[Q] How to brick your phone? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
I'm new in the custom rom scene. I tried to flash CM10.1 on my SGS2. First I wanted to wipe the data partition, then the device suddenly turned off. After that it wont boot anymore. I tried an USB-jig but no reaction. The phone was on Stock ICS 4.0.4 rooted with I think PhilZ-CWM6 3.81. The first time I brick my phone and then a fullbrick. Now my question is, what did I wrong? I want do that experience anymore in the future. And sorry for my bad English I'm from Switzerland.

Sorry mate, you've got the brickbug right there. Read here -

Well done, its not like there are HUNDREDS of threads on the 4.0.4 stock kernel brick bug. Moral of the story, READ THE STICKIES.

I think the guy deserves a "thanks" for the title.

Thanks for the "thanks" you got one back. And thanks for the answers. So we can say it's the fault of Samsung? :good:

How is it the fault of Samsung when this is a known issue ?
If you were an ordinary user with a stock phone, you did a wipe & the phone crapped itself, then it would be Samsung's fault. But when you begin 'messing' with your phone, fail to do your 'homework' (despite information re: this particular issue being plastered all over the place) & your bork your phone, that's your fault.

You are right. I have to inform me before I do something like that, but it's difficult there are so many threads and posts and my English is not the best. I will search for a thread (or app) were all traps are listed.

Blame it on Samsung as long as you are convinced that the only thing you did was to wipe on 4.0.4.
As long as it happens while on that kernel it really doesn't matter what you were trying to do.
Brick bug was spotted on august or september, samsung learnt about it right away and kept releasing flawed 4.0.4 kernel.

You can try this guide, I have no idea if it will work because I never tried it

You just need to be sure you actually have that brick bug.

Thanks for the tip but it doesn't work for me. I can't get into recovery- or download-mode. The device is full bricked. Now I need a new board.

I prefer stepping on it repeatedly and then stomping it

If u want to mess with rooting/flashing/etc u must to read, read and read, if u are not 100% shure how to do something use search/ask somewhere, i was reading xda for about 3-4+ months before i get my i9100 so now i know many things, now just waiting for samsung to release source codes and i9100 will be again powerful device
read, red, read and read!

Yes, it is a good English lesson too.

Connect the phone and goto device manager to see if theres any device detected. If not, then head to customer centre but rooting voids warranty but if you tip the guy maybe he'll work it over
---------- Post added at 08:04 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:58 AM ----------
I have heard that theres tool to flash partitions of devices back. Google it and you may find something but it still requires the device to be detected
---------- Post added at 08:11 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:04 AM ----------
Could it be a case that you were flashing the rom and simultaneously some circuit part just blew off and so its not your fault but again you can't claim warranty also

If I had bricked it I would cry so hardly ==" I will try more helpful with replies but its so hard to be helpful in this case

Just an observation...Rom updates

I've noticed a few devs updating their posts just to change the date, but not changing anything about the Rom itself. I find it slightly misleading to post the present (or future, in some cases) date on the post title, just to click on the post and find it's the same Rom I downloaded a couple of days ago with no update. I have actually started to ignore the posts in some cases. It's just a heads-up to devs that they may want to change this practice.
Overall, I'd like to thank ALL devs for the fantastic Roms, and because of them, I have acquired FlashRom Syndrome! Proud to be a sick puppy!!!
Which ones are doing that? I haven't seen this happen at all.
Same here, did not see any. Some have svn for updates, where they are updated nightly..possibly you are referring to them. For instance myn'n rom, update hourly...almost...

sometimes secondly or minutely lol
I understand SVN, as I use it to update Synergy and VR updates. This post date thing used to be a problem on the OG Evo forum, the post title would say the current date, but the Rom was last updated 1-2 weeks ago....again, no big deal, just an observation. I'm not going to single out a dev here, it's not about that. As I've stated in a few PM's so far, it must be OCD kicking in....

[Q] Soft Bricked phone!

