Updating stock firmware on rooted phone? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hi everyone, it's been a long time since I've been on messing with my phone. Pretty much forgot almost everything. I'm currently running on mj4 jellybomb rom still lol. Also running freeza's kernel. I know I'm totally outdated but just haven't had the time to update. I'm just now getting the kit Kat update on my phone and the message keeps popping up. How do I get rid of it or stop it? Or can I just update it and it'll keep all my files and apps, etc? And I'll just end up losing root? I'm not sure if it'll work that way, that's why I'm asking. Hope someone can help me out here.

Custom recovery and OTA

On my previous phones that were rooted and had custom recovery installed I would never get prompt for an OTA.
I read a few warnings saying don't accept OTA with root on this phone.
Do you get prompt even with a custom recovery installed?
Yes, if you freeze I believe SMD it will stop it. Thats the app that stopped it on the GS3 and I think thatll stop it on here too. An easier fix is to flash something like Cleanrom or Beans, you get extra features and you get rid of a lot of the annoying crap. You do have to be unlocked to do it but that's fairly easy to do.

Thanks for confirming. I was on cleanrom on the gs3. Nice to see things work the same. I most likely root tomorrow... Just got the phone a few days ago.

Now that I'm rooted...

I know I'm a pain, but I have a few more questions. I'm unable to find the answers that are specific to this device.
I've decided that (at least for now) I'll be keeping the stock ROM that is currently on this phone. I have yet to look at all of the other great ROMs and decide which ones I'd like, and I will eventually do that, but not today.
One of these days, Verizon will be pushing an OTA update. I don't want to lose my root, but if I'm keeping JB, I want the update. Will Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper work on this phone?
Will I get the OTA with a fully debloated device?
What apps do you recommend for a rooted device other than Titanium backup?
As always, any and all help is much appreciated.
If you're debloating the stock rom (using TiBu to remove apps), your phone most likely wont update properly. OTA Root Keeper should work. This phone hasn't had a update so no one can confirm any of this.
Your best bet is to flash a stock based rom (Clean Rom or something similar) and whenever we get an update, the rom developers will update the rom.

I backed up using twrp to my sd card. I apparently didn't have enough space on the phone, so I did sd. Is that enough or do I need to backup onto my phone as well?

When an OTA finally rolls out, you will receive a notification. It's not going to force you to update. Then to get rid of the notification, you just need to change a few lines in the build.prop to the newest build number.

My wife's Note 2 was stock w/ root and recovery. Sometimes in the mornings her phone would be in TWRP from where it had downloaded the OTA and attempted to install it. I imagine the S4 will be the same way.

Just read in the root thread that the OTA updates your bootloader and prevents you from flashing the old kernel to root again. BEWARE - Do not update if you plan to keep root.

If I were to get this update without unrooting first, would I get in trouble/lose warranty with this update?

You'll only ever get in trouble/lose warranty if you return a rooted/modded phone. Research Odin and download a stock Odin image. If you ever need to return your phone, just flash that first and you're good to go.
Also look into an app called Triangle Away. I haven't checked this phone ik download mode yet to see if I've tripped the flash counter but Triangle Away is an invaluable app for resetting it (requires root on a stock rom).

Make the Jump!
To be completely straightforward -- you probably really don't want the new update. From what I've been hearing around the boards, it doesn't really provide any new important (at least not in my eyes) functionality to the device. If anything, it's mostly just a patch for holes that they unintentionally left. Those holes are what allow you to root the device so easily.
You're doing the same thing I did, by the way -- I hung on to the stock ROM for quite some time, and was a little worried to separate. However, I highly recommend just making the jump and going with HyperDrive. It's on release 5.7 at this point, and I've been using it as a daily driver for a few days now. I'ts really solid, you get all of your stock capabilities and functions plus MORE customization. Pretty cool, and much better than whatever Verizon will eventually push out in my opinion.
Good luck with whatever you choose!
I did decide to unroot for now, and go with the update. Sooner or later, after a good root method comes out, I will likely root again. Mostly, I just wanted to see what this update was all about. It's both good and underwhelming. It's good because the phone doesn't lag like it used to, but otherwise underwhelming.
Thank you, everyone, for your help. I'll definitely stick around on the forums. I really like the community here.
A rom would have fixed that lag.

Why are you updating?

