[Q] Bootloader unlocking tutorial? - HTC Droid DNA

I have been looking at the following on the XDA site but the instructions are not that great and I am by no means a noob when it comes to root/unlocking android phones.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36976137#post36976137
I am wondering after I download SuperCID, install it, and run it. Following the tutorial I am suppost to verify I see super CID and 22222 something from the bootloader. The tutorial said nothing about HOW to get into the bootloader.
I did search googlefoo and figured out how to get into the bootloader. You hold the power button and volume button down as well upon phone startup. This is not in his steps and should be because most people might not know that especially with a screenshot.
Does anyone have a screenshot of what I should or shouldnt see or the steps involved to actually unlock the bootloader. His steps are pretty vague. I have also searched youtube for anything relevant but can't find a decent step by step tutorial with helpful screenshots.
Thanks,
Hitman9921

Yes, you get into the bootloader/fastboot by holding volume down button when powering on the phone. Fastboot is then used to verify the SuperCID worked properly (by returning 222222).
The rest of the steps are outlined on htcdev.com. Since you are following the steps on that website, I believe the creator of the Supercid utility didn't feel it necessary or desirable to outline steps steps that are on a different website. The steps on that website should actually be fairly self-explanatory. The steps are provided by HTC, and that website is used to unlock the bootloader for almost all of HTC's phones.

When you boot into the bootloader it is still saying locked. I dont see any 22222 do you have a screenshot of what I should see or is this part located on the HTC site? Basically Im stuck as to what to do next after I am in the bootloader.
Thanks in advance,
Greg

It's supposed to say locked. You haven't unlocked it yet.
Go into bootloader, hit the power button on fastboot.
Now plug it into your computer. Open up a command prompt and run the get cid command. I believe it is "fastboot own getcid" but don't hold me to that.
If it is all twos then go to htcdev and follow their instructions.

[How-to] R800x Root

We can no longer unlock your bootloader with codes. Please do not ask me or ash for bootloader unlock codes. We can not help you.
This thread is now here for historical purposes representing times when people were free to do what they wanted with their devices. Fsck yourself with a rake, Verizon.
The bootloader has been unlocked. Let's get our freaking root on.
Disclaimer: Read through these instructions in their entirety. If these don't make sense to you, you do not need to be rooting your phone. Nobody here has the time required to teach you how to use cmd in Windows. We will not baby step you through how to use ClockworkMod Recovery. Root is not a mythical land with fairies and unicorns where nothing ever goes bad. If you don't know how to properly install a driver in Windows, you probably don't need an Android device to begin with, let alone a rooted one.
These instructions are intentionally left vague. Do your research on these terms. Understand what you are doing before you do it.
tldr: if you fsck your phone up, it's on you and only you.
Easy Way (YRMV!)
This is by far the easiest method. You will have to read between the lines here. I will not detail all the steps. Please record your experiences in this thread and let me know how it all goes! We're all still learning. This is basically copied from Bin4ry's CWMR Thread so thanks go to him! The easy steps below assume a lot of basic knowledge steps. Like unlocking the bootloader. If you're unsure of what to do, you probably shouldn't be doing it.
Download the CWM recovery from multiupload
Boot off of that file (DO NOT FLASH): fastboot boot recoveryPLAY.img
Copy this to your memory card and flash it with the booted recovery
Reboot and test root
Second Method: Advanced User Instructions
Unlock your bootloader. Check out Ash's thread: thread
Download Doom's all in one kernel from here
Use fastboot to "hot boot" the kernel: fastboot boot boot.img
Your phone may or may not boot. It doesn't matter. Let it be for a while, then power it off.
Doom's kernel will have rooted your stock system.
If You're On A Mac...
Or maybe just need some general help with some more detailed insturctions than are labeled here, check out the awesome post that Cubsfan3493 made for everyone. He's even got a downloadable PDF with pictures. Go give him some thanks at his post!
Is the R800x running 2.3.2 or 2.3.3. There's reports that Gingerbreak and alternatives are no longer working in 2.3.3.
It's running 2.3.2 right now. OTA updates say its up to date. I'm trying to figure out if I'm just having a generic issue with the breaks (like memory cards for example) or if Verizon maybe patched the exploit in their 2.3.2 build.
I have tried pretty much everything as well, I really hope some dev's start to pop their noises in here as I am a bit sad about the activity so far
I've been trying to root mine as well. The discussion I've been having is in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097856
I'll keep an eye on both threads, but I have had no luck so far.
I'm guessing it's something they fixed in the final Verizon build before release. Curious... What's your build #? Mine is 3.0.A.2.184.

