My doubts are as follows:
1) If for example, I am on a specific firmware. Now if there is a custom ROM based on a different firmware, will I have to root my phone on that firmware first or can I directly install that custom ROM?
2) This is not exactly a doubt, but sort of a complaint that why don't developers provide download links to previous versions of their ROMs? It would really help those who want to download specific versions of the ROM.

1)If you are already rooted you can install a custom rom via recovery and as always you should also factory reset the phone before installing a custom rom.
2)It really depends on the dev. Some devs have the download links of older roms, some not. If not, you can ask it on the roms thread.
Hope this answers your questions

Hi,
Currently, Im stuck with my new phone. Hehe. I dunno where to start. Can someone post a link where I can upgrade my os version from the original to the custom ones. And also, what is the most stable roms out there?
Many thanks! Hope someone would respond to my newbie questions. Thanks.

Hi, I'd recommend you start out by reading this guide here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1007244
First you need to root your device, then you need to install a custom recovery, before you can actually install a custom rom.
It's a learning process, if you've never done something similiar before, but nothing too hard
Both of the 2.3 roms are imo stable enough for daily use, so I'd recommend one of them. Which one you choose is mostly a personal preference.
The holy grail of guides can be found here

Good luck

Just wondering..
What ROMs are currently being developed here on XDA (both the original android & android ROMs sections) are flashable through ODIN? and is there a benefit to flashing through CWM?
Thanks heaps

flashing through odin you can flash stock roms from different regions and also litening pro...check the android development section and you will find the rom thread there. also if you are going to root do your homework first...
benefit of flashing through CWM is it makes life alot easier...ie flashing through your computer each time you want to put a new rom on your phone...all your answers are in the original development thread
Yeh..I've been using Lite'ning Rom (currently on v6.1) on my SGSII, but I wanna jump on android 2.3.5.
Any recommendations on ROMs that can be flashed via ODIN..and provides good battery life?
Stock 2.3.5 from Intratechs thread .
jje
Do stock like JJe suggested and then just enjoy the beauty of it...give yourself a week trying it out and in between read through the original dev forums about roms and how everything works...each rom thread has guides on installations and how they work...if you got more questions feel free to ask me

You can make any rom light by debloating it with ROMCleaner from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827817. For out of the box light rom`s see Android Development thread.

Hi. Thanks so much for the reply. I have a few questions. Pardon me if I ask some stupid questions.
1. I can remove any bloats regardless of the ROM I am running?
2. What are modems? What can I get if I flash CWM modems?
3. I usually see Odin and Mobile Odin but I don't know what they are for and how to use them.
If you are running any good ROM, then you can suggest me Thanks again.

1. ROMCleaner is for debloating any samsung based rom
2. See item 4 in my signature for CWM flashable modems, modems are for connecting with your provider, are location/country based.
3. Odin/Mobile Odin are used to flash stock firmware,.tar/.md5 file based modems and kernels, see item 3 in my signature how to use Odin.

Hey, why not check this thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1674286
It will inform you with every category and sub-categories about all the roms you may choose from to install. Perhaps, if you dig enough, you'll discover that variant, that fits exactly to your needs.
Hope it will help you feel on the right tracks.
Thanks for the reference. It is still pretty confusing. I need to know which stock rom would provide me proper instalation of the latest version of android.
Should I just download the latest international rom? Or should i be concerned with any specific characteristic/spec of my phone?

Ok, based on your signature , you are on an international version of the s3 i9300, so you can choose a stock/custom rom in 4.1.2.
Just read the first post of the link I ve just sent you, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26583587&postcount=1 , you will find all kind of samsung based roms to choose from. Just take your time and read. You ll find something for your phone, Android revolution , omega ,Wanamlite are really close to stock, but with tweaks. How about trying one of those three if you want something stock-like -and improved nonetheless?
Edit: And yes if you want to make it safe and easier, just install the latest image.

Q&A for [ROM] CM 10.1(Android 4.2) for Atrix
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [ROM] CM 10.1(Android 4.2) for Atrix. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
Kernel question
Hi there,
I am reading from some time threads and threads about the Atrix roms and kernels and since I am finding Android 2.3.4 (yes, still on GB) more and more limited in terms of supported apps I finally decided to make the big move.
I have chosen this ROM and I am currently making up my TODO list: I have the root, I will unlock the bootloader and then I will probably install CWM recovery and then switch the ROM.
I have just one question: I found a lot of threads and articles all around the web talking about how to switch ROM but not how to switch the kernel. Is that because each ROM comes with a bundled kernel and the procedure is the same for both?
It seems to be because I looked at the list of files and folders of one kernel I downloaded and it seems to be just a subset of the files in one of ROMs I downloaded...
P.S. Also, where can I find the Gapps? I found them in the website of CWM, is that ok?
I hope I am not wrong and I hope I will find some support if needed in the next days!
Many thanks

If you chose to switch ROMs to a non Moto ROM, then you will have to install CWM, there is no probably about it. As far as CWM goes, if you are going to go with AtrICS, CM9, CM10, CM10.1, or CM10.2, your best bet would be to go with the recovery from the link found in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1302423 seeing as it does cover all partitions and the previously listed ROMs do utilize the webtop partition. If you are going to go with CM11, best bet would be to follow Z's instructions in his thread
AtrICS, CM9, CM10, and CM10.1 have 2 main kernels that they have used, the 2.x kernel and the 3.1 kernel. the 2.x kernel is outdated, and only a handful of ppl still use those versions of the ROM. The 3.1 kernel is ROMs, its more like a kernel update rather than a switching. The link to the kernel updates is here https://www.dropbox.com/sh/npbgtozd4w0ahiv/VIA6JjSf4l and you simply just flash the kernel that corresponds with your ROM via CWM. CM11 kernel updates have come in each of the releases, along with the ones here for v3 https://www.dropbox.com/sh/1w47t4vofyiwveb/AAAyK69Lv3z3oSgGI4Qoh9nha?dl=0
I'm a little confused on where you are getting these Gapps from CWM's website. I've been on there many times including now and I see no mention of any Gapps. As far as Gapps go, you need to use the one that matches up with your ROM version.
