ok basically i have the 4.03(release 5) and the system is asking for a system update. is it worth it? or should i root it? i want to root it since i want to start developing apps now that im learning java and bought a couple of books on applying it to android developing.
but the question is : Should i update?
What are the advantages to updating?
can i root on the update or on my current version?
does the tablet run better on root since i can over clock it?
What device are you using?

The update your talking about is android 4.2.2 right? Give more details please. Unless you want a basic judgement? Like installing the latest jelly bean, then afterwards you would want to root it. There are tons of step by steps for 4.2.2, with download links and everything. And I have read good reviews and most the methods used. Also rooting will give you access allowing .exe and Javas to run smoothly while being tested. I haven't tried the newest update to the tablets, and not much reviews have been posted, but the only problem I could find was LTE got knocked off. Otherwise it has extra tweaks to improve android. If your happy with the software you have, and happy with the speed, just stay on it and root it. Personally, I would try to update the tablet to 4.1.2, or any other jelly bean instead of the newest one, because the custom ROMs and rooting methods haven't been perfected for 4.2.2 but using 4.1.2, I would be confident in the software and speed because it has been tested multiple times, and ROMs or kernels have been almost perfected for them. So I would know I won't run into any bug.
That probably didn't help too much, but I hope it helped some!

apparently its the 4.0.3 (realese5a)
Well that's lame haha. Do you want to update your tablet to jelly bean? If you like the ICS, just root it. If you want to update it, its going to be more steps to follow, but if its worth it to you then do it. If it was me, I would update to jelly bean and root it. Also newer ROMs come with added features. Its really up to you. Whether you update to jelly bean, or stay on ics, the rooted OS would be near about the same for both. Unless you want to install a custom ROM. As you know, rooting your phone voids your warranty. But you can do many things to the phone to do what you want to do. Over clocking the processor, changing sizes of certain memory storage locations for better speed or battery life. I would update to jelly bean, and root that. And no matter which way you go on it, always end up rooting it. It will help so much in creating java and other applications

Android 4.0.3r5a currently can not be rooted. Do not update with the OTA update file. Instead, root the 4.0.3r5 using Condi's S.onyTablet.S [ALLinONE] tool and then use Condi's S.onyTablet.S [FLASHER] tool to install prerooted 4.0.3r5a. Links to Condi's tools are in my signature.
You can update from release 5a to jelly bean 4.1.2 right. Or is the 5a a lot different? He doesn't have to stay on ICS

Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) is not yet available for the Sony Tablet S.
Custom 4.1.2 ROMs are available though. Just not official ones. I searched many times on Google and most had great reviews. I mean I could be wrong? If the ROMs don't even work? But the custom roms seem to be available. Right? I want to make sure I'm not going crazy here haha

Unfortunately, there are no custom 4.1.2 ROMs available for or compatible with any of Sony's tablets (Sony Tablet S, Sony Tablet P, Xperia Tablet S).
Really? Well why is there a lot of websites I searched by Google, that came with download links and detailed tutorials? I'm sorry man I'm new to the forums, but I have been on this site my own phone needs. So considering I'm new, I truly don't understand what your trying to actually say? Or if your really saying there aren't any custom ROMs like that for Sony tablet. Cause I found a lot of pages, but maybe they are fake? Although I can't see anyone actually writing good reviews about the post if it was fake. Maybe I'm wrong, and the websites are fake, if so can I get a pointer on how to tell? Cause it would really me out, while I'm helping others

If your tablet hasn't started the process yet, unplug the phone and close Odin. Go into the tablets settings and find USB debugging. Make sure its clicked. And plug your phone Into the computer without Odin running. Your computer will automatically find the drivers for you and install them.

in other words...You will need a computer and for a safety feature in case you soft brick or hard... you will have a need for a pc...computer.
do you have CWM on your device? like ranger stated below...no need to root to flash...

Honestly I would not attempt to flash without a pc handy...due to the saying
"ya never know"
Even though we have the same make/model devices....they are not the same... my GNote may not like a ROM as to yours might...like I trying explaining ... the computer being your safety net if something goes wrong....I would wait or find a friend that you can use a computer, but it is your call, it is your investment.
btw unless someone knows a way to put CWM on the device without a computer....I believe you will need a computer...
Since CWM is a custom kernel, you could flash it from the phone using the Mobile Odin app.
Edit: oops never mind -- you need to be rooted to use Mobile Odin. Sorry for the bad information.
I rooted one phone using the terminal emulator after downloading such and busy box to the SD card. But its harder than climbing Everest without oxygen typing those commands.

