Just got home from the HTC One announcement event and thought I would share my observations.
First here is the HTC page for the new phone: http://bit.ly/12HHcc9 if you want to go check out the specs and things.
Having used the phone, I can tell you, I was not sure I could go back to a smaller device since I have a DNA and am very comfy with the size. However, it fit the hand very well, and was not so much different that it bothered me.
The main home screen now has "BlinkFeed", which if you ever used FlipBoard is very similar. You go in and tell it what information you are interested in and it assembles a mosaic of blurbs from your social media and news sources for you to glance at. When you see something you like, you can tap it to get details. It seems to scroll on and on forever.
I'm not sure how much I like this, it'll be one of those things you have to try out to see how it sits with you. I have been told it can be disabled for those who don't care for it. On top of this, you also get 4 regular style home screens for shortcuts and widgets.
Sense is very clean now. Everything has been minimalistically styled for sleek looks and a very sexy overall appearance. I was very happy with the way things looked and how they came together.
And for those of you worried about it, the original Sense WeatherClock is still in there.
It does have NFC, but they seem to have left out Android Beam. I was told at lunch that it should be back in by release day. We will see.
The camera is also an innovation. Something called "UltraPixel". They did not give tech specs, but having used it, I can tell you it is truly beautiful. They also paired it with something called "Zoe" which is hard to describe, but you will love it. It takes your stills and videos, creates a 30 second mashup, sets it to music, and you can watch it right there on the fly. Check out this vid AndroidPolice made at the event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A5WXhzoCCA to better understand.
The phone has stereo front speakers and sound enhancement called "BoomSound". This really delivers a rich, full stereo sound that I was (for the first time on a phone) actually impressed with. You don't realize how bad your phone's speaker is till you hear something good.
They have added TV Remote software, which I did not try, but if you lose your remote, it could come in handy.
And finally, it has Sense Voice, which is supposed to let you make and hear calls, no matter how loud or cluttered the background noises are around you. Since the demo phones did not have service, I was unable to test that as well.
So there it is. Overall, I would say there are several major steps forward by HTC in this phone. You should definitely check it out when it hits the stores.

Thanks for your input dsb. I would have loved to have gone, but due to where I live I had to settle for the live stream. I would have loved to demo it.

I wish I could have made it to the event, living in CT it's not too far of a trek, unfortunately it wasn't possible for me. Thanks for the review though - the camera definitely seems interesting. Less MP's but ultimately a higher quality rather than software process resolution bumps.
Hmm... I read on a few other sites that the Blinkyfeedy thing cannot be disabled. They also left off wireless charging. And it's coming to a bazillion carriers across the globe but not Verizon. Silliness.
Happy with my DNA.
I do appreciate the write up. Thanks man.
I've got to admit the homescreen reminds me a lot of windows phone 8.

Kind of interesting video. Shows how the phone is one solid piece of metal, cut for the components to fit inside.

Fair enough. I do agree it is a killer phone. Probably just my jealousy of it not coming to Big V. Lol...
Is the iOS style 'rubber band' scrolling effect back? Its there on blinkfeed, but is it in settings menus etc?

Good writeup Dsb.
Overal do you think Sense 5 is better than Sense 4.5?
There is a few things that I like about it, but I am happy with my DNA.

So I'm curious if the DNA will see this sense update and does anyone know if that zoe thing is just software out would it require certain hardware ?

I touched one once for like 3 minutes...it seems like it can't do anything. I like files...and downloading things and finding them in my download folder. I also didn't like all the squinting I had to do to see the screen.

