If not, why not? Go do it. I ask because it seems lately a ton of threads are getting dirtied up with people and issues with firmware..and one thing a lot of them have in common is S-On..so I ask, why?

This is what I first thought..but, anyone in a rom thread has at least HTC Dev unlocked and flashed a recovery via fastboot. No more skill is required to S-Off. I think folks might be afraid of bricking? So I guess that would also raise the question, of all the folks who have S-OFf, how many bricked in the attempt? I bet not many actually hard bricked with no fix.
It so doesn't take much skill to watch a YouTube video and follow along. But throw in the word Linux and most users will cower in fear lol
I'm s-off. I can tell you why most people who are s-on are(I see it over and over again on forums with people questioning obtaining s-off).....because of the list of official requirements for Dirty Racun/Lazy Panda. I know this because I just went through it 2 weeks ago. A lot of people are on Win 7 64 bit and do not want to go through the hassle of creating a boot disk/usb drive for 32 bit or Ubuntu. I myself tried the Ubuntu method but not having ever used that OS I could not figure out opening a terminal within a folder LOL. Luckily my work PC is Win 7 32 bit and I have free time during the day. Sure some people have gotten away with using Win 7 64-bit anyway, but when the creator of the program is telling you if you do that they won't offer any help, it's very off putting. Another weird requirement that snagged me by overlooking it while mid install is the SD card size. Luckily I had an old 2gb card nearby. If I did not I would probably not go out of my way to buy an sd card to just obtain s-off. So in essence having requirements that IMO are outdated compared to what A LOT of people are running these days is why. That said I truly appreciate the work put in for giving us the ability to flash radios.
I am S-OFF. I didn't think I could do it. It's my first android device ever, and I've never rooted. I am no expert when it comes to computers, but I am good at following directions and doing research. I didn't know a lick about linux till I got this device and started doing some research. I found a handy rooting guide online which took step by step from initial unlocking to S-Off using DiryRacun and BabyRacun. I followed it and didn't have one issue doing it. I even used Windows 7 64bit to do it, not 32bit as recommended
I will say that it requires careful reading and each step has to be followed patiently, but its quite doable.

I think maybe you hit the nail on the head in regards to the linux aspect. It's just my opinion that the headaches that can arise from being S-On can be far worse than the small effort to s-off. Even if you need to create a bootable Ubuntu CD and learn how to open a terminal in linux (ctrl, alt, T).
Open terminal - ctrl+alt+t
Enable temporary superuser permissions - sudo "account password" ex sudo reboot (press enter, type password)
List structure (directory) - ls
Change directory - cd /"folder or directory structure" ex. From home to desktop "cd Desktop" (same directory) ex. "cd /home/videos/TV show" (outside current directory)
Move up a level - cd ..
Fastboot and adb commands are run with ./ ex ./fastboot reboot
Pretty much all distributions have a terminal commands list packed into the help files these days. Some differ but they all perform the same functions.
Funny. I'm s-off. never used ubuntu before in my life. I was able to make a live CD and go s-off with NO PROBLEM. I was able to open a terminal and cd to the right directory. Untar works EXACTLY like unzip. I really don't see a problem for people that insist on rolling the dice and using win 7 64. it took me exactly 1 minute to make a bootable CD. again NO UBUNTU or LINUX experience prior to this at all. Stop fearing the Linux people.
I'm s-on and the reason I'm not s-off is because of the stupid 2-16gb sd card req.
I'm using a SanDisk 64gb so no.

This is exactly what I'm getting at. No offense to those that are S-on, but it's just so easy to S-off and it seems by the numbers more problems arise that are difficult to fix while S-On..more work even. Just to update firmware gotta relock, take an OTA, unlock, reroot, etc..instead of just flashing an update zip. Or Rom flashing requiring extra steps to write the kernel if the developer doesn't implement the script to do it for you. Just seems like time and effort wasted when an hour of time can take care of it.

I didn't have all my ducks in a line it's been a while so don't remember the exact cause there were suggested methods within the LP thread 3-4 posts that broke it down step by step I probably just missed one of the steps. Once unbricked I went to those posts and and made sure everything was working before trying again and it took about 3 minutes and bingo done

Hello everyone. I was looking at the rooting instructions like damnnn. Lots of steps. I remember when i had the og EVO or my vibrant I could root it and download a custom rom just using my phone. It was just put zip on root of SD card, apply zip, use that ROM changer app to download/apply custom ROM. Bam done. Is the 3D ever going to be that or no?

