So after using it a few months... - AT&T LG Optimus G

I love how fast and fluid this phone is but after all these months I can't get used to the width and weight of this phone. It just always feels uncomfortable. Actually the sprint version feels much lighter and better. I hold my phone probably 10 hrs a day for doing work on so I may have much more of an issue than most people. But I abhor how at&t asked lg to make this phone this wide. Just ranting.

Get the LG Bluetooth headset. It's really comfortable and will keep your phone out of your hands and in your pocket or on the desk. I'm on my computer all the time so it really allows me to type and talk at the same time during presentations and such. I personally like the weight of the phone. Oh well.

I've had mine only a week. I like the feel of it but it's still awkward because of the width -- more in the area of pulling it out of my pocket than talking on it, which I don't spend a lot of time doing. If I talked on it a lot I'd probably prefer to use a headset. I'm getting used to the size and in fact my old phone (Samsung Eternity) now looks puny. I've resigned myself to the fact that these big screens are the trend. Where I once looked for the smallest phone I could find, that is too limiting nowadays.

I have to stand up to get the OG out of my front pants pocket, and I wear loose-fit jeans. So when I'm at work, I just lay it on my desk.
The phone is also pretty slippery on both sides. I would probably drop it once a day if not for my rubberized case.
My dad's iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch screen, and I think it fits better in the hand. The 640×960 res is pretty respectable too. But I just can't get into iOS, waiting for jailbreaks, proprietary connectors, etc.

The size is still something I'm getting use to. For me, the SGS3 felt way better to hold than the Optimus G does, but the specs and promise of development for the LGOG is whats making me keep the phone.

Crossing my fingers on the development, whether it be by the community or LG themselves. Thinking about picking this up over a Note II for myself and a GS3 for the lady in March for my upgrade.
It's a very powerful phone with a GREAT price, just depends on how the dev community makes use of it

Yes to me the s3 is the best when it comes to holding comfort. If the s3 had Optimus G specs it would be the long time keeper

I'm on the same boat as you guys. The LG OG (especially with my Otterbox-like case) is a pretty damn big phone. But considering the fact it's a Nexus 4 with a legit LTE modem and microSD slot, it's definitely future-proofed for a good, good while...

Completely Disappointed.

Because now it will be almost impossible to move to a smaller screen.
It's huge, sharp, bright, has wacom support, high contrast, and completely perfect. There's no going back....

It's gonna be hard to go to the inevitable sgs3. I plan on keeping my note throughout though, as a Wi-Fi tablet/ in car media center
I don't even have mine yet and I agree. I played with it for 15 minutes or so yesterday, and now I can't wait to upgrade from my Infuse. And the size is so perfect. I know that the Note will only be able to be replaced by its successor when Samsung releases it. I hope they continue the series, as I will be a Note user for life if they continue it. Hell, I could even go for a slightly larger screen if they manage to figure out edge to edge displays that will fit in a similar sized package. Samsung has nailed the future of mobile devices with this one. Completely secured my loyalty to them through the Captivate, Infuse, and soon the Note. I can't get over how awesome of a device it is, even though I don't have one to call my own yet.

Not just ICS.
I have dreams of full CM9 w/ the S Pen apps baked right in.
I didn't realize i had missed the AMOLED screen from the cappy until i came back to it with the Note.
My girlfriends atrix is impossible for me to use anymore since the screen is so dark and small. Only thing I'll ever miss is the notification LED

Optimus G2 tease?

I watched the LG CES 2013 trailer video thing on youtube, and general speculation is that the G2 will be announced with a 5.5" screen and bumped up specs from our precious G. What are your thoughts? Will it be a Note 2 competitor, or a G replacement? And how do you think it will affect our updates?

Sent from my LG-E970 using xda app-developers app
Powerwise yes, but the note has a far larger screen. A 5" + screen would make it a closer competitor. See LG intuition for where I'm coming from.

It's called competition. The Note phones have proven there is a market for phablets. I'm going to guess you're not studying economics or business.

