[Troubleshoot]My Galaxy S2 is draining battery very fast! - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello XDA,i bought my Samsung Galaxy S2,two months back, around end of november.Since then,i had a 1650 mAh battery and the XXLSJ JB leak.I thought it was normal to do that for a leaked firmware,so i switched to 4.0.4 (stock firmware, from england aka XEU).That didn't solve the problem either.I struggled for about 2 months, installing custom ROM's,Kernel's,verifying wakelocks on BBS,rooting,SetCPU,everything that i found out on google. My friends said it was the battery's fault.3 Days ago,i bought the 2000 mAh battery kit (wich comes with the 2000 mAh battery, and the expanded case).I've upgraded to 4.1.2 since it was released 7 days ago for Nordic Countries (NEE) and it still didn't fix it.A week ago,i've tried a market app called "Battery Calibration".It somewhat worked. Now,i'm on the 3rd reformat of the battery and it's still draining as before. What is happenning?May it be a hardware problem? It also gets hot on top, near the camera...

Maybe you have too many services running, maybe the reception in your area is poor, maybe you have wifi-bluetooth-gps constantly running, maybe your brighness is set the max and you play all day, maybe it's a hardware fault....
Post your battery screenshots will help alot. Post both screens plus display running time. BBS info will also help.

First of all.Everything i do,it's draining battery,wi-fi is always on when i'm at home.I chat very often when i'm at home on WhatsApp.Bluetooth and GPS is always off.Brightness is always set on Automatic and i don't play that often.I categorize my phone at about medium usage.
About BBS screenshots and Battery ones, look.
EDIT:
Right now,i'm using NeatROM Lite 4.3 with PhilZ Kernel.

That's your 2000 mAh battery?
Make it outta the box and claim warranty, go with the excuse that gets hot near the camera (which is scary) and tell them that you need a device that can hold at least 12 hours.

You don't get it.It always has been like that. The hot near the camera issue was present since 1650 mAh battery.Must say i bought the phone Second-Hand,no warranty,no nothing.

I think that ur battery is fake. Or you should restore our phone.

You need to nuke script so you can clean all previous ROMs leftovers.
60% chance it'll work.

It was on 2.3.5 when i bought it..I don't know if it had the same problem or not..My girlfriend has a Samsung SII and she gets a 1d life outta 1650 mAh battery.I don't get it why i get less since she has no Auto-Brightness and she constantly talks with me on Whatsapp and listens to music sometimes. She also plays games, and she still gets atleast 1d battery life.

I've heard this happening to phones after water damage
If both stock and extended batteries don't do it, plus the warm spot near the camera - I suspect it to be hardware fault.
Edit: try to sell it for parts (or...) and get another phone. This probably will require to chang the main PCB.

Never trust previous owners, they all been here at xda.
You GF gets a day out of it because she's a girl, girls always get a day.
Nuke it up, you should be looking at 2 days with 7 hours of screen.
Hell, I get 4,5 in a day and a 1/2.

Same problem, bro :/
Gosh, I have had this problem too as long as I have had my phone and I'm so tired of this constant charging
I haven't nuked my phone like Gastonw was suggesting but now that I know there's such a thing I probably will. I'll post my battery stats too if anyone knows what to do if the nuke doesn't work. I hope I and everybody else that has this problem finally gets the answer.
Edit: Also I'm running the samsung 4.1 update, rooted and as you can see I almost haven't used the phone today and still only got 11-12 hours of battery lifetime.

Well, I have been thinking of buying a new battery (either the stock 1650mAh or the 2000mAh) but when I was running the stock samsung 4.0.4 firmware the most battery draining process was ''google services'' or something like that so I thought there was a problem with the software and so I didn't buy a new battery. I checked was anyone else having the same problem and it seemed to be a common bug. Some people where experiencing it on 2.3 and some on 4.0 but i didn't found an answer. When I heard that the 4.1 update was out I wished that it would fix the battery draining and kinda it did because no more the ''google services'' was draining all the battery but now it's the screen (which I know it should be) but even know that the software seems to be all good, battery still drains just as fast so just buying a new battery might fix my problem... and it hopefully does.