I didn't mean to say the rooting process is too much, its just not as simple as before.

I love the steps..Makes me feel like im actually rooting the phone..Thats just me though,I enjoy the process.
I'm not sure exactly what the exploit is that gets s-off so its hard to say if there will ever be a 1 click method or easier way.My guess is someone will make an easier way of doing it in the future.
Yea Rooting the vibrant 3g was very simple I used z4root it only takes 2mins.. One phone that took me the longest to root was Mytouch 4g because there's alot of steps to do.
It's about as close to one click as you can get with out being one click. all you need to do is run revolutionary and flash su. Even the old one clicks you still had to click to download then click to run, thats two clicks right there. Thats not counting the whole pluging your phone in. Personally I was impressed at how easy it was right away.
Maybe one day all you will need to do is put your 3vo under your pillow and the root fairy will come down and do it for you and leave a shiny quarter(not trying to be a prick here just funny)

I found it obscenely simple... Lol
My nook was a pain my nuts. The G1 was a ***** without the data Sim card, and the my touch 3g was almost as big of a pain. I'd root another Evo 3D in a heart beat. OG Evo was easier, but not by much.
My buddies fascinate is also a bit of a pain with versions of cwm having to match the rom, modem problems, and more.
E3D'ed... Booyah!
Well, i am not trying to be an asshole, but 1. I think we can't really complain about put a little bit of thinking to get what the devs put way more thinking and effort into. 2. It clearly states that it's a test beta release. maybe when it is actually finalized it will be easier to use.
No.. not too much at all.
I rooted a MyTouch Fender ... That was a process and a half. Required a Goldcard, flashing engineering hboot, flashing rom/kernel and then reflashing the retail hboot.
Hassle...
This.

To be honest with you....As much of a hassle as you think it is, learning how to use ADB and the neccessary commands from the computer is truly in your best interest. There very well may come a time when you need those very commands to recovery your phone from a bad flash or simple mistake. A lot of people use the simple root method, jump in head first and get into some serious trouble without having the neccessary knowledge to fix said problems. Just something to think about.
rooting the evo 3d was beyond easy.
i feel the evo 4g took more to root. i didnt even feel like i was rooting a phone flashed a few zips and i was done..
anyone saying its difficult or was to many steps will be the first to get bootlooped and wonder why.
Too much? I thought is was pretty simple. Click the bat file & let it go. Then type Y or N to install CWM. Then reboot into recovery & flash Su. Pretty damn easy. No need for ADB unless you want to flash Twerp & now they have a PCM files you just place on root of SD & reboot into Bootloader to flash. You must weren't around when the root & nand unlock first came out for the Hero & OG Evo. Now that got a little complicated. This is very simple.

This thread proves exactly why HTC should NOT release an unlocked bootloader to the masses!
I am by no means trying to flame on ya OP, but if you consider the root utility for the 3D difficult you should start reading some more or not even be rooting at all.
This utility makes the rooting process cake. If this seems difficult you need to read up on ADB etc. This is a lot easier than the original rooting processes for most phones if you go back a few years. Try rooting using all command prompt with 25 steps that you have to do manually.
I hope that this isn't taken the wrong way, but this is the reason that carriers frown upon rooting...Because people get themselves into something that they shouldn't and end up using insurance at an excessive rate because they brick phones.
Sorry for my rant, just wanted to give my .02

The worst was I bought a g1 off ebay about a year ago, It was completely up to date and the bastard left his security lock on! We have no tmobile service here so I had to do all kinds of crazy ADB commands just to get past the gmail sign in because of having no sim card(back then you couldn't turn on wifi until you got past that point). Plus the whole rooting it too. What I'll do just to have buttons for my emulators.