Then I guess this will blow your mind: http://t.co/91c3vTNA
I believe with LG's newfound success regarding the G, a direct attack on the Note would be fantastic, as well as possibly a new tablet. The G2 would fulfill the phablet competition that currently hardly exists. The LG Intuition is too wide, but a form factor like our G with the larger screen would be fantastic. Add a pen display, as well as having quickmemo, and the Note has real competition. Considering LG Displays is suing over the Note 10.1 in Asia, this may indeed be their plans in a nutshell. As HTC slowly falls (sad but apparently true), it's time for Samsung to have a true competitor in the Android market. I would love to see Motorola to come out of the blue, but that seems doubtful to happen. LG has an opening, and I think they should take it. I've been a Samsung fan, and still somewhat am (the siii disappointed me), but I think nothing makes products better like competition. The iphone is competition of course, but there needs to be android competition, or devices will get progressively worse.

If it is actually 5.5 inches then I don't mind even if it is technically the successor to this phone. Only thing id like in this phone that the g2 has is the 1080p screen and the camera if its any better

... I'm not talking about tablets. If I was talking about screens in general, I would be complaining about laptops, desktops, and tv's as well. But I'm not. It's a personal opinion, and a personal opinion of a few others, that a phone doesn't exactly need a huge screen. To each his own if they prefer that size. Apple has a ridiculously tiny screen, so I'm not really sure why they were even brought up lol. Considering I'm a girl, I have naturally smaller hands and have no desire to hold a phone that I need to doublefist. And even some men agree, it's too much.
No reason to be so nasty, Butler. (;

Sorry, not trying to be nasty. Just trying to point out that just because you (and for that matter, I) have small hands doesn't mean that everyone does, or that there's only one size that the market wants (as Apple seems to believe). Everyone thought Sammy was crazy for putting the Note out there, but since it and its followup have been very successful, it's only natural that other OEMs want a piece of the action. I'd like the big screen (even if I did have to double fist it), but there's no way I'd be comfortable having that thing in my pocket, and I'll be damned if I'm wearing a holster for a phone.
I'll be honest, I can't reach the whole screen of the OG with one hand, but I don't care. I arrange my icons to be close to my thumb, and use two hands when I have to.
Didn't mean to offend.

Except not, haha. I guess I'm in luck with the whole small hands + long fingers thing (my grandma has always told me I have piano fingers). My only fears of extending my fingers is that it slips out of my hand and falls on the ground. I have a case, but I still use at least one hand to balance it. Can't get too ballsy with this phone.

Jumbo phones
I think that cell phones in history have taken a weird turn - started out like holding a brick to your face, then they got smaller and smaller, but now all the high end phones are jumbo phones.
Not much you can do when it's packing a quad core processor, etc.
Honestly I think my LGOG is the largest I'd go. SG3 maybe is easier to hold, but is taller. I really like iPhone 5 form factor, but screen too narrow.
I went to local ATTs and played with each until I was sure.
If you told me I would be using 4.7 inch back when I had my iPhone I wouldn't believe you

I can't go smaller now, but my jean's pockets are about maxed out with the OG. I'd go bigger, but I'd need jeans with deeper pockets, ha ha.
I had the Inspire for a long time and loved the size of the screen.
After I got the OG, I was like, Damn that's small..
This is pretty perfect. Other phones too massive for me.
As far as my normal everyday phone use goes, I'm maxed out with the OG. Honestly, it's mainly because I can't fit anything bigger in my pocket without worrying I'll snap it in half. I have and old Galaxy Tab that I love for watching movies, reading, etc when waiting in line somewhere. And a Xoom for certain situations at work

3.7..? Did you mean 4.7 at all?
If not, what phone do you have lol. And what made you come here if you're fine with it? :x
my nex7 fits in my pocket......
I moved from a Samsung Captivate to the LGOG. I "tolerate" the LGOG size for the features and better screen, though I prefer the Captivate for pocketability. I wouldn't go any bigger than the LGOG regardless of features.
I think its 4.7' for me. I don't see a reason for any bigger really. I have a tablet, a laptop, and a 55 inch TV so if I ever need a bigger screen, I have it.
Nexus One
The 3.7 inch screen on the Nexus One was personally my favorite size.
Optimus G is the biggest I'm willing to go. I can't see myself going any bigger.
Don't think I can handle anything bigger than the LGOG E970 due to arthritic fingers. This phone size is still comfortable even though I use 2 hands a lot. Love the screen size due to eyesight, etc. I have 7", 8.9", & 10" screen tablets for bigger screen needs.
With smartphones, started off with 4", then went to 4.3", then to this LG. No bigger for me.

