[Q] Noob Question: Will updating from Rooted Stock MDK Brick? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I know it sounds crazy, but, I still need to learn more first. I really don't need root as of right now. So, if I update, will it screw up my phone? ANd currently, I have the AIO Project Odex installed and uninstalled TalkBack and disabled Samsung TTS and Google TTS. And, please, I know its a stupid question, but please answer.

First, it may not update because you are rooted. It shouldn't brick it though, just lose root. Second, if you do update, and I'm assuming it's too me7, you currently do not have a way to flash custom roms. And you may give up that option for ever. I would discourage you from updating.

Why wouldn't it update? Would I have to unroot then update?. Next, that's all I really want. I'm not very familiar with the Jelly Bean Odin for fixing. And, I already do know that, and couldn't I find a way back to MDK with Odin? And for some reason, I'm terrified of rebooting because it might bootloop. (I know, crazy right?)

If you take the update there is no way back to mdk for technical reasons, look up q-fuses. Since you are rooted the update may not work. And boot loops are not that big a deal if you know how to get past them. I'd not update and do a lot more research. The update isn't going a way and you can always do it if you want. BUT, you can't go back once you do.

I still don't understand why it won't work. And how would I get past them? (I know to do it on GB Xperia Play not, Jelly Bean/ S4)

It sounds like your telling me your phone boot loops every time you reboot it? You've done a lot of messing with your phone by the sounds of it. That's the reason ota update probably won't work.

Why don't you just Odin back to stock mdk and fix it?

Actually, never happens. Just paranoid. And I didn't install anything except Project Odex (WiFi toggle etc) and removed the TTS apps. And that's it

I have a perfect condition white 16 GB model, running ME7. I'd be willing to pay you and pay shipping if you wanted to switch.

ah, sorry bro. im gonna have to pass :/

If you don't need root and don't want to flash custom rom's and want the update to me7, then you might as well trade your phone with one of these good folks stuck on me7 already. Give them some relief and gives you what you seem to want. Else wise freeze that ota.

I meant, I want to unroot temporarily, then reroot when I understand Odin better.

Custom recovery and OTA

On my previous phones that were rooted and had custom recovery installed I would never get prompt for an OTA.
I read a few warnings saying don't accept OTA with root on this phone.
Do you get prompt even with a custom recovery installed?
Yes, if you freeze I believe SMD it will stop it. Thats the app that stopped it on the GS3 and I think thatll stop it on here too. An easier fix is to flash something like Cleanrom or Beans, you get extra features and you get rid of a lot of the annoying crap. You do have to be unlocked to do it but that's fairly easy to do.

Thanks for confirming. I was on cleanrom on the gs3. Nice to see things work the same. I most likely root tomorrow... Just got the phone a few days ago.

Just took an update through Samsung Kies - I545VRUDMI1

Was already on ME7 so I was already screwed anyways...figured I would hope for the best. Not sure on whats been updated.....
I got it too.....I wish there was a change log
Can anyone figure out what its for?

Wonder if safe strap works with this update?
I wish I knew.... kies doesn't list any kind of change log.... Can't tell much yet.... But it's only been on my phone for about an hour or so...

Ya, users that enjoy stock then update away and see what's new and exciting. If someone is using safestrap on me7 for roms then I would wait on the update until it is tested.
Lol. I screwed something up by getting over my head with some deep settings and ended up losing 3g/4g. I was on mdk and rooted. My last resort was to unroot and factory reset. I then thought hey I'll update to me7 and go the safe strap route. I get back to my desk and see MI1 as updated and current version. Wonderful my luck has been today!!

If you are using ME7 and safe strap I would wait on trying the new update. It comes with a secure boot update. If you like to use roms I would wait for the devs to figure it out.
Anyone able to pull the modem yet?
Woaaa my bad. Didn't realize how young this thread was. Hasn't been enough time for that to happen yet.

Oh yeah. Is it flashable. If not I think I can. Use one of the other modem zips to make it that way.
Can we get a flashable modem though? Maybe with any luck they gave use the LTE band 4 AND AWS. My hopes Have come back maybe us T-Mobile guys can get our AWS!
Anyone willing to test if this new build is rootable from stock using the same method that worked before on ME7?

I'll pm it to you guys if you want, but I don't think anyone should post them publicly until we know how/if it has any effect on root
I will try this root method sometime today and get the results back. I was mainly like everyone else and curious about safestrap with update.
Please do. The modem itself shouldnt have any effect. But please do.
Well nothing on the inter webs that I can find. Most speculating all under the hood stuff and security of course. Still running stock rooted/debloated as DD so will probably steer clear myself.

