[Q] Stuck on Boot Screen after attempted Kernel Install - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hello all. I have had Shostock3 for a while now and read that if you use the Siyah Kernel with it then it is an awesome combo. Well I downloaded the kernel and went to install it through CWM and now I have a big problem. I chose to reboot and install the kernel and when I did I am now STUCK at the screen that says "Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i9100" with the yellow triangle. I have let it just sit and see what it does but it goes no where. WHAT DO I DO?!?!?! HELP! Thanks all!
Samsung Galaxy S II i777
Running Shostock3
WAS running with default kernel that comes with Shostock3
EDIT: It doesn't seem that I can get into the recovery mode either. I am trying the volume button + power button combination and having no luck....

Is the name of the file that I tried to put on. Should I try to get the one that you stated and put it on via download mode? Because it seems that I can get into download mode but that's about it. I can't get into recovery.

Hold power button plus volume up and volume down, keep it held in until you boot into recovery. Recovery won't just disappear, normally people just aren't holding them in long enough or are using the wrong button combo. Let us know if you get back up and running. Also make sure when installing the siyah kernel you're following the OP directions to the letter.

I can't get into recovery. I simply cant. I hold the buttons, correctly might I add, and then the logo appears, then goes away and I am left with nothing but a blank, black screen. The bottom buttons aren't even lit.

Possible hardware failure on your power button or one of your volume buttons I supposed. Have you tried flashing a siyah.tar file in odin to get a.different usable recovery?

If you could link me a Siyah kernel that is in a .tar format I would be appreciative.

Dude do as Phalanx says. Vol up+Vol down+ Power and even after the logo goes away dont release the buttons. Recovery will show up.

Either that or if you get adb up an running on your computer, hook up your phone via usb and type (this is for mac, may be slightly different for other os's):
adb root
adb reboot recovery
and voila! your phone boots up in recovery!

can't get past boot screen on siyah 5.0.1
I spent all the time I could thinking I had this but apparently I don't!
Have AT&T Samsung i777 running the latest stock 4.1.2 that I got from Kies.
Wanted to try my hand at custom roms.
Was able to root phone using flamaroot which gave me SU ability
Bought Mobile Odin pro, downloaded Siyah .tar file and put it on SD.
Flashed it with mobile Odin.
Because I'm an idiot, I was hoping to make a rom backup after flashing.
Now, it boots "Samsung" then the Siyah screen, then goes blank.
I can get into CWM recovery but without a backup rom to restore to I'm not sure what to do.
Also, can get into Download mode which reads:
ODIN MODE
Product Name: SGH-I777
Custom Binary Download: NO
Current Binary: Samsung Official
However, it reads downloading, but I do not believe there's anything to download and it's been like this for 20 minutes
ANY ideas on what I could or should do would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!
Kurt

Where did you get the Siyah 5.0.1 in tar format? It sounds like you tried to flash a kernel that is not compiled for your phone. You need a kernel that is compiled specifically for the SGH-I777.
If that is the case, then you should be able to recover by flashing a good kernel using Odin, if you can find a tar version, or just flash the 4.1.2 stock firmware with Odin, which you can get from the Download Repository or from sammobile.com/firmware or Samsung-updates.com.
But first, since you can get into recovery, try performing a wipe data/factory reset to see what happens.