I jumped from an iPhone 4 to our device and I still don't believe how comfortable I am with such a larger size. That said, I absolutely love it and wouldn't even trade for the Nexus 4 at this point!
To answer the original question, I'd say the largest I'd go is probably around 5 inches, maybe 5.5 if I had a chance to hold it before I bought it. I have huge hands, and so it's more a question of what will fit in my pocket!

I have to say 4.5". I love the LGOG but I think it is just a tad bit too big. Maybe I wouldn't notice it, if the back button wasn't so far away. But it's barely one-handable.

Pros: screen, best processor, micro SD slot, everything else I don't list as a con
Con: ..... I don't really consider these things bad at all but they are not the best. Battery is good for me. Camera takes good pictures for a smartphone. Its overheated like three times not really a big deal and I've had it since the beginning of December when I bought it for 200$
The combination of the amazing processor, plentiful ram, display( quality and size) , and the inclusion of a micro sd are its main points.

Well in my opinion it's the most underrated phone on the market. Fast, well designed very mild LG skin(I use Nova so that takes care of that for me) and a nice sleek design even though I have it cased up due to work.
This is the third LG phone I've owned and the best device by them by far. Although I liked the other two I owned. Coming from the HTC One X and I don't miss that phone at all, nice device but dev unfriendly and HTC just isn't my thimg with their horrible Sense junk.
Buy it for the price you won't regret it imo. The dev community is a nice solid group as well.

Well I personally haven't had the overheating issue and like I said I rock a case because of work. Then again even though I have overclocked ever other phone I've owned, I just don't see a need to with this phone. I've also noticed very few people with the issue. If it was an epidemic I'm sure I would have noticed more since I seem to practically live on XDA, lol. Between here and the Note 10.1, One X and Atrix HD forums.
What's annoying about the phone is that sometimes you cannot put the brightness all the way up. Also camera is not so hot. Great phone overall and happy i have it (first android phone). With decent use my phone lasts about 10-12 hours.
If you have a decent phone right now I would just be patient and see if you like any of the 5 inch 1080p phones coming out (and possibly Galaxy S4). The screen "should" be superior, we won't know until we see it in hand comparing but another thing would be that the new phones will have a bigger battery (optimus pro g if in the USA will have a 3300 battery). If you are fine rooting etc than this phone will be fine but if not maybe the newer phones would be best as it would come with Jelly Bean and more than likely come out with 1-2 more updates (just pure speculation on my part)...whereas this phone will prob get Jelly Bean and that is it- however JB or not this phone runs very smooth and quick on ICS.
If you decide on this phone you will definitely be happy with it, especially at 50 bucks! Hell the Optimus G for Sprint is buy one get one free!
I think one of the reasons this phone is so far under the radar is due to the Nexus 4 stealing it's thunder. The OG and N4 have all the same "guts" but the N4 gets all the press due to having "pure android" and being first in line for all OS updates. That is all well and good, but I couldn't stomach being restricted to 16GB (11 usable) of storage. Not when I can buy a 64GB microSD card for only $40 and store all my media that I like to have on hand. Don't trust the cloud...
The OG also has LTE. That's not important to me since I'm on a Straight Talk plan, but it is a nice bonus feature for most people.
So as long as you're comfortable waiting for the devs here to keep you on the latest and greatest software, this phone IMHO is better than the Nexus 4, which most reviewers are in love with.
Thanks for the great feedback everyone. I was indeed comparing this to the Nexus 4, but this has LTE and N4 does not. However, i was also debating whether or not i wanted to wait for the 5 inch 1080ps instead because well, I like a big screen.

My personal opinion is that the phones are getting too big. I played around with the Note and Note 2 to get a feel for the size, and I just didn't care for it. I need a phone. Not a phablet and that's what I see it turning into at that size.
I agree. Phones are getting way too large, the Note and Note 2 are way too large for my taste and hands for that matter. I have a Note 10.1 tablet and love it so why do I need a bigger phone? Just my opinion as I know phablet users who love it.

Only real complaints I have are the speaker volume (fixed with the Sony enhancement) and the camera isn't that great (which doesn't bother me too much).
Also, the lack of updates. It doesn't effect me since I'm a flashoholic and will flash ROMs anyway, but still... It's more the principle of the matter. LG sucks so much with the updating and this phone should have had JB upon release.
What ever, I want AOKP and CM anyway!

