Forgotten lock screen password - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

My friend has a Galaxy Note and he has forgotten the lock screen password. I rooted the phone and also installed CWM and did a backup. He has files on the phone (pictures and sms messages and more) that he wants to save and a total wipe/hard reset is not what he wants to do at this point. Is there anything I can do to this phone to get around this forgotten lock screen password?

Thanks for the suggestion but it says 'not compatible with this phone'. His Note is on AT&T and I have no idea why it's not able to be installed.

Flash latest twrp in PDA slot with Odin..it just replaces recovery. Use the recovery file manager to move files to external SD card. Wipe except external. Reflash ROM. You now have access to phone. Files should be safe on external SD card if you didn't wipe it.
You also could mount phone to PC through recovery and transfer files to PC. Then just wipe everything and reflash ROM. Then move files back. Easy way.

I was able to get around my PIN lock by doing this (I'm on stock odexed ICS):
1. Dirty flashed JellyBam ROM. It didn't boot all the way (no surprise) so I powered down and rebooted into CWM.
2. Then I dirty flashed BSX. It booted w/o prompting for my PIN. My phone was still setup with all my apps and launcher how I left it and my pics and stuff were still there.
For the record I am not suggestion this "method" over anyone else's. Just trying to help.

Looks like I've been sleeping on TWRP., didn't know it could do that.

Thank you so much gentlemen! I'll be able to try the TWRP suggestion on Monday when he's back at work, that's a great idea and the safest for now.

I saved the data with the TWRP and then reset the phone...thanks again Darkchyld!

[Q] Did I F my phone?

I was using the Tard Rom and tried to switch over to miui prime 360. This put me into a boot loop. I tried playing around and fixing it. Nothing worked, so I kept searching my options, and like an idiot hit apply update.zip. Now I'm stuck at the vibrant screen. No loop just stuck. Any help would be much appreciated.
EDIT: Got into download mode. Is there anyway I can get software back but save my pictures? I have pics of my prego wife that I would prefer not to lose. Thanks for the help
Can you access download mode?
Just figured out how to get into it. Will I have to do a total reinstall to stock or is there a way to save my pictures that I have?
This is kind of trippy for me... Because i Odined back to stock yesterday and all of my files were perfectly intact. But i odined a 2nd time later that day and they all went away ... But if you can access recovery menu im sure you could save your files.
EDIT: In case you do decide on using odin and your pictures are gone try this: http://www.recovermyfiles.com/
I actually heard of a guy who used it to save his files from his android. I dont know if it will work for your case though.
I tried holding the volume buttons and the power button to get into recovery. Every time it just rebooted to the vibrant screen and would stick there forever! Any suggestions?
Sorry man this is about all i can help, im really not that good with this stuff.. i just joined a the scene little less than a month ago. The best i can say is to try that file recovery program i mentioned above, although im not sure if it works for FAT32 format disks like the vibrant storage.
I wish you the best of luck man. And if you do decide to odin, i just thought i'd mention this because i made this mistake ... TAKE YOUR SIM AND SD OUT BEFORE YOU ODIN!
EDIT: Oh wait this just hit me... did u take a backup of your phone through recovery menu before you changed your roms?
Yes I totally backed it up. I just can't access anything.
Im guessing you just kept your backup on your internal storage and didn't back it up to you memory card? That kinda defeates the purpose don't you think? Wow this is starting to feel pretty hopeless.

Haha, yeah. Oh well. Thanks for the help!
Your pictures should be fine. flashing a new ROM does not wipe the sd card. as long as you can get into recovery you can flash a new rom ( maybe back to the one you were using) or download another one.( download one to your pc then through recover go to mounts and storage, mount usb, then you can copy the new rom to your phone and flash it. or just odin back to stock your gallery should remain uninfected. as long as you dont format sd you are fine

He can't access recovery so there is no flashing a rom.
And the files are on his internal storage so they will be deleted like the rest of his internal storage in he restores stock. That's what's complicating things.