Thank you so much for helping me! First of all, I used your post, "Odin3 One-click Downloaders for Stock and Stock + Root" and was able to follow those steps to get me back to 2.3 and then I connected back to Kies to get back to stock 4.1.2. SO, I am completely back where I started a week ago, but I have a phone that works thanks to you!!
To answer your question: because I was using Mobile Odin, it only recognized .tar files and I found one on Siyah's blog (gokhanmoral) which was categorized under "sgs2 kernel".
So I'm back to the start (actually did the unrooted one so I don't even have it rooted currently). However, with all the reading I've been doing on this forum, I can't shake the desire to use a custom rom. I know I'm very much a noob and probably should make myself happy with my phone, but I wanna give it another try. I understand with my following questions if I'm posting in the wrong area and cannot have my questions answered.
Here's where I'm stuck. I know I need to make a custom recovery (cwm or twrp I'm not totally sure) before flashing a custom kernel and then rom. But I just can't figure out how to do it. When I go into recovery (holding volume buttons and power), there is not option for "backup and restore". How can I get a backup of my current rom so I can start with the other stuff?
The order as I understand it:
1. root phone
2. install cwm or twrp in order to create a backup of current rom
3. flash a custom kernel
4. flash a custom rom (that is compatible with kernel)
Thanks so much again for all your help!!

OK, glad your're back to working. The Siyah kernel you flashed is for the GT-I9100, the international version of the Galaxy s2. As I said, you will need a kernel that is compiled specifically for the SGH-I777, so get your kernel from the I777 Android Development Forum.
Next, you can also use a straight zImage file with Mobile Odin. You don't have to have a tar. You can even download a ClockworkMod flashable zip file and use an archiving tool such a Win Zip or 7Zip to open it and extract the zImage from it. Then use that to flash through Mobile Odin.
You currently have the stock 3e Recovery, which does not have a backup facility, nor the ability to flash custom firmware (unless it is signed by Samsung.) So you need to install a custom kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery (or TWRP Recovery will also work.) By the way, those are just different developers versions of almost exactly the same recovery functions, so it doesn't really matter which you use.
For a kernel, go to this post in the development section and download the third of four which is titled "AJK v2.0.5 NO-SWAP Samsung." As I said above, extract the zImage from the zip and use that to flash in Mobile Odin.
Also on this phone, recovery and the kernel are not separate, they are one unit, so you install the kernel to get the custom recovery. Your steps 2 and 3 are incorrect. Remove step 2 entirely. Step 3 will install both the kernel and the custom recovery. In step 4, you can flash any custom firmware you want. They all come with an included kernel, so it doesn't matter what kernel you start with because after you flash you will have a different kernel anyway.
And finally, don't worry about backing up the stock firmware. If you mess up the flash, or soft brick the phone, you can just reinstall stock as you did before. After you have a custom firmware installed, and have your phone configured exactly the way you want it, then is the time to make a backup, because you can flash to a different custom firmware to try it out, and if you don't like it, you can restore your backup and be back to exactly where you were.

Wow, excellent information and I cannot thank you enough for taking the time to help me out. My last question hopefully, and I don't mean to try your patience but what is the best way, would you recommend, to root my phone? I did it with flamaroot previously but it was temporary? Thanks!
Kurt

I have no experience with 4.1.2 and framaroot since I'm running Shostock3. No one who has used that method has said anything about it not being a permanent root. Why do you think it's not permanent?
I think it will be fine. Anyway after you root you're going to install a custom kernel followed immediately by a custom firmware which will be rooted. So even if it wasn't permanent it wouldn't matter.

First off, this forum is not for your phone, it is for the SGH-I777 AT&T Galaxy SII, so we don't know the specifics of your phone.
Following the above procedure will put your phone into download mode, where you can flash the firmware you linked.
Since you say you don't know how to use it, I am going to post a complete set of instructions for using Odin that I wrote some time ago. Bear in mind that this is for the I777, and you will have to adjust some things to make it work for your phone. Refer to the flashing instructions in the thread you linked.
How to use stand-alone Odin3 to flash firmware:
Follow and recheck each of the following steps. Do them in order listed, as some steps are dependent on previous steps. Instructions are for Odin3 v1.85. It should work with any version of Odin, but some details, like color of items, may be different.
1.) Open Odin on the Windows Desktop.
2.) 3.) 4.) Put your phone into download mode.
5.) In Odin, you should get the yellow box under where it says ID:COM with the text 0:[COMx], and in the Message area, <ID:0/00x> Added!! where x is some number, usually 1-8.
6.) In Odin, make sure Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time are checked and all other items are not checked.
7.) Click on the PDA button. Browse to the tar file you want to install and select it so its path appears in the text edit box next to the button.
8.) Make sure the check box next to the PDA button is checked.
9.) Click the Start button.
10.) You should see the green progress bar advancing.
11.) When complete, you will get a PASS (or FAIL if unsuccessful).
If after the successful flash your phone does not boot into the firmware, then perform a hard reset. I don't know your phone, but normally you would boot into recovery and perform a wipe data/factory reset.

