Since there's no Q&A forum for this phone (yet), I'll try in here.
I've noticed this morning, when listening to my music through my earphones, that the volume tends to subtly fluctuate - perhaps slightly reducing the volume on the louder parts of songs.
I don't like this (it's not even at max volume either) - is there a way to stop it? I've looked in the music player's settings and also the sound settings for the phone itself, but no luck.
This is my first Samsung Andrdoid so if I'm missing something common to these, feel free to hit me with the noob stick
You've got the SGS II already?
You are probably in the wrong forum, mate.
Nope, he is not.
Some lucky dawgs got it through P4U.
I got it yesterday afternoon from Phones4U, although I think I've sorted this problem out now. I think it was related to the bass enhancement setting, because I disabled that and it's not doing it anymore (or it's no longer noticeable).

Big question how do you find the sound quality what headphones are you using? Thanks
Swyped from my Desire HD using XDA App
I'm using Soundmagic PL30's and the sound is great, although I did notice a bit of crappines when I had the bass enhancement on and turned it right up. Now I have it on Auto/Rock EQ with no effects - perfect for my needs.
I've yet to test the phone's speaker.
I don't have the phone and only played with android briefly before, but in theory, what you are describing is known as "normalizing", where the device tries to make the songs sound as even as possible. This results in capped louder parts and sometimes increased quieter parts. Is there any option like this in the equalizer?
May I say... Congratulation and I HATE YOU... J.K...
Post up some more details of what you DISLIKE of it so far

Actually PL30 are slightly bass heavy themselves and at best average if sgs2 sound is even somewhat like sgs. If u really want something better without breaking bank get brainwavz M1 or nuforce ne6 if you prefer boomier bass. This phone does deserve more than PL30.
PL30 respond very badly to presets on SGS1 as well.
Magically posted from thin air!
Aw, I only bought these a couple of weeks ago!
I'll bear your recommendations in mind though, thanks.
Actually, the earphones that came with it look better (not the awful standard things you usually get). I probably won't open them though.
Edit: no normalization option, Deathangel. It sounds ok now anyway

Really? The Yamaha DAC that was included can actually best the Wolfson 8994? I've been torn between the SGSII and the Sensation for quite a while now. This tips the scales in the GSII's favor.
P.S.- How does it compare to an SGS with the Supercurio Voodoo mod?
It's very close mate. I haven't done a proper comparison between them but I get a full range from Bass, mid and treble using PowerAMP to listen to music with the SGS II. I'd say it maybe slightly better than the SGS with Voodoo if I had to chose.

I'm not Hemorrhoidsnet, I just found this video on a Dutch blogging site.
This seems the best thread to ask...
I'm looking for the best earbuds I can get for £30 or less (preferably less of course) for the highest quality listening. I'm hoping to use the SGSII in place of my iTouch since it can play FLAC natively!
Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated!
Presently have a Galaxy Nexus & an S2. Both are fine phones in their own right but....
I don't think there all that good at audio reproduction..
I want to use my flac music files with kplisch earphones with Poweramp.
Can you recommend an andriod smartphone thats got excellent sound quality?
As the title says....I'm looking for a Smartphone for an Audiophile.

a HTC maybe? they have beats audio
Sensation, Sensation XE, One X, S, V...
You should install Equalizer on whatever phone you get. It has a system wide EQ that doesn't require root.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smartandroidapps.equalizer
I'm not really sure what Beats Audio does, I imagine its just an equalizer. I imagine the beats headphones are a total scam as they are made by Monster the same company that rips people off by selling them overpriced HDMI cables saying they are somehow better.
Rezound or One X

You do know Texas instruments bought burr brown a few years ago? On that note I prefer ti's sound chip over wolfson's slightly. The sound is cleaner and more balanced. The wolfson sounds great but has muddier bass.