Battery life comes with good settings.
I got lucky there, 5.4 hours is a good number. Today I'm at 33% looking at 3.5 hours screen time. If I keep my screen on from now on i'll get to 4.4 hrs for sure. Now...good screen time right? Well...I AM gonna have to CHARGE it TODAY!
The thing is to catch the drainer "in the act" with betterbatterystats and once you've done that, you're off the hook.
This is the "where's the charger era", we all need to embrace that, so when we suddenly get 2 days outta 'em we can brag & giggle.
The day will come...where we will be able to charge our devices in 15 minutes and battery will last a week.....

Please perform a factor reset. I was also having the same issue, a factory reset made everything normal.
tip - backup imp data like contacts, messages and everything from your internal memory.

heavy usage
as i see it, you are a heavy user.
also the 4.1.2 official roms have a media scanner issue. you can search xda for the fix, but it willl just shorten the wakeup time.
best to avoid heat from the battery/phone. if it's heating up, it's probably working hard.
also check your network signal, sometimes when the signal is weak, the phone does extra work to search for a signal.
follow the previous post.. try to install a new fresh rom. make sure to wipe everything.
turn off all animations for 4.1.2
check your widgets so that they won't refresh. set it to manual refresh.
good luck!

[Q] Its official. My Galaxy S2 is busted.:(

Hi guys just wanted to say my galaxy s2 is officially busted. Its still in working order do not get me wrong but something wrong with the hardware i think because i have flashed so many roms and stock roms to try and resolve the problem and i cant. My display is always sky high in battery usage and i cant get it down to save the life of it. Got everything on the lowest that is brightness settings and still nothing. Spoken to samsung and they say its not suppose to be like that and that display always high and as high as 60% is not right.
What can i do please cause i love the phone and it really pisses me off that it gets drained so bloody quickly? Shall i just sell it and get an HTC sensation instead or shall i send it to Samsung and be patient for ten days without my phone

Id say just wait for the new phone, the galaxy s II obliterates the Sensation. This coming from a person who's owned both devices.
About your display problem, sounds pretty weird never heard of an issue like that before.

What is your average display "Time on" on "Battery usage" when you're almost running out of battery?
How quickly does it drain? Don't you have warranty to get it replaced if it's actually faulty? I can't really decide if that's the case from your non-sense post.

My display is high as well with android Os in second most of the time and its normal, cause I use the phone a lot so obviously the screen will be high.
I get around 13-17 hours heavy usage so am happy I dont think its anything to do with rom flashing unless you get lower then 10 hours battery life
sorry i should of made it more clearer. Once i charge my handset as soon as i start using it you can see the percentage drop rapidily. i go into the battery usage and the display is at its highest and draining the battery. And that is with brightness to low settings. If i do not use the phone it can last me for a whole day and a half. But im to scared to use it for browsing and thats over wifi cause i know it will not last me to long...i know the handset is a battery drainer but come on the display should not be as high as it is..and with the warranty i have put the stock rom back so can they find out still that i had my handset rooted if i was to send it in

If you get two hours with screen on, than that's normal and not a hardware failure. Use white backgrounds as little as possible.
Apparently they could, I believe they some kind of count record of the amount of roms you have flashed and the only way to reset is by using a 'JIG' if you search the forums should be able to find more info on the 'JIG'

you might try some of the other forums about reseting it
Looks like SAMOLED+ consume most power on SGS2. I thought it's normal. Just know mine also having the same problem.
Sucks to be the guy who receives all these problems. I suggest, you just get a refund, as you should be ashamed of yourself if you sell a defective SGS2.
If you like the sensation, get it. It's also good, as I usually borrow it from my sister when we feel like exchanging phones for a few days. Sensation's default battery life is a little worse than the SGS2, as I only get 18hrs-1d 4hrs in the Sensation(still not rooted/default ROM) against the 1d - 1d 10hrs of the SGS2(Leomar ROM + Ninphe 2.2/undervolted).
My sister just got those chichitec 1900mAh batteries, and she said battery life on the Sensation improved(Only her word, as we have yet to exchange phones again this weekend). Now, all it needs is an undervolt + good ROM and the Sensation's battery should last a longer if not the same than the SGS2. Though you'll surely miss the SAmoled+ quality if you compare it with the SLCD of the Sensation, hope HTC improve on this department, they should have used IPS instead of SLCD.
A little tip if your getting the Sensation, is to thoroughly check its touchscreen sensitivity. My Sensation, is a little buggy sometimes, sense lagging/resetting + weird touch sensitivity. Though, I think it should be fix by flashing a good ROM + Kernel. Good Luck.