Anybody here feel confused with some of the users that are updating to the latest locked down firmware, I just find it weird that people are knowingly locking down their phones, the main reason people come here is to do the opposite. I've read people apply the update and they still ask for some sort of support from community members. I just dont get it.

I read some saying they didn't care and after some did the update they said the phone was faster and worth losing root. Others just want root and were able to update using voodoo ota rootkeeper. To keep root and update.

They kept root in a sense. Yes, they can still run some apps that require root, but they cannot flash a custom kernel or recovery.

I traded my note 2 and got this. Met the guy at Verizon. Got the prompt for the OTA and took it before I knew what was good for me. Although I would have preferred not to, I am very impressed with the stock firmware.
Only disappointment which would make me want to root is WiFi tethering doesn't work in Pdanet, and of course the annoying WiFi toggle - both things I'm content dealing with without pulling hair out while I wait for the new exploit.

I've noticed a few of the update fans haven't posted in here for awhile. Possible a good thing for the community.

[Q] Noob Question: Will updating from Rooted Stock MDK Brick?

I know it sounds crazy, but, I still need to learn more first. I really don't need root as of right now. So, if I update, will it screw up my phone? ANd currently, I have the AIO Project Odex installed and uninstalled TalkBack and disabled Samsung TTS and Google TTS. And, please, I know its a stupid question, but please answer.
First, it may not update because you are rooted. It shouldn't brick it though, just lose root. Second, if you do update, and I'm assuming it's too me7, you currently do not have a way to flash custom roms. And you may give up that option for ever. I would discourage you from updating.

Why wouldn't it update? Would I have to unroot then update?. Next, that's all I really want. I'm not very familiar with the Jelly Bean Odin for fixing. And, I already do know that, and couldn't I find a way back to MDK with Odin? And for some reason, I'm terrified of rebooting because it might bootloop. (I know, crazy right?)

If you take the update there is no way back to mdk for technical reasons, look up q-fuses. Since you are rooted the update may not work. And boot loops are not that big a deal if you know how to get past them. I'd not update and do a lot more research. The update isn't going a way and you can always do it if you want. BUT, you can't go back once you do.
I still don't understand why it won't work. And how would I get past them? (I know to do it on GB Xperia Play not, Jelly Bean/ S4)

It sounds like your telling me your phone boot loops every time you reboot it? You've done a lot of messing with your phone by the sounds of it. That's the reason ota update probably won't work.

Why don't you just Odin back to stock mdk and fix it?
Actually, never happens. Just paranoid. And I didn't install anything except Project Odex (WiFi toggle etc) and removed the TTS apps. And that's it

I have a perfect condition white 16 GB model, running ME7. I'd be willing to pay you and pay shipping if you wanted to switch.

ah, sorry bro. im gonna have to pass :/
If you don't need root and don't want to flash custom rom's and want the update to me7, then you might as well trade your phone with one of these good folks stuck on me7 already. Give them some relief and gives you what you seem to want. Else wise freeze that ota.

I meant, I want to unroot temporarily, then reroot when I understand Odin better.

Custom Rom on 4.4.2

Hello all,
New to the note 2 scene but have been a long time s3 owner and I'm very familiar with flashing rooting and custom roms and recoveries. I've been reading a bit and it seems like I'm stuck on nd7. Is there no safestrap method for those who received the device with nd7 already? I like some of the features like ultra battery saver and air command but am stuck with just stock TW?
Sent from my SCH-I605 using XDA Free mobile app
anyone guide me in the right direction?
Currently nd7 can only be rooted. I believe I have heard someone is trying to work on safestrap for nd7.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=55512585
Here's the post/thread where Beastmode talks about seeing if he can get a safestrap working for 4.4.2.
About a week ago, Beastmode said he was about 30% there with it... so it sounds like progress is happening.
thanks guys i really like the phone but i'm so used to being able to flash roms that i feel lost:silly: any way thanks guys i really hope beastmode gets it going, i'm gonna head over there and give him a little paper motivation
I know the pain. One of my criteria for buying this GN2 was that it have the old firmware, so I found a guy that had BNIB old stock Notes for $300. Still sporting MC3! Any chance you could go shopping for one that is still on old firmware and trade the other off on Swappa?

Yes I have been debating but im gonna wait some to see if beastmode gets safestrap running on the note. If not I may have to try to find an older firmware gn2 or go to gn3.