I'm in the UK so it'd have to be a model that works over here.
I've heard that beats audio doesn't make that much difference & doesn't really improve the sound
Try the Sony Ericsson smart phones as they produce the best quality audio. Like Xperia, Walkman Live, etc...
Stay away from anything with beats. The headphones are overpriced rubbish (you have your own anyway) and the sowftware is just a glorified EQ which in my opinion is far to exaggerated and detracts from the sound quality. I'm not sure which phones have the best DAC chips but I bet it would be one of the Sony phones marketed for music playback. if you really wanted to figure it out you could go through each prospective phones spec sheets and compare the data.
Or you could do what I did and accept that phones arent very good at audio playback and get yourself a decent music player. i went and bought sansa clip which is so much better than my galaxy s2 at music playback

Moving to Q&A
Say NO to beats audio - it's overpriced and you get nothing special in terms of hardware. Almost every HTC's are SoC and are all the same with audio hardware.
I own HD2 and sound quality is very good, though far from superior. Some samsung's are good too, few motorola's have excellent audio quality.
I've always thought beats to be a gimmick.
Is there anyway of finding out what DAC is in a smart phone. I tried google but didn't get very far.
Whats the new HTX One X like for music with beats off of course.
Any other recommendation's would be cool.
Get the Galaxy S. Remember: only the original Galaxy S and its variants (captivate, vibrant, epic touch something). Its Wolfson DAC is awesome, it's even more powerful with Voodoo Sound. And with a decent audio player (like PowerAmp) = perfect.

SGS Plus also uses a Wolfson DAC like the original SGS, but not exactly the same one. Supercurio (Voodoo sound developer) said there will be no Voodoo Sound for the SGS+ because of that.
WOW. Do not listen to ANYTHING people say regarding Beats and HTC. It's just a terrible equalizer that bloats the bass, and shatters the mids and don't even ask about highs. To get straight to the point: no phone currently out is good source material. At all. You should get a portable amp, like say, the E7 or E17 and run with that. Beats is THE ABSOLUTE WORST thing you can go for right now.
That being said, I suppose the Galaxy S is best for your needs. I would hazard a guess that most Sony phone have decent source components in them as well.
Seriously can't believe people are recommending the One X or the Rezound. If it's just because Beats, that's silly. Has NOTHING to do with the quality of the source components. Beats Audio is a terrible program and nothing more (outside of the terrible earbuds and terrible cans)

Hey all!
Just wanted to share my opinion ...
I personally think after using S3 for about a Week now, that S3's Audio Quality "is far superior in Comparison to an iPhone or hTc Beats".
I've used these both.
Does someone else thinks the same, or is it my Love for S3 which makes me believe this ???

As per other SGS3 audio posts try reading them many say not loud enough .

You could give franco's kernel a try, he has boosted the volume significantly and it sounds great without impacting the audio quality.
Highly recommend it, and the bonus of better battery life too

Like I've said before, listen to a Nokia N95 speaker or headphones and you'll realise how poor S3 really is.

Yeah I have heard plenty SE and a few Motorola phones that put shame to Samsung phones.
Lets talk about SQ, DAC and anything related to thread title here:
Nokia is known to produce good sounding mobiles even in the old days... Since 920 bares same chipset that of HTC One-S (which is good enough), i expect 920 to be good also...

The DAC will be good my sister has the One S and it does sound good better than my One X so can only imagine with dolby and EQ this will sound just as awesome.
I just love the free music streaming I'm a music lover and that will be a pretty nifty service.
The more I look at WP8 the more I want one!