I had an issue trying other ways of always returning to blue recovery, so thought this would help those with the same issue.
Downloads:
Download Samsung drivers from HERE.
Download Odin (computer program) from HERE.
Download ClockworkMod Recovery from HERE. (place this file somewhere on your computer where you can easily locate it).
Download "update.zip" file from HERE. (place this file on the root of your sdcard...not within any folders).
Download "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file from HERE. (place this file on the root of your sdcard...not within any folders).
Instructions:
1. Install Samsung drivers on your computer.
2. Open Odin on your computer. (You may need to disable antivirus programs for this to work properly)
3. Power off your phone and remove the battery.
4. Plug the stock USB cord which came with your phone into a powered USB port on your computer (usually on the back of the CPU).
5. Press and hold the "volume down" button on your phone, and continue to hold it while plugging the USB cord into your phone. This will put your phone into download mode. You'll see a large yellow triangle on the screen of your phone. You will also see one of the small boxes in Odin turn yellow, as well as "Added" appearing in the message box.
6. Press the PDA button in Odin (NOT the PHONE button) and navigate to the cwr-all.tar file you downloaded earlier.
7. Press START. When this process has finished, you'll be notified in Odin (succeeded 1/failed 0) and your phone screen will go blank.
8. Unplug your phone and re-insert battery.
9. Press and hold BOTH volume buttons and the power button simultaneously. Hold all three until you see "SAMSUNG" appear. This will boot your phone into recovery. If your text is red, then you're already in ClockworkMod (CWM) Recovery and you can skip the rest of this step. If the recovery menu is blue, then you're in stock recovery. Use the volume rocker to navigate down to "apply sdcard:update.zip" and select using the "Home" softkey. This will take you to CWM Recovery (red text menu). If your phone does not boot into recovery here, just pull the battery or wait for it to boot up and then power it down and try this again. It may take a couple tries for you to get it right.
10. When you see the red text and "CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery 2.5.1x" at the top, use the volume rocker to navigate down to "Wipe data/factory reset." Press the power button to select, and then navigate to yes, and press the power button again to select. Do this 3 times.
11. Scroll down to "Wipe cache partition," use power button to select, and then highlight and select "Yes." Do this 3 times.
12. Scroll down to "advanced" and then select "Wipe dalvik cache." Scroll to "Yes," and use power button to select. Do this 3 times.
13. Press the "Menu" softkey to return to the previous menu in CWM Recovery.
14. Navigate down to "Install zip from sdcard." Highlight it and press the power button to select.
15. Navigate to "choose zip from sdcard" and select.
16. Navigate to the rooted "su-2.3.6.1.x.zip" file that you downloaded earlier, and select it. Scroll to "Yes," and use power button to select.
17. When you're advised of completion, press the "Menu" softkey to go back to the previous CWR screen, then highlight and select "reboot system now."
At this point your phone will reboot and you'll be rooted with fully bloated ED01 Froyo. Open up your app drawer. You should see an app called "SuperUser". If it's there, you're done! Now you can think about possibly moving on to a custom ROM and/or kernel.
Don't break your phone! It's not my prob if you do! Good Luck, This did work and I am going good!

The reason that people are getting back to stock recovery after flashing CWM is because stock recovery re-asserts itself if a custom kernel is not flashed. Whenever you Odin back to stock and flash CWM afterwards, you should ALWAYS flash a custom kernel in CWM before booting to the OS, otherwise the change in recovery won't keep.