Nice to hear your review, D. The size really concerned me because my DNA is borderline for me. I'd almost prefer a 4.7" 1080P screen. It seems *just* too wide for one hand typing while walking around holding a drink. I'll probably go check it out when they hit the stores, but I'm happy with my DNA and will likely stick with it.
is the carousel swiping of home screens still there because I saw a vid and it didn't look like it the carousel effect was still there but I could be wrong.
Is the DNA getting Sense 5? b/c that would be awesome and sense 5 prototype was spotted running on DNA? But prally not because VZW is a POS and needs a year+ to put on bloatware.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm so underwhelmed by the communit(ies) for the MoPho. Coming from a Pre, I'm used to a passionate and active community of near-fanatical phanboys waxing poetic on the delights/disasters of their phone. But there's so little excitement/action/enthusiasm around the MoPho. I'm really surprised. Personally, I'm happier with this phone than any other tech gadget I've used. Period. The signals are great - Phone, Wifi, GPS. The battery life is by far the best I've seen on a smartphone, there's no lag, the screen is easily seen in sunlight, the speaker is loud. Without root and just adding some widgets and a new launcher, this thing kicks A$$!
So why is it so dead in MoPholand? Where's the developer action? Am I the only one who loves this phone?
Maybe it's just the nature of the fragmented Android universe?
Or are people just ho-hum about the MoPho?
Or is everyone so happy that they're not spending time on forums b1tching about it?
C'mon mophos! Represent!
I don't frequent this board as much as some others as the Photon works so well with just the stock software and the few modifications posted in the DEV section. I am tired of trolling people that are talking about the SGS2 and I've got my theme how I like it (save for a few xml edits that I am too lazy to try and figure out).
There are two things that I would LIKE but I know will be harder for ME to figure out then its worth. Reboot options (have to edit android policy jar) and power control widgets in the pulldown bar (inb4 widget locker)
I totally see what you mean. However, I do remember when I first got my EVO it was a good 3-4 months before any activity started to pick up.
Honestly, I could care less. With my EVO I was looking forward to developments simply because ..... well there were many flaws with that phone.
The photon stock is sufficiently acceptable for me. Great battery, great speed, i really dont care about roms/kernels etc... All i care about is launchers, widgets and aps thats more than enough for me to customize
And with Android 4.0 coming out, anything I do to it now wont matter because I'll be one of the many curious people to upgrade
I say give it a couple of months at least until after the 4.0 comes out.
Two things I'm looking forward to: Android 4.0 and Nexus Prime.

Also, getting an unlocked boatloader with 4G (without having to jump through hoopes to make work) and other custom recoveries might help as well. It will happen...just very early for this device yet. In my opinion is moving along very nicely.

The Photon is such a kick ass phone all I really needed was root. Now if someone makes a cool and stable (or more stable) as the stock rom, that has a cool theme or offers me some neat functions I will flash it. Other then that WTF else do I need. If you are not happy with the phone or development then GTFO! Don't waste your time or ours *****ing.

Good to know things are likely to pick up over time. I'm glad to see everyone else generally very happy with the phone. There are some tweaks to do - but that's true of every phone. The MoPho has its issues down to things I'd call minor annoyances. It's got all the major issues covered. And they are totally on top of it with the updates. I think we will start getting big bonuses from the Googlerola combination.
I'll keep talking the phone up to everyone on my own.
This phone is so fantastic that I only need root. If some cool rims are developed with working 4g I will surely go that route, but for now I am fine with the way it is.

Things are still in the baby stages here and with the coming of the new Sammy phone I am sure a lot of people are undecided what they want to do. Once the line is drawn in the sand and folks make their decision on if they are staying with the mopho or going to Sammy things will pickup.

Yea, I agree. Fact is that the SGSII Epic Touch 4G is a killer phone and once released, this place will be almost a ghost town.

I disagree. This phone is very well done stock. But in comparison it has its weakness to other phones and when the sammy comes out more of those will be pointed out. But so will some of the places it shines. Give it time and the dust will settle. As of now there is no clear winner, but going either route you cant lose IMHO.

I would have to agree with everyone as well, has the pho even been out for a month yet?
I am very excited about the prospect of the unlocked bootloader w/4g as that is the only thing stopping me from going buck-nutty on this thing with new Roms. Motos have been hacked for so long im sure its only a matter of time before the flow of devs come back once the SGS2 hype dies down.
as for now all I need is root, since 4g is way too much fun to not have at the moment.

Exactly. I LOVE this phone Out OF The Box. Great/Amazing Battery Life. Stock ROM is fine with me. I finally feel I have NO need to put on another ROM. With Google Buying Moto Mobility, sky's the limit for our Super Phone. I can see it in Broad Daylight. I have the Sprint Hotspot on it (for Xoom, HP Touchpad, 3DS and Netflix) it works just Great with only 3G, 4G is Lighting Fast.
I am a happy customer. My wife liked it so much she gave our daughter her EVO Shift 4G and I got her a Photon. Everyone is Circle Jerking with the SGS2. Let them have it. When Sammy does not deliver (like usual) and we have Ice Cream before everyone else, they will be jealous of us and not the other way around. This is the BEST phone I have EVER had. I'm Rooted for My Backup Pro and Titanium Backup and that's it.