No good DAC, no sale.
Dunno if anyone has seen the 920 in person, although it is probably hard to judge this anyway on the showfloor. This has always been a priority on a top-rate handset for me: Speaker quality. I've been generally disappointed with smartphone speakers in general compared to my older candybar and even slider phones, since modern smartphones are so thin. Nokia is known for great speakers in their phones, at least back when I still followed Nokia a good 4-5 years ago, and their stereo speakers were little boomboxes. How good do you think the Lumia 920 will be in this area? Can anyone with a Lumia 900 or 800 comment? The best smartphone I've heard so far in the modern smartphone era has been the Galaxy Note. It has a great full sound and bass, for a phone that is. The smaller Samsung phones are quite far behind their big brother. The HTC One X was okay but I heard the older models had terrible speakers.
On another note, my closed thread is near the top of the page. Either xda is a terrible place to gauge windows phone and nokia activity or there is something seriously wrong with the buzz surrounding this phone, which all the blogs and tech sites would have you believe otherwise.
I dont think you can base the fact the one s has good audio down to the DAC in the dual core snapdragon S4 because quite frankly the sony xperia T sucks plain and simply it is horrid low volume and no bass.
Also I really wish nokia went android as I would have snapped this phone up have always loved nokia phones and their cameras/video and sound quality and battery life not to mention the the great multi tasking.
A note to all...
I see some troubling comments in this thread, but rather than address them directly, I'm just going to leave all of you with some thoughts to consider...
1) Moderators here do their best to serve the interests of all members as a group, we do not single anyone out to make things difficult for them.
2) If you have a problem with a moderating decision, send a PM to the moderator(s) explaining your views and thoughts. Griping about it publicly in a post is not going to solve anything and makes the situation worse.
3) All discussions on XDA, in both posts and PMs, are to take place in a respectful manner. No personal attacks are allowed. I see some language here that can be considered violations, but I'll allow some time for the members to edit their own posts before I do it myself.

The traffic in this forum is still relatively light, but that will undoubtedly change as the release date nears. Let's keep the discussions on topic.

Being a big fan of the sound on my Nokia N9 and iPhone (4/4s/5), the sound on the Lumia 920 is easily on-par.. I'm paring them with Shure SE535's ..
For those curious, I'm NOT a fan of the sound of the HTC One X or Lumia 800..
I'm a happy camper as I was ultra concerned about this.. Nokia did it right with the 920 on the audio quality front.. :good:

Agreed the sound quality on the 800 really isn't great despite the update the pushed out a while back. My N9 is way better so it's good to know the 920 is on par.
I still dont understand how the N9 takes better pictures and video despite having the same sensor as the 800. A lot of this stuff comes down to software so atleast nokia didnt screw that one up.
Anyone seen any hard stats on audio quality? Places I normally see them have not reviewed 920 yet.
Does anybody knows the audio chip of the international version?
you will have to wait some time before we figure this out

I have been in different stores trying the speakers, and I have to say they sound nice pretty nice and loud. I never buy phones with no dual speaker configuration, and for the first time Samsung is doing this, I have to say I'm pretty impressed. About the headphone jack, I wouldn't be able to say, but I think most of the phones are in the same level except for LG V line.

I think many of us would like that, but they didn't say anything about a special DAC, so I doubt they implemented something really special for audio.

Sigh. Wish they did. I love the v20 but the lack of updates on LGs part is just pitiful. Still on 7.0 with Dec security patch. Nice camera, Excellent audio output through the jack [what i care about].
Might as well buy a dedicated dac and the s9.
Edit: What would be a good DAC to buy?

Honestly, I don't care that much about if they use a specialized DAC or nor as long as it sounds decent. I was more worried about the speakers, but they sound really nice.
Usually I'm not much time with headphones, maybe 1-2 times per month, but everyday I see videos and I appreciate a lot the stereo speakers, which are really good.

Guess will have to wait for Dolby to be ported to the S8 before rooting.
Sounds quite good with the sound personalisation (test tones) all with "yes" - using AK T8ie mkII it sounds pretty credible.
Dolby Atmos is a major turn-off to me though
It does sound different to the Note 8 (both international versions), more authorative - so, definitely feels like an upgrade.
The audio chip in the S9+ is the same as in the S8 series.
Cirrus Logic CS47L93 Audio Codec.