For the OP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196131
Haven't tried it myself but here's a method without using ADB.
I saw somewhere that perm root has been achieved, but it is not being released because it could be hard to fix if you screw up the system partition.
Heres the thing though...
Don't we have the recovery files that can reflash the shipping OS version?
Also seeing as how we do not have S=Off that means we can't screw up the hboot or really flash anything that is "unautorized".
That means we could fix any issues by reflashing the stock software right?
Or is the perm root not being released because the method is too difficult.
If that is the case, I understand not wanting a bunch of casual flashers/rooters attempting this, but there are those of us that can actually follow instructions well. Heck I even rooted my old Nexus One without using the official unlock command. It involved switching SD cards at just the right moment while running special scripts for ADB and other craziness.
Saw this today,

I think the other part of this issue is that he (Evil DevNull -- oops I said a bad word around here) is using an exploit in the sim card system. He said he burned up two cards doing this. Probably not a very safe method at this point along with the other potential problems.

It is assumed he has a Factory rooted device, or possibly that a glitch in the "Root Checker" program still shows it was rooted after a reboot when it really wasn't. Also, it seems rather shady that he's already asking for money:
Would it be greedy of me to ask for a $5 donation from 500 people?

Speaking of money...anyone willing to organize and spearhead donations to the developer or group that achieves s-off?
I know this was done on other phones where people pledged $x amount of money.

Pretty much. I wouldn't be asking anyone for a dime period let alone prior to providing a full disclosure of the methods used to obtain root status.
Just like everyone else....I'll believe it when I see it.
Blah... perm root S=On is good enough for me right now if it can happen.
I'll pitch in a few bucks for that... I'll throw a few more for S=Off.
First time since the G1 that I had a device before root was achieved. I wanted to take advantage of the penny sale at Verizon is why I picked it up now. I would have gotten a galaxy s 2 had Verizon offered one. Oh well, every HTC so far has been broken eventually. I hope we don't have to wait too long though.
There was already a donation thread started somewhere I believe. But Evil was the only verbal dev working on root/s-off and said he didn't want money.

This is dangerous. If something happens to /system you're screwed because without recovery it can't be..... well recovered.
There is already a temp root method that you can use to kill the bloat. Outside of that root doesn't really provide you with any other abilities except maybe to steal wifi tethering without subscribing.
Without s off you wont be able to overclock, flash custom Roms or alternate radios....so why do people think they need to have perm root without s-off?
There are plenty other things you can do with Root without S-Off.
THe EVO 3D with hboot 1.50 had the HTC Methosd which left u with an unlocked bootloader and S-On and Flashing kernels and such had to be done thru Fastboot Commands, Which was if the ROM had a Custom Kernel as a Default. A common theme I seem to see around here is those who want to S-Off but have the wrong OS. I'm not sure why this is a problem as the unlimited.io team lays out the linux option pretty clearly, but yet still many complain of having the wrong OS..So, here you go. I'll try to lay it out as simply as I can for those who maybe just don't understand.
This is the set up for building a bootable USB drive.
First off, go here and download the latest Ubuntu Desktop ISO image :
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/thank-you?release=latest&bits=32&distro=desktop&status=zeroc
Now download Universal USB installer from here :
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/downloads/Universal-USB-Installer/Universal-USB-Installer-1.9.2.4.exe
Ensure that your USB drive is Fat16/Fat32/NTFS formatted. The USB installer is very easy to use. Just select your ISO and your flashdrive and click install. It does all the work.
Once the drive is completed safely eject your flash drive and shut down your PC. You need to set your PC to boot from USB. This method might be different for you than it was for me. My laptop I tap F9 while booting. You will have to check into this for your particular machine.
Once you have the the USB booting you will be presented with a few options. Just pick Run Live (I think it's the first and default option). This will boot you into a fully fuctional Linux 32bit desktop. Just what you need to S-OFF! From here just go to the Unlimited site and follow their directions to the letter. Do all this and you should be S-Off in about an hours time.
If this is laid out somewhere else, Mods feel free to delete. If you found it to be helpful, hit the thanks. Be well fellow tweakers.
P.S. This makes no changes to your PC. Once done shut down, remove the pen drive, and boot normally to Windows.

This should be common sense for those used to Linux but I forgot and it took me a while to figure out:
Make sure you are running the Racun tools from a drive that is Linux-formatted (using ext3 or ext4 for example). Otherwise, you will not be able set the proper permissions and you may encounter errors like I did. * facepalm *
I just ran it through Windows 7 64 bit with no Linux...it was easy as pie.

