Custom recovery and OTA - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

On my previous phones that were rooted and had custom recovery installed I would never get prompt for an OTA.
I read a few warnings saying don't accept OTA with root on this phone.
Do you get prompt even with a custom recovery installed?

Yes, if you freeze I believe SMD it will stop it. Thats the app that stopped it on the GS3 and I think thatll stop it on here too. An easier fix is to flash something like Cleanrom or Beans, you get extra features and you get rid of a lot of the annoying crap. You do have to be unlocked to do it but that's fairly easy to do.

Thanks for confirming. I was on cleanrom on the gs3. Nice to see things work the same. I most likely root tomorrow... Just got the phone a few days ago.

I haven't really noticed anything, however the app update was supposed to fix the constant syncing issue with the "Watch" application. Could help you on battery a bit. I don't think its anything real big.
But, the dev's have recommended not taking the OTA.
I haven't taken it yet everything is smooth for me so far. Heard bad things about taking the OTA that has come out waiting on a newer one.
OTA = Not good and i have had no problems thus far. Hold off because root is so worth it!

i took it so i could watch 3d videos and green hornet..i have not notice any problems.
The OTA had its own bit of issues look it up on the google. It did something funky to the icons and few other issues.
Taking it wont screw up the chance to get root tho just have to wait on HTC to unlocck the phone.
update download
Is there a way to get this update off my 3vo I'm afraid its gonna eventually dl on its own and take the update
There is going to be another OTA update before root is found. Seriously who really wants to run an old busted OEM RUU that's rooted?
Me personally, I want the latest and greatest OTA, Rooted, and customized. I'll wait for that. In the meantime. Give me all the OTA you have. Updates are good! Omnomnomom!

Umm... What?
I did the OTA and I still can't watch the green hornet. It says that there are no videos found. Help?

I don't think it is an issue do to the fact that we are still getting the root, therefore in my opinion they were aware of it and the fix was needed to allow 3D Watch to work which means there's still was a bug or two possibly we will get the the root still over this, shouldn't have any effect against the rooted OTA coming
You guys sure are putting a lot of faith in HTC.....No updates for me until I see one that includes the S-Off bootloader. If your phone's truly not performing to your expectations have at it, but if you really want root at the earliest possible time and your phone's working ok without the OTA's......DON'T TAKE THEM. Remember, you can update at anytime, but you can't always revert back to what you had.

I had the update installed on both mine and my wife's 3VO and, aside from the phone icon on the lock screen, which was remedied with a hard reset, I haven't had one single problem.

Well my 3vo is on the nightstand I ain't doin anything til I know root is here. Even thought htcs emails say its comin I'm just gonna bide my time
Not takin the OTA till we get root. Don't wanna be left behind. Patients ppl.

The ota worked fine for me
The OTAs are fine. "When" HTC puts out the update for the s-off it will be done via the OTA so you'll have to do it then anyways. The whole "I don't want to update because I won't be able to root it" bull**** is just ignorance. In order to get the root you'll have to update, so might as well do it now and get the bug fixes done.
BTW, running all OTAs and my phone runs like a champs with 0 issues.

You're probably right but at the same time, you could be wrong. If someone wants s-off ASAP then it's safest to not do the OTA just to make sure they're running the same version the Devs are trying to crack. Straying from their targeted version is a risk because we don't know what bug they're exploiting. If you're willing to wait for HTC's s-off then sure, OTA away.

[Q] EVO 3D lagging, not as fast and smooth as before.

So I rooted my EVO 3D with unrEVOked, and I noticed some problems, so I went back to 100% complete stock. So after a couple of days, I started getting SMS errors and radio interfearances. Well I got it fixed a while ago, but it also lagged once in a while when I'm typing a message, sometimes scrolling through screens, when I make my phone go to sleep, it like sleeps then wakes up right away, but now it's been like around two weeks, and I've been having a little more lag when I'm typing a message, or making the phone go to sleep, so I have to keep restarting the phone to make it run smooth and fast. I updated the phone already, and idk if its the update or the root that messed up the phone, but if anyone knows HOW this happened, and how I can get rid of this lag, then PLEASE help me out, cause this lag is pissing me off. Thanks.
Root your phone again and get rid of that sprint crap...problem solved..hehe

But I updated my phone to the latest version. Can I still root it?
U can through HTC but u can't flash very much..just 2.3.4 stuff...do u have s-on or s-off?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Oh, well then how do I root it again? Cause I mean the lag pisses me off.
Go to htcdev.com and unlock your phone then find the Su zip in the dev section, then flash a recovery either twrp or cwm then u should be good...I'm assuming you have s-on correct?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Oh alrite then, nd yes I do.
Wait, and another thing, can I still root if I have 2.3.4??
Then yeah follow the directions from HTC then do the rest and flash 2.3.4 roms u won't be able to flash kernels yet but u will soon..should find some good roms from the devs
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
As long as u flash the Su zip then you will b rooted and flash a recovery I prefer twrp...go to the development section and there will b a walkthrough
For ya...
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
After you flash a recovery like twrp make sure you wipe everything including cache and the complete wipe of the phone before flashing any ROM, I think that's why your experiencing lag because you flashed over the stock ROM when you should of wiped everything before flashing.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Wait do I get the Su zip and walkthrough? Do I get it here or at HTC?

Well, most people that first come here don't know what they are doing. I think what you meant to say is, if you don't even know where or how to find a guide on rooting and flashing then before attempting anything, there is one thing you should do first. READ!!!! Read the stickies in the dev forum. Read the links in the stickies in the dev forum. Use Google to find as much info on the internet as you can before attempting anything!!! Please, for your own good read as much as you can. We cannot hold your hand through it. You need to be able to do this on your own. Read until you become familiar with the terminology. Then if you still don't understand come back here and ask. If you do that we will understand your questions better and you will understand the answers better. We all started out knowing nothing about this. I read on these forums for 2 years before posting anything. I am by no means a professional, but I do understand how to search for and find the answers to my questions.

