EVO 3D ghost touch repair? - HTC EVO 3D

Hi. I have a RELOCKED HTC EVO 3D with ghost touching, so warranty is voided. I want to repair it myself (repair at the service costs almost as a new phone). Now the question is: do I have to change the LCD, too? I found touchscreen and I think that's OK to replace and repair the ghosting effect, but I need some opinions. Thank you!

Your warranty is not gone! Unlock again and s-off with juopnutbear (wire trick),it is fairly easy, then after getting s-off, run the ruu, and run the flag to turn s-on. It will say locked, and there will be no traces of rooting.

I think it's to late for this...Oh man, I didn't knew that Now there's nothing I can do, but just to repair it myself.
So, anyone know what I need to change? Only touchscreen is enough (without LCD display) ?

That is what I also want to know. It started registering ghost touches about 8 months ago until today when they become so frequent to the faze that i cant use it anymore. Replacement of the digitizer is imminent. I saw this on ebay http://item.mobileweb.ebay.co.uk/viewitem?itemId=271089461688. What did the trick for you?

I'm sorry to hear that. I sold that phone a while ago, after sending it in service and got my warranty voided (was RELOCKED).
I had two phones, the one I sold and another one I still have. This second one manifested ghost touch recently, but now I knew how to make it LOCKED, so was no problem for the service to repair it. In one month I sent the phone to warrany twice. My screen was replaced first time, then the screen again + battery. Waiting for the 3rd time.
It's my first HTC phone and I'm so dissapointed...
Anyway, that digitizer won't work for you. Digitizer and display are glued together, so you'll need to find digitizer+display, which cost a lot more.

You don't need to change display, only touchscreen. Touchscreen is your problem. I changed one, my self.

I have not found any GSM service that want to change only digitizer. Even HTC authorized service told me that I have to buy digitizer + display + speaker (for the 1st phone with the voided warranty), saying that they are in one piece.
Anyway, thanks for the info

Change it at your home, not in Service, only touchscreen. It's working.

I don't need to change it now because the phone with the voided warranty is sold and the one I have now it's OK for service in terms of warranty They already changed the touchscreen+display twice and battery once. I think they lose money with this phone

SOLVED
I think I've got a solution for ghost touches...I'm going to post it tonight if everything runs smooth just to be sure it does indeed fix my ghost touches...stay tuned

Ok so after 24 hours of testing I got ghost touches only 2 times.anyway my phone used to have ghost touches every like 2 min...
Solution: search for "pimp my rom" in the market.(it requires root access btw)
After you install it go to tweaks->touch screen and display and set min. Velocity to 2500 and max velocity to 4500. For your phone the values may differ.so feel free to test other values till you get the best results. Also max events per sec should be at 60. After ur done just apply your settings.top left check Mark.
If this didn't work it could be a hardware issue.but for me it did the trick.I still get some ghost touches so they are not gone forever but its way better now.
Hope this helps peeps.

Sent from my PC36100 using xda app-developers app

Ghost touching is caused by a defective digitizer... They are not hard to replace... You just need a heatgun/blowdrier and mini screwdriver (comes with digitizer) and patience... I've replaced the digitizer on my girlfriend's Rezound and ghost touching went away 100%... Took about 30 minutes. Plenty of videos on YouTube showing how the process works. This isn't something to pay someone else to do, you can easily figure it out yourself. Just be careful with the digitizer. They're super thing and will break if you put too much pressure on them.

I found an small I little hair under mine screen

I just now found something that looks like an little hair under mine screen off mine HTC Evo 3D. Its first time I spotted it.
I almost don't see it and I also don't think this falls under warranty and maybe it will just go away after awhile. But I got no idea how it got there. Anyway I wouldn't want to send it away under warranty if it even falls under warranty.
Anyone else saw something like this with there Evo 3D? I just found out this doesn't seem to be to strange. I got it almost in the left corner. If the dust get under the screen then it should somehow also go down in some time.
Take it to sprint because I'd be annoyed as hell looking at it. I love my EVO but the one thing I hate is when I see a ****ing hair stuck between. The bezel, sometimes its hard to pull out. Maybe that's how it got inside your phone