That said, it is super easy to make a LiveCD. I have a LiveCD and have used it to boot in to Ubuntu multiple times. I just wanted to see how far along it would get. I was pleasantly surprised that it finished, and was using successful as well!! After one Evo LTE was a success, I ran it on the second one as well!

It's good to hear so many success stories using 64bit..with all the options out there I really can't see any reason for anyone in these forums to not S-off. The information and help is here.

I actually used Windows 8 Pro 64 Bit. Everything fine except for step 14. My device was not being recognized. I used Ubuntu (just for step 14) and bingo!
Live usb works but last I checked Unlimited did not support live usb so if you run into problems they will be very reluctant to help

Correct! The last time I checked as well, Team Unlimited does not support this method. I believe that it's due to your system's response speeds. When it's reading from a USB Stick/Drive it will be slower than when reading from a disc. I could be totally off base here, as this is just my own thoughts and I haven't heard Team Unlimited say. I'm simply relating my response to the reason 64bit isn't supported. People were saying that the Team just didn't want to take the time to test 64bit systems, which is completely incorrect!! The drivers needed to achieve s-off simply don't function properly on 64bit systems (and take longer to react, if I'm remembering this correctly).
***********
Disclaimer: Just because myself and others have been successful using 64bit does NOT mean that everyone, or anyone else for that matter, will have success using a 64bit system. If you are not comfortable with your phone messing up during the process and no one being willing to help/assist you then do NOT use Team Unlimited's tools on a 64bit system! Team Unlimited will not assist you if you're using a 64bit system (and yes, they WILL be able to tell). As long as you comply to their simple requests, if you need their help at any point (before, after, or during) use of their tools, then Team Unlimited will happily assist you on their IRC channel!
***********
I say this because I don't want anyone getting in to a situation with their phone where they get stuck, confused, or anything, and are not able to go directly to the developer of the tools for help! I really just want everyone to have a good experience with their Evo LTE and wish everyone good luck in everything/anything they do with their Evo LTE!! I remember my first Android experience, so I know what it's like to be new to Android and not fully understanding all of the terminology, how the operating system works, or what system pieces rely on what to function properly. While I had been unlocking and flashing WinMo phones for a while, Android is a different animal and could be a little overwhelming in the beginning. Plus, think of it like this - the more that people enjoy this phone then the more they will tell a friend, or someone will simply overhear them talking about it and become intrigued themselves. Thus, increasing Androids user base(and hopefully hurting Apple ) and maybe even improving HTC's profits!!

I didn't realize that USB was not supported. After checking the site again I noticed that it indeed mentions a live CD but doesn't talk about using USB. I'm going to ask a mod to remove or close this thread due to this coming to my attention. I don't want anyone having issues at my hands.

that CASUAL does not work. Oh wait, let me guess, I don't have the right (1 of how many different ones suggested) usb driver, right? And I'm not in ADB, right? And I haven't tried different cables, and ports, and CADI on its own, and zadig, and usbdeview, and pulling the battery when it stalls in download mode (when CASUAL was still recognizing the phone, now neither CASUAL nor ODIN connect to it)? Sorry for the sarcasm, but I'm incredibly frustrated here. How does "one click" turn into a week of trying and trying and trying, and not only not making progress, but seemingly moving backwards where now I can't even get programs to connect? Is there something less messy, contradictory (seriously, the dev thread says "stock anything" but when trying the battery pull and reboot it goes off on me: OMFG WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? I WARNED YOU! YOU NEED TO ROOT FIRST.) way to unlock? Or a more concise thread of troubleshooting CASUAL (And please, I don't need a link to the same dev thread I just referenced, again.)?
Well I guess the rest of us that followed Adam's thread and were easily unlocked and loading ROMs daily are magicians or something?
Try a different USB port and a different computer. I could not get it to work at all on one PC in Windows or Linux, but it worked first try as soon as I tried it on my laptop.
Yes you caught us it was all a huge conspiracy to get you to brick your phone. The hundreds of people that have said they used the program where all in on it.