Yes i think verizon fixed the exploit gingerbreak uses before releasing the handset in the usa. When i was on build number 3.0.A.2.184 (uk xplay R800i) it rooted in like 30 seconds.
But in the new update 3.0.1.A.0.145 the exploit has been fixed. So all devices around the world have been left unrootable (for now ) the devs will figure away out.
I think the uk version 2.3.3 build 3.0.1.A.0.145 has been rooted (for unlocked bootladers) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1098736 So if your bootloader is unlocked soon it maybe possible. If its locked your stuck waiting with the rest of us for a rooting method on locked devices.
I saw you updated from another post, did you lose root access after the update?

Yes i did. But the fixes added in the update are worth loosing root, for the time being . Being unable to root only applies to people with a locked bootloader. But im guessing devs from the arc and play forum are possibly looking for ways to root with a locked bootloader
Yeah I have the option to unlock my bootloader but don't want to just yet. I'll hold off on the update until a new version of gingerbreak arrives

For the record, it seems like the bootloader is unlockable on the R800x. Fastboot is totally accessible by the same means and the oem unlock command is recognized, the phone is responsive, it's just looking for a key, the same as the GSM counterpart. The only difference is that the Verizon version doesn't have an IMEI (or does it.... since it does have a sim card slot....), just an ESN. So obviously you can't obtain an unlock key from this number.

Wonder if you pop a pre-paid SIM in the slot (or try a friend's AT&T/T-Mobile SIM) and disabled the CDMA radio if you could get an IMEI to pop up on the keypad using *#06#. Might work? I have no clue... and you'd still have to send it to SE and hope they clear it.
I have a few SIMs here that I could try. Ill see what I come up with in a little bit. My gut is telling me that Verizon probably has the SIM slot firmware disabled. Thats only because they havn't officially mentioned it anywhere. In fact, the slot itself is actually hidden by a piece of plastic that you have to remove. One wouldnt have any idea it was there unless you were looking for it and even then you feel like you're breaking your phone to access it.
I also considered hooking it up to QPST to see if it would grab some serial numbers out of the device. Can anyone confirm if this is a qualcomm chip inside the phone?
I just tried a T-mo and an AT&T SIM, neither give me any sort of insertion notification or acknowledgement that they are present. So I'd say the slot is firmware disabled. But it should still have an IMEI, right? That would be programmed by Qualcomm out of the factory before Ericsson would have even installed it. Or am I taking crazy pills?
do a ADB devices on your phone it gives what I think is a IMEI number and if you put the first 14 in on sony's site it gives you a unlock code, i am to much of a wussy to try it tho lol.

more than willing to be take a chance on mine. i ran adb devices. got code. first 14 digits (minus the b) sent to sony and got an unlock code.
next steps i'm confused on. how do i boot to fastboot mode? i tried holding menu key and inserting usb... didnt' seem to do anything...
ran
9. In the cmd windows type in fastboot.exe -i 0x0fce getvar version
and it did nothing just sat there (waiting for device).
Is there an indication you are in fastboot mode? should 0fce be different on our phones? any ideas?
EDIT: its hold search, not menu, got it to fastboot mode and got response.. trying now. will post results
EDIT 2 : and fail.

Neither the adb devices nor the fastboot devices codes have anything to do with the IMEI number.