what is your display percentage and how can you manage to get so many hours out of it? any tips? i will be posting screen shots tomorrow for you guys to see what im talking about
If you have been using the phone the screen will always be #1 on the list, as its the part that needs the most power.
The phone will get about 6-8h of screen on time total before the battery is flat, but it will depends on mobile coverage (weak coverage will drain faster), if you are using heavy data, wifi usage (will be better than using mobile data on a weak signal or if you are pushing a lot of data round).
Generally radios will eat up the juice.
Also games will hurt.
You can use CPUspy to see what states the CPU is in, and if its going to deep sleep.
Also in settings > about phone > battery use, you want the awake and screen on lines to match up as much as you can.
(Music will keep the phone awake while the screen is off, and so will downloading stuff etc)

The truth is, that what you report as a problem, is not a problem, it is simply a fact. SAMOLED displays drain batteries like hell. Mine does exactly the same. Like you, I was starting to think that my unit was somewhat faulty, but soon fund out that it was not. In fact, the truth is that the galaxy s2, if left on with the acreen at normal brghtness, fully drains its battery in a matter of 5 hours or so. It is due mainly to the display draining something like 0.8 Watts, alone.
People saying they get almost 2 days use simply tell bullocks, because there's no way of actually using this phone and getting more than about 15 hours autonomy from its battery.

Samsung support/RMA process has worked very well for me. Third phone already. Maybe ask them to replace yours?
I'm still confused over there. You're just talking without making any sense at all. The only thing I've got from all this is that you're complaining about display being the highest on the battery drain list. That means nothing. Or not much at least. Those values need to give a total of 100%, so if you're using your phone, and display is the highest, your phone is working really good, and you don't have the AOS bug. Which means your device is not faulty, you just don't understand the battery statistics screen. Pardon me if I understood your problem wrong, but if I didn't, just carry on with your life, your phone has no problems at all. I get around 1.5 days with medium usage, and I think that's normal for a phone like this.

You are not being rude at all. I have flashed yesterday batistas new rom and using jeffrey speedfrey kernel and i have fully charged the phone and calibrated it as well. I am going to let it die down and recharge it again to the max and see how it goes after that as well. My point of this though is as below on the screenshot. The display is always in that percentage and that is what has me worried. I have checked on other posts and the most that they get is 35 to 50%. I have the lowest brightness settings and it still that high..That is why i am asking if there is something wrong with my phone. I am getting good battery life so far just with medium usage and having wifi on since i have charged it but the display is what worries me. If someone could help me with these pointers as well i would appreciate it:
Does underclocking with Setcpu help battery life even more?
And what do you guys think of the screenshot?
i know this sounds silly but how does someone close a thread once they opened it i have a few i want to close..
Thanks again to everyone for you help..
It has dropped to 76% after 10 hours and a couple hours of screen usage. I don't think that there is a problem.

Worst case of battery draining on galaxy s2?

My galaxy s2 has had battery issues the day i got it.I was getting around 6-7 hours then, thought it was some issue with firmware checked the battery usage and everything seemed fine expect for few times the android os seemed a little high , so i installed a custom rom , tried sensation and villianrom and a few others .Villianrom seemed to help battery a little but few days in and battery is again draining like fuel in a f1.So i decided its nothing about the firmware and all , maybe i have a bad phone or battery cause its draining like 1% every 2 -3 mins while browsing or doing anything as a matter of fact i get about 4-5 or at best 6.5 hours but thqts rare.I mostly use wi-fi so it definitely uses less battery than 3g . So now my question is ... As i have rooted my phone do i get
The warranty assets as my phone is like 4 months old.I know about unrooting but will that do the trick ?
And btw apart from battery issues , which seem like i have a unique case , my experience with the phone has been amazing this is definetely the best phone on market ;-)
Please respond....and also share your experiences with battery backup of s2 .....thankyou. cheers B-)
*i forgot to add that another thing that i have been noticing is the high battery usage by the display , it sometimes is as high as 80% even on low brightness to which i have found no cure...no matter what i try it lowers sometimes to about 30% or more and is back again to higher, this has furthered my doubt that i have a faulty piece. Pls comment.