This is important information. Unfortunately none of the HOWTO threads on installing CWM mention this in the instructions and it took me hours to even become aware that this was what was happening to me. I haven't yet figured out how to remedy the problem but at least I know what it is now. Strangely I don't think I had any problem getting CWM to stick after flashing EB01 a while back.
The original instructions on FF have been updated somewhat. Among other things the wiping steps seem to not be necessary for just getting root. Here's the link. About to try this but with CWM3.

Note: Keep in mind that once you Odin CWR to ED01, you MUST also flash a kernel, or rom containing a kernel to replace the stock one, or it will revert you.
I spent days working on this issue of reverting back to stock recovery. I can tell you SSJ is absolutely correct, it is all about the kernel. Anytime you flash a stock kernel, whether it be in an ODIN package or flashing a stock kernel or a ROM that includes a stock kernel in CWM, the stock kernel will revert you back to stock blue (2e) recovery. From my experience and speaking with others, this only happens on nonvoodoo because obviously there are no stock voodoo kernels, they are all custom. You can flash the current CWM and it will stick through flashing modems in ODIN, and themes, patches, and mods in CWM. But as soon as you flash a stock kernel, you have to reflash the current CWM. So follow SSJ's advice and immediately flash a custom kernel if you are running nonvoodoo. My apologies to the OP that this is off topic from the thread. Just wanted to share the info I learned from days of previous testing.

He seems to have added that in the ED01 thread in the last few hours but in most of the recent Clockwork threads they don't mention this which is surprising.

[Q] Flashing with Odin questions

OK, so my plan is to Flash my USA Galaxy Player 5.0 with Entropy's Kernel and Chip v1.5 ROM, and I think I've got the general idea down (first time at this, so this is still new and scary):
1) Backup data (Already done)
2) Factory Reset to clear out everything
3) Use Odin3 v1.7 to Flash Entropy's Kernel
4) Use Odin3 v1.7 to Flash Chip v1.5
5) Enjoy newly improved Galaxy Player, and begin the re-install process for all my apps.
The questions I have that I cant seem to get straight:
1) In the How To Flash with Odin/Heimdall tutorial, it says to use the .tar file for the ROM/Kernel. On Entropy's Kernel page, it has downloads for a .tar from back in January of this year, and a .zip from March. It looks like the march one is the latest updates, but how do I use them/install from a zip? I notice the instructions directly above the install, but as far as I can tell, there isn't a way to use CWM for the Galaxy Player. My Player is rooted, should I just go with the 'Any rooted device' instructions, using the .zip? Will that work for a first time?
2) Chip's instructions recommend re-installing the kernel again after flashing his mod. Has anyone found this advice helpful? If so, should I try using Odin to do it or the terminal emulator?
3) I want to re-install Swype and some of the default stuff after installing Chip v1.5, thus Addon Pack 1 is needed. Again, it says flash with CWM, and it's a zip file...
That's all I can think of right now. I know I'm being overcautious, and after the first time or two I won't think hardly anything of these details I'm asking for, but for right now I'd really appreciate any help I can get!
the only thing i used odin (make sure youre in download mode of course) for was to flash entropys .tar file (DD_01142012.tar) which now lets you have cwm recovery on your device. and then i rebooted put entropys DD_03052012.zip onto my sdcard, and i also put chip1.5-1-signed.zip onto sdcard in same spot. then i rebooted into cwm mode by powering off and then holding power and vol+ button together till u see first samsung screen then let go of power button but not vol+button, when u see cwm menu then u can let go. then i scrolled down to 'install zip from sdcard' and click on it and goto the DD_03052012 first and install that, once thats finished, then i installed chips rom, and did entropys kernel again (just in case he says) then just reboot from the cwm menu. dont forget to make nand backup after you have chip installed just in case, or even make a nand backup before chip installation, or both its up to u, i did both just cuz. :highfive:
So everything looked like it was going good, then I got into a boot loop right after I installed Chip v1.5. I'm trying to go through the instructions to fix that now, but before that everything was nice and easy. Thanks for your help!
Did u do a wipe data and clear caches before chip? If u haven't then do it now and reinstall everyhing