[Q] Q/A Official ATT Gingerbread OTA UL BL Root

Thx for your support help and patience to me, kind of new in this stuff, here is my question and I hope someone with absolutly real experience can answer.
Here is my reality, I have an Atrix with the new OTA update gingerbread, no UL BL, no root, no mod, clean...Can I still unlock the bootloader with the2dcourt guide in briefMobile? or I am stuck in the world of no mod forever? This is because I am tired of searching. someone guy s say you can, other say can´t (BriefMobile for example)...I really apreciate the help and a little guide just the names of treats or files I would search
I'm in the same boat, was waiting for the official update before making any mods, and I have to say, after a couple of hours on here this morning I'm a bit confused.
I got root fine (brief mobile's is solid for that) but now I'm trying to figure out the BL. Some posts say the OTA will hard brick if an SBF is flashed, others point to guides that use the SBF flash...
You can still unlock the BL with pudding and install CWM to flash custom rome. Use the preinstall method to root or use a pre-rooted custom rom.
DO NOT try to flash back to a stock froyo build or you will hard brick.

You will only hard brick with the OTA if you attempt to flash back to 4.1.83 or earlier stock builds. You can use the fruity cake builds (as they have pudding in them) to go back if you had to.
From here on out you have to use pudding to unlock the boot loader to enable custom rom flashing. Just follow the pudding thread for more info on that.
You can't flash an older SBF file, that will cause you to brick. The SBF files you should avoid are pretty much all of them except Gingerbread, Unlock, and Radio SBF's.
You can unlock your device even though you've updated. But you're stuck with that bootloader forever, but you can always downgrade with a fruit cake I believe.
It all seems confusing at first, but you'll get the hang of it!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I had run several custom roms on my G1, but much less of that experience is proving to be helpful than I had hoped.
Thanks everyone for your speedy replies, I'll go give pudding a shot after breakfast.
if i flash pudding, just the unlock part and then fastboot the unlock....will i have to load a rom, or will gingerbread 2.34 still be there?
Okay, so the official pudding thread recommends beginners follow Brief Mobile's BL unlocking guide. I did, and got the message "oem unlock is not implemented". However, the 1st step in the guide is "If you’re on Gingerbread, skip to step 13". I am on GB from the OTA, but the guide was published a month ago, before the OTA update.
I'm guessing they said that because at the time it was published, you would need to have already done those steps to be on GB, so I may need to go back and follow through all the steps I skipped the first time. But if they had GB users skip steps because they would be harmful to GB phones, then that would be bad... Advice?

Go through the whole thing. If you soft brick, just run fastboot oem unlock again.

Step by step ULBL, Root for OTA GB
**I've been getting PMs for clarification: I didn't do a single mod to my phone before this morning. Stock ATT/Moto Atrix, installed stock ATT/Moto OTA GB update yesterday. Following these steps I am now BLUL and rooted.**
So here are all the steps needed to get a stock, OTA Gingerbread Atrix Unlocked and rooted:
1. Follow Brief Mobile's BL unlock guide here.
Things I found out that you may like to know:
-You will need to complete all steps *even the ones the guide says to skip*.
-When you enter your device unlock code, it is case sensitive; use caps-lock.
-The most recent SBF flash is in the XDA IHOP pudding thread, use this instead of the older file linked to in the Brief Mobile guide.
-When you are done, reboot will take a *long* time; just stay calm.
Edit: After 30 min on the dual core screen with the "unlocked" in the corner I pulled the battery... after reboot everything seems fine.
2. Follow Brief Mobile's guide to root here.
Thanks to brief mobile, and to the xda folks who held my hand through this whole thing the first time

Help I keep getting fail boot 2

I'm new to rooting phones I have a Moto Photon 4G. Ido have root access but when i try to boot into Android Recovery i get a message saying fail boot 2 entering RSD mode. So I'm not able to flash any roms to my phone. It's getting frustrating I have used google to find a solution but I'm a NOOB haha so I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. Please can anyone help?
Have you unlocked it? Can't do much without unlocking and installing a custom recovery.
If not, start here.
I'm pretty sure it's unlocked but how can I be sure. I used Root check basic and it confirmed I do have root accsess.
Root and unlocking are two separate processes. When you boot the phone, if you're unlocked, it will say unlocked in the upper left on the screen with the red m.