Yeah I do like larger phones. My brother has a Note 2, and upon playing with it I already know its the perfect size. However, I have yet to get the Note 2 because of its price and me being a fairly smaller guy, I'm afraid the Note 2 will be indeed too large for my skinny pockets. So I may take your (xda) word on this phone and purchase the Optimus G within the next week or so.

If it's the perfect size, yet could be too big for your pockets, you might want to get away from wearing skinny jeans...

Its definitely underrated. There isnt any major marketing of this phone, and to be honest people dont really trust LG because of the lack of support and updates. But they did a terrific job with the optimus g, every review that i read/watch praises this phone, how crazy fast it is. Now lg needs to support it and build some momentum to carry it over the optimus g pro.

Thinking about Getting DNA may 1st?

I love everything about this phone.. accept the battery size.. HTC must have made there device to work will with the small battery given along with it, they must have optimized it somehow. Is the battery life good.. I mostly text play a few games and web browse all on 4G.. I am curious to know how the battery holds out on this phone.. please let me know!
See the thread about loving battery life a few down. Lots of love for battery life
I dont know how I missed it.. thanks!
Joel battery life is pretty good with this phone. Something to consider is that you won't be able to unlock and root phones with ota which most of them now come with. Besides that it's a great phone screen breaks and scratches easily so get some protection if you so get it

I don't agree with what you said about the screen. Unless you tale a diamond ring to it or you live near a beach and get sand in your pocket it is hard to scratch it. And the only way to break it is to drop it on the front with no case.
I've had my phone for over 4 months and never have had a screen protector on it and it still looks the same as the day I got it.

I've dropped mine off a 15 foot stand... but it had an otterbox, so I guess that speaks for the durability of both the phone and the case.
As for battery life, I haven't had any gripes but I also have had to live purely off wifi for the last couple months till I get back to the states; So that could change my battery life when I'm constantly connected to a network.

I beg to differ. I dropped mine with nada on it on the pavement face down. yeah it was scary but the screen got a little scratched and the corner chipped a little. Thats it. It's a pretty solid phone!
Battery life on this phone is great. Lasts all day on pretty heavy use.
Thanks guys! I didnt want to get a S3 considering Im not sure when the S4 would be coming out.. on VZW. Plus I love the red and black.. But I love the specs on this phone.. I dont want to spend 200 on a GS3 with common specs ( as of most phones released ) or a Maxx HD when I can get this top end phone for the same price!
I had the Maxx HD and swapped it in for the DNA because the lag and redraws were hideous. I too was worried about the battery life but I'm 14 hours in and still at 45% today. Today is my first day with BatteryGuru post learning stage. I don't expect this type of battery life to hold up on a weekday, but I can go from the time I get up to the time I go to bed easily. I use mine mainly for Exchange, surfing, texting and calling. Don't do much in the way of games so I'm sure that helps.

Most online retailers offer the DNA for $50. Got mine a month ago from radioshack.com for that price.
i got mine and my sister's for 98$...they battery life is good unless you are a heavy user...then it drains fairly quickly...maybe after OTA has root, a kernel will help improve it
oh and, keep and eye out...if the HTC ONE's version comes out for Verizon, its better than DNA unless you want to save money for a little compromise.
I like this phone, I do agree that the One will be better, but no announcement of a verizon version..

In terms of build and look I like the DNA better. The one is the same size as this phone but with a smaller screen. I also prefer the 3 nav buttons at the bottom instead of 4 makes it look cooler imo. I hear the one has an aluminum casing finish while the DNA just had that nice black and red matte finish with ergonomics that fight right in your hand. The DNA is just sleeker in all aspects. But that camera in the one ifs what I wish this had along with sd card support.

sorry but i don't think they are the same size phones...i even double checked with a specs sheet. and i thought the HTC One had a 2 button nav?
and on that point i do like the 3 button layout but i don't find myself using the recents so much that i need a button dedicated to it...same with volume buttons haha
anyway you'll be happy with either one

I'm always jumping between apps so it's useful for me. I read the dimensions are practically identical except the smaller screen.. what about the volume buttons?

well if you use it then i guess a dedicate button is good
i was just saying i kinda hate how we have dedicated vol up and down buttons because i keep my phone on vibrate and i end up accidently turning it up or silent by accident...i hope i just like use them for stuff other than changing volume once root is out? i can't be the only guy who wants this haha..maybe use it as waking and locking device...anyway i digress... we can agree to have different opinion on HTC One vs HTC Dna