I'd say 1% every 2-3 minutes sounds about right if you have screen fairly bright.
Did you do a back up before installing custom rom?
If so install original rom back, then I think you need a usb jig, which is available from ebay. This will reset your custom binary counter so the warranty peeps won't know you've flashed a custom rom at some time.
I'm quite new to this so hopefully someone else may reply and correct me if wrong.

Battery Life is terrible (atypical please read)

I got this phone Friday.
I didn't root it Saturday but it was in the back of my head. Before I rooted it, I noticed that the battery life was the worst I had ever seen. I read online that this is a bug in 2.3.6 (good job samsung).
It charged while I was watching some TV, so I rooted it and installed UnNamed. This knocked me down to about 50%. I finished off the battery playing games. Then charged it back to 100%. When it was roughly 58% it froze so I had to pull the battery. When I turned it back on, and the battery was magically at 29%. Which seemed odd to me, is it just inaccurate or how does that work?
The hell is wrong with this phone? Nothing gets to me more than bad battery life. If I can't get this resolved, i'll have to bring it back to AT&T and swap it out for something else.
no advice for you, but mine is going on ebay when the htc ics phone comes. I haven't tried them yet. oh, I'm importing all phones from now on, too.
I noticed the same thing with my samsung get the galaxy nexus has a great battery...

Most more than likely it's the wiring leading up to RAM processor, and, consequently, the flux capacitor, which is probably where your problem is. The flux capacitor is what regulates the battery input/output which can sometimes lead to poor battery life, disappearing battery percentages, and in certain cases where your last name is McFly - time travel.

You know what?
**** this phone, unrooting it, and bringing it back.
Im done.
I had the same problem returned and got a new one problem solved

I'm sorry you aren't enjoying your phone. I had some great app suggestions, but this sounds like hardware failure...

No sympathy here dude its a side effect of our fuel gauge

Search is your friend, this is a well documented situation. In short it's how li tech batteries work in combination with how our fuel gauge works. (it goes off of voltage vs counting mah, and there's voltage sag under high current draw, this equates to it showing lower than it is on reboots at low power)
Battery percentage artificially reports low when the device is rebooted on low battery. This is widely documented on these forums.
If you're returning the phone because of this one small minor glitch, good riddens.
Also, Unnamed 2.x is not immune to the BT-AMP bug that kills battery on UCKK6, since it's based off of UCKK6. This is why many reverted to Unnamed 1.x
And why did you post a new thread on this? There's a dedicated thread for UCKK6 battery issues.
You need to be patient dude. Use search and read through all the related posts in this forum. You can begin with flashing the rooted stock 2.3.4 with KH7.

Idk... I was pretty upset last night because of it. It sounded like hardware, you're saying it isn't?
I was tired, posted at like midnight
Sorry for the trouble.

It's a minor hardware glitch that happens only when you reboot your phone on low battery. Solution is:
1) Accept the weirdness of your battery rising after the glitch
2) Reboot when on charger if the battery is below 50-60%
3) Reboot at a higher level of battery
You didn't magically "lose" 30%+ of battery - that's impossible. You just had the estimate of charge level thrown way off.
As an example of what is possible - right now my typical drain is well below 1%/hour when the phone is sitting in good signal. In weak signal it's about 1%/hour.
Man I don't know what the deal is I'm on this thing gaming web surfing and other **** and I got my wife saying "Your always on your damn phone " and I get 18-20 hours per charge

I have the same problem
Is that a problem of battery hardware or the phone? IS this a common problem with all i777? because I havent seen lots of people complaining about this?
Thanks

It is, as I've said before, the one corner case where our fuel gauge fails. It's the small price we pay for NEVER having to worry about battery recalibration - it will always converge towards truth, the only problem being that high load after a reset (rebooting on low battery) will throw it off for a few hours.

[Q] Phone keeps shutting itself off, what to do?

