Every developer will tell you in the instructions which recovery is needed to install their app or ROM.
ClockWorkMod is newer than xRecovery.

Yep, however many Xperia ROMs still need xRecovery to flash, so the best way is having them both installed

Hi if anyone has a solution to my question please dont hesitate to reply, my problem is that I tried to install a custom rom on a friends mimmi through xrecovery but the recovery keeps saying ''bad error rom not installed'' I have also succesfully unlocked bootloader and installed nAa 11 and tried to flash the rom but with no luck same error pops up i'm certain its not just a download error from the roms cause I use the same roms on my phone perfectly. I really wana get a custom rom on my friend's phone please any1 what could it be a bug or not? I can't flash anything not even a hotfix.

Have you tried redoownloading the zip file ? Just in case it is broken...
Otherwise, if you already flash nAa-11 kernel, you won't have any problems I think...

is your recovery tool xrecovery or cwm recovery. you'll be needing cwm based recovery but i believe it is included in the kernel. or you could have downloaded the wrong rom zipfile.

So I had this rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1876792) and i wanted to go back to my official rom. I went to CDW wiped out system, date, ect etc and I tried to restore my backup which I did with my CWM before I use the custom rom. Everything ok but when I reboot me device it shows the bootlogo of the custom firmware and not the sony and after that it goes black. How do I solve this? I searched but I didnt find anything
Please be more exact on what you wiped and formatted all. What kernel and cwm version are you using? Did you made the nand backup with the same cwm version?

And you flashed back stock (based) kernel?
When you flash .ftf rom using a flashtool, it flashes all official components (rom, kernel, baseband) by default. I apologize flashtool is a most useful method to go back at stock rom. What do you think?

Download flashtool. Download ftf of firmware u want to flash. Open flashtool and drop that downloaded ftf file in flashtool window. Then check no final verification. Click ok. Then follow instructions given by flashtool. Done. Simple as that.

And be careful with device drivers. Install it from a Flashtool folder to avoid a flashing problems.

One last thing, as I said in my first post before i go to jelly bean i made a back up using CWM(The backup was on official ICS 4.0.4 + rooted + BL open). If I want to go back at that backup the only thing i need to do is go to CWM, delete system, delete data, detete etc etc and I do the restore?

Yea. Cwm doesn't reatore kernel. Just the system, data dalvik etc.
You'll need an ics kernel like alliance or suave to boot into the restored backup.

Xrecovery is pretty old.. with an older kernel generally.. get another rom and kernel.. they'll most probably have cwm and a faster kernel. Try cyanogenmod based ROMs. The devs usually give kernels tweaked specifically for the ROM. And they hv cwm

I used Flashtool 0.9.9 and installed a standard GB 2.3.3 firmware build.
I then rooted the XPERIA X10i using Force ZergRush exploit.
Then I was able to installed the recovery methods of xRecovery OR CWM from Flashtool 0.9.9
I could then boot into CWM recovery mode.
I was just being curious George as I wondered if I could do it as I was trying (without success) to installed CM10 from my SDcard. (status7...another story)
I re-installed GB 2.3.3 and went back to xRecovery as that's what my backup data restores are written with.
So, maybe an option depending on requirements and environment.
I did, like right now, attempt to re-install CWM via Flashtool 0.9.9 with xRecovery active and even though it said it'd installed successfully, a reboot into recovery shows it was still xRecovery. So I would suggest, without further research that if xRecovery is installed it can't be over written with CWM via Flashtool 0.9.9 without first re-installed the firmware and starting from scratch.

Not true at all.. u just hv to use flashtool and select "boot into specific recovery" option. Both ur recoveries must be there. also, u need a cm10 specific kernel to install it.. u can't just use ur existing GB kernel with cwm recovery n expect cm10 to work..

Hello, i need some help.
The kernel i have been trying to use is: X10_4.1X_CMX10_bootmanager_v13 + v_14 and alot more, but i can't come in to the recovery after changing kernel. but with the "Stock" kernel in flashtool i can get into recovery. cwm and the other, but then i can't install the rom i want, i need to install the kernel above before i can install the rom. Sry for my bad english, but i hope u understand.
bump since i edited.

The problem is you are trying to install kernels that is not supported by your ROM.
Have you unlocked your bootloader? Check it using S1Tool

u can install any kernel by using d correct processs...
1) First root and unlock bootloader of ur device using flashtool.
if u dont have flashtool download from http://androxyde.github.io/
2) after that in flashtool folder (c:/flashtool) u ll have drivers install drivers for xperia u, fastboot and flashtool drivers (u need to tick mark in boxes for desired drivers).
3) Its always better to have backup, install CWM and take take nanandroid backup by entering CWM.
Moving on to the installation process
1) Copy the rom zip file to internal storage.
2) through flashtool enter fastboot mode and flash kernel that ispresent along with the rom zip..
3) after that enter CWM and install ZIp.
4) let the device boot properly....... and if prompted restart the device..
5) Download and copy the kernel of ur wish and den flash.
6) before flashing just wipe cache and dalvik cache.
7) incase if u face any bootloop enter CWM mode and go to advance menu and clear cache and dalvik cache.......
I suggest u to use JB rom by Devswift its d best rom available among so many.....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2284394
I have given the whole process as u said ur in stock if u already rooted and unlocked just follow installation processss..............
Happy Flashing.......
Press THANKS if i have helped....
And also THANK every one who helps u in this forum.............

Kernel with CWM (any version) ll be used no pblm wid dat...
If u have any pblm wid kernel given in d zip den.....
1) download a custom kernel with CWM recovery and install it by doing all wipes...
2) now open the rom zip and remove boot img or kernel elf what ever file it may be and repack the zip and installl zip
3) if u dont remove the kernel file from dat zip i ll nly will get installed during installing rom zip
And during installing custom kernel from zip file ur device may undergo bootloop(stuck at boot animation)....
Den dont panic just go to CWM recovery and wipe cache and dalvik and restart it ll start up normally.....
Hope:good: it helps....

There are no pre requisites for flashing a kernel.
Just flash a stock kernel for stock based roms and a CM kernel for CM based roms,
Also check if the rom you want to flash and kernel you intend to flash are based on the same firmware version for optimum performance....