If his pics are on his internal storage then they should still be there after an Odin flash. I've flashed back to jfd with Odin dozens of times with repartion checked and never had Odin wipe my internal memory

How to get cwm 5.5.0.4 to see next SD card

I can't seem to get cwm to make a nandroid backup to the external SD with my att gs3. Other people seem to be able to do it but I can't figure it out, any suggestions?
+1, i cant seem to get my sg3 to mount extsd...i tried to install zip from extsd, and im getting an error, cant mount extsd...help...thanks in advanced...
Hello.
You need to make sure that the external sdcard is using FAT32 as it's file system, as CWM doesn't support exFAT or NTFS.
Thanks, now on to my next problem...my card was formatted to exFat...and when I'm trying to format it with my computer, it's only giving me the option to format it to exFat and NTFS...how do I format it to fat32? Thanks in advanced...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
You could probably do it with third party software or within CWM recovery consol. I am able to format my 64Gb card to FAT32, but according to Microsoft, 32Gb is the maximum volume size for FAT32 file system.
What is it listed as in cwm? I dont see extsdcard.
If I recall, there are two different versions of CWM 5.5.0.4. The first version of the that came out before the tool kit for US SGS3 was released and it didn't have the option to save a backup to the extsccard. I believe that the CWM in the tool kit has been modified to allow backing up to the extsdcard.
After reflashing the CWM recovery to my suprise the version number is still the same but now it the backup and restore options there is listed as follows. (I don't recall these additions to the earlier version of CWM 5.5.0.4)
The changes I noticed will be marked with asterics.
backup
restore
advanced restore
*backup to internal sdcard
*restore from internal sdcard
*advanced restore from internal sdcard
I don't recall seeing the options before to backup to internal sdcard. Did you install CWM from the Tool kit?

FYI. I have been an iPhone user since the first iPhone simply because I didn't know about Android at the time. I was getting very sick of apple's control over the whole user experience so I decided to look at the Android system. The SGS3 is actually my first Android phone and while I'm not new to jail breaking the iphone, I am new Android jail breaking - if you will, and I find it far superior to iOS.
There is so much to learn things of wich that have been learned over the years, it's a little hard to figure out where to start.
I hope you have success as I did. Nandroid backups and restore to the extsdcard seem like a must.
Okay guys thanks for all the help...what I had to do was d/l a 3rd party app, and that did the trick...and now cwm recovery is able to mount my extsdcard...Thanks...remember to back up all of your data to your computer before re-formatting...

what 3rd party app did you use
I seem to be having the same problem. I can't see it in cwm. However, I can go into partitions, mount it (still doesn't show), and format it. After I boot up it does show that it's formatted.
Ihave formatted using a3rd party app on my pc. I have formatted using fat32.
But sure what I am missing to get it to work in cwm. I did flash using the kit. Didn't know there was a different version....

Is it the one refered in post #7? Which one did you use? There is one that is 7,000kb and one that is 556kb (this one says it is version 0.87 whereas the one I have says v3.0.7 on the zip file).
Thanks
It's the link in the first thread. The one to the rootsprint.zip file. In that zip contains the cmw for rooting the tmobile s3.

Thanks but I need the Sprint. I know this says it is for the Sprint Siii but the root method I used said to use CWM v3.0.7. Not sure if this version will work. Don't want to risk it.
so, if you watch the video in that thread it says it is the same one for the sprint. Anyway, does anyone have a link to the "good" cmw that will see my sd card?
I don't think I can link to anything yet, but the CWM version I am using is from the US Toolkit for AT&T, which is hosted in this very website.
the backup and restore options will backup directly to the extsdcard, you'll know if you have the right version becuase you will have the option to back and restore to the internal sdcard too.
For those of you that are wondering what 3rd party app i used to format to Fat32, i used easeUs partition. i dont have the link but i know that google should give the results your looking for...hope this helps...

OK I wasn't sure of that. When I just try the "backup" option it says "can't mount backup path". I'm assuming its because my 64gig card is formatted to exFat instead of Fat32? Does the "format sdcard" option format the internal or external SD and if it is for the external will it format it to Fat32? Sorry for the noob questions.
thanks.
found cwm v4 now all is fine.

Oh My.. What did I do??