I have searched google and xda for information how how to root this phone with out a PC (aka using an .apk like framaroot) and I can not find a viable solution. I have tried Z4Root and Framaroot and neither of them work. Do you know of any other ways to root my device with out a pc? If i dont need a Root to Flash Could you point me in the right direction to find that information I haven't put CWM on the device yet because I Cant Root so I cant MobileOdin ect.. you see the picture lol. Is it possible to use an Update.zip file? or use a formatted SDcard to flash it like I did to Flash NookColor1?

Good luck and enjoy
Just installed it, and everything wet smoothly. I have no idea what I am expecting now though, it appears to have just replaced the search bar. Nothing different seems to have happened so far.
Edit: I had to install the modified Velvet-theos0o.apk file in order to get it to work properly. Voice search isn't working but that seems to be a common issue.

if you search factual questions it should now bring up "knowledge cards" with your answer rather than a google search.
Also try holding home and dragging up, it may open "google now" which is supposed to act a bit like your PA and learn your routine
I'm also doing a bigger more widespread port of this over in the android development>apps and games section

Unlocking voids warranty, rooting doesn't.
It says that it requires a "A Rooted device running ICS AOSP Rom". I'm rooted but NOT unlocked and therefore NOT running a custom ROM.
This won't work for me. Right?

Im not 100% sure, but I would imagine that the stock ROM is close enough to AOSP for it to work.
I think it probably would work, but you may want to wait for someone else to confirm

You know what guys, I really miss honeycomb. Especially the way you add widgets and also the customization that Sony did with the app drawer- they shouldn't have gotten rid of it in my opinion.
I still have my old Tablet S (Although with a cracked screen sadly)
Is it possible (I have root) to downgrade to 3.2?
Why did Google get rid of the awesome screen which added widgets.
Or perhaps someone could send the launcher?
Ive done extensive research and tried many methods and asked people alot smarter than me it cant be done until the bootloader is u locked. Once it is than we can the reason is because the recovery has been updated in the current version of android and once it is you cant go back because it is part of the Rom and is hidden. Yes ive tried downgrading and before I got bootlooped it said cannot because of recovery version. I WASTED about 2 months on this idea as well as a few other people and also Condi the best dev we have over here for the tablet s has tried and theres still no way until the bootloader. Ive also looked at testpoint unlock but if you've ever looked at the motherboard theres gazillions of testpoints so who knows which is the right one plus taking it apart isnt exactly a walk in the park like it is with phones. Youll just have to wait like me. Btw head over and sign the bootloader unlock petition.

First, it may not update because you are rooted. It shouldn't brick it though, just lose root. Second, if you do update, and I'm assuming it's too me7, you currently do not have a way to flash custom roms. And you may give up that option for ever. I would discourage you from updating.

Why wouldn't it update? Would I have to unroot then update?. Next, that's all I really want. I'm not very familiar with the Jelly Bean Odin for fixing. And, I already do know that, and couldn't I find a way back to MDK with Odin? And for some reason, I'm terrified of rebooting because it might bootloop. (I know, crazy right?)

If you take the update there is no way back to mdk for technical reasons, look up q-fuses. Since you are rooted the update may not work. And boot loops are not that big a deal if you know how to get past them. I'd not update and do a lot more research. The update isn't going a way and you can always do it if you want. BUT, you can't go back once you do.

4.0 is probably better on everything, cause its older, better battery too. But not as many bells and whistles. A lot of the lag can be eliminated just by disabling ripple effect on lock screen. The remaining with Trickster. I know you don't like to read too much, but if you went to p355 - 378 in Padawan thread, all lag issues (for most) disappeared. My phone never ran better. I've gotten comfortable with bells and whistles though. Stock is very bland for me now.

Sounds like modem issue. Try flashing a separate modem on top of. Don't know what other 2 ROMs you flashed? Not sure what the effect would be, but Padawan doesn't need gapps.