The display is very sharp but the Pentile effect is very obvious. It's like a dithering effect. Everything has this grainy effect to it. Charge your battery full and look at the battery meter. If you don't see a large green icon full of tiny black specks, you are in denial. You don't see a solid green icon, it's got that dithering effect. And so does everything else on the screen, but the screen is still sharp and vibrant.

Convenient that.
I call fake. The About screen strangely lists "Icecream Sandwich", but on every Android I've played with it would list the numerical designator (such as "2.3.4"). Things also appear more skinned than stock (I would hope Google has a bit better sense of graphic design than what I'm seeing there).

They wouldn't wipe it, they'd send out corporate security to buy the phone back and investigate the theft...
Wow. SO MUCH IMPROVEMENT. Real or not, widgets in the app drawer is nice. Also the home button feature is swagged out. I cant imagine CM8.

I'm on day #2 of playing with this new phone. So far I'm impressed with:
Camera and camcorder (OMG!!)
Sound (get some nice headphones! Without them it won't sound any different than a pos walkman.)
speed (Quadrant standard has it at the top "Your device ************************ " NICE!")
weight (it's so light!!)
Don't like:
Reading that it might not get Jelly Bean (deal breaker)
Compared to an iPhone, speed and utility are better but stylistically an ugly GUI. IOS still feels more solid to me.
need to find a battery pull solution--one of the main reasons that I didn't get an iPhone.
Don't want to have to root this phone to make it better.
I'd say that about covers it. I have 12 days left to see if I'm going to keep this phone or not as I bought through a special that Radio Shack's having. But yeah, the Jelly Bean thing is a real crusher if it's true. I've read many different opinions on this an nothing concrete. Does anyone have more information on this?
Also, does anyone know how to disable the Gmail app? In my other rooted phones I used to delete it and use Maildroid or the native Android email app--much better.
I really want to keep this phone, the camera's just amazing (for a phone). thoughts?
Thanks.

JB isn't a huge leap like gingerbread to ICS was, even if that were true (which I doubt) that shouldn't deter you from getting this phone.
You prefer the iPhone UI? All you do is scroll through pages of apps. We call that the app drawer. Haha, everything else may be new to you, so I'm guessing you may not be taking advantage of the FAR more interesting UI of Android 4.0. Learn more, and you'll love it.

Indeed the camera and camcorder are spiffy ^^
It will get jelly bean.
Honestly, if you like the iphone gui you can probably just install another launcher or rom like MIUI once/if it gets stable.
The battery pull thing isn't that bad, and if you need to replace the battery with a new one, it is possible but it's a really involved process.
Here's where I can't really comfort you. You will most likely have to root this phone in order to stay happy with it. I thought I didn't need to because the speed and everything was so amazing and overwhelming at first, but I did. I'm not sure how much the OTA helped, but for now I believe you will be forced to root in order to compensate for the devices flaws(Wifi/3g stability & multitasking mainly). Rooting can help alleviate some of this pain and make it a strong daily driver though.
Once you root, you won't notice a large performance boost, mainly because on today's phones and our phone specifically it's powerful enough to handle most tasks already. Battery life won't change much either(I get a fairly solid day easily). Although you'll get a lot more stability out of your phone strangely.

lol no official JB on the HTC EVO 4G LTE?? What kind of BS is that? whoever told you that is full of ish.
Yeah… LOL! I thought I'd get flamed for complimenting IOS's GUI.
We're an Apple family (iPhones, iPods, MBPro, Mac Mini) and I'm the only Android user. What I mean by GUI is Apple's approach to simplicity and user fluidity. Those are all things that I liked when I used MIUI on my first EVO. It's not that I like the screens of cloned icons--yeah, that's boring. I just like how smooth everything works on iPhones and iPods--you can't deny it, it's buttery smooth! When designing user interfaces, it's often the little things that matter and Apple really seems to pay attention to that. I don't see the point of widgets, I get what they are but I don't find them useful enough to keep, like MIUI. The PANDORA widget works sometimes and I have to go into the app to remind it to play! LOL.
I'm not bashing Anrdroid or the EVO--I bought another one that I'd really like to keep. But I also appreciate what other manufacturers do. The EVO 4G LTE has fluidity in some ways especially when using Chrome--wow!
I Googled "EVO 4G LTE jelly bean" and found a bunch of posts at other android websites where some users expressed the EVO LTE might now get JB, too many to post.
Ok, thanks all for your replies--and yeah, I'll probably be rooting this phone if I keep it (probably will) just like all the other Androids I've rooted.

