Forgive my ignorance - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I think I am about as new as they come when it comes to rooting or modifying a phone. Perhaps I shouldn't do anything. I will do what is safe, which is to read and then read some more.
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4 with a mk2 build. I just wanted to check with the forum to see if I am on the right track.
First - I have enabled developer options and USB debugging. I download Fies and I think I have downloaded recent USB drivers. This is where I have stopped.
Second - I download safe root (not sure where) and root the phone.
Third - I would download safestrap for mk2. I think this would allow me to actually change factory settings.
It is my understanding that removing bloat ware or making simple changes can brick the phone so I am trying to see why you would undertake this entire endeavor.
Then there is Odin. I need to read up on this topic. I have no clue what purpose it serves.
Keeping in mind I have and will do nothing other than enable developer options, am I on the right track in terms of research?
Thanks in advance.

I forgot to add I am using a Hyperion extended battery. Do I need to use the stock battery when making any sort of changes or downloading necessary software?

No your good to go with that battery. After you root with saferoot you're going to want to install SafeStrap, that is if you want to install any ROMs , there's a list of SafeStrap compatible ROMs I'll get you.

As far as "trying to see why you would undertake this entire endeavor", well, that's an interesting question.
Rooting entails risk. You may ruin your phone if something goes wrong. The more that you do that takes advantage of being rooted, the more likely that something could go wrong. You use Odin to re-flash known good software to recover when an Oops happens.
So, you need to decide why you want to root. I'd say that most people root since it allows them the ability to install custom ROMs. Some do it to have the ability to remove unnecessary software ("bloat") from their phones. Some do it because it lets them back everything up and recover in the case of a problem.
If you don't want to customize, and are satisfied with the factory-included set of software, then there's little reason to root. Only you can decide if the abilities that rooting gives you are worthwhile or not.
I run a rooted, OEM stock phone, mostly because I'm re-flashing it a lot to test rooting software. Putting a lot of effort into customizing a custom ROM when you're re-flashing OEM every few days is not fun, so I stay stock. I ran hyperdrive using Safestrap for a while, however.
The phone is rooted to allow Titanium Backup to backup and restore for the most part. I've also frozen a couple of huge apps that want to push updates (NFL Mobile, for example.) Other than that, I could probably live without being rooted, but it would be frustrating.

Thank you for your reply.
I want to root in order to get rid of all the bloat ware.
The more I read, however, the more intrigued I have become with custom roms. That venture is not in the near future.
My immediate concern is that I have read if you freeze or delete some bloat ware programs, an update can brick your phone.
My phone will update without my permission or knowledge so I am bit weary. If I am incorrect about the bloat ware/brick issue please let me know.
Regardless - Take care and thanks to all.

If you freeze applications, it won't brick after an OTA - the OTA will simply fail (at least on a Verizon phone). The update checks to verify that all of the files being updated are there and not tampered with before it starts updating.

I have noticed everyone is running MJ7. If memory serves me correct, the one exception with changing build is that you can run MJ7 over MK2 (my phone).
Should I run MJ7?

Down sides of rooting?

I want to root my device but I'm wondering what some down sides may be. Also what would be the best way to root? Mashi or what? And I'm looking to increase performance and add additional features like nfc and scrolling wallpaper to name a couple. Thanks for any help!

no down side to rooting, benefits are more access to different areas of the system, and able to modify parts not accessible before rooting. Now the best way will depend on what you want, if you care about the flash counter then go to my thread in the dev section, if you don't care about the flash counter or warranty then I definitely recommend Da_G's overclocking kernel that also roots the device.
Wifi tethering, removing bloatware, blocking adds from free apps, are a couple and flashing custom roms/kernels which enhance performance. You also run the risk of bricking your device... Rooting also voids your warranty. So think carefully before jumping into it.

The only downside is losing warranty, really.

Samsung added a flash counter that when you flash any custom rom /kernel/recovery will keep track of how may times you have flashed firmware supposedly to decide who deny warranty to. You can revert back to stock but not the counter.