Well mine was bought in Germany in MediaMarkt. Its been 13 days ago that I bought it and just now when I was sitting outside and it was clear I could spot it and now I will be able find it to. I could go back, but I really don't want to have it go for warranty, I doubt if they give me another one. Btw I'm running an custom rom with sense 3.5, if I go back should I not flash an stock rom?
But when screen is on then I can not see it.
Didn't you know...? Debris under the screen is an HTC exclusive design trademark.
Well I knew that between the chinks there will become dirt between, that I just now als got.
But there is nothing I can do against it. But the dirt between the chink above the HTC logo I just removed very careful by using and double edge blade as those blades are very tiny, so it fits between the chink and I was able to remove it without damage the phone. But that dirt was obvious from some food, but in future it will happen again anyway and now it was just an small part, if it was more then I wouldnt take the risk to remove it.
Mine HTC Desire HD had also had dirt in the chicks, but it didn't disturb me.
I read online many HTC's have this dust problem. I guess no phone brand is perfect, even Apple not. Anyway it will not really disturb me if its just an small one which I can't see. I can only see it if I focus on it.

That's a bummer
Yes I think i'm going go back to the mediamarkt in germany today.
So they can switch it for me. But I don't know if they will do that.
I think its unacceptable that there is an dust part under mine screen and its just two weeks old so I don't wanna wait on warranty and they should just give me a new one.
Its clearly visibible this dust part and is about 1mm long. I'm also going ask € 20 back, they lowered the price with € 20, so going get that back to. I will flash an stock rom on it. If I keep 3.5 on it they can see I'm using custom firmware. Anyway I'm going try to switch it for a new one and get that € 20 back.
If they don't wanna switch it then I got to live with it as turning it in for warranty is to much.

I went back to MediaMark germany and after a long talk they keep saying no we don't give you an new one and only thing they could do is send it to HTC.
And that I didnt want. So now either sell it or live with it. I can almost not see the dust.

Says the con artist who doesnt want to keep the phone due to dust and hair under the screen, but is selling it on as new.
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m
Dude i'm not selling it as new but as new state and that is an big difference. And no one off you knows if I tell the buyer or not. I already answered a question off someone on XDA who asked if this was the one with the little hair in it. Also I'm still awaiting answer from HTC I mailed them about this problem.
And I said yes and showed him a picture.
Btw is this an common issue with the Evo 3D about dust getting under the screen? I found about 4 to 6 threads about it on internet. I think I would like to keep the Evo 3D btw as I like the device and an HTC One X would cost € 270 more.
Not trolling, but that other thread was genuinely funny.

Blown Earpiece I think

I think my EarPiece is blown. Severe low volume suddenly.
BT and SpeakerPhone works fine.
I have restored a backup from a month ago and it still is very low.
Since it's otherwise perfect and older HBoot I think it would be better to repair myself.
Before I rip it apart is there anything else I can check?
Is there a possible corruption on the Radio Side that the Backup would not have restored.
Has anyone else done this repair?
Thanks

That's the old issue of people not happy with the "Working" Volume.
Volume was fine since I got it.
Suddenly it dropped like 90%. I read one post that it happened in the middle of a call for someone.

I didn't want to get a Refurb. Which is what you'll likely get. I've read too many horror stories on those.
The part is only $10.00 and it does not look too bad to change.
You only need to go up where he folds the motherboard back before he starts disconnecting screen.

Then do this.

I had mine go out and honestly as long as you pay attention to replace it with the tabs (you'll see) going the right direction, it couldn't be easier to replace. Good luck.

Agreed with this
Its fairly simple to replace the earpiece infact it just sits in a slot and once you put on the board for the front facing camera it makes contact with it. screw it down and your done.
Dont worry about pulling the mother board back, as long as you take out the ribbons connected to the side of it (i cant remember but think theres 4 or 3) pull the mother board back and disconnect the 2 ribbons and a black wire.
Good luck

Yep... this is the problem I have as well... and is the prime example of how HTC quality has been crap for years now. I had this problem in the OG EVO as well. This is another reason why I am making the switch to Samsung as soon as they drop the SGS3 on us.
I had this exact same problem 2 weeks ago. Tried all the software hacks in the book to no avail, it's almost definitely your hardware. Sprint told me I could bring it in and they would replace the part for $35 (I don't have a protection plan). They said it would take them about an hour. HTC said I could send it to them and one of two things would happen: They would crack it open, determine it wasn't my fault, fix it, and mail it back free of charge OR they would crack it open, determine that it WAS my fault and either send it back still broke for $35 (inspection fee) or send it back fixed for "$60+". Either way HTC would have my phone for 6-8 business days. In the end, I bought the part off ebay for $7 and did it myself. It's really not too bad as long as you're careful with the motherboard portion if the disassemble. My speaker works flawlessly now. Good luck!