Not sure how you can compare android to ios... I'd rather have my og evo than iPhone5... facepalm... evo lte will see jellybean soon, og evo will see jb...

Best phone
This phone kicks ass I left sgs2 and def not be looking for back I'm team evo 4g now
Amen to all that especially the ending haha

I have both now; evo lte and sIII. My impressions so far is that the build quality is vastly superior on the HTC. I also prefer the HTC screen, for its natural look and cleaner whites. The Samsung is much more responsive and virtually lag free. Either one is great.

Ok, thanks all for your replies--and yeah, I'll probably be rooting this phone if I keep it (probably will) just like all the other Androids I've rooted.

please link some of these. otherwise its nothing but hogwash. you actually think a FLAGSHIP PHONE thats less than 2 months old wont get JB? Thats just crazy talk.
i googled " evo 4g lte jelly bean" and im 4 pages in. nothing about the phone NOT getting JB. You may be misreading or misunderstanding that people are saying they dont think the phone will get it ''this year'' or the phone wont get it until ''spring of next year'' But nowhere have I see it say ''no jellybean for the htc evo 4g lte'' so i do beg of you to post some links.

I agree that it's crazy talk, but that's why I asked. I trust the opinions of the XDA community as its never let me down in the two years that I've been lurking and posting. I tried to find the one article that I read it on and now I can't find it. But that's ok... I believe the user may have been ranting about HTC+Sprint lagging on OTAs. Regardless, that's why I asked XDA.
LOL, it's looking less likely that I'm returning this device.
Well I've had the rezound since it came out and I always loved it. But it's a little outdated now and development has slowed quite a bit. So I'm thinking about getting a new phone.
I'm 99% sure I'm not gonna get the iPhone, even though I love my iPad and MacBook I think android is better than the iPhone.
The galaxy nexus is one of my top choices but I think they might be coming out with a new one soon and I would rather wait.
The s3 is my top choice as of now.
I don't see any reason to get the d inc lte.
I'm looking for battery life that is better than my rezound. I would like a decent screen but it's not that important. Most importantly I want the phone to be smooth and fast. And I would love something that is getting jb.
So what do you think? Keep the rezound or get another phone? Any suggestions other than what I listed?
Thanks!

Honestly i would wait for the next nexus device and cross my fingers its made buy htc lol. I love sense and all but i really like the fact that a nexus is made exactly for that version of android at the time and is still in mind when they make a new os. Like the nexus s came with gingerbread, then ics, and will soon get jellybean i here. I mean 3 os updates and it runs even better than when it came out with gb, unlike many other phones (not the rezound) when they get a os update they start to usually slow down because its not made with that os in mine. But thats just me lol
Thanks! I think I'm gonna stick with my rezound for now. If the one x comes to Verizon I'll get that
Unfortunately they've already said Sammy's making the next Nexus.
Actually I guess that's not official... Just based on a leaked Samsung spec sheet.

I've fought tooth and nail defending this phone for its outstanding hardware, but I'm starting to think it may be time to throw in the towel. The radios have amazing signal compared to Samsung. Problem? My strong as hell 4G signal stalls constantly. It never drops, just stalls all communications. I was so happy to see data stalls listed as fixed on this new ruu leak, but its completely untrue. No change. Not to mention the kernel drama. Still runs hot as hell. My respect for HTC has gone straight out the window this time. Not even aosp can redeem it for me now. So in short, I'm ready for a New phone as well and tell you go for it.