Double post sorry
As Android is based on a linux kernel, rooting your device is allowing yourself access to the very lowest level of system files. Doing so allows you to make alterations that are to your benefit, but of course this is also a vulnerability. These same system files control the well being of your device, and thus malicious applications are capable of corrupting it's files.
Nothing once we get ICS the counter can be reset to 0.

I rooted using da g method and the only downsides i have seen so far are fc's on the xda app, random reboots, and the flash counter issue. However, since the cwm zip came out, all of the above issues except for the flash counter have been corrected.

It's root only. The benefits of rooting are far more advantageous though. I just deal with the issue above! I can use something like DVDFab and make my own movie files that play fine.

[Q] Noob Question: Will updating from Rooted Stock MDK Brick?

I know it sounds crazy, but, I still need to learn more first. I really don't need root as of right now. So, if I update, will it screw up my phone? ANd currently, I have the AIO Project Odex installed and uninstalled TalkBack and disabled Samsung TTS and Google TTS. And, please, I know its a stupid question, but please answer.
First, it may not update because you are rooted. It shouldn't brick it though, just lose root. Second, if you do update, and I'm assuming it's too me7, you currently do not have a way to flash custom roms. And you may give up that option for ever. I would discourage you from updating.

Why wouldn't it update? Would I have to unroot then update?. Next, that's all I really want. I'm not very familiar with the Jelly Bean Odin for fixing. And, I already do know that, and couldn't I find a way back to MDK with Odin? And for some reason, I'm terrified of rebooting because it might bootloop. (I know, crazy right?)

If you take the update there is no way back to mdk for technical reasons, look up q-fuses. Since you are rooted the update may not work. And boot loops are not that big a deal if you know how to get past them. I'd not update and do a lot more research. The update isn't going a way and you can always do it if you want. BUT, you can't go back once you do.
I still don't understand why it won't work. And how would I get past them? (I know to do it on GB Xperia Play not, Jelly Bean/ S4)

Questions on first root, safestrap and hyperdrive

So I just moved from my iphone to a Samsung Galaxy S4 and I want to run Hyperdrive ROM but beforr I dive into my first root snd all I have some questions. If any of you can answer any or all of these that would be greatly appreciated. Ive spent a ton of time in here and other places reading up on all of this but want to clarify some stuff.
So I'm on ME7 so I'll root and then install safestrap. Then ill install Hyperdrive via safestrap. My questions are as follows:
1. Will this have any impact on my stock ROM or settings? Specifically will it impact my exchange email? Main reason I ask is my work has mandated that I have a pin for the lockscreen. So will that be impacted on my stock ROM or Hyperdrive?
2. Will I have any issues reverting back to factory settings if I need to? Would I just delete safestrap and take the OTA? When I do this will my stock ROM remain as is?
3. Lastly will any of this have any impact on any downloaded apps? I haven't gotten many yet, mainly just curious?
Again thank you for any help you have and also for any other adviser or insight I might not have thought about.

By "pin for your lockscreen" do you mean your device will be encrypted? If so, I don't think you'll be able to use Safestrap.
Yeah I read that somewhere, but when I go to Security, "Encrypt device" is an option so it appears as though it's not encrypted, our IT policy just requires as password/PIN to unlock the device. Correct me if I am misunderstanding this though.
I read in an early version of the ss thread that ss won't work with encryption enabled. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using xda app-developers app
Is "Encryption" the same thing as having a PIN required to unlock the device? Like I said, the main reason I thought that was a different thing with Safestrap is because under "Security" there are options to encrypt device and encrypt SD card, neither of which seem to be done on my phone. But I'm extremely new to all of this and only been reading around here for a week or so.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but no... Having a basic pin as you're lockscreen isn't the same thing as encrypting the device.

I'm confused about if i can or should take the OTA?