I believe I may have a soft brick on my SGS II. I had updated my CM9 to the latest in the thread and started to have a few problems. I had my phone overheat and die on me one time and take forever to charge back up. It originally had a yellow triangle next to the battery. After several hours of charging it booted up and I was able to use my phone again. I had never had an issue with CM9 before this and since this day, I had many outstanding issues with it.
As of last night I have had a soft brick I am assuming. But it doesn't seem to be recoverable either. Which is insanely strange. I had flashed many stock firmware and firmware files in Odin but can't see to get the phone to boot bast the AT&T Rethink Possible screen. It's been sitting for two days like this and I can only get to this screen after I have flashed something in Download mode. (doesn't matter, as long as odin resets device I get here) tried repartitioning, flashing stock modem, flashing stock rom in the how to get your device ready to be replaced thread, flashed kernels, flash stock PARAM. and I have got nothing.
Anyway to tell if my phone is saveable? I have the download counter set back to 0 so if push comes to shove i can try to get a new phone from at&t on tuesday.
But i'd really like to see my phone get fixed, the experience is good. Hopefully we can figure this out. All I can get access to is Download mode so recovery is pretty much out of the question.
Any advice guys? Google has done me no good.
Flash a rooted, cwm kernel through Odin, reboot into recovery, flash a rom.
^ that method has never failed me.
Also, when using Odin, use the USB ports on the back of your computer!

Be careful, I have noticed that Odin acts like a ***** when you talk him about extended usb ports.
Reboot your pc, strange as it seems that can fix a lot of ODIN problems.

I am running ODIN on an x64 based laptop. it has worked flawlessly until now! I have a soft bricked I777 also so I'm watching this thread for any good stuff to try.
My odin freezes right at the beginning of the FACTORYFS.img push.
It just sits and sits and sits. Drains the battery also.
I'm gonna go try a CWM kernel to see if that will help. My issue I think is the partitions are screwed somehow.
I can't flash back to factory standard because I had JB on my I777 and the flashes are getting stopped up by the partitions.
thanks for the input ...
I never thought of flashing just a kernel! DUHHH...

So no the Kernal did NOT work. I cannot flash a ROM either as they are all .zips requiring me to have access to my phone. Obviously there is no solution at least on this site! All you people can do is criticize! Does that REALLY make you feel superior?
How about FIXING something? Give me some text I can use!

Trell959 you Biporch and ryude talking about the USB ports and odin being a ***** got me thinking about my computer.
Although I have used my x64 based laptop many times to communicate with my phone for some reason that was exactly what the issue was.
I spent about 15 hours trying to figure out what was wrong with my phones com when it was the USB ports was not 'CLEAN' enough.
I finally moved to my server and plugged into the Main USB ports on it. Low and Behold the First time I was flashing away like a Big Dog!

[Q] AT&T Firmware

Hey guys,
I am on the hunt for firmware that is AT&T branded. I have been using XDA for a while know how to navigate the forums and am well aware of the existing posts with links to this firmware. However all of the current links for this particular firmware are bad. Most of the links redirect me to a page that displays a government posting stating that the page is in violation of some law. The other links redirect to a spam website asking me to install some sort of download manager (iLivid) which I tried and didn't work at all. I have searched the entire web and other forums with no luck.
At this point I'm a little frustrated and exhausted. If there is anyone out there who can give me a direct link to download the file that would be awesome.
Thanks!

Hey thanks for trying dude. But I didn't see any AT&T branded roms. Also I am looking for X10a, not X10i. I guess I should have specified that in my initial post, sorry.
I bought my X10 from AT&T. I am considering using my insurance policy to replace my X10 since the micro-usb port isn't working well. So I wanted to flash their branded ROM incase they try to deny my claim since I have the generic X10a ROM. Also AT&T will buy back my X10 (though im sure i wont get much for it) if i choose to buy another phone from them.
I guess what I will try to do is directly contact the users who have posted the firmwares with bad links and see if they can't give me a working link or something.

No lock screen

Just a general question!
Over the past couple of days I have been using my S3 with the lock screen turned off.
It's really good as you get straight into the phone quickly and it makes the phone appear faster.
Is anyone else using their device with the lock screen off?
what's your point?
He wants to know if anybody else uses lockscree. Or not. Duh.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
The main reason for a lock screen is to prevent from calling someone without realising if it's in your pocket so you don't blow your cap plan. That is just one example of what can happen without a lock screen....

Every new thread you come and act like a jerk. This forum it's going downhill because of dicks like you. This is a place to meet fellow users and talk about various aspects of the I9300 and you totally ruin it for people here. So what if the thread it's a little off. We can turn it into a lively discussion while helping newbies out.
But all you're interested in is humiliating people while acting like the moderator's little pet while scaring everyone away. If I was a newbie today I would've never signed up because of that jerk. A little nerdy kid acting tough is so retarded. Grow up and get a girlfriend.