For those who might be reading this in the future, to clear the boot loop I used the instructions here, which got my Player back to factory settings (it was more of a hassle to download the recovery ROM than it was to actually restore the Player). I re-tried installing, got boot looped again, then went to CWM ->Advanced ->Clear Delvik Cache . I remembered seeing this in the other instructions, I just mistook it for deleting the normal cache/data. Once I deleted it things worked fine, and things are looking good so far!
Moral of the story: Installing custom ROMs is easier than you think, although there are some little things that might trip you up for a little bit.

Whipe everything and dalwick cashe also..and then wait ,first boot is always longer because its formating cashe.
But if you dont have cwm and you want to flash some kernel which is in boot.img format packed in zip (i had few situations like that when i could not enter cwm ) since SGP dont have fastboot mode only way to flash it is try Odin ,download samsung note 2 tools (find it on xda ,there is thread for that) and with that tool you can convert .img to Tar ,just before conversion you rename boot.img in to zImage ..after it creates tar you can flash it with odin normaly ( add in pit section)
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I'm fairly certain you flash .tar files with odin, and .zip files in clockworkmod recovery. If you need cwm, you can flash a custom kernel with it installed already through odin. Try terrasilent or steve's kernel if you have the 4.0, for the 5.0 I'm not sure.
flashing cm 10.1 with odin, can i and how
[can anyone answer this question for me, I have the vibrant t959 and my power button is dead. I can use my phone all works fine but what I cant do is flash rom with cw cause of the power button. is their a way to flash cm 10.1 with odin or other way that u don't need a power button?

[Q] Root S3 i9300 4.3 locked by carrier

First, sorry because this has been probably asked some times but I have read a lot and I'm still not 100% sure of what to do.
Objective: I want to root a Galaxy S3 i9300 locked by a carrier and android 4.3
Tried: I tried a method that involved to flash with odin the recovery Philz Touch 6.00.8 but after doing that when I go into recovery mode it doesn't show the install from zip option. So I suppose it means the phone still has the normal recovery and for that reason I'm not able to install supersu from recovery to root the device.
So I decided to do nothing else untill I'm sure which is the correct method to use.
I have read that maybe the CF-Auto-Root method is the one I should use but I want to be sure first. Can CF-Auto-Root method be used on a current 4.3 locked by carrier?
If not which would be the best method to root an S3 i9300 locked by carrier and already with android 4.3?
I would highly aprreciate too if you can tell me what is the best method to generate a full backup before starting to do anything on a not rooted device.
Thanks.

Wise man. But you won't find 'install from zip' in Download Mode, got to boot into recovery (vol+ instead of vol-, home & power of course).
If you followed your guide correctly you'll probably find your recovery there and can just go on. From recovery you do a full backup, then install custom ROM via zip install as intended. Don't need neccessarily root for custom roms on i9300.

Sorry that's an error on my question. I go into recovery correctly (no download mode) but it doesn't show install zip from sdcard. It only shows the normal options from stock recovery (reboot, apply update from adb and from external storage, wipe data, wipe cache and apply update from cache). I'm going to correct that in the question.
About why I want to root. I want to sim unlock the phone. It is not to install custom roms.
Regards.