Now that I'm rooted...

I know I'm a pain, but I have a few more questions. I'm unable to find the answers that are specific to this device.
I've decided that (at least for now) I'll be keeping the stock ROM that is currently on this phone. I have yet to look at all of the other great ROMs and decide which ones I'd like, and I will eventually do that, but not today.
One of these days, Verizon will be pushing an OTA update. I don't want to lose my root, but if I'm keeping JB, I want the update. Will Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper work on this phone?
Will I get the OTA with a fully debloated device?
What apps do you recommend for a rooted device other than Titanium backup?
As always, any and all help is much appreciated.
If you're debloating the stock rom (using TiBu to remove apps), your phone most likely wont update properly. OTA Root Keeper should work. This phone hasn't had a update so no one can confirm any of this.
Your best bet is to flash a stock based rom (Clean Rom or something similar) and whenever we get an update, the rom developers will update the rom.

I backed up using twrp to my sd card. I apparently didn't have enough space on the phone, so I did sd. Is that enough or do I need to backup onto my phone as well?

When an OTA finally rolls out, you will receive a notification. It's not going to force you to update. Then to get rid of the notification, you just need to change a few lines in the build.prop to the newest build number.

My wife's Note 2 was stock w/ root and recovery. Sometimes in the mornings her phone would be in TWRP from where it had downloaded the OTA and attempted to install it. I imagine the S4 will be the same way.

Just read in the root thread that the OTA updates your bootloader and prevents you from flashing the old kernel to root again. BEWARE - Do not update if you plan to keep root.

If I were to get this update without unrooting first, would I get in trouble/lose warranty with this update?

You'll only ever get in trouble/lose warranty if you return a rooted/modded phone. Research Odin and download a stock Odin image. If you ever need to return your phone, just flash that first and you're good to go.
Also look into an app called Triangle Away. I haven't checked this phone ik download mode yet to see if I've tripped the flash counter but Triangle Away is an invaluable app for resetting it (requires root on a stock rom).

Make the Jump!
To be completely straightforward -- you probably really don't want the new update. From what I've been hearing around the boards, it doesn't really provide any new important (at least not in my eyes) functionality to the device. If anything, it's mostly just a patch for holes that they unintentionally left. Those holes are what allow you to root the device so easily.
You're doing the same thing I did, by the way -- I hung on to the stock ROM for quite some time, and was a little worried to separate. However, I highly recommend just making the jump and going with HyperDrive. It's on release 5.7 at this point, and I've been using it as a daily driver for a few days now. I'ts really solid, you get all of your stock capabilities and functions plus MORE customization. Pretty cool, and much better than whatever Verizon will eventually push out in my opinion.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
I did decide to unroot for now, and go with the update. Sooner or later, after a good root method comes out, I will likely root again. Mostly, I just wanted to see what this update was all about. It's both good and underwhelming. It's good because the phone doesn't lag like it used to, but otherwise underwhelming.
Thank you, everyone, for your help. I'll definitely stick around on the forums. I really like the community here.
A rom would have fixed that lag.

[Q] Noob Question: Will updating from Rooted Stock MDK Brick?

I know it sounds crazy, but, I still need to learn more first. I really don't need root as of right now. So, if I update, will it screw up my phone? ANd currently, I have the AIO Project Odex installed and uninstalled TalkBack and disabled Samsung TTS and Google TTS. And, please, I know its a stupid question, but please answer.
First, it may not update because you are rooted. It shouldn't brick it though, just lose root. Second, if you do update, and I'm assuming it's too me7, you currently do not have a way to flash custom roms. And you may give up that option for ever. I would discourage you from updating.

Why wouldn't it update? Would I have to unroot then update?. Next, that's all I really want. I'm not very familiar with the Jelly Bean Odin for fixing. And, I already do know that, and couldn't I find a way back to MDK with Odin? And for some reason, I'm terrified of rebooting because it might bootloop. (I know, crazy right?)

If you take the update there is no way back to mdk for technical reasons, look up q-fuses. Since you are rooted the update may not work. And boot loops are not that big a deal if you know how to get past them. I'd not update and do a lot more research. The update isn't going a way and you can always do it if you want. BUT, you can't go back once you do.
I still don't understand why it won't work. And how would I get past them? (I know to do it on GB Xperia Play not, Jelly Bean/ S4)

It sounds like your telling me your phone boot loops every time you reboot it? You've done a lot of messing with your phone by the sounds of it. That's the reason ota update probably won't work.

Why don't you just Odin back to stock mdk and fix it?
Actually, never happens. Just paranoid. And I didn't install anything except Project Odex (WiFi toggle etc) and removed the TTS apps. And that's it

If you don't need root and don't want to flash custom rom's and want the update to me7, then you might as well trade your phone with one of these good folks stuck on me7 already. Give them some relief and gives you what you seem to want. Else wise freeze that ota.

Updating stock firmware on rooted phone?

Hi everyone, it's been a long time since I've been on messing with my phone. Pretty much forgot almost everything. I'm currently running on mj4 jellybomb rom still lol. Also running freeza's kernel. I know I'm totally outdated but just haven't had the time to update. I'm just now getting the kit Kat update on my phone and the message keeps popping up. How do I get rid of it or stop it? Or can I just update it and it'll keep all my files and apps, etc? And I'll just end up losing root? I'm not sure if it'll work that way, that's why I'm asking. Hope someone can help me out here.