Open letter to Sony

I'm sorry to get off topic of the google play edition and all the greta things it's going to bring but you know what, **** you, Sony, where the hell is my flash??? This device is meant to be carried around, it's obviously meant to replace you're current phone as it is a phone, it's not a cheap device, costing as much (or more than at launch) as other high end phones and even cheaper ones don't skimp here. Where's the ****ing flash??
All of you who are about to give me **** about how great the sensor is, shut the hell up, you need a flash indoors. pictures look like **** if it's not well lit, and many, many, many people use it as flashlights and now it's a major inconvenience. Why did they do this??? How much did they save by not putting on a flash?? I don't love the battery life but I get it, they were keeping it as thin and light as possible for such a large phone, I would have preferred a little thicker with a decent battery but it's fine. could they really not fit a tiny little led light in there???
I'm sorry for being like this but i just saw an xperia z and z1 and it just pissed me off. Yes, I knew what I was getting when i got the phone, and it is a great phone but every time i take a picture indoors or need a flashlight the thought "**** you Sony" pops into my head.

i'm looking into buying this device and truly i have been absolutely baffled at how a company on a phone with better specs than everyone else included a screen protector on every phone and didn't even build in camera flash?
the screen protector bothers me more than anything that if i buy it i'm going to drive myself insane trying to take it off and cleaning it perfectly?! thats ****ing ridiculous.

I wish it had a flash and I wish in general that the camera was better. But like others have said I knew what I was buying so I don't regret the decision.
Camera sucks. Worse camera I have seen in my life. It is so bad I don't even know why Sony added the camera to begin with. However every review and every article I read said the camera is utter Crap so I knew what I was buying. If camera was key for me I would avoid this phone like the plague but having a bigger screen is more critical for me

Outside pics are pretty good to me, so is battery life. No flash sucks but hey, who the f*ck cares? Everything else about this phone is so bad a$$ it's worth it without question.

Wow.... Whats with all the hate??
Guys, I'm not saying that I wouldn't have bought it, this thing is a beast! I love it, AND I KNEW WHAT I WAS GETTING. I'm just mad that Sony would jip everyone like this. They made a beast of a phone, with a hefty price tag, what in god's name possessed them to leave out a flash???

LOL, I don't hate. It is a little weird. My logic is that they did it on purpose to weed out all the non die hards. Lol.

Sony is quite good at shooting itself in the foot.
Take the Z1, for example. One of the biggest sensors in a smartphone camera and they release it with unpolished camera software. Pics are nowhere as good as they're supposed to be! :-\ (And yes, I speak from experience)

I wish it had a flash and I wish in general that the camera was better. But like others have said I knew what I was buying so I don't regret the decision.

Yeah you don't have to say 'F**k Sony' if you have known about the device you've bought. It was your decision anyway to go here, so accept it as it is. If you receive it unexpectedly (like screen cracking with no reason) then please do an open letter. But in this case No point for complaining right now.
We all know that the camera sucks, but it's not that bad, it's decent for casual usage. No flash bugs me also but not that important, i can lit up the screen with Chrome white page and use it at night to lighten up the room.
you didn't know what you were buying? isn't that your fault?

I'm sorry to say that most of us knew what we where buying. I knew the camera would be crap. What you are doing is complaining that you bought a Ferrari that was to low for your height and without a cupholder...

No, it's like complaining that i bought a ferrari without an audio system. It's not absolutely integral and I knew what I was getting, Doesn't stop me from being pissed of at them for leaving out something very important for no reason.

but you should have thought if that 'audio system missing in Ferrari' is your top priority. if it was, you wouldnt have bought the ferrari in the first place... sorry, it all boils down to this... you should have known what you were getting into....

The flash nor the battery life doesn't bother me. What bothers me is it broke in less than a month.

it is your mistake, as what you are complaining is about a hardware compaonent, which has no solution.. if it was software, there would have been a solution

A/ I'm not sure Sony peruse these forums for open letters to them :silly:
B/ Only the "buyer" is at fault for their purchase decisions :silly:
C/ It's good to vent your frustrations sometimes, even if you've caused them yourself

LOL... yeah pretty much right.
The Ultra doesn't need a flash. seriously! Every image i have taken with a phone (even the Z1 and Nokia 41MP device) hasn't performed well at night using a flash. They just don't work well. I've never kept an image that ive taken using a flash. Even on my DSLR's..
So I'm fine without a flash.
Yes the 8MP camera should have been better, but it isnt. So hey.. all we can do is buy the QX10 and make a case that works...
Will the next alliteration of the Ultra have a better camera... god I hope so...

My sentiments as well... I sometime see something that I would like to snap and then think why bother its going to come out crap lol
Having said that I find the video recording quality pretty good outdoors in natural light.

agree with that, I was expecting awesomeness... but it was about the same visual difference as my old S4. dissapointing.

yep agree. video recording looks fine. infact I like the colour reproduction. sound could be better, however for a waterproof unit, thats not going to happen... so I'm fine with that.
