacted the rightful owner and return the phone. Also giving her the name of the person you got it from.
My house was broken into years ago and a few things stolen. One thing was a 45 automatic. After 5 years the police in the next town called me in and to my surprise ... returned it to me. I would have been happy to reward the person returning it ...but it was recovered in a drug bust. So they got their reward.
Not sure what will happen when you call att...but personally ... I would never keep it.