I see. In this case use Chainfires CF-Auto-Root solution you linked to, that's a fine method. But make sure you read and understand it precisely and stick exactly to the the stated model numbers.
If you don't understand anything ask first, you may save your device from bricking.
If you root and intend to flash regulary I warmly recommend skips Unified Toolkit which I'm a huge fan of:

Not sure if the S3 does this, but some stock rom's overwrite custom recoveries when they boot (unless the recovery's had a chance to patch this). Had this problem with an S4. Flash Philz Touch. again, but this time untick 'Auto Reboot' in Odin. Then, after you're sure it's finished flashing (give it some time), turn off Odin, disconnect the USB cable and pull the battery. Put the battery back in, to get back into recovery hold the Volume up button, the home button and the power button until it vibrates, then release the home button and power button but keep holding the Volume up button until you get into Philz Touch. Then go into Advanced, and Power Off. Philz Touch will ask you if you want to root the phone before turning off (select yes). You should be able to get into Philz Touch whenever you want after this.

I had read about someone that did that to make it work.
So if I try this, I would like to ask this first.
Would it be ok if I try it with a more up-to-date Philz Touch Recovery? In the instructions I found they are using Philz Touch 6.00.8 version but it looks that now the current version for i9300 is 6.26.6 released on 2014-04-15 (link found on xda-developers i9xx Philz Touch thread). So is it ok if I flash this more recent version?
SuperSu version that is installed from recovery following instructions would be UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip. So am I right if I say it would be ok to use the more recent UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.94.zip? (link found on xda-developers SuperSu thread)
And they are using Odin v3.07. I suppose it is ok to use Odin v3.09? (For what I read even v1.85 should work).
Regards.

[Q] First attempt from 4.1.2 to KK = stuck at yellow triangle

Hello, as you guys have already figured out, I am new to rooting. In trying to use Odin to flash CWM into the S II, the phone will not boot after logo. Even when attempting to boot into recovery mode the phone just loops back to the logo. I think I messed up big time. Thanks for reading.
Your post tells us that you're trying to get a different recovery onto the device; it would be very helpful to know what you flashed.
Recovery on the i777 is packaged with the kernel, so you will gain a custom recovery by flashing an appropriate kernel. I don't think that the recovery can be installed separately on this device.
using desktop Odin to flash anything other than stock firmware will result in tripping the flash counter, and the phone will display the yellow triangle as the initial boot screen. Flashing custom firmware via desktop ODIN does NOT necessarily mean that the device won't boot, which leaves me wondering what you flashed.
What is your goal? It will be easier to direct you once we are properly aware of where you were, and what you are aiming to achieve.

Thanks for replying to my post. The first thing I flashed via Odin was the CWM KitKatcompatible tar file and that was when the problem started. Right now I'm trying to get the S II to boot past the logo.

Do you know what version of Android was running on the device before you flashed cwm?
My recommendation is to return to stock.
First, download the stock 4.1.2 Jellybean Full distribution, I777UCMD8 from the Download Repository. It's the next to last item near the bottom. The downloaded file is in seven-zip (.7z) format and you need to extract the contents using an archiving program. The resulting file, which will have a ...tar.md5 extension, is the file you will use in step 7 below. Also download Odin3 v1.85. There is a link near the top of the page in the Repository.
2.) Have the USB cable plugged into USB port on the computer, but *Not* plugged in to the phone.
3.) Shut the phone off.
4.) While holding down the vol+ & vol- keys, plug micro-usb plug into phone.
[...]
Once you have the phone up and running, Framaroot with the Aragorn exploit is the easiest way to root.

So it turns out that CWM worked for me. So I proceeded to install the 4.4 ROM haha silly me. Thanks for your help though!.