Dude, you weren't supposed to tell him!
Honestly if you can't run casual at this point, you shouldn't be doing it at all. I say this because when a "real" problem comes up you won't be equipped to handle it. Then you really will be SOL.

BINGO!!
Yea maybe try a different computer. I tried my laptop multiple times and it didn't work but once I did it on my surface pro it worked right away
definitely having the same problem, my solution: going to reinstall Windows 7 and see if that fixes my problems. if that doesn't then I'll just install a Linux distro on my computer and install java and see if i can get it to run that way. if anything I'll try it on another laptop running Windows xp or another till i get this **** to work. it honestly can't be that hard to unlock the note 2. maybe I'll try to root first and then try to unlock.. idk but i have faith in Adam and the other devs who've helped him and tested for him. I'll get it to work or die trying, because Verizon deserves that middle finger, big time.
anyway good luck on your journey!

It's not fair to be pissed at people who make the tools. You root at your own risk. Every post and every user will tell you that.

If you go the Linux route, just be sure to update the lib files, as stated in the casual thread. Linux worked perfectly for me, and I am a complete noob at this stuff.

Yep ive been through this to and finnally got it to work on my moms laptop. Our desktop is the only one I can use odin on and my moms laptop is the only one I can use casual on. When I have some spare time (or feel like it lol) im gonna try loading up a fresh install on windows 7 on 1 of my spare hard drives and see what happens from there. But for now im not really woried about it, just gonna roll with the flow.

I feel your pain but hang in there and keep trying. It took me 3 days and several hours to find the right combination that finally worked. If you follow the dev thread for a few days, you'll see that most everyone having problems eventually gets it to work through a combination of trial and error and support from the devs.
If you haven't already, try the driver suggestions in the last several pages of the dev thread. This seems to be helping quite a few others. Another thing to try is running the Casual jar file from an admin command prompt instead of double clicking the file. This worked for me.
Ok, so please forgive me for this. I'm used to Samsung devices, and rooting/custom recovery is as simple as "Download this, flash through Odin, Easy as pie".
So I have my brother's P769. He had rooted it, but was unsure how to install CWM on it. Me, being completely ignorant of unlocking the bootloader, was able to get CWM on it and flash CM10.2. Which, of course, gave me the LG Security Error. Been stuck for many a day trying to get back to V20F_00. It doesn't help that there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY to install the omap4 drivers in Windows 8.1, and reserving USB devices to Virtualbox is a pain in the (insert desired graphical descriptor here:_______).
So, I am just trying to clarify the steps to get my brother the CyanogenMod he so desires.
From Stock:
Root device
Unlock Bootloader
Install CWM
Flash CM from CWM
Is this a correct assumption?

Welcome JP,getting a break from the Blaze. I've had this beast for a week and I'm ready to crush the phone. So far I've been able to root and remove T-Mobile bloatware.
I've tried to unlock the boot loader many times and no luck. I've read thru the guides and the result is the same.
I sitting patiently to see if the devs can solve the mystery of the bootloader. I can't wait for the day so I can leave the stock Rom. Hope all is well

I've had this phone almost a year. As far as the unlocking bootloader goes, it seems like some p769s just aren't unlockable, no matter what method used. Mine is one of those. It may never be able to be unlocked. Just throwing that out there.
THIS link will show you the most common way to unlock the bootloader. It has simple directions and even a video. The only problem is that it doesn't work on some devices, such as mine, so just be wary. And many people in the thread have managed to get results by modifying the instructions, but others have not had any luck.
Good luck! Hope yours works

That's the link I found, and thought "There's no way it's that complicated!"
HTC uses a dev key. I don't remember Moto's method, but it was simple. Samsung is ridiculously simple. Why is LG so complicated? This has only re-enforced my idea of "Never get an LG"

This is the worst phone, as far as modding goes, I've ever seen. I haven't experienced many devices, but geez. Heck, hacking a SGS2 i777 with a faulty USB board was easier than this, and I couldn't even access recovery without ADB commands (because it thought a USB cable was plugged in even when it wasn't, was going to download mode) and couldn't enable ADB (because it thought a cable was plugged). I had to use SQLite hacks to force ADB to enable.
However, I've never let anything stop me before. I'm a world-champion Googler, and so I will crack this will probably take me a while, but meh.