This is the deal. I rooted my note 3 and was not able to receive OTA's like everyone else because my device had a "custom" status. Well I used Wanam xposed and changed my status from custom to Official and now I see there is a 530mb download and it starts downloading it but I cancel it because I don't know if it's safe to take the OTA. I have my phone set up with all the features I wanted like hotspot, missing data, and airplane toggle and don't wanna mess that up or brick my phone.
What do you guys think about my situation? I'm on a stock rooted MJ4 rom tweaked as I said above.

Many good answers here, all appropriate.
Your update is not taking because even though Wanam can fake your status to official, your phone's rooted status (assuming you didn't use a Knox safe rooting method) is preventing the update from sticking. Samsung syscope is looking for signed binaries that are official, and thus you're hosed as far as the OTA update is concerned.
But you have many options, the easiest of which start with grabbing one of the tar (freeza) or one-click packages (Rwilco12) from the dev forum, installing from your computer, then adding recovery, rooting, open bootloader if you wish, and then staying put or forging ahead.
There are already a few good roms that are live, and some mods you can flash, if you are so inclined.
Good luck!

[Test][SS-compatible] BajaROM-S4

Hey I ported this over to the S4, I know the original dev and we decided we'd try to port this over. I have it working on my MJ7 S4 with Safestrap (I installed it fine on both stock slot and rom slot). Its aroma'd and I need to confirm it flashes for other safestrap S4 users before I port all the mods.
It should work fine without issues, its worth noting that initially there maybe some android.phone fc's but after a minute or two it will return to normal and also that this rom will work on both MK2 and MJ7 but if you're on MJ7 and don't flash the MJ7 modules afterwards you wont be able to use wifi or tethering. Any feedback would helpful, and you can do that via PM or posting here if you'd like.
Rom building isnt my forte but i do know what im doing. At this point this is basically a stock rom with the exception of having a 4in1 reboot menu and tethering built in its also themed. The apps and addons in the aroma options should work though. I havent added the toggles yet or added support for loki'd phones yet but will eventually.
Thanks

Thanks

I'll be testing this out as time permits surge
When I get home from work @Surge1223 I'll try this out. Right now I'm stuck qualifying at a gun range . I may film this install and post on YouTube if you don't mind.

I wouldn't mind at all, but you might lol you see there's a disclaimer in the aroma installer, and as I was quite annoyed at some questions in the q&a on the day I made this I edited the disclaimer. At the beginning in all caps I wrote something to the extent of:
GOOGLE HOW TO INSTALL A BLANKING ROM AND DONT BE A BLANKING --TARD ABOUT IT EITHER AND IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS BLANKING GOOGLE THEM FIRST JESUS BLANKING CHRIST!
Then the agree box says something like:
( x ) I agree to google my problems first and not be an idiot about installing roms
Of course ill edit all of this out when I make a public stable build but I forgot to before pushing this test build out lol, so its up to you about the video
Edit: Just so everyones clear, "blanking" is a euphemism for my use of the F-word with an "ing" suffix
Surge... I like your sense of humor, there needs to be more of that on here if you ask me. I think you should leave the disclaimer.

I'll look into it. Too funny BTW. It's very true though.

Ok, I was able to break away and install this. I went through the installer and rebooted. I could only get to the language option screen. After that, it says that my system UI unexpectedly stopped and I had to pull the battery. It was only the first try. I'll check again in a little bit and see if I get through. I have Verizon MK2.

Mine did that for a minute or two once too. Id say install this to a rom slot and do a full wipe if you can. P.S. (getting anything to even boot to that screen on MK2 is progress in my book )
Also anyone on MJ7 im really curious if it works for you guys without a hitch. A few months ago I had reason to believe that mk2 changed something In the ramdisk, but I couldn't gather enough info at that time.

Think your right there for sure.... Seems like things will work out and go good for one person latterly while others duplicate those same steps and it's a big fail! [emoji15]
No idea why or how.
Ashtrays nice to se ya doing some Rom-ing Surge.. You're a huge help to everyone on here.