I bought a new iPhone for my sister a few months ago. I was setting it up for her and had it side by side next to my Rezound for about 4 or 5 days. I was just shocked at what a piece of crap it was. The screen was so small, it was like holding a kids toy or something. Honestly, it was painful to look at with its tiny, tiny screen.
3G just sucks. Granted, it was on Sprint's network (which I hear is not as good as Verizon) but 3G just sucked. Slow, spotty... Downloading apps seemed to take forever compared to my blazing fast 4G.
No widgets? WTF? I had to click on 3 or 4 things just to get to a Bluetooth control panel - my Rezound has a link right to the Bluetooth control panel on the homescreen. I love the big clock/weather widget on my homescreen, and having 4 different apps I can immediately go into during an unlock is terrific.
I have a few friends who have iPhones. One day, one of those guys who does sales (and is kind of an ass) started projecting that "I'm awesome because I own and iPhone and I love it and I love me and Im soo dam kewl" attitude - and I just tore him to shreds with the above three points.
He countered with "Well, I use iTunes and all my stuff is there and it magically appears in my iCloud, bla bla bla". I admitted he did have a point, but I ripped into him about how much iTunes sucks/I have my own cloud/etc. But I make sure to rip on him and his tiny screen and slow bandwidth opium of the masses toy whenever he brings it up.
I honestly feel sorry for people who are blinded by how cool they think they are because they bought an iPhone. Seriously, it reminds me of these people who are brainwashed into a religious cult and think they are going to be teleported to a paradise planet by an alien named Xennue or something.
I use Gmail/Google Calendar/Google Contacts/Google Docs... I have no desire to give that up for an iPhone.
However, I do like my iPad. Now that it can run Chrome, its actually nice. I can easily access all the above with little hassle.
Other than this ICS/Google Maps 6.10 debacle, I've had no issues with my Rezound whatsoever. With its extended battery, its just a great piece of hardware. I can't see myself changing that for any reason for a long, long time...
Now... Tablets... that's another story...

Wow so much animosity towards the iPhone. Its really not a bad device. Both iOS and Android are solid platforms, and both have their pros and cons.
EDIT: Scratch all that i mustve overlooked the fact you have an iPad, so you do like the platform. As for the cultish fanboyism of ios yeah its there, but its going to exist everywhere. We have fanboy android users with the same mentality.
Well if I get a new phone it will be the s3. So what do you think, rezound or s3? I really don't know what to do here. I've been with htc since the apache. The galaxy s3 looks pretty good though. What do you think?

nice looking phone with a better processor. Already leaks of JB on the international version. Promising. Personally, I'm riding the rezound for a while longer.

Well said Webmastuh . Hehehe.. iphones may be slick, but they are highly overrated. Lots of these new Android phones whoop ish*ts a$$. The Rezound is an excellent piece of hardware, when paired with the proper software and firmware. The S3 is an excellent handset. The interface and graphics acceleration are much faster than the Rez, but as you know, Samsung has always had poor radios. Idk if they have improved it on the new S3 though...

Ha! Yeah, sorry if the post came off full of iPhone/iOS vitriol. I agree - both iOS and Android are both solid OS's/Platforms and both have their pros and cons. For the record I work with both and I'll program for either. I dropped the "religious fervor" about this stuff a while ago - they are all just tools.
I actually have a couple of iPads, and like a lot of things about them. I use them a lot to do actual productive work (mostly note taking and emails on the go). I have a couple of Android tablets, and I'm interested in getting a Surface.
But I'm sticking with my attack on iPhones. G3 sucks compared to my Rezound's G4, the iPhone screen is much smaller than my Rezound, and iPhone doesn't have widgets (and that shouldn't be overlooked. They are convenient as heck.)
I found out the other day that if I ever want to upgrade my Rezound with a subsidized phone from Verizon, I MUST drop my unlimited data plan for one of those metered plans they have. I told the rep I would never do this, and that I'd fire Verizon and switch to Sprint or T-Mobile first.
But the question I had was why upgrade my phone? The answer was "for new functionality that comes out". My answer was "I'll just do new functionality on a tablet, and keep my phone as-is." I'm a pretty imaginative guy, but I can't see why I'd have a specific need to upgrade my phone anytime soon. If some new killer-must-have app comes out tomorrow that doesn't run on a Rezound - cool, I'll just get it on a tablet. I'll keep the Rezound for basic stuff and use other advanced/new stuff on a tablet. The Rezound will be relegated to a bandwidth pipe with some basic email checking functions. Oh, and actual phone calls...
Maybe if 5G comes out that the Rezound can't handle... (and it would have to be a 5 - 10 times better than 4G to make it worth it), then maybe I'd consider replacing my Rezound... Unless a tablet comes out that has it built in... Or maybe some specific must-have thing would work better with a small form factor, but then again it might also be available in 5-7inch tablet for $200...
Switching back to my old phone....
Maybe I'm crazy (don't answer that), but I'm seriously thinking about switching back to my Dinc2 from the Rezound. After using the Rezound for several months, I'm just not that crazy about it. Sure, its bigger and has 4G, but everything about it - flashing ROMs, S-On/S-Off, this radio, that radio - is so COMPLICATED. The Dinc2 is just so much easier.
And I know that development on the Dinc2 has slowed way down, but it has on the Rezound too. I guess I'm just not sure what I should do, but I don't want to switch, then switch back again because I miss 4G. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd advise against reactivating a 3g phone on your line, especially if you have unlimited or a double data deal. Verizon is looking for any excuse to take those away, and switching between a 4g and 3g phone apparently qualifies. (Seriously, I've been on the phone with Verizon all morning trying to fix my uncle's plan).
if you have questions on flashing, just ask, there are helpful rezound people around.