[Q] Can't Boot/Reboot into CWM Recovery

I want to put a new ROM on my phone but I'm having trouble booting/rebooting into CWM, not sure what I need to do to get it to work. Here are all the methods I've tried...
Using ROM Manager to install new ROM package:
Try to do ROM Installation, select packages and options I want
Press "Reboot and install" button
Phone starts to reboot
Samsung logo flashes once
CyanogenMod start screen comes up, boots into OS, not Recovery mode. Nothing was wiped, installed, or changed at all.
Using ROM Manager to reboot into recovery:
Go into ROM Manager, select "Reboot into Recovery"
Phone starts to reboot
Samsung logo flashes once
Samsung logo flashes twice
CyanogenMod start screen comes up, boots into OS, not Recovery mode.
Rebooting from Power menu on the phone:
Choose "Reboot," then "Recovery" from Power menu
Phone starts to reboot
Samsung logo flashes once
Samsung logo flashes again
CyanogenMod start screen comes up, boots into OS, not Recovery mode.
Power down, then hold Power + Vol Up + Vol Down:
Phone starts to reboot
Continue holding these 3 buttons
Samsung logo flashes once
Continue holding these 3 buttons
Samsung logo flashes twice
Let go of the buttons because it should now be booting into Recovery
Samsung logo flashes third time
CyanogenMod start screen comes up, boots into OS, not Recovery mode.
And here are my phone particulars:
Code:
[B]Recovery[/B]
ClockworkMod 6.0.1.0
[B]Kernel version[/B]
3.0.64-RB11-SHIFT-1.1
[B]CyanogenMod version[/B]
11-20140402-UNOFFICIAL-i777
Any ideas what I need to do to boot into Recovery?
I don't think Rom Manager is compatible with the SGH-I777. Do a Google search on mobile Odin and install the shift kernel again.
You can't use rom manager. There's a warning thread stickied at the top of this forum titled "[A] Rom Manager ******WARNING READ THIS BEFORE******."
The answer depends on which phone you have, SGH-I777 OR SGH-S959G (the straight talk version) for which see this thread.
State which phone you have, and we can give you additional guidance as needed.

The SGH-S959G has exactly the same hardware as the SGH-I777. The only difference is that the partition table is slightly different. Those who have that phone also use this forum. Since you have the SmartTalk icon in your profile, I thought there was some chance that you might have that instead of the I777.
On the SGH-I777, the recovery is compiled into the kernel, and therefore is loaded into the kernel partition with the kernel. There is not a recovery in the recovery partition, and that is why rom manager will not work with this phone, and in fact has caused some rather severe problems for some folks.
Since you currently have cyanogenmod, and can not boot into recovery, you will need to use desktop Odin with download mode to load a new firmware onto your phone. So your best route will be to flash the phone back to stock using desktop Odin, root with Framaroot using the Aragorn exploit, and then use Mobile Odin Pro, or Mobile Odin Lite to flash a custom kernel containing ClockworkMod recovery. Then you can flash whichever custom firmware you want.
You can find the stock firmware in the Download Repository, which is also linked in my signature. Flash the I777UCMD8 Stock Binaries (Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean) which is near the bottom of the page. Odin3 v1.85 is recommended for this phone, although any version of Odin should work. There is a link for it near the top of the page. Download mode is, while powered off, hold pwr and vol - while plugging the usb cable into the phone.
Then, after rooting and installing Mobile Odin, you should flash the AJK v4.9 No Swap kernel. Download the CWM flashable .zip file, open it in an archiving program such as 7zip, and extract the boot.img. You can not flash the zip file with mobile odin, so you will need to flash the boot.img, which Mobile Odin will recognize. However, since you are not flashing the support files for the kernel, if you boot into the stock jellybean system at this point, the buttons will not work. So, after flashing the kernel with Mobile Odin, you should boot directly into recovery, and flash the full AJK v4.9 zip file to get the buttons working with the stock firmware. Or you can flash the custom firmware of your choice at this point and skip the above step.

Ah, gotcha - thanks for clearing that up.
Thanks for these very clear instructions - I used them to successfully flash the UCMD8 binary from the Download Repository, and I'll be leaving that on for now as I'm not using this phone too much anymore. The only thing I also had to do was, after flashing the binary, boot into the stock recovery and do a factory reset + wipe cache from there, then restart. It worked flawlessly after that.
Thanks so much for your help, creepy!