[Q] MDK on ME7 Rom Need to go MJ7

Wife wants 4.3 on her S4 for the emoticons like mine on MJ7 but she doesn't want to lose any of her apps. She still has her custom TWRP recover unlike mine I am just rooted MJ7. Is there an easy way going about this? Is dirty flashing those MJ7 rom safe way for her to move up without losing her apps installed?
Emoticons on stock TW keyboard is what she wants. I know there are other apps out there that support it.
Please chime in if you know a way to do this. Thank you!

Not that I know of, best thing to do would be to Odin to stock and then just update her phone. That way, when a new update comes out with things she wants, she won't have to lose her apps/setup a second time.

Nice ... Research bud ... Back up all her apps and data (you say she still has twrp so she is still on the mdk bootloader version with the Loki work around I'm guessing) flash a TW 4.3 ROM and set back up her apps like it never happened

[Q] Broke the screen on my rooted S4. Can anyone point me the stock ROM?

I figure I can just use Odin to unroot, but I need help finding a good stock ROM. I heard the NoWipe version isn't the best to use because they might search for SuperUser apps and deny the warranty, and that's all I've found.
Thanks

I think you'd be fine to uninstall the super user app. I think you can use the no wipe tar. But they might update it. Or they might not. If you don't have the custom screen on boot send it in.

Oh, I'm sorry I should specify. My screen is broken, as in I can't see anything on it. Not just cracked glass. So it's not necessarily just a matter of uninstalling super user. Since I'm not sure I can do that with a broken screen.

Forgive my ignorance

I think I am about as new as they come when it comes to rooting or modifying a phone. Perhaps I shouldn't do anything. I will do what is safe, which is to read and then read some more.
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 with a mk2 build. I just wanted to check with the forum to see if I am on the right track.
First - I have enabled developer options and USB debugging. I download Fies and I think I have downloaded recent USB drivers. This is where I have stopped.
Second - I download safe root (not sure where) and root the phone.
Third - I would download safestrap for mk2. I think this would allow me to actually change factory settings.
It is my understanding that removing bloat ware or making simple changes can brick the phone so I am trying to see why you would undertake this entire endeavor.
Then there is Odin. I need to read up on this topic. I have no clue what purpose it serves.
Keeping in mind I have and will do nothing other than enable developer options, am I on the right track in terms of research?
Thanks in advance.

No your good to go with that battery. After you root with saferoot you're going to want to install SafeStrap, that is if you want to install any ROMs , there's a list of SafeStrap compatible ROMs I'll get you.

As far as "trying to see why you would undertake this entire endeavor", well, that's an interesting question.
Rooting entails risk. You may ruin your phone if something goes wrong. The more that you do that takes advantage of being rooted, the more likely that something could go wrong. You use Odin to re-flash known good software to recover when an Oops happens.
So, you need to decide why you want to root. I'd say that most people root since it allows them the ability to install custom ROMs. Some do it to have the ability to remove unnecessary software ("bloat") from their phones. Some do it because it lets them back everything up and recover in the case of a problem.
If you don't want to customize, and are satisfied with the factory-included set of software, then there's little reason to root. Only you can decide if the abilities that rooting gives you are worthwhile or not.
I run a rooted, OEM stock phone, mostly because I'm re-flashing it a lot to test rooting software. Putting a lot of effort into customizing a custom ROM when you're re-flashing OEM every few days is not fun, so I stay stock. I ran hyperdrive using Safestrap for a while, however.
The phone is rooted to allow Titanium Backup to backup and restore for the most part. I've also frozen a couple of huge apps that want to push updates (NFL Mobile, for example.) Other than that, I could probably live without being rooted, but it would be frustrating.
Thank you for your reply.
I want to root in order to get rid of all the bloat ware.
The more I read, however, the more intrigued I have become with custom roms. That venture is not in the near future.
My immediate concern is that I have read if you freeze or delete some bloat ware programs, an update can brick your phone.
My phone will update without my permission or knowledge so I am bit weary. If I am incorrect about the bloat ware/brick issue please let me know.
Regardless - Take care and thanks to all.

once you obtain root, you can load titatanium backup and freeze the update packages...many threads around here that explain what how you can do it

If you freeze applications, it won't brick after an OTA - the OTA will simply fail (at least on a Verizon phone). The update checks to verify that all of the files being updated are there and not tampered with before it starts updating.
I have noticed everyone is running MJ7. If memory serves me correct, the one exception with changing build is that you can run MJ7 over MK2 (my phone).
Should I run MJ7?