I was wondering about that. Thanks for the info. That may just be enough to make me want to stay on the Rez. :good:
I don't know why people think dev on the Rezound is slowing because it's actually at more of a standstill. But, the OTA updates have dropped and now we are waiting for source to drop. Once that happens I have a feeling dev will continue on again and hopefully continue on long after the Rezound's shelf life much like the orig Incredible.
Finally got fed up with this dog-turd of a phone, and ordered a Nokia Lumia 822 as a replacement.
I have been with Android since flashing Donut onto my HTC Vogue, and while it was fun at first, I'm at a point now I just want my phone to work, with no need to constantly flash ROMs to get things to work well. I'm also tired of the constant lags/freezes that seem to still plague Android phones, so I've decided to take the plunge and move to a WP8 phone.
Anyway, the reason I'm writing this post is to see if anyone here has any interest in my documenting my experiences making the switch. If you want me to post here, let me know. If not, well, let me know that too. :silly:

@OP: I don't think I could ever go from an Android phone to a Win8 phone. It's just not the same. Plus, I'm pretty sure I'd lose a lot of apps... Though, I am looking for a cheap ICS/JB replacement for my X2, anyone have a suggestion there? Looking at the Droid Bionic, but even that is fairly expensive...
You picked a bad time to switch. Android up until ICS has been pretty crappy. I came from webOS and when I was using that, I thought Android was clunky and a little ugly. This is when Gingerbread was the newest version. I made the switch because webOS was going nowhere and there was no way in hell I was switching to an iPhone. Since the Droid X2 was my first Android phone, I came into android with a not so perfect experience thanks to Motorola and their locked down ways. I used ICS and JB when they were released on the DX2 but we all know they werent perfect. I was lucky enough to be given a Galaxy Nexus and since then, my thoughts on Android have gotten a lot better. You dont know what you are missing until you use a phone thats able to fully run the latest version of Android. Lag is pretty much gone. Everything works as it should. And Android is just getting better with every update. You say you have been using Android since the old Android days. Thats why I say you picked a bad time to switch because those were the crappy android days.
As far as Windows Phone, I have nothing against it. It looks great. My girlfriend is actually making the switch from Android to WP8 this month too. Shes not as much of a customizer as I am when it comes to phones so I think she will be happy with it. Also, it will give me a chance to check it out for myself. Not that I will ever switch. I'm sticking with Android and looking forward to their next unveiling in the next couple months.

I appreciate what you are saying here, and I agree that then new phones are better in this regard than before. However the only phones that even remotely come close to the speed of the WP8 phones are the flagship phones, which are at least $200 on contract or $650 off. No thanks.
And hey, maybe I'll like the new phone, maybe not. The only way to know is to try, so I'm going to give it a try. I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone to switch, just thought my experience may provide value to others.

For sure. I'm sure everyone here appreciates you sharing your experience. I'll be curious to know what you think of WP8 when you finally get it.
OP, to be honest, i felt the same way after dealing with the x2. after all we had gone through, i was just fed up. i wanted a phone that would just... work. My opinion has changed completely since i switched. after the x2, i got a rezound. it too was plagued with similar issues, and dealing with the lack of support and bad battery i nearly bought an iphone.since i got a RAZR M, my opinion has nearly 180'd. with the snapdragon s4, all my issues with android had literally melted away. with jellybeans smooth butteryness, the improved battery life, and overall impressive features, i will never leave android. even on stock, i rarely ever have horrendous battery or any stuttering whatsoever. had i been in your shoes, i definately would have held out for the SGS4, with the snapdragon 600, battery and smoothness with only go up. now, everyone has their opinions, but it seems your opinion was a little to vague and blunt in judging android as a whole. <-- thats my opinion, if anyone is interested.
My 822 got here last night, I haven't had a chance to do too much to it yet, but I'll give you my first impressions:
1. Build - Polycarbonate body is fine except for the back cover, which feels like it is going to break when you pull it off. One thing you have to give Motorola is that their phones are built like tanks, with aluminum bodies.
2. Screen - Screen is an AMOLED screen. Decided I'm not a fan. Has very nice contrast, but the oranges/browns/red look butt-awful. The 840x480 screen is a actually a benefit for me, at least, because it causes the fonts to be rendered larger than they would be on the X2, and are easier on my eyes. Plus less pixels to push means better speed from the phone.
3. Speed - Whoo boy, does this thing FLY!
That's all I will report on for now, I need some time to customize/configure the device before I come to any conclusions regarding the usability of the OS and/or app issues.
For anyone interested in differences in a few apps comparing Android, iOS and WP:

Ok, so Ive had the new phone for a little over a week now, which I beilieve takes me past the "honeymoon" period, and here are my thoughts:
The metro interface is really starting to grow on me. When I first saw the live tiles I thought "Uggh!! that's just nasty". But they look much nicer on the phone than they do on a picture on the internet. Probably due to the high contrast AMOLED display.
I still dislike the nasty oranges/browns on the device, but I've mostly stopped noticing it now.
The device feels smaller than the X2, even though it has ostensibly the same size screen as the X2. In fact, I would probably prefer a slightly larger size to get a larger screen area.
The device is slick, and has fallen out of my hand a couple of times. Almost fell into the crapper once! Definitely getting a case for this.
The screen resolution differences are a non-issue IMHO.
The camera quality is about the same as the X2, maybe a little better. MUCH faster to start, though, no longer missing the moment waiting for the camera to start.
Speaking of the camera, holy hell is Cinemagraph a cool feature. It takes a picture along with 5 seconds of video, allowing you to create a moving snapshot effect, similar to the NFL player intros on TV or the moving pictures from the Harry Potter movies.
There has been some extra work getting things setup, as I still want to retain my google accounts, but once done it is seemless enough.
In terms of speed and usability this phone blows away any Android device I've ever used, (including my Nexus 7). There is simply no comparison in this department.
Nokia Maps and Drive are not quite as nice as the Google maps and Navigator, but still very good. Not really missing anything here.
As far as apps that I miss, there really isn't much. iHeartradio is probably the big one, and they have a WP7 app so a WP8 on is expected to be coming shortly. Nokia Music fills in for iHeartRadio for now. There are a few other apps missing, but IE10 does such a nice job with mobile websites that it's just not a big deal.
I am fast becoming a fan of Nokia. Their custom apps are fantastic, and they have shown a real commitment to improving WP8 along. Whereas with Motorola phones you get an outdated, buggy OS, bloatware, and few updates, Nokia apps are superb and they are continually adding cool new features to their phones. Motorola still probably has the edge in build quality, especially with the aluminum bodies. I want my phones to last a few years, so build quality does matter to me.
There are a few things that I would like to see added, like separate volume controls, the ability to pin individual settings to the start menu, and a webkit browser, but these are relatively minor issues.
The apps are definitely fewer than what is available on Android. But the quality of the apps is significantly better as well. They are almost universally more polished and beautiful than their Android counterparts.
Overall I am loving this phone. Especially since I got it in new condition for under $200 bucks.
As I was reading Engadget yesterday I saw a couple of articles, one on the Broid Bionic finally getting upgraded to Jelly Bean, and the other one on how the HTC One bootloader is going to be locked for AT&T, I realized just how much crap one has to deal with on an Android phone. I will NOT miss any of this.
For those who contributed to the development on the X2, my sincerest thanks. You helped make a crap phone more bearable.
I may peruse the X2 forums from time to time for nostalgia's sake, but otherwise I think I won't be coming here much more. Best of luck to all of you, and hopefully DZK can get you a nice bug-free Jelly Bean build some day.

Thank you for the review. I chose the dx2 for the lack of a call termination beep. As in other Moto's at the time. And these beeps are always passed to a Bluetooth headset. My iphone 4s does the same damn thing.
What about the Nokia?
I just tried this, when the caller hangs up you get a triple beep. I don't know about over bluetooth, though.
I actually like this feature.
I use the Plantronics Voyager Pro HD and it is very loud because the dynamic range not compressed and this tone is much louder than the voices.
I also notice that the tone is much louder ( iphone ) when it is a Vzw phone terminating on the other end- strange.

Are you still with this 822?
I tried it out. I really liked it at first but but WP8 is not ready for "prime time" Now this is truly "dog turd" OS . You cannot even cut & paste between apps!! Need I say more.