Tried to flash MeanRom to my EVO Lte after using CMX for a week or so with no problems.
Now I'm all turned around and I have no clue what's going on. My phone will still boot into recovery so I'm assuming all hope is not lost. However I can't access my internal sd, can't use the adb shell command (I get: "- exec '/system/bin/sh' failed: No such file or directory (2)"), I've tried to flash CMX back onto my phone but the files seem to have disappeared from it's internal memory. adb reboot recovery works, sends me to TWRP. But once in TWRP I get confused and frustrated because I can't seem to find a way to just flash a damn ROM onto my phone. None of my backups are listed in "restore" and I had three there this morning. WHAT GIVES?
I'm using a Mac and don't have access to Linux or Windows, I was going to try to unroot it and start from there but I can't seem to find a way to unroot the phone on a Mac. Unless I'm googling wrong.

you did save your backups to external not internal right?

if you can get into recovery you should be able to load a rom zip on sd card and flash from external card.

I saved them to internal. I don't have an external yet.. Single mom, had to buy my kid shoes. Damned priorities...
I can get into recovery I just don't have an external sd that I can put a zip on. I thought I had an extra from my old HTC G2 but I've been unable to locate it.
Should I run out to Fry's and buy an external sd card or is there a way to fix it without the external?
Edit: Btw, I'm s-ON. I'm still fairly new ish to this stuff so I'm not 100% what bootloader I'm using. Is it the same as Hboot? Hboot is 1.19.0000

Have you tried to format storage through the boot loader?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
yes, once its formatted, add a rom, prefereably meanrom, its the only one I've tried that has reliably installed the kernel. Give it 5-10 minutes, the phone will hang on writing kernel and it will reboot 2-3 times and it will hang each time, just let it do its thing

No, that literally just occured to me as I refreshed the page. Off to try that now.
I don't have an HTC phone with me now to show the exact steps but usually when you get to the boot loader it will have an option for formatting storage. Then try to go into recovery and mount.

Alright, so flashed CMX back to my phone from the external sd. Worked beautifully. I now have a rom running on my phone.
Still can't figure out the internal sd.... Is there anyone who can tell me step-by-step what to do to reformat it or fix it or whatever? I feel like this should be a relatively easy fix, am I right? Why can't I figure it out?? Ugh.
Reboot to recovery, select mount, select mount USB storage, plug it into pc, open disk utility and select sd, select erase and choose fat
When you're booted up an go in to Menu/Settings/Storage is nothing showing under Internal storage or Phone storage?

CWM Recovery Now Wiping Properly

So I have searched and searched and cannot get a definitive answer. I am currently using CWM as my recovery. I go to flash a new ROM and wipe like I used to. ONLY thing is that wiping doesn't actually wipe. What I mean is things in the down load folder or random folders not on my sd card are still there. This would all get wiped before but ive had this problem since getting the S4. Ive had some root problems before so I had to unroot and reroot so everything was wiped. Now I have been running smoothly without needed to odin back to stock.
What am I doing wrong or what could be the problem. I want to wipe the whole device except external sd card. In CWM I usually select the factory reset wipe, partition, and dalvik. Should I be doing something different?
TIA

Probably need to hit the data partition as well. Never had a problem with cwm myself.
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
Your download folder shouldn't get wiped on a factory data reset.
What partition are you choosing? Sorry i didn't use cwm, and i lost custom recovery with a warranty replacement, but sounds like you are maybe not choosing your internal.
Also why do you need the sd card wiped? As long as your app data isn't carrying over you should be fine switching roms.
Also twrp worked for this so really you could just switch.

I had some very bad experiences with TWRP on this device. Never on any other device. I prefer TWRP. I should try the taking out the sd card and wiping everything. Thanks I just odin'd back to stock and rooted. I was getting memory notifocations and random stuff. I am going to try TWRP I know its been updated since I had the problems.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Memory notifications are common in this device, many times inaccurate on touchwiz. They're more about the allocated space for apps and not internal total. Next time check your storage tab in settings, of you're not out of free space on the sd card but still get warnings then wiping that partition won't help.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
I was getting low. It had been a while since rooting so I had loads of unwanted folders (temp stuff) and stuff from other roms. I was down to 1.3GB.The notifications are fine except certain apps or games were starting to not work properly. I literally had to scroll through about 4 pages of folders in my sdcard0 folder. Now that ive rerooted I have about a page and a half. I now have 8.78GB free space.
Edit: after rerooting I wasnt able to get TWRP. In Goomanager I kept getting "no recoveries were found for your device". So I am still on CWM.