Now click your start menu and type "cmd", right click the cmd program and copy it to your unlock pack directory.
i'm not sure how to copy it.
Open the newly copied cmd.exe and type "fastboot oem unlock xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" WITHOUT THE " " MARKS and replaces the x's with your code that you got from the above step.
The links were helpful but some are outdated or my comp says they contain malware and wont allow me to proceed any further and yes qbking77 has very helpful videos

Once the cmd.exe comes up in your start menu, right click it and choose "copy." Then open your unlock pack directory (where you unzipped the unlock pack zip file) and right click, then choose "paste." Then double click the pasted cmd.exe. I'm not sure what has you stuck exactly.

You need to unlock your phone and flash CWM in order to put a custom rom on it. Rooting it is he easy stuff. If you flash a custom rom 99.5% of the time it is pre rooted so...
I have tried that method with no success. Thanks for your help
You have to use RSD-lite to flash the stock phone rom back onto your phone before you can unlock it.
I did the same thing you did when I first tried to load a custom rom, and many other people here have done the same thing as well, we have all gotten through it. It took me about 5 hours of trying to get everything straightened out, and the next day I was running overclocked CM7 with jokers kernel.

[Q] **Noob Alert** Having problems rooting phone.

To the moderators: If I am 'that guy' that ruins the forum, then please delete my post and ban me from your website via what your mandatory video claims.
Objective(s): To find out what/if anything, I am doing wrong to "root" this phone. 2) What would be the easier method to root the phone?
Reason I am wanting to root: So I can remove the software that I will not use.
Steps I have taken:
I have tried looking at all of the steps and videos on this website but I am having issues with this one in particular. Getting HTC to Step 9 under the unlock Bootloader Ref 9A and 9b found here: It is on the HTC website, forum will not let me post link.
When I submit it to HTC, the popup claims that the sequence is not long enough. This is after I have copy/pasted following the pictures exactly.
I have even tried step 4 of Hasoon's software. It also informs me that the sequence is not long enough.
What am I wanting in a solution:
A layman's explanation on what I am doing wrong, how to fix said mistake, and possible correction to place me on the right path. I will provide any and all information requested, just assume I am a moron who is trying to learn.
Thank you for reading.

Now, if I unlock it using your "gunlock 3.5" and I am able to unlock the bootloader. Would I be able to root? If so, what method should I use? Again, I am a huge noobish moronic mouthbreather that is just dipping my toes into this world.
However, I am a lawyer by trade and if you are in Louisiana and ever need free legal counsel I would be more than glad to offer it

Successfully unlocked! Thank you!!!
Last question (I hope)
Is the phone rooted? If not, how do I safely do this?

Rooted it, it took a few times to do so. Thank you so much for your help and assistance. I have donated an amount that I hope is reflective of my gratitude.
Again, I apologize for the hand holding throughout this endeavor. I truly appreciate all of your help.
To Mods:
I would suggest that you place this as a thread called "HTC rooting for the True NOOB"

Question MetroTmo variant

So, am I correct in assuming I’m unable to do anything with this device until I can sim unlock? Seems that’s a requirement for boot loader unlock. I got one of these for cheap cheap because I need an android device with out gapps but I’m thinking that’s not going to work until it’s sim unlocked. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

A couple pages back there is a thread on how to oem unlock without sim unlock. It involves running a debloat script or using adb to get rid of one service. It goes through every step you need to do to unlock.

No problem, it takes almost exactly a week to the hour to get the code. Rest of the guide should be fairly easy to follow too. Just remember if you ever you the MSMTool to get back to stock it relocks your bootloader. You'll need to unlock it again by using the file OP sends you before flashing other nonstock firmwares again

Once you get the code, you can simply use my dummies guide to full rom backup, convert to US OEM (DE2117), and root and has the "oem unlock bypass" command in the guide.