My 5th Evo 3D.

Yesterday I had my 5th replacement ordered via the Sprint store. The first 4 had the digitizer go out. The last one stopped reading the SD card. It's getting to be a pain in the ass to have to reroot all these phones. I love my Evo 3D but this is ridiculous. Samsung makes crappy parts. I'm eligible for upgrade as I used to work for Sprint in Tech Support, until pretty recently. Then I realized how poorly I was being paid for the amount of expertise I brought to the table and left for a job thats twice as easy for a lot more pay. No phones they currently carry catches my eye. I want to check out the rumored LG Eclipse. I would leave Sprint but the Ex employee plan is pretty good. I might have too if they keep carrying crappy phones.
Whats the point of this post? Nothing. Just sitting here without a phone, again.
Well, not as bad as I thought. 20 minutes, a wire trick and I'm rooted w s-off. So much easier than trying to brick the phone with the power cord. Thanks guys.
Yeah s-off is cake once you get the hang of it.

I have my phone right now in for the 4th digitalizer replacement. So far 2 screen replacements and 1 device replacement. This time it looks like another device replacement all this in less than 1 year.
Sweep2Wake does not make the digitizer go out... Where did that even come from?
The Evo 3D's digitizer is just garbage. They have a REALLY high failure rate. I treated mine great and the digitizer just gradually started going south. I suspect my replacement is going to do the same.

So is it just a strip of the screen?
If you really really wanna be able to get it unlocked, Download the correct version of clockwork mod for our phone one that's not touch, has to use the volume rockers and fresh install the rom, Or as a matter of fact, Just boot into whatever recovery you have and clear data/factoryreset, that'll get rid of your lock pin
Hello from me too!
I have a strip on my touch screen that doesn't work. It's right where the Search button and Install on Play Store is and Clear on the Phone notifications, too.
It had the stock rom, I have replaced the screen with the digitizer when it fell down. It worked after that. I had to unscrew the phone one more time because my LCD was touching the screen and the phone had gone mad. After that, and a couple of days later, I noticed that the strip didn't work anymore. Today I finally flashed a new rom (King Cobra 3d) and nothing's changed so I figured it might be a hardware problem...
What's your opinion?
Thank you!

I've replaced my digitizer twice myself. I got a cheaper one the first time, and figure that's what I get for trying to go on the cheap. (I was out of warranty). Sorry to say it but it could be that again.

I think I'll buy a new one... I unscrewed it a while ago so I could see if sth had been misplaced or if the digitizer had scratches or sth like that.
I saw that the ribbon's top had been ripped off right where it bends on top of the LCD... Don't know if that's the problem...

The last one I got from Amazon is the one I'm using now (about a month old), and spent $20 US on it, which was NOT the cheapest of them. Not knowing the exchange rate right off hand, would venture to say the one you're speaking of is not a "cheap" one. So go for it. Just take your time replacing it and be careful with ALL the ribbon cables. Good luck!

If your warranty is void then I would check software issues first. Are you on stock or custom rom. Did you install any new apps just before it happened. It might be worth trying a factory reset to rule out software problems. Get multi touch tester from the market and see if it responds to touches.

at first I'm in stock rom, then after a month using i get some errors with the touch screen,it become slow and slightly unresponsive,so I decided to try custom rom with sense 5 and hope the problem will fix, everything seems fine touch screen is good but after few days using it my softkey not working, and the middle of the screen become unresponsive,I try to reinstall the custom rom but still not working,so I went back to stock using guide from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2402578 since I lost my backup files, after that problems still there, softkey still not working and the unresponsive problem still appear,I factory reset the phone many times but not help, but then I accidentally drop the phone from a half meter height table after that accident my softkey working back normally I can use it again like usually, only the unresponsive touch screen in the middle of the screen still appear..weird isn't it?
I test with multitouch tester and yes the middle screen touch has error,if I move my finger from the top to the bottom it will skip the middle screen like it's not touchable, another question, did one x+ detect only 2 fingers on multitouch?cause multitouch tester show that I have 2 touch only, just wondering
for the record my phone have a slightly screen flex at the left and right bottom corner only if I press that side too hard,I realize this and never press them too hard again,is that screen flexing that cause the screen become unresponsive?
It's also possible that it might be a bad connection. Why not remove the screen and check the connectors