Hello everyone,
for a month now my Samsung galaxy S2 has been randomly shutting itself off. It always happens with the same pattern:
The signal suddenly drops to non-exsitent, then nothing reacts and finally everything goes black.I can maximally use my phone for about 5min but it stays alive for the whole day if I don't touch it.
Also when I switch it on again after it shut itself off a lot of battery life is lost, e.g I have full battery -> it shuts itself off -> I only have 50%.
Do you have any ideas about what I could do?
I thought it might have been a problem with ICS and therefore updated to Jelly Bean but the problem persisted...
Thanks for your help!
Sounds like a power problem. Have you tried a new battery? Could be hardware as you have ruled out software.
I had a similar (not exactly the same) problem on a friends s2. It was on full stock, never been 'messed with'.
To fix that, I flashed NeatROM & a new modem. Now it gets a lot better signal, and doesn't freeze up. It may be a long shot but possibly worth a go.
First though, do what Andrew says :good:

I'm currently having very similar issues......I take the phone off charge at 100%, do a little web browsing or make a call / send a text......and then the phone freezes and becomes totally unresponsive....then finally shuts off.
I reboot the phone and the battery percentage shows anything from 2% to 50% remaining. It's NOT the software.....I've changed from stock to cm10 to cm10.1 and reflashed various nandroids without making a difference......
The ONLY thing that stops it happening is to swap out the stock battery for my spare (high capacity 2000mAh) battery....so for me, it's definitely battery related.....
I'm expecting a new one in the post any day now......

Doesn't sound like much fun Keith. Let us know how you go when it comes. It's sounding like a completely different problem to the one I fixed, although it had similar symptoms.

No....not much fun.....but I had this issue with my galaxy W too....so I'm kinda used to it....lol
With the W, I'd get to the stage where the phone would (just about) fully boot.....and then shut down....
Just had a look at the S2s battery and it seems to be swelling which is ANOTHER indication of a borked battery.......

Hope so for your sake! Replacing the battery is a heck of a lot easier than finding a magic fix for a SOD which seems to randomly occur.
A couple weeks back or so there was a guy who's battery connection was sketchy between the battery and contacts, is your connection ok?

replace the batery fixed this problem for me

Yeah...battery contacts are good....new battery arrived about an hour ago...it's being charged up (external charger) and then I'll see if the problems have gone......

Morning Keith. If you swapped out std batt for big boy battery and problem was sorted its gonna be the battery. @ op glad you sorted it
OP here. Swapping the battery did it for me!
(I didn't even notice that my old battery was swollen )
Thanks a lot!

Same problem here, waiting for the new battery to arrive so I can change and test...:fingers-crossed:

Screen flicker and device shutdown

Hi xda! So I've been having a problem for a couple of months with my SGSII and i have searched a lot but i haven't found a solution yet.
The problem is that battery behaves normally and has a normal drain rate, but when it reaches 40% more or less it drains massively and drops to 10 % (more or less, could be 11% or 9%. It is not something precise and accurate) and screen immediately starts to flicker, backlight as well, then the signal is lost and phone shuts down. After that i can not turn it on unless i charge it.
I have looked a lot and pretty much all of the forums recommended to buy a new battery. I bought another battery (original) and the problem still continued. I've also tried swapping batteries with a friend, but the problem still happened to me and not to him. Also I have tried a lot of Roms, I've tried going back to stock as well, but still nothing.
Currently I'm running Cyanogenmod 10.1 RC2 because it gives me the best battery life in those 60%.
I leave you an attachment of a screenshot. As you can see battery percent dropped a lot at the end, and i wasn't using it heavily.
Thank you in advance.
It is a hardware issue, I had the same problem (battery would drain below 10% though), sent it to Samsung, Motherboard and Charge Socket got replaced, I don't know which one was causing it because I had other issues like broken home button too.

May be there would be some hardware related problem. But why dont you give a try to to a wakelock detector app like betterbattery stats or wakelock detector? Atleast you will know which app is eating your battery or is it a hardware related problem.

Thank you for answering. Unfortunately I have already rooted my device hence voiding my warranty. Maybe i could have it fixed by some technician.

I have tried a lot of battery related apps. BBS is one if them. I haven't seen anything unsual. In fact I've also tried apps like greenify. However battery life in the first 60% of battery is actually good. After 40% comes the problem.
